Petra De'Vore

The lights neared and soon enough Jade could hear the muffled sound of an engine. She might've noticed that her hands and feet were numb and that she was about to lose consciousness, but the thoughts of how utterly stupid she had been, continued to run through her mind. She felt so guilty. This was completely her fault and Drake would suffer the consequences because of her utter stupidity.

"Hey it's a girl!" a voice shouted in the dark or maybe it was the light. Everything was so confusing to Jade and suddenly she felt as if someone was lifting her, but she hadn't the strength to open her eyes. Then everything blurred out of her mind.

"I think she's waking up," the same voice said. With a moan, she opened her eyes. She was sitting by crackling fire in some home and there was a little boy sitting right beside her staring at her like she were a new pet.

"Who are you? Where am I?" she moaned the obvious questions that popped into her mind.

"However the small boy only shoved a steaming bowl of soup and a spoon towards her, "Sis, says you have to eat this."

Frowning, Jade noticed that she wasn't wearing her own clothes, but rather some sort of wooly robe that was warm, but itched her skin terribly. Reluctantly, she took the hot saucer from the boy, whose eyes were as big as owl's as he continued to stare at her.

"Sis!" he shouted again, "come in here!"

"What is it Robbie?" A familiar voice said, crossly and Petra stormed into the room. "Oh you're awake," she said rushing to Jade's side.

"That's what I said!" Robbie sighed. Exasperated, he threw his little hands into the air. "Nobody ever listens to me!"

"Oh, it's past your bed time!" Petra fussed at him and sent him out of the room.

"How are you?" She asked, turning to Jade. "You need to eat all that soup."

Jade felt like she had suddenly been hit with a bolt of lightning. How had she not seen how beautiful this girl was when they had first met? Had the goggles and goofy clothes really covered up her attractiveness? Her large green eyes framed with long, thick dark lashes, her pouty deep pink lips, her sculpted button nose and her thick orange hair. Jade mouth must have parted slightly in awe. She had never seen anyone like her before.

"Eat it," Petra snapped at her, breaking her out of her thoughts.

Obediently, Jade picked up her metal spoon and sipped at the potato soup. It felt good running down her sore, cold throat. "How did I get here?" She didn't look up at Petra this time.

"We - well that is to say, my older brothers, found you just sitting on the side of the road freezing to death. You weren't that far from my house actually. So they stuffed you in the car and brought you here. You've been sleeping for an entire twenty-four hours," Petra answered, studying her with her darling green eyes as if Jade were the most interesting thing in the world. "Damien White owes me one now," she smiled.

"What! It's been that long?" Jade looked out of the nearest window, which was cluttered with all sorts of things from clocks to scarves, goggles, necklaces, an array of tools. It was dark outside. "Have I time traveled at all?"

She nodded. "Don't worry your pretty little head off though," she reached down to pick up Jade's hand to show her an impressive golden ring made up of tiny gears all working, ticking, moving as one. "I set you to a time that would be safe. Sorry that I didn't mention where to find me while we were on the train."

As Jade stared, mesmerized at the ring, Petra's cat tiptoed in silently and began to rub his fury white body along Jade's side, purring loudly. She looked down at him and smiled. "Teach me how to work it."

"Here," she said taking thing ring off, "it's simple, see that knob on the side? Turn it."

So Jade turned the tiny knob, afraid she might break it. The entire device seemed so delicate. Immediately the ring popped open. Jade forced a scream back down her throat. The ring had spread out so that there were numbers on small metal knobs standing up. "That's for the year," Petra said pointing to each of the four sets of numbers one by one, "that's for the month, that's the day, and the last is the time. See?"

She reached forwards and spun the knobs, showing Jade that there was a string of numbers from zero to nine around each little ring. "It forces you to only time travel when you want to once each day."

"Thanks," Jade said fiddling with the rings, "how does it start though?"

"Turn the knob once more, but set them back to zero before you do that so that you don't time travel at twelve o'clock in the morning to whatever we just set it to. You see every time after you time travel it automatically resets itself to zero," Petra smiled, "by the way where's that blockheaded boyfriend of yours? I can drive you to wherever he's staying tomorrow morning, if you want."

"Oh my God!" Jade shouted, nearly dropping her bowl of soup. "I have to leave. He must be out of his mind with worry. We have two days before we board the train and if I'm not there . . ."

"Hold on," Petra said, putting her hands on Jade's shoulders, "do you even know where he is?"

"He's in the city in a shop above a bakery," she answered, "do you know where that is?"

"Mhm," Petra said in a sweet voice with wide eyes, nodding her pretty head up and down, "yeah it's on that street with that name next to that place right?" She spat sarcastically and then rolled her eyes with a sigh. "You got, the name of the bakery?"

"No," Jade moaned, "and there's no way that he'll know where I am! He must be freaking."

"Typical," Petra sighed.
