Betas

They were both sitting on the same bed. Eli was leaning against the wall, his legs stretched out and Aesop resting his head on his lap.

"Did you hear, Norton and Naib became mates."

"Not like it was unexpected." replied the gray-haired one.

Norton and Naib were their two other friends. While Eli and Aesop were already acquaintanced, they had joined the group when they got into college. Their presence brought liveliness every day and though they kept bickering endlessly, it was undeniable that some chemistry was brewing between them.

"Hmm..."

"Is there something in your mind?"

Aesop lowered his phone to stare up a bit at Eli.

"I was just thinking about an alpha and an omega's relationship."

"Why does it matter... It is unrelated to us betas anyway." spat Aesop.

"I know- but just think about it... Have you never wondered how it felt?"

"Going through heat or rut once per month and risking getting assaulted? No thank you."

"Y-Yeah, there are more downsides to it... But, imagine having a soulmate, isn't it reassuring to know someone out there may be waiting for you...? Knowing you aren't alone..."

Silence fell upon the two men. Eli usually didn't bother to care about this stuff. In this society, betas were an outcast staying one amongst each other and they both had been pretty quick on the uptake. Aesop frowned and straightened up to be face-to-face with Eli.

"Are you... dissatisfied with me?"

"What- no-"

"Do you think we may part ways in the future because we don't have that special bond like them?"

The gray-haired one lowered his gaze. His chest felt tight and uncomfortable. He and Eli had known each other since high school but they only started dating not long ago so their relationship was still somewhat unstable. Seeing his boyfriend's worried expression, Eli felt a wave of remorse and softly wrapped his arms around his waist to hug him.

"Sorry, Aesop. This wasn't what I meant."

"No, it's my fault too... I got a bit carried away..."

Aesop tried to look away but Eli cupped his boyfriend's face with both hands to kiss him softly on the lips, spraying kisses all over his cheeks to convey his love. Aesop blushed a little bit harder every time Eli's lips came into contact with his skin, his temperature raising a bit. It was still unnatural for him to have the other display his affection so openly though he did not hate it.

"Don't worry, dear. I will always love you no matter what."

"You're being cheesy again..."

Eli gave him a loud peck on the lips again.

"This is an apology for hurting your feelings. I need to show you all the love I have for you until you're disgusted with me" he replied jokingly.

"Ugh, don't, you already are."

Aesop placed his hands behind Eli's head shyly to bring him closer for a kiss. Their mouths met in a sweet and loving embrace before parting just a few centimeters away. Eli's eyes looked deeply into Aesop's gray irises before the two broke into a lighthearted laughter.

"How about going to your favorite café tomorrow since we don't have any classes, the one which makes rabbit-shaped foam on their drinks?"

"Sure, and you'll be the one who pays."

"Anything you want."

Thankfully, their fight did not last long and the outcome was a small price to pay for his boyfriend's happiness.
