GOLDEN DAYS!

"something I wanted to say, but lost desire to."

Text from; Caro Forbez                                                                                                                                                         Are you coming home again?

Text to: Caro Forbez                                                                                                                                                               Which one?

"Caro?" I open the door to the Forbes residence and step inside, "Caroline?" she should be able to hear me, vampire senses and all. I can hear banging coming from upstairs, not violent banging or loud banging, but just the sound of someone speeding through their room. I stroll over the steps of the wooden stairs and look at Caroline's room. A light shines through the opening underneath.

"Care, come on. I know you're in there." The sound of a drawer closing violently.

"Just a second, I'm coming!" I shake my head and open the door anyways. Pillows and blankets have been spread over the carpeted floor of Caroline's room, those tacky blow up mattresses that always end up with your bones touching the hard floor have been emptied and put back into their boxes.

"This is what you were hiding from me?" I haven't seen her in a while but she looks different anyway. The last time we really talked was the day after her mom tried to kill the Salvatores, we have been distant ever since. "That you had a sleepover?" a guilty look takes over her face.

"I thought.." I take a deep breath and let it out slowly, "you thought it would hurt me." She nods gently, her blonde locks bouncing up and down.

"I am a little," I sit down on her bed and she takes a seat next to me, "but I haven't been a good friend or niece lately. And I would understand why Elena wouldn't really want me there." Caroline places a calm hand on my leg and turns her head to look me in the eye.

"Elena doesn't hate you at all Lola. She is just intimidated by you, like most people are. Not just because you almost married her current boyfriend, which we totally gossiped about last night by the way, I'm sorry." I laugh abundantly.

"But also because you are so hard to read, it means that it takes a while to figure you out. You grew up in this place that is so far beyond our imagination and you experienced things there that the kids of our age don't ever experience in this town." I nod.

"I get it, and you don't have to feel bad for not inviting me to this sleepover. I've just never had one before, so the experience flying by just kind of, hurts I guess." She nods back and rubs the hand over my leg.

"I love you Lola," she smiles that sweet smile at me and I remember the feeling of family that I have with her, nothing like I experienced with Katerina yesterday.

"I love you more Care," I hug her tightly and I hold her there for a while, just breathing in the smell of sweetness and the people I'll lose.

The Grill is a small little bar and restaurant in the middle of town, it's often the place where first beers are had with parents on your birthday, and the pace where the rest of the teenage population of Mystic Falls likes to spend their time out of school. Without any alcohol of course. The walls are decorated with wooden beams and spread over the open space are booths and black square tables. At the end of the room is the bar, with more than enough space to sit at. I can already imagine a certain Salvatore sitting there right now. But that isn't where we are sitting. Bonnie, Caroline and I have collected around one of the smaller tables in The Grill and are discussing the newest plan.

"Okay. So tell us about this big, witchy plan you've been cooking up." Caroline places her arms on the table in a readied stance. Bonnie sits forward a little, a bit closer so she can make sure no one will be able to hear us.

"We still don't know the extent of what Elijah's up to." Caroline shakes her head no.

"No, we don't."

"So, I'm gonna ask Luka to tell me what he knows." My hand goes up in a questioning gesture, all this time I have only been aware of the plans that the Salvatores were making, in my own little conquest for family and memory. With remembering Klaus' face, which has slowly been coming to me, in waves.

"Luka is Elijah's personal witch, who has been totally using Bonnie to further his plan." I nod and take a sip of the cup of coffee in front of me.

"Luka's not gonna tell you anything Bonnie," the witch just smirks.

"I didn't say he was gonna have a choice." I remove my lips from the white cup and leave a lipstick stain behind its surface. Before I can say anything I see Caroline look past me, "what?" I hear Bonnie say before we both turn our head at the same time. Matt is standing there, Matt Donovan who I haven't seen since the very tragic carnival where Caroline almost killed me. I look back at Caroline and she waves at him, Matt doesn't wave back and instead walks away without even acknowledging Caroline or the rest of us.

"What was that about?" I ask when I turn back to Caroline, if she weren't a vampire she would be blushing right now.

"Uh, I don't know. I thought that we were.. I don't know." She stutters her way through the sentence and I can see the growing sadness in my niece's eyes.

It's only when Caroline is gone, to talk to Matt and make herself not seem like a huge bitch, that I dare to ask Bonnie the question I have been dreading.

"Bonnie I need your help." She scoots her chair closer to mine so she can hear me better.

"Caroline can't know," Bonnie looks through the crowd for her blonde haired friend and finds her standing with Matt in heated conversation.

"She won't hear, she's distracted." I nod and take another sip of coffee to psych myself up.

"I'm dying Bonnie," her eyebrows crinkle up and wrinkles start for in her forehead.

"I need to find something to slow the aging process. My body is aging faster because it is so old and frail. It's why the vampire blood doesn't help me." I whisper anyway, even when I believe in Bonnie's judgement that Caroline won't be hearing us. She thinks for a minute.

"There are some herbs that might help. It won't do much but it might give you another year or so, I'll get them for you." I squeeze her hand and I know the vibration that goes through both of us by heart now, the sensation of magic interacting with a witch.

"Thank you Bonnie,"

Caroline and I are still sitting at the table, looking at Bonnie and Luka talk by the pool table, seduction, nice one Bon-Bon.

"No one told me Luka was cute." I whisper and I hear Caroline giggle through her nerves. It's Jeremy Gilbert who interrupts our staring session.

"Hey, how's it going?"

"Hey Jer-" I am interrupted by Caroline, "What are you doing here?" he sighs and smiles.

"Bonnie called. I wanted to help. How's it going?" we look over at Bonnie and Luka, Bonnie's hand is on his and she is laughing at him.

"She selling it and he's buying it. She's giving him the sex smile." Jeremy looks almost disgusted with the words and it's a feeling I know well.

"All right, Caroline. I get it." She flashes me a knowing smile and for a second this feels like the most normal moment I have had in this town so far. Annoying your friend's little brother with his crush on the older girl. It all fades away however when Elijah's witch collapses and we carry him to Caroline's house.

Luka's body has been set up in the living room, the couches and the rug easily moved out of the way by Caroline's vampy powers. She walks into the room with her arms filled with long white candles, the kind that witches always seem to use.

"We only have, like, an hour or two before my mom gets home, and these are all I could find." Jeremy and I stand up and Caroline starts handing us the candles, one by one.

"Place these evenly around the room." The candles that are left in Caroline's small hands are given to Bonnie who takes them eagerly while Jeremy and I place the candles.

"How does this work?" Jeremy asks and I commend him for the question, I stopped asking them a while ago.

"Um, I'll put him in a trance and ask him questions. It's like hypnosis." He nods, but then a confused and questioning look takes over his face.

"You sure you're strong enough for this?" Bonnie looks at the candles around her, by her feet and in her hands and in every corner of this very room, filling it.

"That's what the candles are for. I'll draw power from the flames."

"I'll get the matches." Caroline suddenly says but before she leaves the room Bonnie interrupts her with a bit of magic that is hard to ignore.

"I got it." She just shuts her eyes and the candles flare up out of nowhere, lighting the whole room, bringing a warmth with them.

"Never gonna get used to that." Jeremy laughs. I stand up and put my hands on my hips, I look at him and I smile. "Oh, come on. That's pretty hot, and you know it." Jeremy smiles a shy smile back and Bonnie just looks up at him awkwardly.

"I need a bowl of water." She says adamantly.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll-I'll go get it." He stammers out and quickly exits the room, Caroline smiles at me broadly.

"Okay. What was that? It's 'hot'?" Caroline gives the very obvious answer for me.

She whispers- "he is so crushing on you." Bonnie tries to look callous and unbothered but doesn't fully succeed. "So?"

Caroline and I both sit down across from her for a friend-tervention.

"So.. what, you'd rather be with traitor warlock over here?" Bonnie lets out a prolonged sigh.

"I'm not into Luka. It's just, you know, he understood me, and he was new and different."

Caroline shakes her head, " And you've known Jeremy since forever, and you only see him one way, as Elena's brother, but you're a witch, and I'm a vampire. You know, it's not like we're in any position..." Bonnie drums on the floor with her fingers.

"To be picky." I laugh and place my hand on her denim jeans.

"No, to judge" we all smiles at each other while Jeremy walks back into the room with the bowl of water Bonnie asks for. She gets up from the floor and takes it from him before placing it next to Luka's head.

"Looks like he's waking up." Jeremy's right, he has started to softly groan and stir in his unconsciousness. Bonnie dips her hand into the water and places her hands on the sensitive sides of Luka's head. She shuts her eyes and this time she doesn't chant anything, the only reason we know that something is happening at all is by the flames rising and falling beside us.

"How long is this going to take?" says an already bored Caroline beside me, we have sat down on the now awkwardly placed couches and are watching from afar.

"I don't know, he's fighting me." Luka is moving his head around, that must be him fighting the spell but Bonnie's hands are still firmly on his temples.

"Please stop. Please." She slowly closes her eyes and soon Luka follows suit.

"There. All right-" she takes a deep breath, "-why are you working with Elijah?"

"Klaus. We both want him dead." My head doesn't hurt as much anymore since I saw him in that memory Katherine gave me.

"You want to kill Klaus, too. Why?"

He groans, "because he has her and we have to get her away from him."

"Who.. who are you talking about?"

"My sister." Jeremy awakes me from my own personal trance, the one I entered while listening to Bonnie's comforting voice.

"His sister?" I put my finger to my lips and look at him, I don't even dare to make a "shh" noise out of fear it might wake him.

"Why does he have her?"

"He's searching for a way to undo the curse without the doppelgänger. He's forced generations of witches to help him for centuries."

"What has Elijah promised you?"

"If we help Elijah kill Klaus, he's promised to return her to us."

"And how do you kill Klaus? How do you kill an original vampire?' he starts tot thrash his body around again , fighting the trance and Bonnie's spell. He's afraid.

"He'll kill me if I tell you. Don't make me."

Jeremy shakes his head, "it's okay Bonnie. We can find another way."

"No-" Bonnie puts Luka back in the trance, using way too much power "-How will you kill Klaus?"

"After the sacrifice, Klaus will be vulnerable, weak. It's our only chance."

My heart skips a beat, if Bonnie keeps asking she will learn my secret, Elena's secret, the ones we've been carrying with us for a while now.

"After the sacrifice?" Caroline asks and she looks at me I shake my head.

"What do you mean, after?" her shoulders have tensed up completely.

"Bonnie please stop," I whisper quietly, I wish I could look into her eyes right now but they are still closed shut.

"Klaus will be vulnerable."

"But they will be dead."

"Yes. Lola and Elena have to die."

Bonnie opens her eyes and looks at me, she knows that I have known this all along. Caroline lets out a small sob and I look at her and Jeremy.

He shakes his head and he whispers so slowly, "No."
