Mister Babadook •Ch.1•

Mark was sitting at the dinner table with his parents, enjoying dinner, when his mom brought up something unpleasant for Mark to hear. "Mark, sweetie, My sister Amelia needs a baby sitter for this weekend, and she was wondering if I knew anyone for the job, so I... Signed you up." Marks Mother smiled. "But mom, I'm 17 I don't have time to baby sit some brat." Mark complained "MARK! he's your cousin, Sean." His Mother said looking over at him. "Nope, never heard of it." Mark rolled his eyes

"You mean him." His mother raised an eyebrow. "Yea... I  guess.. so what time do I go over to aunt Amelia's?" Mark questions continuing to eat. "Around 6:00, so get ready after dinner, put decent clothes on." His Father added looking up from his plate. Mark nodded. After a while the dinning room was silent and the kitchen was filled with the sound of clanking dishes.

"Mark! It's 5:30, better get over to aunt Amelia's, don't want to be late!" Marks mother yelled. Mark came running down the steps. "Bye mom!" Yelled Mark as he left. "Bye sweetie, good luck!" She yelled back. Mark began to walk to his aunt's house, who was just down the block. Mark stumble backwards and ran a little ways. A car rammed into another. The man driving one of the cars started yelling at the woman in the other car. "What are you insane?!" He screamed "I JUST GOT THIS CAR!" He continued.

The lady backed her car up, she looked over at Mark for a split second, but Mark directed his attention to the child in the back seat, who was looking back at Mark with cold lifeless eyes, the boy gave Mark a grin and then the car was gone, they drove down the road speeding. Mark put his hands in his pockets and slowly continued his walk to his aunt's house.

"Young Man!" Yelled a voice from behind him. Mark turned around quickly and looking at man in a trench coat. "Uhhh..." Mark took a step back. "Would you like to buy anything?, Maybe to help solve some problems huh?" The man got in Mark's face. Before Mark could say anything the man continued. "What ya got planned kid?! Where ya headin'?" "Uhhh... Babysitting job..." Mark was weirded out by this strange man.

The man's face lit up. "Ahhhh... I see ya know what puts a little youngster to sleep?.." Mark shook his head. "A BED TIME STORY A COURSE!!" The man yells. "I've got lots of them." The man pulled out three books, but handed Mark two. The books handed to Mark were Green eggs and Ham and One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. Mark smiled at the man, but quickly frowned. "I'm sorry sir, I have no money with me at the time." Mark sighed. "Well, I'll tell ya what, if ya take this book off my hands I can give ya them all for FREE!" The man smiled. Three for the price of free.

"Sure!" Mark smiled. It was a small town.. nothing bad could happen in such a small town.. I guess that's the reason you don't need to watch for people like this man. The man handed Mark a third book, Mister Babadook, "Thats a weird name for a children's book.." Mark looked down at the book then back up at the man, who was gone. "Well... Okay... Thanks for the books..." Mark looked around and started walking again, books in arms.  He finally reached Amelia's house and knocked on the door. Amelia answering,

"Hello Mark!" She said smiling, she stepped out of the way and walked over to a little boy sitting on the first step. "Sean, say hello to Mark," She smiled at the boy. "H-hi.. mister..." Sean's voice was a bit scared and cold. Mark didn't say anything, considering what happened to his uncle and how hard it was on his aunt. "Thanks for watching him, I'll see you guys on Monday." Amelia smiled at Mark then looked at Sean. "Now Sean, you be good for Mark ya hear." She kisses him on the forehead and walks out the door, blowing a kiss to Sean and waving goodbye to Mark. "So Sean what to ya wanna do first?" Mark sat the books on the counter.

"I-im.. kinda.. hungry.. mommy said that I wasn't supposed to eat though..." Sean said weakly. "What...Your mother won't let you eat.?!" Mark was startled. "No no.. it's just she says not to much sweets or meat before bed, but I want cookies..." Sean's voice still cold and soft. Mark was relieved a bit, "I'm sure one or two cookies won't hurt you.." Mark smiled and guided Sean into the kitchen. Sean climbed onto the counter and grabbed a cookie from the jar. He took a bite and smiled at Mark. "Thank you." Sean said perking up now.  "No problem, so what's next?" Mark asked. "Well mom usually reads me a bedtime story before I go to sleep." Sean jumps off the counter.

"Awesome. I have a couple of books with me right now actually." Mark smiled. "Go pick one out!" Sean ran over to Mark's stack of books, and pulled out Mister Babadook. "Are you sure that's the one?..." Mark was hesitant about that book. Sean nodded and they both went upstairs. Mark tucked Sean in and pulled up a chair, opening the red book. Mark smiled and began to read.
