February 1941... Aloha

It was official, Rafe was going into war and there was nothing I could do but show I support him. So here we are again... Sitting in a cab to say goodbye to my only brother. Once again the cab ride was quiet, it was only Rafe, Danny, and I. Rafe had told Evelyn to not come because if she came then it meant she really loved him. We pulled up to the train station tipping the driver and grabbed Rafe's bags. Well, Danny and Rafe carried them since they didn't let me help. It was a quiet walk into the station, Rafe was looking around for Evelyn. "Thought you said you told her not to come," Danny said, I turned my head to Rafe to see what he had to say.

"Yeah, I did," he answered blankly, still looking around. "Then why you looking for her?" Danny asked, this time I spoke.

"He's using it as his test, if she comes he'll know she really loves him" Rafe smiled and Danny nodded. "All aboard, track 57!" The man yelled, Danny sat down Rafe's bag. Rafe put his cap on so now he was in full uniform. I couldn't hold the tears in. I walked over and wrapped my hand around his neck and pulled him into a tight embrace. "Please come back" I whispered my voice breaking he let me go and placed a kiss on my forehead.

"I love you Kenz, I'll write I promise, can I talk to Danny alone?" I nodded and placed a kiss on his cheek before heading towards the exit. I turned and saw Rafe pulling Danny into a hug, images of the 3 of us playing when we were younger and the first time we flew in a plane flashed before me. A tear rolled down my cheek, I turned back and sat on a bench to wait for Danny. After a few minutes, Danny found his way to me and instantly pulled me into his chest. We walked out and signaled a cab once they pulled up. Danny held the door open for me. I thanked him and got in. He sat next to me and we told the cab driver the address to the hotel. I glanced out the window and saw Evelyn running into the station as we pulled away. "Oh no" is all that left my mouth, Danny put his arm around me and I buried my face into the crock of his neck and eventually drifted off to sleep.

"Kenz... Kenz wake up" someone said, rubbing my arm. I open my eyes to see Betty smiling at me, I look around to see I'm in my hotel room in my bed. "Come on, it's time to go," she said quietly, helping me up.

"Wait, how did I get here?" I asked, walking over to my suitcase grabbing a pair of jean shorts and a tank top and undergarments. "Danny carried you out of the cab and layed you in your bed and said it'd be best not to wake you that you needed your sleep. You slept the whole day." She explained my eyes widened at the realization I slept that long, "now go get changed I'll pack your bag." I gave her a smile and pulled her into a hug.

"Thanks," I said and walked to the bathroom. Betty may only be 17 but she's smart, she's the second nurse I'm closest to besides Evelyn. I got changed, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and did my hair. I came out and she was right. She packed all my stuff and set it on my bed. I grabbed my things and put on my converse and headed out. We went in a car, well a few of them, then got on a train, then finally onto a ferry.

"This is so exciting," Evelyn said as we all looked around us at the beautiful sight of Pearl Harbor. "You know there's about 100 ships on Pearl" Sandra spoke up. "But how many sailors per ship?" I rolled my eyes at Betty's question but laughed.

"It depends, there's more on a battleship than a sub, I would say on average, 2,000" Sandra explained I kind of tuned them out as I looked upon the harbor. I waved back at the sailors that were waving at us. "Girls I think the odds are in your favor" I hear Evelyn say as I tune back into the conversation. "Yeah like 4,000 to 1," Martha says we all laugh. Betty puts her white sunglasses with little palm trees on the corners and jumps up and faces the boys. Whistles and cheers could be heard, "see you on the beach boys!" Barbra yells waving at them blowing them kisses. I laugh and roll my eyes. The boat comes to a stop and docks, we grab our bags and start to walk off.

"Hello, ladies." We all responded hi, "you will be staying in that little beach house right over there. " The man points over to a cute kind of cream-colored beach house. "Thank you," I say he nods and we pick up our bags and start heading over there. After a short walk, we stood right in front of the porch. I walked up the steps and opened the door the others followed in pursuit. "Wow, it's so beautiful," I say as I looked. There were some couches and chairs with floral patterns. The bathroom was on the side and there was a walk-in kitchen. There was a note on the fridge.

"Dear Ladies, thank you for coming out to help, please get changed into your uniforms and get to the hospital. Can't wait to meet you! Oh and Aloha."

I read aloud to the girls, "well you heard what it said, let's go get changed" I say with a smile. I walk up the steps and into a hallway leading into 3 separate rooms 2 beds in each. I walk into the one on the right and placed my stuff on the bed. I hear a knock at the door. I turn and see Evelyn, "mind if I room with ya?" She asked with a smile, "not at all" I said returning the smile. She placed her stuff on the other bed, I walked over to the closet and opened it. I walk over to the door and stick my head out to the hall "there's uniforms in the closets!" I yell out to everyone I go and grab one that's my size and walk down to the bathroom to change, I quickly change into the white dress. I take the sides of my hair and pin them back, I leave 2 strands in front to frame my face. I bobby pin the hat to my head, I take one final look at the mirror and walk out. Not too long later everyone was dressed and ready to go, "ok let's head out," Evelyn said, we all laughed and walked off the porch and headed to the hospital.

It was not too far from the house, we soon entered and were amazed by how big it was. "Welcome ladies," a nurse said, "hi" we all responded the excitement clear in our voices. "I have to do a coasting sunburnt rump before I can show you around," she said, lifting a towel on a guy revealing his bad sunburn. We all laughed slightly and continued to look around. The day moved pretty slow from then on, they took us on a tour of the hospital, it was definitely bigger than some of the others we've been to. They told us we get the rest of the week off we start next week. "Alright girls, let's hit the beach with the boys!" Barbra yelled excitedly, throwing her hand up, the others cheered and we headed back to get changed. We walked into the small house, all heading to our rooms. Evelyn entered the room first, me following in pursuit, I walk over to my bed with my bags and grabbed my favorite swimsuit. It was black bottoms with a red twist tie top. I grabbed my suntan lotion, wrap sandals, and what I think is one of Rafe's old T-shirts. I go to the bathroom and get changed. I put my hair in 2 dutch braids, put the T-shirt on and grabbed my sandals, suntan lotion, and a towel, and headed downstairs. I walked outside and sat on the bench to put on my sandals. I turned and looked out at the crashing waves while I waited for the girls. A few minutes went by and the girls were finally ready, "you girls take forever!"

I laughed standing up Betty walks over to me linking our arms and we all head to the beach. We soon get to the beach. I bed down and undo my sandals and place them in my hand and start walking onto the beach, the warm sand feeling good on my feet. I stand there and take a deep breath breathing in the crisp air. I see the girls running into the water. I look around and see a little cave that leads onto a rock ledge, I head over and enter the small cave that looks like a beautiful night sky. I walked out to the ledge and set my towel down, I set my sandals and quickly applied some suntan lotion then sat down on my towel with my feet dangling off the edge and just looked out at the water. I was mesmerized by the beautiful bright blue water crashing upon itself. I looked down at the charm bracelet that Danny had gotten me, smiling at the memories that came flooding back. I placed my hand back down by my side, I closed my eyes and leaned back on my hands feeling the beach breeze upon my face.

"So that's where my T-shirt went," someone said with a laugh, I turn my head a smile growing on my face. "Danny!" I say getting up and wrapping my arms around his neck, his around my waist holding me tight. "What the hell are you doing here?" I asked happily, he let out a little laugh. "Well, I was gonna tell you when we dropped off Rafe but never got the chance. We got stationed here heard they needed some more guys down here. They were running low." He answered with a smile, I looked and saw he was in a tan greenish plain shirt, camo pants, and bulky boots. "I see you were on duty," I say with a smile and raised eyebrow, he looked down at his attire then back at me. "Oh yeah, they were giving us a tour then gave us the rest of the week off, so I thought I come to see how crowded the beach was and I saw you sitting on the ledge so thought I'd come surprise you."

"How'd you know it was me?" I asked, he smirked at me, "well it's not because you're the love of my life, and we've known each other for all our lives." He says sarcastically, I roll my eyes and laugh, "you're wearing the bracelet I got you," he says pointing to it smiling, I nod laughing. "Makes sense" we look at each other for a moment, he gently places his hand on my cheek I lean into his touch. I place mine on top of his "you're so beautiful" he says in a soft tone "and you're still so sweet," I said rather quietly he pulls me to his chest holding me tight. I gripped his T-shirt in my hands and started to slightly sob. "It's been so hard not having you guys there... Being alone those years." Danny held me tighter if even possible, "I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I can't imagine what you must've felt." He lets me go and cups my face with his hands wiping my tears away with his thumbs, "I promise, I will never leave you alone like that again. Plus with Rafe gone, we're what each other has left." I smile and nod. He takes my hand and we sit on the ledge. I rest my head on his shoulder as he rests his head on top of mine as we watch the waves crash on the rocks enjoying each other's presence.
