"O Eli, Eli, wherefore art thou Eli? If only I were not a prince, and thou a knight. Would thou be willing to deny thy name and thy oath for the promise to love me?"

He held out his hand gracefully over the balcony, this one coming to rest between the blistered fingers of the other from the severe training that had sharpened his blade. The man in the green cloak kissed him gently, brushing the silk glove from his lips as if he feared to tear off the petals of that rose whose title was like thorns, creating a barrier between their two worlds as wide as a dense forest.

His face lifted towards his beloved, the glow of the moon reflecting the amber encrusted on that iron mask.

"If we cannot be together in the light of day, then what is the point of remaining alive?" he pleaded desperately. "Aesop, thou art my sun and that is enough for me."

"What do you mean by that?" asked the prince in a doubtful tone.

"You know very well what I mean, but if it will ease your doubts, Aesop, flee with me."

"Have you lost your mind at last after becoming drunk with love?" gasped the prince.

"I am not mad." stated Eli firmly.

The knight squeezed the glove a little tighter, creases forming under the pressure of his skin against the snow-white fabric.

Aesop wavered, taking a step backward, but Eli stopped him by pulling on his hand again.

"There's a carriage waiting for us at the entrance to the clearing if you agree to come with me," he added.

"And if I refuse? If we are caught, it will be both our heads rolling in a pool of blood!"

"Then I will kill myself."

"Eli!"

"Aesop, I promise to protect you until my last breath."

The knight removed his mask, his blue eyes meeting the emerald green of his prince, imploring him with the greatest sincerity his feelings could conceal.

"Goodness, I pray to the heavens that you keep your word."

"I would never betray you, my love."

Finally, the prince smiled at his lover before jumping over the low concrete wall and into his arms.

That night, Aesop Carl Capulet escaped with his vassal Eli Clark Montague, never to be known to the world again.

The years passed without any notable events and the two men had found shelter far from their homeland, somewhere in the countryside under the disguise of a nobleman who had lost his title of nobility living with his valet who had decided to remain loyal to him.

Aesop had sold the jewels and other ornaments he had taken with him before leaving and the small fortune he had gathered was enough for them to live quietly for a long time.

Still in secrecy, he had also married Eli. There were no festivities since no one was supposed to know their real identities and so they limited themselves to simple vows in their garden which they had decorated with flowers and ribbons.

Then, one day, when Aesop had gone to town to fill their pantry, a terrible storm hit the area without warning, making the ground slippery. Many accidents happened that day and in the midst of all the mayhem, the former prince was also a victim.

The carriage he had borrowed to get home was supposed to go past a hill, but the pouring rain caused the vehicle to slide over the cliff, the ruins of the car being the only thing left at its foot, where the waves crashed brutally against the limestone, drowning out the knight's cry of desolation, who only learned of the terrible news the next day.

That morning, Eli went to the tragic site of the accident, wondering what his beloved might have felt in his last moments before joining him in the depths of the sea.
