The Brewed

7.52pm

We ran around the school to find a place to hide, which we landed on the boys toilets. Ew.

"It's fine, we're safe in here. Trust me, teachers will never enter a student washroom. It's like an unwritten rule in education"

"Sure, right after 'don't eat students' brains'!" A loud bang at the door echoed around the room, we all rushed to stand in front of it, keeping it shut.

"You know who's fault this really is?" Benny said, "Sarah's. Why don't you fight your own battles?" he mocked

The bangs at the door got louder, "Open the door!" I yelled

"Are you insane!?" They exclaimed, I moved them out of the way and opened the door to let Sarah in

"Did I miss anything?" she asked

"We were just talking about you! Um, hooray, we're saved!"

"We were worried about you" Ethan sympathised, "I had a vision about what's turning people into zombies, it's coffee"

"I know, Lotta Latte. I had a 'chat' with the folks down there earlier"

"I tried to call you but you never picked up" I commented

"Right, sorry about that I kinda lent my phone to Mr. Collingwood"

"Wait," Benny interrupted, opening the door looking out into the halls to all the knocked out teachers, "alright, can we go now? I mean after I wash my hands, course" he pointed at the hygiene poster

"There's nowhere to go! The streets are crawling with zombies and the longer we wait the worse this thing gets!" Sarah urged

"Don't you have some geek-know-how on zombie fighting?" I asked

"Well in every zombie movie, it's always the same. Smash them in the head"

"Except in Super Dead Four" Benny added, "they cured the zombies with anti-zombulax"

"You're right! If we get a sample of the coffee maybe we can analyse it and find a cure or a weakness"

"Sounds like we have to get to the lab, let's go!" she insisted

"Wait, I think we're gonna need my ectoplasm refractor from home"

"Your who-when-what?" As much as I loved these geeks, I had no clue what they were on about or how they understood any of this.

"I love that ectoplasm refractor!" Benny beamed

"Here's a deal, you get a sample and I'll race to your house to get your ecto-thing and we meet in the lab in ten minutes deal?"

"The refractor is in my room, on my microscope, okay?"

Sarah walked out of the room, Ethan following her steps, "She's leading them away. Look, there should still be some coffee in the teacher's lounge but first we gotta make a pitstop"

"Pitstop? We're already here" Benny informed

"Not that kind of pitstop" Ethan said, "Willow wait by the teacher's lounge for us and try not to get killed on the way"

//

"Who knew the bio lab would have such big pig brains?" Benny declared

"Well, I guess I did" Ethan smiled

"Now what, we go in there and try not to get bit?" I examined

"Pretty much"

-

"Look over there, follow me!" Ethan rasped, we followed him under a foosball table in an attempt to hide, "Ok, so, we throw the pig brain, grab the coffee and then we're home free"

"I don't think you understand the meaning of home free" Benny whispered as his phone began to ring

"And I don't think you understand the concept of silence" I muttered, "Turn that thing off!"

"Hello? – I can't talk – What? — Really? That's amazing!"

"Benny!" Ethan groaned

"Five hundred minutes, unlimited texts, thirty bucks, that's good right?"

"Hang up!" I demanded

"Ok, pig brains, go!" Ethan slid the tub of brains across the floor, into a corner far enough so we could get the coffee. "Alright, I'm going for it. Willow, cover me!"

"Seriously!?" I followed Ethan across to the table as he grabbed the cup.

"Alright, got it, let's go!" We turned our backs to the same P.E teacher that attacked Ethan earlier, amking him jump, "Crap, I dropped the sample!"

"I'll get the coffee, you two go!" Benny exclaimed

"Round the corner, here!" I insisted, dragging Ethan past the lockers. We barely stood there for two seconds before footsteps echoed our exact moves.

"Benny?" Ethan called out, "Is that you?"

Suddenly, Benny jumped from around the corner, making Ethan jump, "Benny! Are you alright?"

"Never better, check this out!" We stood there waiting for Benny to show us something when someone once again popped out at us

"Cool!" Rory yelled

"AH!" we all jumped

"Is that hot chocolate?" he continued, "Gotcha! Check out what I swiped from the teacher's lounge! Hicks took this from me in September!"

"Wait, Rory, you went in the teacher's lounge?"

"Candy, games, TV, couches-"

"Zombies?" Benny urged

"Really? I just thought they were all really grumpy"

"Whatever, we have to get this coffee to the chemistry lab" Ethan demanded

"Chemistry? Boring" Rory sighed "I'd rather smack me some zombies! RV away!" Before I could get a word in, he raced off back to the teacher's lounge.

"Be careful?" I yelled, moving around the corner

"We better rearm," Ethan suggested, pulling a new fire extinguisher off the wall. We walked back around to Benny smiling awkwardly

"Let's get this cure going huh?"

//

"Thanks Sarah, did you see my Mum?" Ethan asked

"We exchanged a few words" she laughed awkwardly, "You okay Benny? You look really sweaty"

"Yeah, I'm fine, I'm pumped, let's do this, Zombie cure!"

"There's definitely something going on here" Ethan examined, "These cells are like neurons, like brain cells but they're mutating"

"K, mutant neurons, cool"

Just then, a herd of zombies showed up once more and were trying to break down the door. "Company! Just speed up the geeking!"

"You can't rush science!"

"You can if you don't want your brain eaten!" I added as Sarah blasted the zombies with the fire extinguisher.

"What happened? The neurons are gone" Ethan groaned, "It just looks like plain old coffee, it's like it cured itself just sitting there"

"Maybe it has to be fresh?" Sarah suggested

"Hot, that's why the zombies hate the fire extinguisher because it's cold"

"Great, so we just wait here until January?"

"Can't we just blast the AC or something?" I questioned

"Sounds like a plan! Benny pack up we gotta fight our way to the mechanical room" Ethan croaked

"Who are you kidding? They'll break you like a fingernail. Willow and I will go"

"Oh, if you wanna go" Ethan chuckled awkwardly

"Totally, next zombie rescue is on us!" Benny added

"Whatever, let's go Sarah"

//

"Come on, why can't there be something as simple as an on switch?" Sarah groaned. We had been trying almost every switch in sight for ages now, this was hopeless.

"Are those footsteps?" Sarah asked

I listened closely as the steps got closer, the person finally being revealed, "Oh thank god," I sighed, "Rory, you're pretty geeky, do you know which one is the AC monitor?"

"Brains" he groaned

"Shit!" Sarah yelled, Rory grabbed her arms. "Don't bite me or you're gonna be the most undead vampire who ever undied!"

"Sarah, just bash him against the wall or something!" I suggested, there wasn't much I could do to help except continue pressing buttons and pulling levers.

She took Rory by the arms and slammed him against one of the machines, which coincidentally, was the AC monitor.

"Huh, it worked, guess you're cooler than you look after all" Sarah looked down at Rory, "You coming to help them?" she asked

"I'll look after him" I pointed down at the unconscious blond

"Ok, make sure he doesn't bite you" she joked

"Ha, ha"

It'd been a few minutes since the AC was turned on, I sat by the wall with Rory's head in my lap. I ran my fingers through his hair so when he woke up, it'd be a calm situation more than a 'where the heck am I?' sort of thing.

"Mmm" he hummed, rubbing his eyes

"Hey, Zombie Boy. Ya know, your hair is really soft"

"What happened? My head hurts" he mumbled, sitting up beside me

"You tried to save the teachers, got bit and then Sarah knocked you out, but thanks to you, the AC turned on and nobody's a zombie anymore!" I reassured

"But where is everyone?"

I stood up and reached my hand out, "Come on, let's go find them"
