Chapter 8: Sanctuary

One week later

"Morning, honey." Claire said as I walked into the kitchen. "Morning." I said and I see her cooking some food. "Hey, do you need help? I don't mind helping with cooking." I said and she smiles. "Of course, dear." She said and the two of us began to make some waffles. I can't believe it's been a week since we've been here. I was afraid that they would turn us in but....Claire and Stephen are among the nicest people I've ever met. They really do seem to care for their grandsons'. I thought as Claire cooks the eggs and bacon and I poured the waffle batter into the waffle maker.

After sometime, I went over to the sink and began to wash the dishes and, once again absentmindedly, started humming Christmas music. "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas. Just like the ones I used to know. Where the treetops glisten and children listen. To hear sleigh bells in the snow." I began to sing softly as I washed the dishes.

"You have a lovely voice, (y/n)." Claire said and I jump at this. "Oh, uh...." I stammer and began to cringe a bit from embarrassment.
"Don't be embarrassed, dear. You do have a nice voice. If you and the boys weren't running from the police, I would suggest you go and sing in the Christmas choir." She replied and I smile at this. "Thanks, Claire." I said just as I hear Daniel, who was upstairs playing with the train model with Stephen, said. "Sean! Finally!"

"Sean, are you awake? Breakfast's almost done, so come down when you're ready, okay?" Claire calls out. "Okay!" Sean's voice calls down and I finish the dishes. "That's enough, dear. You go ahead and take a seat." Claire said and I nod as I take a seat just as Sean walks in the kitchen, yawning. "Oh my, look who's awake..." Claire said and I smile.
"Good morning, sleepyhead..." I said to him.
"It's that bed...feels like a cloud." Sean replied as he stretches his arm. "I know!" Claire said and Sean sits down next to me.

"Daniel, breakfast time! Your brother and (y/n) are ready!" Claire called out towards the balcony. "Grandpa is showing me a boxcar!" Daniel said. "Stephen, your grandson needs to eat now! You can show him the boxcar later!" She exclaims and she turns back to us.

"I love how they're getting along..." she said. "Do you need help or...anything?" Sean asked her. "Oh, (y/n)'s already helped out with the dishes and the cooking.....but thanks for the offer." Claire said and Sean looks over at me and I smile. "Uh oh...should I be worried about the food?" He asked me, teasingly. I give him a mock offended look as I place my hand over my heart. "Are you doubting my cooking skills, Diaz?" I asked him and he chuckles a bit. "Well, the only thing I've tasted, that you've cooked, is the ravioli." He replied. "Good point." I said as I point at him and we chuckle as Daniel comes up to the table and takes a seat.

"Are you boys done playing?" Claire asked Daniel. "We had an express delivery with the passengers, but...the engine broke down!" Daniel said while Stephen walks up behind him, holding the broken engine. "Yep. Has to go straight to the workshop!" He said, smiling. "Good...No trains in the kitchen remember?" Claire said to him. "Gotcha, chief." Stephen said to her.

"Choo choo!" Daniel imitates as Stephen leaves the room. While attempting to open a drawer, Claire pulls off the metal handle. "Oh, sugar! He can fix his trains but...not my kitchen..." she grumbles as she picks up her frying pan walks over to the table. Sean, Daniel and I hold our plates up as Claire scrapes some scrambled eggs and waffles onto them. Sean reaches over the table to grab a carton of orange juice.

"Did (y/n) and I make enough? Everything's okay?" She asked as we started to take our first bites. "It's great, as usual!" Sean said. "You're the best cook ever!" Daniel complimented. "Hey, I helped!" I said and Daniel says. "Oh! You did great, (y/n)."

"Looks like you're getting cozy with this new country life, after all!" Claire said to us. "Yeah...It's nice to be far away from everything..." Sean said. "...feels like we're the only ones out here..." I added as we continued to eat. "Well, that's exactly why we love it. It feels safe, unlike the big city..." said Claire. "I get it." Sean said to her. "I like it. It's cool here!" Daniel exclaims and I nod in agreement as my mouth was full and I didn't want to be rude by talking with food in my mouth.

"Well, bless your soul. You'd get along good with our neighbors. We try to lend a hand...like to Charles next door... He lost his wife and...things have been hard on him and his son...He would just get lost in Seattle. But we're all taking care of him here..." Claire said to us. "How old is his son?" Daniel asked her. "I think he's your age!" She replied. "Ooh, cool!" Daniel said.

After we finished our breakfast, Sean begins to collect our utensils and stack the plates. Daniel looks at Claire for a moment, then starts using his powers to stack the plates. Sean and I look on in awe as Daniel stacks the plates with his powers, then softly sets them on the counter. Then Claire walks over to the table and begins to laugh. "And I thought Stephen was a fast eater!" She said as she reaches out and grabs the stacked plates from Sean.

"Hey, Grandma? I wanted to ask you something...about that locked room upstairs..." Daniel asked and Sean gives a hard look towards him. "I told you there is nothing to see in it, Daniel..." Claire said. "Why were you in it this morning, then?" Daniel asked her. "Because there's a lot of old junk in there, and...Besides, it's not safe for you to explore, okay?" She said. "But we'll be fine --" Daniel started to say until Claire turns away, wordlessly, then puts the dishes into the sink.

"Why don't you go explore outside? You sure look like you're getting better. Get some fresh air!" She said to him. "I'll wait for Sean and (y/n)! And then we'll go! We won't be loud! Promise!" said Daniel and Claire smiles. "But be careful nobody sees you. Stay in the back, okay?" She said.

Sean and I turn to look as Daniel leaves, then Sean leans onto the counter. "Maybe you should tell him that it was Karen's room..." he said to her. "It's just a room now, Sean... Nothing to see..." she dismissed. "Daniel needs that...He doesn't know anything about her..." Sean said. "I know, poor thing...but his Mother isn't in there anymore...So nobody goes in the room, okay? I'm serious..." She said as she looks at us. "It's cool, I don't care... she left us anyway..." Sean replied, shrugging. "Yes, Sean...She left all of us..." she sighs.

"Anyway...You have to respect my rules under my roof, okay?" She said to us. "Of course..." Sean replied. "Always." I said, nodding. "I appreciate that, you...Now, you better go find Daniel..." she tells us and she starts walking out of the kitchen towards the living room. "There's a shed with some old toys outside...I'll...bet Stephen has the key." She said and we smile. "Daniel will freak...Thank you..." said Sean and Claire takes a seat on her recliner, while Sean and I get up from the table and start walking around.

"Sorry for getting upset, Sean, I...I just don't feel comfortable talking about all this." She said. "It's...It's fine, really. We don't have to." He replied and he starts to straighten up the living room while I went into the dining room to see Daniel sitting at the table and try to do his homework.

"This sucks...Mmmmmm...Is it...? Shoot, I don't know...I'm done..." he grumbles as I walk over to him. "Hey, Mister Pout. What's going on?" I asked him. "Why do I have to do homework when I'm not even in school?" He asked, annoyed. "I know it sucks, but...you still have to learn things. Or...you'll become dumb." I tell him as I pat his shoulder. "Okay...But...these problems are stupid." He said. "I know, munchkin. I've been there and so has your brother. Just...do your best." I said then I sit next to him. "Would you like some help?" I asked him. "Yes, please!" He exclaims with a smile and I chuckle. "Alright, alright." I said then I began to help out with his homework.

*Sean's POV*

After cleaning up after Daniel, I started heading towards Stephen's little study but I stop once I hear (y/n) and Daniel talking. I walk over to the doorway of the dining room and smiled when I see (y/n) helping Daniel with his homework.

I'm so glad she stuck around. She's pretty cool, smart and funny...and she loves Daniel. Daniel seems to love her. In some ways, she reminds me of Lyla. But...there's something about her that makes me...happy. The happiest I've ever felt in a long time.
I watch them work on the problems for a few moments before I turn around and met up with Stephen. I open the door to his study. "Mmmmm, think I need a handy assistant...Can you hand me the glue? In the cupboard, behind me..." he asked as he turns to face me.

I go up to the cupboard and start to open one of its doors. But as I do this, the cupboard starts to fall over, and Stephen rushes over to stop it. "Woah!" I exclaimed in fear. "Uh, careful! Sorry, I-I forgot...That thing isn't too stable, let me just..." Stephen said. "Okay... sorry..." I said, apologetically. "My fault...Your grandmother keeps telling me, but...I'm a lazy old man..." he said as he goes to sit down in his chair. "Hey, can you close the door? I want to talk for a second..." he said. "Oh..." I muttered and go to shut the door then take the seat across from him.

"Ah! It's the power cable, of course. It happens all the time..." he said as he looks over the toy train. Then he looks up at me.
"So, listen, I've...noticed things. With Daniel. You know what I'm talking about, don't you?" He said and I gulp at this. He's already suspicious, I think I have to tell him. I thought then I sigh. "Yeah. I do..." I replied.
"But...How the heck is that possible? I mean, he can...Well, you know more than me..." he said, shocked. "Not really....It started in Seattle after...everything happened. I wish I could explain, but...that's how it is now... and we have to live with it." I replied. Stephen takes a moment, before he continues.

"I-I really don't know what to think...He needs a doctor...Or...something." he said. "Then I'd probably never see him again..." I said, sadly. "Yeah, I get it...He needs you, more than anything else. By the way, let's keep this between us...Claire has a lot of strong beliefs...She...wouldn't understand...She adores Daniel, and just wants both of you to be safe and happy." He said and I nod.

"What I'm trying to say is...Maybe you should stay here with us...I know you three plan to run to Mexico but..." Stephen stammers before I answer him. "We have a home in Puerto Lobos. Dad wanted to return there...Two Mexican boys and a (skin color) girl out on the run? That won't be a secret in Beaver Creek for long." I said.

"America is your home...with us. And you have to think about your brother, his future...all that stuff..." Stephen said. "It's too dangerous for us to stay here. And for you guys, too..." I informed him. "It's dangerous to be on the road. Do you think your father would've wanted this for his kids?" He asked me. "Of course not...but everything's different now..." I replied.

"I know, I know...Well, just think about it. But...don't torture yourself." He said to me.
"I won't." I said. "Changing subject....I was wondering...i-is there something going on between you and (y/n)?" He asked and I stare at him. "W-what do you mean?" I asked, nervously. "Well...it's just...you two seem alittle close. I've notice the way you look at each her. It reminds me of the way I look at Claire." Stephen said and I smiled to myself but I look up at him and said. "She's cool and....I like her but....I don't know...." I shrug at this as I look away then back towards Stephen. "...Hey, uh...Claire said you had the keys for the tool shed..." I said, changing the subject, and he smiles.
"Oh, sure..." Stephen said as he reaches over the desk and grabs the key, then hands it to me. "Here. You guys enjoy the sun!" He said as I get up from the desk and push my chair back in.

"And be careful with that shed, it's probably a mess inside." He warns and I smirk. "Thanks!" I said as I get up from my chair and walk out of the room.

"Oh, there you are, Sean! Got the key?" Claire said once I walk out of the study. I nod at her and showed the key to her. "Hey, I have to go out and run some errands...Can you do me a big favor? Do you know how to work a washing machine?" She asked.
"Since I was about 8..." I replied. "Of course...Can you throw in yours and your brother's clothes after the next load? They're in the bathroom basket. (Y/n)'s already washed her clothes and hers is in the dryer." She said. "Totally, yeah...No problem." I said, nodding at her. "Thank you so much...Feel free to keep on tidying your stuff, too, it's good for the health to keep a house clean." She said.

"Definitely. Daniel and (y/n) can help." I said and she smiles. "Oh, and remember, for your own safety, no phone and no Internet. I know, I know, boring rules..." she said. "Don't worry, Claire." I assured her and she exits through the front door.

"Hey, Daniel! There's work for you!" I called out. "Uh, no! I'm busy!" Daniel called out from upstairs. "Busy my ass! Come over here! And where's (y/n)?" I asked and that's when I hear Daniel and (y/n) laughing. "You gotta find us first!" Daniel shouts and I let out an exasperated sigh. "Jeez..." I grumble and head up the stairs just as I hear our bedroom door creak. I walk over there but there was nothing.

I walk over to the bathroom and I happen to see Daniel behind the bathroom door, just by looking through the crack. I smile as I act casual walking to thr bathroom until I grab the doorknob of the door. "I know you're in there..." I said then I pull back the door, revealing Daniel. "GOTCHA!" I shout, making him jump. "Come on, get your butt out!" I said. "Okay, okay..." Daniel said, defeated.

"Now where's (y/n)?" I asked him and I could tell he was looking over my shoulder. But before I could react, I heard a voice say. "Right here!" And someone grabbed my shoulder. I jumped back and turn around to see (y/n) was the one behind me. She and Daniel started laughing at my reaction and I go ahead and play it off. "Haha, very funny." I said.

"You should've seen your face!" Daniel said, pointing at me, as they continue to laugh. "Alright, alright. Okay, guys, no more hiding, seriously!" I said. "Okay, okay. What do I have to do?" Daniel asked me "You tidy the mess in our room, and I take care of the laundry. Cool?" I said and Daniel nods. "Okay! Easy peasy!" He said and he heads to our room.

"Sorry, Sean. He finished his homework and I thought he deserved a little break." (Y/n) said. "It's fine. At least he's having fun." I said to her. "Yeah, plus it was pretty funny to see you get scared." She said, her eyes glinting with glee and mischief. "Yeah, I'll get you back." I said and she smirks. "Is that a challenge, Diaz?" She asked me and I smile back at her as I chuckle a bit. "Could be." I said, winking, at her and her smile gets bigger.

Then she walks closer to me and said, softly. "I love to see you try." My heart began to race as we stare into each other's eyes when we start to lean towards each other. But we stop as we look at each other then she backs away, slowly. "I, uh...I need to get...my clothes...out of the dryer..." she said with an embarrassed smirk then she looks up at me for a moment then walks out of the bathroom, I watch after her as my heart slows down. Then I go to the hamper and pick up mine and Daniel's dirty clothes.

*(y/n)'s POV*

I walk down the stairs and go into the laundry room before I stop and place my hand over my heart, trying to calm down my heart. What'd just happen? I thought as I take some deep breath. Was I....shit....did I almost...? I thought then I shake my head at this as I go over to the dryer and get my clothes. Then I go over to the table and start to fold my clothes as Sean walks in and heads towards the laundry room. He and I exchange a look as we walks past and my face turns red as I I turn my gaze away from him but I give a small smile to him.

"Okay, time to burn off some calories, what do you guys say?" Sean asked Daniel and I as we run over to the back door. Daniel sits down and puts on his boots and exclaimed. "Yes!" All of us put on coats and boots then Sean opens the backdoor and we go outside.

"Aawwww! Man, finally!" Daniel exclaims. "Feels so good to be outside." I sad as we walk out onto the snowy yard. "Reminds me of the cabin." Daniel said then he leans back and howls. "Aowwwwwww!"

Sean and I smile and laugh and both of us start to howl as well. "Owwoooooo!" Daniel looks over at us and smiles. "Watch out for the pack!" He said as we walk up to the shed. Sean takes out the key to the shed and tries to unlock the door. "Get ready for Storage Wars..." Sean said and he starts to struggle with putting the key in the lock. "What's wrong?" I asked him. "Frozen shut! Of course..." he grumbles as he continues to struggle.

"Guys, look!" Daniel said and we turn to see, in the neighbor's backyard, we see a boy, about Daniel's age, running towards the treehouse and climbs up the steps. One of the steps breaks and the kid starts to fall, but Daniel quickly extends his hand and uses his powers to stop him from hitting the ground. Sean pushes Daniel's arm down and the boy gently lands on the ground.

Sean and I glare at Daniel for a moment, then we look over to see the boy examining his hands. Daniel walks closer to the fence and waves, and Sean and I follow, also waving. The boy waves back.
"Hmmm...uh...Did you see that?" He asked us as we walk closer to the fence. "Yeah...We did..." Sean replied. "It looks like you're okay, though..." I said.

"You were almost floating!" Daniel exclaims. "I-I was...I was! I could feel myself in the air...It-it was awesome..." the boy said, smiling. "That's an awesome costume..." Daniel said, pointing at the boy's costume. "Who's your favorite superhero? I love..." Daniel started to say then both boys said, in unison. "Power Bear!"

"Oh man, I have the Mega Power Bear! You should check it out!" said the boy. "So cool! I've got the chibi Power Bear, the talking one!" Daniel said, excitedly. "NO ONE CAN DEFEAT JUSTICE!" The two boys shout then they share a laugh. "Looks like someone's making a new friend." I whispered to Sean as a man, obviously the boy's father, runs over to him, bending down and putting his hands on his shoulders.

"Chris, oh God...Look, I am so sorry, are you okay?" He asked in a panic and then they hug. "Dad, I'm fine! I promise!" Chris said. "Are you sure? Listen, I shouldn't have..." his dad started to say until he  looks over and notices us. He stands up and puts his arm around Chris, protectively.

"Do you know them?" He asked his son. "It's-it's okay, Dad, they're cool! He loves superheroes! Even Power Bear!" Chris said and Daniel smiles. "Ahh...gotcha...Hey, there...Are you staying with the Reynolds?" His dad asked us. "Uh, yeah...But not for long. We're just passing by." Sean replied.

"I see..." Chris's dad said then he looks down at his son. "Oh jeez, Chris...you don't have any damn shoes on. I'm sorry, buddy, let's get you inside..." he said. "I, uh...Yeah, okay Dad..." Chris mutters as his dad looks over at us. "Thanks, guys...Oh, and...uh...if Claire asks, tell her everything is fine..." he said. "Sure...No problem." Sean assures. "Cool. See you around, then." His dad said and Chris climbs onto his back. "Thanks, guys...See you later..." Chris calls out. "Yes we will!" Daniel shouts and we wave as the man walks away, carrying Chris on his back.

Sean nudges Daniel. "Daniel! Did you forget everything about the rules already?" He asked him. "Sorry, Sean...Did you want me to let him fall? Really?" Daniel asked him. "No, you...You did the right thing. But listen...We can't let anybody know... We have to keep a low profile out here..." Sean warns him. "He's like my age...I bet you would have done the same exact thing if it was (y/n)...Don't be mad..." Daniel said and Sean and I exchange a look before he looks back at his brother.

"I'm not mad, dude. It's...It's over." Sean said and we start to turn around. "Remember that we're hiding out...So no training and no showing off your power...From now on, you stick with us all the time...Okay?" I said and I playfully push him then we start pushing each other as we walk towards the shed, laughing.
