The Music Box

Jade closed the door to Erik's room behind her and sat on the unmade bed. Then sighing she laid back down and while waiting for the feeling to happen again, she wished that she knew someone who could explain all of the questions running through her mind. Stretching her arms out behind her head, she touched the material of something hanging off the bed post. Rolling over onto her stomach she pulled the material off the post to see Drake's black coat.

She knew that with each step he took further away from her the easier it was for her to hide her thoughts, so smiling to herself, she laid the coat on her lap, beginning to search through its many pockets. Starting with the right side pocket, where her hand drifted over the cold metal of three coins. She took them out and bounced them in her hand, listening to the jangling sound they made as they knocked into one another. She searched through pocket after pocket, surprised at how many things there were in just this one coat. At the end of her search she had found three coins, an expensive pen, a small, but intricately designed key, which was the copy one to Damien's rooms, a wilted and dried pink rose folded into a neckerchief that she'd given him six months ago, and a necklace with a sapphire pendant. She was most interested in the rose. Why did he still have it? He'd probably left it in his pocket by mistake and it had stayed there when he'd left the coat with the train company. She carefully put each item back in its proper pocket and then tossed the jacket back onto the bed post, slightly disappointed.

However as the coat hit the wall beside the bed, it gave of a small strand of musical notes. Jade's eyes widened as she scrambled to reach the coat once more and began to search through it, finding a hidden pocket on the inside of the jacket. Inside was a small circular golden box. She opened it and it began to play a melody. She examined the front go the little music box, where the words "to Lyra" was etched, Drake's mother's name. Damien must have given it to her and somehow after she died, Drake had ended up with the box.

Laying back, Jade listened to the tune over and over, winding it back up each time it died. It sounded familiar, like she had heard it in a dream before.
