Numbers and letters were scrolling on several screens installed in a kind of large control panel, the main characteristic of the room that stood out in this pile of cables and iron rubble. Another room was connected to this one by a door and one could see inside thanks to a thick glass of many layers that replaced the wall. A strange machine was at work on the other side, several mechanical arms moving in synchronized rhythm, all under the sharp and bitter gaze of the scientist behind this invention.

The gray-haired man was standing right in front of the window, a beaker filled with a black liquid in his hands. A white-furred Persian cat landed on his shoulder, which sagged slightly under the animal's weight. The scientist stroked the feline with his free hand and then took a sip of the dubious liquid in his other hand. The bitter smell that was emitted from it affirmed that it was nothing dangerous but coffee.

"How's it progressing?"

The scientist gasped at the whisper in his ear and turned abruptly, the cat jumping off his shoulder to get away from the turmoil. A man dressed in white and with equally pristine hair was smiling at him. It was a calm, serene smile, but the sky-blue blindfold covering his eyes let an ominous atmosphere float around him.

"White..."

The man named White let out a faint, satisfied hum and walked past the scientist, ignoring him to get a closer look at the result of his hard work.

"How long will it take?" he asked, impatiently.

"Probably about ten days."

"That's faster than I imagined! I couldn't imagine anything less from the guy who ran the power program that runs the city's generators!"

White gently grabbed him by the chin with a smirk and pressed his lips to his for a short but passionate kiss. The scientist blushed as his heart drowned in regret as he pulled away again.

"Are you sure about your decision...?"

White seemed surprised by the question as his smile faded. He slid behind the scientist, his hands crawling up his arms before settling on his shoulders.

"Aesop," he said in a heavy tone. "Weren't you the one who wanted revenge on those people for stealing your plans? I gave you the resources you needed and everything you could possibly want..."

He bit his lip and lowered his eyes to the ground.

"I'm sorry, I'm feeling a little under the weather. I'm talking nonsense."

"It's nothing, you should go rest sweetheart. You've already given yourself enough for one day."

"You're right..."

White put his arm around his waist and led Aesop out of the engine room. The scientist looked back one last time before leaving with a final empathetic thought. There will be fireworks tomorrow huge enough to be seen from every corner of the city of Metropolis.
