Chapter 9: Christmas Market

"(Y/n)....(y/n)..." I hear Sean say. I groan as I turn over in my bed. "(Y/n)..." Sean said and I open my eyes to look up at him. "Sean? What's wrong?" I asked. "Daniel went over to the neighbor's house. We gotta go." He said and I quickly sit up. "Oh shit." I muttered as I get up and grab my clothes and head to the bathroom to change.

I get out of the bathroom and head down the stairs to see Sean standing by the door. "You ready?" I asked him as I grab my jacket. "Yeah." He replied after he puts on his shoes.

He opens the door and let's me through first. "Such a gentleman." I said as I wall through the door. He follows me and shuts the door.
"Alright, let's go get the little munchkin." I said and we walk out in the snowy grounds.
"Why does Daniel never listen...Maybe I'm too soft with him..." he mutters and I look over at him. "I know it's frustrating, Sean. But, in all honesty, he hasn't really interacted with anyone his age in over a month. He's only talked to us and your grandparents, so I understand him wanting to hang out with someone his age." I said as we come upon Chris's house.

We enter from the front door to see Chris is levitating his toys in the air, Daniel, who has painted his face, subtly controlling the toys with his hand. "Daniel? What is going on here?!" Sean exclaims, angrily, and the toys drop to the ground. "Sean! (Y/n)! Wait! Don't freak out! I can explain!" Daniel said, in fear. "Let me tell them..." Chris said to Daniel before he looks over at us. "Sean and (y/n), I know it sounds crazy...but...I have a superpower. You two saw me yesterday...I know you did. I was flying! I can move things...objects...with my mind!" Chris said while Sean crosses his arms and stares at Daniel, who tries to avoid eye contact.

"Oh! A superpower...Really?" I asked and Chris smiles. "YES!" He said and Sean and I glance at each other. "Well...that's pretty cool, Chris..." I said, smiling. "So you're like a superhero?" Sean asked him. "I'm Captain Spirit! I can bend any matter to my will! But that's my secret identity, so you two can't tell anybody!" Chris said as Sean and I look at Daniel. "Oh, we can keep a secret, Captain Spirit..." Sean said.

"Now you two are official members of the Spirit Squad! If you two betray us, I'll disintegrate both of you! Nah, just kidding." Chris said then he stands up. "Oh yeah, we need a...Team signal!" He said and he crosses his arms across in front of him.
"Totally! I'm gonna be...Superwolf!" Daniel said as he crosses his arms and stands up. "What's your super name, Sean?"

"How about...The Silver Runner? Cool, right?" Sean said after he thinks for a moment. "Not bad! That's true you're a great runner..." Daniel said then he turns to me. "What about you, (y/n)?" He asked. I think for a moment of a name and said. "Well, I was really into magic shows and reading fantasy books when I was younger. So...How about....The Mystic Lass?"

"Ooohh, sounds mysterious." Daniel said and I smiled just as Chris's dad walks out of the bathroom. "Okay guys, I think we're ready to roll..." he said then he noticed Sean and I. "Uh, excuse me...Who are you two?" He asked as he walks up to us. "I'm Sean." Sean said as he and Chris's dad shake hands. "And I'm (y/n)." I said as I shake his hand as well. "Oh yeah, sorry, man...You're here for Daniel. Hey, let's make it official. I'm Charles Eriksen." He said. "Nice to meet you." Sean and I said.

"Hope you guys know that Daniel and Chris are a dangerous team...We'd better watch out, or they're gonna take over the world..." Charles said. "Yeah...They share a lot of things...As thick as thieves..." Sean said to him. "Can we go get the Christmas tree now? We're both ready to fly!" Chris asked. "Yes, yes, yes...the team has been waiting too long! You two should come along too. There's nothing going on over here..." Charles said to Sean and I.

"YES! Can't wait to see all the decorations! And Sean! We could buy Christmas presents for Grandma and Grandpa...!" Daniel said as he looks over at Sean. He and I exchange looks and I shrug at his. "Uh...Okay...Sure...we'll go with you guys..." Sean said and the two boys' faces light up.
"Really? Yeaaaah!" Chris exclaims, excitedly.
"Cool!" Daniel shouts.

"Yeah, I just wish Chris and Daniel were excited about going...Okay team, I...give me a time out to clean up the backseat. I'll honk when I'm done." Chris said as he walks out of the building. "Ooo...uh...Can I use the bathroom?" Daniel asked. "Of course! You'll see my comic books." Chris said then he sits down and looks at Sean and I. "I'm glad you two are coming too...Hey, you guys wanna see my toys?" He asked as Daniel heads to the bathroom, Sean and I sit in front of Chris's toys.

"Oh! Score! The new Hawt Dawg Man!" Daniel shouts from the bathroom and I chuckle as I look down at Chris's toys. "Since you two are new members of the team, you have to know everybody...These are Captain Spirit's friends! And his enemies..." Chris said as he shows his toys. "Dude! That's pretty cool..." Sean said as I smile.

"Can you guys guess who are the good guys and the villains?" Chris asked us. "Let's see..." Sean and I muttered as we look through the toys and sort them out. "Okay. How did we do?" I asked. "You guys are good! Both of uou guessed all right! You two deserve a little reward...It's two interstellar travelers. I gave one of them to Daniel." Chris said as he hands us two little figures to us. "Wow! Thanks, Chris..." I said. "Yeah, thanks. That's awesome!" Sean said to him.

"After all, you guys are part of the team now." Chris said. "Okay. Let me introduce them to you! This is Team Spirit! The good guys. There's the Forest Warrior, Power Bear, Mar-T Rex, and Sky Pirate." Chris said as he gestures towards the toys on his right but mine and Sean's left.

"So...who are the bad guys?" Sean asked him. "That's Noctarious and the Shark-Stinger. There's also Snowmancer, but he's out in the garden. Captain Spirit kinda...took care of him. He might need a little surgery now...But they're all working for Mantroid, who's the REAL super villain! You should see his evil planet!" Chris explains.

"Why doesn't Captain Spirit stop him?" I asked him, curiously. "He tried...but failed. That's why he needs Superwolf, you know, Daniel, to prevent Mantroid from hurting other people!" Chris said. "Yeah...strength in numbers. Sounds like Mantroid is in trouble." Sean said. "Just wait until he sees what Captain Spirit can do now..." Chris said, proudly l.

"Yeah...about that...Umm...Does your dad know about any of this? Did he...see something...yesterday?" Sean asked. "No. He didn't see anything and...The power didn't work yesterday...after I fell...I...must have been too tired..." Chris replied. "Okay. Good...Uh, I mean...He could be pretty disturbed if he knew..." I said. "I'm definitely not telling Dad. I don't want to freak him out. He's worried about other stuff anyway..." he said.

"Chris...It's...none of our business, but...are you and your dad okay?" Sean asked, with concern. "Uh, what do you mean?" Chris asked. "I don't know...Claire seems to...be worried about you guys." Sean replied. "Claire's always worried." Chris said.
"Yesterday...Stephen and her talked about your dad...I think they had a talk with him..." I said and Chris looks down for a moment then back to us and said. "Dad...just gets carried away sometimes when he drinks too much...But...But we're cool. No worries."

I reach out to him and place my hand on his shoulder. "Chris...I know life can get pretty tough. Trust me. But...you'll be okay. You're an awesome kid." I said and he smiles just as Charles honks. "There's the signal. Come on, Daniel." Sean calls out as we stand up and Daniel walks out of the bathroom. "Hey! Pro tip: don't...go in there." Daniel warns and Chris begins to laugh. "Okay, Squad, let's roll!" Sean said and we walk outside.

Chris and Daniel go and climb in the back of Charles's truck. "You need my jacket? I don't want you catching another cold..." Sean said to Daniel. "No, I'm good. Thanks..." Daniel said. "And don't be waving your arms around when I'm driving, okay?" Charles said and the boys nodded. "Yeah. Remember, Daniel, don't mess around..." Sean warns. "All right. Jeez..." Daniel said.

"I'll keep an eye on them." I said as I climb up on the back of the truck with them. "You sure?" Sean asked. "Yeah, I'm fine." I said and I sit down. "Thanks for clearing the snow from the porch! You're...You're awesome!" Charles calls out to Chris as he and Sean get into the truck. "You're welcome, Dad!" Chris calls out then Charles pulls out of the driveway and we head to the Christmas Market.

Charles drives his truck across Beaver Creek and pulls up to the Christmas Market and parks. "Okay buddy, you're ready?" Charles calls out. "Yeaaahhh!" Chris said as he climbs out of the truck. Sean walks to the back of the truck as I help Daniel out of the truck. I set him down as Sean helps him down. "Okay, you're turn." Sean said and I start to climb down from the truck. Sean helps me down as he places his hands on my waist and I place my hands on his shoulders and he hoist me down.

"Thanks." I said as we stand there, my hands on his shoulders and his hands on my waist, looking at each other before I slowly remove my hands off of him. Daniel tries to leave, but Sean walks over and grabs his arm before he can. "Hey!" Daniel exclaimed. "You guys go ahead and we'll come back to meet you, okay? Brothers meeting!" Sean said to Charles and Chris. "Sure." Charles said.

"But --"

"Don't get lost!" Charles said, interrupting Daniel, and leads Chris away towards the market as Sean and I walk up to Daniel. "Dude, what the fuck are you doing? I can't believe it...How many times do we have to keep going over the rules?" Sean asked. "Don't show the power -- I know...But Chris thinks he can do all this cool stuff. I wish he could...He reminds me of Noah. I just miss having friends, Sean..." Daniel admits and I give a knowing look to Sean.

"I know man...But you can't lie to friends about something like this..." Sean said and I nod. "He could get in trouble thinking he can make shit fly...Or he could get hurt." I said to him. "So you guys want me to tell him the truth?" Daniel asked. "Well, we don't want you to lie anymore...You don't have to tell him everything, but...Don't let him think he has magic powers, okay? You swear?" Sean asked. "Okay, I swear." Daniel said, sadly. "Deal. I'm counting on you, enano." Sean said. "Me too." I said

"Can I go see Chris now?" Daniel asked. "Yeah, let's go. But don't forget what I said." Sean said as we enter the market. "Woaw...So many trees! Ugh...They look like giant cocoons...Creepy...Is this what they wrap the tree with?" Daniel asked as he looks around the market. "Yeah...I should put you in!" Sean jokes. "Shut up!" Daniel said as he runs over to Chris. "You coming, guys?" He asked. "Don't worry, we'll be around!" I said and we walk deeper into the market and over to where there were vendors selling some cute trinkets and knickknacks for Christmas.

*Sean's POV*

I walked over to one of the vendors and greet the man. "Hey, hi." I said. "Good morning, young man! It's nice to see a new face in this old town!" He said. "Thanks! It's a...super cool market you've got here..." I said. "Small towns are the best for Christmas! Who are you staying with?" The man asked. "Uh...the Reynolds?" I replied, nervously.

"Everybody knows Stephen! He was Beaver Creek's fire chief years ago...You're not his grandson, are you?" He asked. "Yes, I am." I replied. "Aww, that's great! He told me about you, but, um, that was a long time ago...It's been a few years, right?" The vendor said.
"Yeah...Family stuff..." I replied. "I bet...Anyway, look around. And if you find anything you want, I'll give you the special Reynold's Discount! Well, I'm glad to meet our fire chief's grandson! I would've given you a discount if I'd known sooner. So here you go." The vendor said and I smiled. "Whoa...thanks!" I said, appreciatevly.

"Anyway, welcome to Beaver Creek. If you need anything, just holler." He said and I nod as I look over his table. He had some neat stuff, like stuffed bears, some little wooden beavers and some snowmen. "Hey, uh...I'd like one of those...snowmen things?" I said to the vendor. "Of course! They're handmade by local kids! And, of course, you get the friendly price. To celebrate the Reynolds reunion!" He said. "Whoah! That's really cool...Thanks!" I said as I look over at the end and saw something pretty cool.

In a stand, was a collection of bracelets with different color beads with at least one charm based on an animal. And one that caught my eye was a bracelet that had black and silver beads with a wolf charm dangling. I pick it up and smiled. This would be perfect for (y/n). I thought as I set that bracelet on front of the vendor, next to the snowmen.

"Here you go..." I said. "Thanks! Anything else?" He asked me. "No, I'm good!" I said and the man nods as I pay for the items. "Have a nice day then!" He said. "Yeah, you too. Thanks!" I said and I put the presents in my pocket then turn around and see (y/n) sitting on a bench, and it look like she was drawing something.

She seemed deep in concentration and this gives me an idea. I walk past her, casually, and saw that she still didn't take notice of me and this makes me smile. I quietly turn back around and walk behind her then poked her sides as I said. "What are you doing?!" She jumps in fright and turns around to see me and I laugh. "Told ya I get you back." I said as I go and sit next to her.
She looks over at me and chuckles. "You sure did. You got me." She said as she smiles at me. "What are you drawing?" I asked as I try to look over but she moves her notebook away from me. "Not yet. I'm just putting the finishing touches on it." She said.

The last month, I've been teaching her how to draw and, honestly, she's come a long way. Now she can draw more than just stick figures.

"Oh, is it a surprise?" I asked her and she smiles, her cheeks turning red. "Maybe. I've just been working on it for about a week, and I want it to be perfect." She said, embarrassed. "Well....this is a quiet and cute place." I said as we look around the market. "Yeah....it's very quaint. I know it's a risk for us to be out here, but I'm glad we did come here. It's just a nice change of scenery." She said and I nodded. "Yeah...it is...but I hope they finish looking for a tree soon. I hate to come home and have Claire yell at us." I said and she nods in agreement.

She continues to draw but she blocks my view of it. So I just look around the place then pull out my own notebook and began to draw the market. Then I look over at (y/n) and add her to my drawing. As I finish my drawing, Chris walks up behind me.
"What are you drawing? Whoah, it's so cool! Are you like, a professional?" He asked and I look up at him and laugh. "Nah. More like the opposite." I replied and (y/n) scoffs at this. "Oh, don't be modest, Sean." She said as Chris looks at my drawing.

"You could draw comic books! The awesome adventures of...Captain Spirit and Superwolf!" He said to me. "Pretty rad for a Hollywood name. Yeah...I'll think about it!" I replied. "Hey, can you add something funny to your drawing?" He asked me. "Funny? Like what?" I asked him. "I don't know! Something cool!" He said, smiling, and I start to think.

Okay...Big question: zombies, or UFO? I thought then I smirk as I make my decision. Then I add some cartoon zombies to the drawing. "I hope I can draw like you one day..." Chris said. "I'm sure you will, man." I said as I look over my drawing as Chris walks away, then gets up from the picnic table. I look over and see that (y/n) was done as her notebook was put away. "You done?" I asked and she nods. "Yeah, let's see how the others are doing." She said and we stand up and start to head back to Chris, Daniel and Charles.

*(y/n) POV*

"Found what you were looking for, city kids?" A voice asked us. Sean and I turned around and see a woman with purple dreadlocks and a guitar laying down on the ground next to her. "Yeah. Something for my little brother." Sean replied. "You...bought your brother something...out here?" The girl snickerw. "Damn...poor kid. Sorry, I'm...just a grumpy old gal." She said. "Me and my friends have been...Crashing here for the week...Nobody...gives a shit about us...I can tell you two are not from around here." She said.

"No, no way... Just...Here for the holidays." Sean replied. "Ah! You got family." She said. "My grandparents..." Sean replied. "Gotta love the grandparents!" She said, chuckling, then she turns to me. "What about you?" She asked me. "I'm hanging out with him, I don't have family here." I replied. "Ah, so you two are a couple." She said and we give her shock look. "Oh no, no, no..." Sean and I said in unison. "We're just friends." I said as I look away in embarrassment.

"You sure? It could've fooled me...the way you two look at each other." She said and Sean and I give an embarrassed glance before I said. "No, no...we're just friends..." I clear my throat and she chuckles again. "Okay....whatever." she said, obviously not believing us.

"What about you and...your friends? Road trip?" Sean asked her. "Not really...We kinda hop from place to place, hunting for...little jobs..." she replied. "Must be a long ride." I said. "That's okay! We hop on trains. Gives us time to rest." She said, shrugging. "Man...that sounds wicked." Sean said and the girl laughs. "You have no idea...It's free and so fucking fun! Well, unless you get caught or... fall, but...we've been lucky so far. That's the best. Nobody tells us what to do. No corporation owns us..." she said.

"And you get to see so many cool places..." I said. "Exactly! Next stop is Humboldt County, California!" She said and Sean laughs. "Stoner break!" He said. "Not even close! We actually got work over there!" She said just as Daniel runs up from behind us. "Sean! (Y/n)! What are you guys doing? We picked a tree with Chris! It's all crooked, like an old witch!" Daniel said, excitedly, then he looks over at the girl.

"Oh, hi...who are you? Your hair looks so cool! Is it a wig?" He said, quickly. "Ah, well...What do you think?" She asked him. "Mmmm...I don't know...But it's really cool! I'm Daniel! What's your name?" He greets. "Hi, Daniel..." she said as she gives Daniel a high-five and a fistbump. "I'm Cassidy. I dig your superhero outfit..." she said as she points as his painted face. "I'm on a secret mission with my friend! It's very dangerous!" He said. "I can tell! I hope you get your mission accomplished!" She said then her and Daniel turn to us.

"And what's your names?" She asked. "Oh, I'm (y/n)." I said. "Oh, uh...Sean...I...I thought we told you." He said and she smirks. "Now you did." She said when a boy, alittle bit taller than Cassidy, walks up to her with his dog close behind. "Sorry, went through some shit with the guys...How much you make? You ready?" He asked then he turns towards the us. "Hello, pups..." he greets.

"Oooo, is that your doggie? So cool!" Daniel said as he looks down at the dog. "Yeah, he's been through a lot...Like most of us...So we adopted him. And he stinks!" The man said then he turns to the dog. "Yeah, you stink and you like it, huh?" He said and he bends down and pets his dog.

"He's not the only one." Cassidy grumbles. "Have you checked your hair? I think it just twitched!" The man said to her, teasingly, then he turns to us. "You two should keep your distance." He said, smiling towards us. "Hey, never too careful! Who knows what may crawl out of there?" Sean teased and I giggle as Cassidy let's out a loud laugh.

"Whoa-hoa, the boys join forces! You're already perverting him, Finn!" She said as she picks up her bag and starts packing it. "Sorry! I know suburban boys is your thing..." Finn said and immediately I felt some sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know I'm not sick and I didn't eat anything bad, so what the hell is this feeling.

"Are you kidding? You wanna talk about your scoreboard, hotshot?" Cassidy asked Finn. "Hey, no worries..." Sean said. "Come on, let's bail!" Finn said to her and she turns to us. "It was nice meeting you, Sean and (y/n) and..." Cassidy bows at Daniel as they both begin to leave. "...Daniel."

"Stay outta trouble, kids!" Finn warned us. "Goodbye!" Daniel calls out. "Hope we see you on the rails someday!" She yells and we wave them goodbye. "Yeah. See you around." Sean said as I said. "Later."

"That doggie was so cute...I miss Mushroom." Daniel said, sadly. "I miss her, too." Sean says to his brother. "Yeah, same here." I said as we see Finn and Cassidy get stopped by a man. "Hey, excuse me! Dogs have to be on a leash around here. Too many strays..." the man said. "Sorry, dude. We don't do leashes." Cassidy said to the man.

"Well, the city does. An unleashed dog is liable to a fine, so..." the man said as he looks between Finn and Cassidy with suspicion. "You're gonna fine our dog? Well, that's not very nice!" Cassidy said, very laid back like she didn't care. "Loitering is illegal, too. And you don't live here, right? Right?" The man asked. "Calm down, sweetie. We're allowed to visit the Christmas market. Our dog's not gonna eat you, look at him!" Finn said as he gestures to the dog.

"You better watch your mouth. You punks are always causing trouble...This is nice town, okay?" The man said. "Jeez...Someone needs to get laid..." Cassidy said to Finn and they chuckle. "He's out of pills..." Finn said and he chuckles at his own joke.

"That's it, I'm calling the cops!" The man threatens and Cassidy looks over at Finn.
"Oh God, he's gonna call the cops on us, Finn!" She said in a fake scared voice. "Chill out, we're leaving this shithole, anyway. You don't even have a Santa, for Christ's sake!" Finn said as they start to leave with the dog.
"Merry Christmas!" Cassidy shouts as they leave towards the parking lot while the man crosses his arms. "Fucking parasites..." he grumbles.

"Why did they fight? I don't get why he yelled like that..." Daniel asked us and Sean and I shrug. "Should we do something about it?" He asked and I look over and see the man standing by a booth, perfectly under a roof with lots of Snow. "See the snow on that booth?" I asked him. "Yeah? What about it?" He asked. "Maybe this guy needs a shower..." Sean said as he and I walk.in front of Daniel to cover him. "You know. To cool him down..." I said and Daniel laughs. "You're right! Hold on..." he said as he looks over at the booth.

"Careful...Careful..." Sean and I said as Daniel lifts his hand and laughs. "This will teach him!" Daniel said and he uses his powers to knock the snow on top of the booth's roof onto the man. The snow falls onto him and he tries shaking the snow off of him in discomfort and anger.

"Nice..." Sean and I said and we start laughing. "Come on!" The man shouts and we look at him as he shakes his head to cover up what happened.

Sean and I walk up to the truck, where Charles, Chris and Daniel are waiting. "Hey, you guys ready to go?" Charles asked us. "Yeah, all done!" Sean said. "Cool, hop in!" Charles said and Daniel, Chris and I get into the truck bed as Sean and Charles climb into the front seat. "Are you having too much fun back there?" Charles asked Chris. "Yes!" Chris replied and Charles smiles. "That's what I thought..." He said then the car pulls out of the market and drives off.
