In a Dream

Sitting beside Damien was even more boring than beside Drake as expected and she soon fell fast asleep. It was an odd dream that began to form inside her head, but maybe it was loosely based off an old memory, mixed with what had just opened before she fell asleep. It was one of those dreams where she found herself watching instead of actually being in the dream.

"Jade," Damien spoke incredibly softly to her. A young version of her self turned to look at him with large curious blue eyes. She could have only been five or six. He smiled, "Come here my darling."

It was odd because they were in that same courtyard, but at the same time it would have been completely normal if she had been there with Damien when she was younger given that she did live with him for the first ten years of her life.

"What?" Her sweet soft voice asked innocently.

"We need to go back inside," he crouched down and opened his arms to her, inviting her to come closer. She sucked hard on her lips. Then slowly moving towards him, she took his hand or rather finger with her tiny hand. He kissed her on the forehead and pulled out a rose from his pocket and gave it to her. She smiled filled with absolute delight as he guided her back to the very same dining room that she was now sleeping in. He sat down in a chair and then gently picked her up and sat her in his lap, where she was perfectly content to play with the blood red rose, but Jade was cringing watching her dream self.

"Damien," the king sighed half angrily, "why have you brought a four and a half year old to my dinner? Do you see any other children here? Anyone under the age of twenty even?"

Damien with what seemed like a great trouble finally tore his eyes from Jade and placed them on the king darkly, replying calmly, "She isn't bothering anyone is she?"

"No," the king muttered, looking away with a shiver, "but she is completely distracting you."

"There's nothing to be distracted from, if that's the problem your highness," Damien sighed, picking Jade up and setting her back down in his lap so that she was now facing him.

"Where did you even get that kid?" He laughed, "You know that she almost looks exactly like-"

"Shh," Damien spoke coldly to the king, "she looks like no one but herself."

"Damien," Dane spoke timidly, approaching him from behind and standing at the edge of his chair, "let me take her so that you can get back to what you were doing."

Suddenly the tiny version of herself let out a soft scream and began to cry, but not in a wailing sort of way. Tears were streaming from her eyes, but she wasn't moving a muscle and Jade could imagine the paralyzing fear wrapping around her heart like it had so many time before as the small Jade stared at a berry red bubble of blood growing on the tip of her finger where a thorn on the rose had pierced her flesh. Her breathing began to grow laden as she panicked.

Damien immediately grabbed her small finger and stuck it in his mouth, making his older brother frown and small Jade stare deep into his mesmerizing eyes. Her breathing slowly began to become normal again and as Damien released her finger Dane handed him a strip of cloth which he tied around the tiny wound before any more blood could seep out.

"She isn't your daughter though?" The king asked, still trying to find out who she was.

"No, just an orphan," Damien replied through a shaky voice, "but that is what she is to me, yes."

"And your real son?" The king laughed.

"What about him?" Damien growled with one raised eyebrow.

"Nothing at all," the king laughed even harder.

Damien rolled his eyes and then directed all of his attention back onto Jade, "Are you all right, my love?"

She nodded silently and he kissed her forehead and then picking her up handed her to Dane.
