A Short Breakfast

Jade woke the next day to the smell of breakfast being baked, bacon sizzling, eggs frying, and bread toasting. Slowly she opened her eyes to the morning light to find that Drake was no longer in bed.

"Will you toss me the butter?" Erik asked from across the room. There was a loud clatter. "I didn't mean throw it!"

"It's what you said," Drake muttered sleepily.

Yawning, she slid her arms down through the sheets, reaching for, her dress laying on the floor. Clutching the material she brought it up to her and changed into it underneath the sheets. Then barefoot she stood up and stretched, raising her arms high above her head.

Drake walked up to her and kissed her lightly on the lips, quickly taking a step back. He hadn't forgotten about his injured tongue. "Good morning, love."

She gave him a small smile, but nothing more, "Have you two already eaten?"

Setting the frying pan that he'd been holding down, Erik answered, "No, come over to the table we were about to eat."

Drake walked the short distance to the table and pulled out a chair for her, kissing her on the head once she had sat down. And once he had sat down himself, he gently grabbed her hand. Why was he being so timid? You scared I'm gonna bite you?

You've done it before, he thought to her, tracing his thumb along her hand.

Because you deserved it, she said slipping her hand away to take the plate of warm food that Erik was offering to her. She knew he wouldn't be able to keep this act up for long because sooner or later he'd let his temper get the best of him.

Just playing my role, he smiled at her and then also took a plate of breakfast.

For some time, the three of them sat in silence as they chewed and swallowed their food. Except for the occasional clink of silverware it was dead silent and Jade couldn't decide whether it was because everyone was tired or if Drake and Erik had had a fight before she had woken up. However, if they had had a fight she probably would have heard it.

Looking up from her plate of eggs and toast, she noticed that both Drake and Erik were in their school uniforms, which was crafted out of a stiff, dark blue material, and decorated with golden buttons. Drake must have picked it up from somewhere earlier that morning. It consisted of a coat, matching pants, boots, and a hat. It was very formal looking.

"You're both going to the Academy today?" she asked, breaking the silence.

Both boys tore their eyes away from their food to look at her. "Yes," Drake answered, looking across the room at a clock on the wall, "and actually we should be going or we'll be late."

Erik nodded in agreement, "Wait, Drake," Jade muttered, "why are you going? I thought you finished the school. Isn't that why you're at Damien's?"

The ghost of a smile stretched across his face as he stared at her in confusion. "No," he laughed, "I thought you knew. Damien had me take an absence of leave from the Academy. I'm welcome back anytime he'll let me come here and that happens to be now."

Jade pursed her lips. Why hadn't she known that? She felt like she did, maybe at some point, but had somehow forgotten, "They let you do that?"

Erik laughed from across the small table, "The school board really loves your boyfriend down there. Treat him like he's royalty or something."

Tension began to build as Drake turned toward Erik, raising his eyebrows at Erik's obvious jealousy.

"They like you because of Damien?" Jade asked, touching Drake shoulder to turn him back to her.

"No," he coughed, choking on his food. "God no, they hate him. They hate me!" He turned to look at Erik. "He's crazy. The only reason they let me stay and with so little rules, even after the whole ordeal from least year is because, well . . ."

"Because he's the best flier they've ever had and inventor at that since Damien," Erik sighed. "So even though he kills my brother, he gets to stay."

"Again," Drake said through clenched teeth, "I did not kill him."

Erik rolled his eyes, but let the subject drop. "Do you wanna come?" He asked Jade.

She glanced at Drake who was slowly shaking his head at her. She bit her lip, "No, um actually I wanted to know if you knew anything about a device that helps time travelers control when they time travel?"

Erik's eyes shifted to Drake as he stared him down skeptically. "Why?" He asked slowly.

"What are you looking at me for?" Drake laughed. "It's not my power. You know that very well. It's her's. She found out yesterday."

"Time travelers are rare," Erik said, still talking so slow that his voice became monotonous. "I haven't the slightest clue to what you're talking about, but if there is such a thing it would be here in Monorail."

"That's perfect," Drake hissed, throwing his knife on the table. "You listen to me," he snapped grabbing Jade's arm forcing her to turn towards him as he shook her, "when you travel today, stay in this room and don't leave. There's no telling when you'll go to and if something happens to you I won't be held responsible."

"Calm down," Erik muttered, frowning at Drake's sudden burst of anger towards Jade. "Does Damien know about it?"

"Oh, well that's where it gets interesting," Drake said, releasing Jade's arm, "that's who she traveled to."

"Drake, I'm talking to Jade," Erik said, holding out a hand to silence him and then turning to Jade, trying to hide the shock on his face asked as calmly as he could, "You traveled to . . . Damien? At what time?"

"It doesn't really matter," Jade responded, shaking her head and picking up her fork began to eat.

"Jade, it actually does," Erik said, still keeping calm, although she could tell that he was about to snap. His face was beginning to turn red and a vein in his neck was throbbing so violently it was about to burst.

"Look, you barely know the current Damien, yet alone the one from seventeen years ago," Jade sighed, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hands.

"You don't actually trust him?" he asked Jade, but when her only response was a roll of her eyes, he turned to Drake, "She isn't serious?"

Drake smiled, letting his eyes sparkle with exasperation and then put a hand to his mouth as if to hide his smile. "It just gets better and better."

"Oh my God," Jade dropped her fork on the table and stood up. "Neither of you met him and nothing happened. You're both overreacting and . . . and prying!"

"Honey, sit down, you should eat," Drake reached out to grab her hand, but she took a quick step away.

"Jade, you can't travel back to him," Erik commanded her, "there is no way someone could change from being good to what he is now and if he comes off as nice then he is definitely up to something."

"No, if he was then he would've done it long, long ago when he first met me as a child," then putting a hand to her head, "why the hell am I arguing about this with the two of you?"

"Where are you going?" Drake asked as Jade began to walk towards the door. She turned around to see him leaning back into his chair giving no sign of any intention to chase after her and gave him a look that said you already know. Then she spun back around to open the door.

Erik eyed their glances at one another suspiciously and then asked, irritated, "Where is she going?"

The door slammed shut. "How am I to know, but in all honesty," Drake said, standing up, "it isn't wise to allow her to be running around when she could time travel at any given mo-"

"Then we should go get her before it's too late," Erik interrupted him, rushing towards the door.

"But," Drake said, grabbing Erik by the shoulder and bringing him to an abrupt stop, "you need to get to the Academy because unlike me you cannot afford to be late."

"Are you saying we should just . . . let her go? On her own?" Erik frowned as he brushed Drake's hand off of his shoulder.

"Not at all," Drake laughed, "you did."

"You're a real pain in the ass," Erik growled as he grabbed his coat, which was hanging beside the door and stumbled through the door, hurrying after Jade.
