Chapter 20: Hidden Scriptures

The next day, Sean, Karen and I were sit in her car, which was parked on a junction of Brandy Highway, overlooking Haven Point. "Sure he's gonna show up?" She asked us. "He better. He promised." Sean grumbles. "Well, if he doesn't find us... we'll find him." She said before she sighs. "I can't believe how much crap you guys have been through...Makes me wanna punch in the face each and every asshole that got in your way." She replied.

"Yeah... Good thing we got to meet amazing people, too." I said. "Life on the road is all about that. The sweet encounters." said Karen. "Hope we can see them again someday..." Sean said. "Oh, you will." She said and we sir there for a moment again before she speaks up.

"So, tell me about Daniel. What's he like?" She asked us.  "Well... he's definitely... special." Sean replied. "Hope so. He's your brother, right?" She said just as a car comes into view in the distance. "Heads up." I said and all of us stare at the car. "Is that him?" Karen asked. "Yep. Wait here." Sean said as he and I get out of her car and Jake's car drives up to us then stops and parks.

Jacob, who's clean shaven now, emerges from his own car and his passenger walks out of the car as he exclaims. "Sean! (Y/n)!" He exclaims. "What happened?" He asked us, referring to Sean's eye. "Jake... (y/n) and I are not mad. But you better explain everything." Sean said to Jake, firmly. "I didn't know where else to go..." Jake replied as he looks down, shyly, then looks back at us.

"Listen, I...I saw Daniel come back to the camp that night... like he was in shock or something... Then I heard all these sirens, and... I got scared... I just-- I packed a few things, I-- I took a blanket from your tent, and we-- we left together. I also kept the cash you guys made on the farm. Uh, it's in my car." He said as he gestures towards his car.

"You did right, Jake... Thank you." I said to him. "She's right...thank you." Sean said and Jake smiles and nods at this. "You guys have no idea what he looked like when I found him that night...He was in bad shape, with a gunshot wound... and all by himself. I... I-- I couldn't just leave him there." Jake admitted. "It's okay, Jake." I said, calmly.

"What about the others? Hannah, Penny, Cassidy... What happened to them?" Sean asked him. "They-- they ran over to Merrill's place when they found out Finn was gone... That was the last time I saw them. Then on our way out here, Daniel told me more of what happened that night. How scared he was...The blast... Daniel feels he's gotta redeem himself for what he did." Jake replied.

"We need to get to him, Jacob. He's not guilty of anything... we should've protected him better." Sean said and I take his hand in mine. "I shouldn't have been the asshole to say let's go along with it once we got there. Things might've been different, if we just told them no." I said but Sean slightly shakes his head at this before I look over at Jake.

"So you came back here after you escaped... but with a dazed little boy... and everybody was cool with that?" I asked him. "Trust me, it was not an easy thing for me to come back. And yeah, they took us in. That's what they do here... They take people in..." he replied. "Except they didn't want to take us in yesterday." I said, gesturing between me and Sean.

"I'm telling you guys to be careful with the Reverend Mother... She's waited her whole life for somebody like Daniel... The Reverend knows how to manipulate people... She's good at this. He wants to stay with her. Daniel has faith in the Reverend now." Jake said. "Yeah, not afraid of that Lisbeth of yours." Sean said, confidently. "Me either. We're getting Daniel out of here." I said just as I hear a car door shut. I turn around and see that Karen had exited her car and approaches us.

"Come on... There's no way they're gonna let you two take him away." Jake said. "Well, too bad. We're not gonna ask for their permission. You must be Jacob. I'm Karen. Hi." She said and Jake nods at her. "Okay. I don't know if you wanna do this... but I... I have an idea.. I think school must be over by now, but Lisbeth will stay at the church with Daniel for his... special classes... That'll give us time to sneak into the compound before we get to them." Jake informed. "I'll be on lookout... keep watch in case it all goes to shit. Sean, stay on the walkie." Karen said to him. "Sounds like a plan." Sean said as I nodded.

"One more thing... I, uh... we have to get my sister too... Sarah Lee." Jake said, nervously. "Really, Jacob? Come on, man... She's with your parents." Sean said, slightly annoyed. "I know. Please, listen, Sean... She's not safe here. She's sick. They believe in everything Lisbeth says. And she says she'll cure Sarah with prayers... I know you understand... right?" Jake asked. "Damn, Jake..." Sean mumbles as I place my hands on Sean's shoulders.

"We need his help, too, Sean..." I said to him. "She's right. We need as much help as we can get." Karen said and Sean looks between us then sighs.

"Okay, Jake... I'm listening..." he said. "Lisbeth knows what's wrong with Sarah Lee... We just-- we need to find her medical record. I think it's in her home office... Then, I'll go get Sarah Lee while you and (y/n) get Daniel. Okay?" Jake said as he looks between us. "Fine." Sean and I said in unison as Karen said. "Sure."

"I'm gonna trust you on this, Jacob. All good for you two?" Sean asked me and Karen. "Like I said, Sean. I'm with you til the end." I said, smiling. He smiles back at me as Karen asks. "What if Daniel won't go with you?"
"He will. I know him..." Sean replied then Sean Jacob and I get into Jacob's car while Karen goes back to her own, and we begin to drive off.

The boys and I exit out of Jake's car, which was just outside of Haven Point. Sean takes out his radio and begins to speak through it. "Karen?" He calls. "I'm in place, I can see the whole camp. Let me know if you need anything. You and (y/n) be careful." She replied. "Got it. Thanks." Sean said and he puts the radio away as we approach the fence.

"We gotta be careful now. If anything happens, let me do the talking, okay?" Jake said to us. "Yeah, of course." I said as Sean nods. "Let's get this over with." He said to him. "Okay, Lisbeth's house is right behind the church... so in and out..." Jake said as we come up to the church. "Okay. And you're sure Lisbeth will have those files on your sister?" Sean asked him.

Before Jake could reply, Karen's voice comes through the radio. "Watch out, Sean... there are people right outside!" She said and Sean pulls up the radio. "Aw, shit... How many?" He asked. "Just three. A man with his kid on one side, and a woman alone on the other." She replied. "Got it. Thanks..." Sean said and he pockets the radio once again. "People aren't supposed to come and go around the church once the service is over. Better to avoid them, if we can." Jake said and we walk over to the side and kinda stick to the side, against the fence, just to avoid the people as much as we could.

"So... did you grow up outta here?" I asked Jake as we were able to avoid the woman, who was just sitting in a chair outside of her home I presume. "No. In another community back east... When Lisbeth came out here to start Haven Point... my folks followed her and brought me along..." He replied.

"Must have been hard on you..." Sean said. "Kinda... 8 year olds don't want to go to church all day..." Jake said as we go around a building then walk down a small mound then come up to a bland looking building.

"Okay, there it is... looks empty." Jake said as we come up to the front door. "Let's hope so." Sean said. "Luckily for us, we never close our door. A closed door is a closed heart, she says." Jake said and he goes and opens the door, with ease.

"We did it!" Jake said as we enter the building. "That was easy." I said as I look around and see there was a living room on the left and the kitchen on our right. "Now we have a little bit more time..." Jake said. "Yes, we do. Nice work. So where are the files?" Sean asked. "Right there in her office!" Jake said as he points at the door in front of us. I walk up to the door and grab the doorknob but it didn't budge. "Of course, it's locked." I said and Jake sighs.

"Her open doors speech is just another lie. We gotta find a way in!" Jake said and I sigh. "I wish I still had my bobby-pin, would've been able to lock pick this door, easily." I said. "Fuck! Think there's a key somewhere?" Sean asked. "Maybe, she's... too cautious not to have a spare set around..." Jake said, shrugging, and we look around the building.

"Whoah..." Jake whispers and I look over at him. "Are you okay, Jake?" I asked him. "Yeah, yeah, no, it... it's just so... full of memories and stuff." He replied as he looks around and I head towards the back and enter her bedroom.

We look around the room for awhile until I pull out a drawer and saw a letter. Curious, I picked it up and saw that it was a letter to Jake from Karen. The letter was basically Karen replying to Jake. So Lisbeth knew Karen was coming and hid it from Daniel.

"That bitch." I muttered. "What?" Sean asked me and I handed him the letter. "She took Karen's letter and hid it from Daniel." I said as Sean reads the letter, anger washing over his face. "Figures she would be hiding it. The sooner we get him out of here, the better." He said as he puts the letter back then pulls out another drawer and saw a key. "I think I got it." He said as he takes the key and we head out of the room and back to the locked door.

Sean takes out the key and inserts it into the door, unlocking it. "Yes! That's the one!" He said as I smile. "Perfect." He said as we entered the room and see a desk and some cabinets.

"Whoah, is this her personal archive or something?" I asked Jake. "Yeah, she keeps track of everything in here. Stuff about my sister must be in this one!" Jake said as we walk up to the cabinet, pull out the drawer and look through the files.

"Okay, I've got something! Must be what you're looking for." Sean said as he pulls out a file and hands it to Jake. Jake takes it and sets it on the desk and reads it. "Damn... she has pneumonia..." he said, a hint of fear and worry in his voice. "Oh my God!" I whispered as Jake stares at the file in anger. "And from what I get, Lisbeth knows damn well she needs medical treatment..." He said as he slaps the desk. "That's criminal, she's insane..." Sean said as I look through a draw and saw a file with Jake's name on it.

"Look! She has a file on you, too..." I said as I pulled the file out. "You guys can take a peek, and see how she really treats her flock..." Jake said as he turns to face us and I read the file, Sean looks at it over my shoulder.

"Man, what's all this... Were you, like, sick?" Sean asked but Jake shakes his head while I continue to read the file. "Conversion therapy..." I said, confused, then I look up at Jake. "Did they... wanted to cure you from... being..." I said and he sighs. "Pretty much... I always showed more interest in boys than girls... They thought I was a freak. A sinner." He said.

"Is that why you... ran away?" Sean asked him. "Yep, took me five years to understand what was up... I was too scared... confused...I really did believe I was a sinner... so I thought I had to atone for my sins..." He replied and this made me alittle angry. "Atone? For what sins? I don't get how they can preach this kind of crap. I mean, you've met Finn and everyone, are they sinners, then?" I asked him. "Of course not. I-I just didn't know different, (y/n). I believed them." He replied, sadly.

"Damn, Jake..." Sean said as I give Jake a sympathetic look. "I'm so sorry, Jake." I said. "After a few years... I was in a really bad place... I-I tried to hurt myself. Lisbeth was very upset. We had a long chat... She told me I should leave, go see the world and figure things out. I-I don't really get her, Sean... but Lisbeth does believe in all this stuff..." he said.

"I had no clue about our life here... I'm... I'm sorry, Jake." Sean said and I nod in agreement. "Same here." I said. "I'm sorry I brought Daniel here... I was just so blown away when I saw what he could do... it was like a real miracle... I-I thought I... I had found my faith again... instead I... I just hurt him..." Jake said as he looks down.

"Then let's make things right... We just have to get Daniel out of here." Sean said to him and Jake looks up at us and smiles. "I hope so.. And I'll get my sister to a hospital, have her treated... I hope they'll help her." He said and I frown then a thought came into my mind.

"Keep my money for your sister. She needs it." I said and Jake looks at me in shock. "Same here. Keep mine and Daniel's money as well." Sean said. "Oh, I-I can't do that, guys, that-that's a lot of..." Jake stammers in between tears. "We're okay. It will cover her medical bills." Sean assured him. "She needs that money more than us." I said to him. "Wow. Thank you, guys..." Jake said with relief and a smile on his lips.

"Sean? Are you there?" Karen's voice said over the radio and Sean picks it up. "What's up?" He asked. "You got company! That thug who works for Lisbeth. He's just holding some files... Doesn't seem to be onto you." She replied just as Jake runs to the door and shuts it.

"This guy is dangerous, guys. Trust me." Jake informed us.

"Hey, I have a good plan to get him out of your way. It'll give you more time. Just give me the word..." Karen said and Sean looks over at me and I shrug and said. "Whatever it takes." Sean nods at me then goes back to the radio. "Yeah! See what you can do!" He said. "I will. Get ready..." She said and Sean puts the radio away.

"Guy, we gotta hide! Now!" he said and I go over to the door and lock it while Sean puts away the files and shuts the cabinets. I look around and see the closet then I run over to it and open it. "Looks big enough for two people." I whispered to Sean. He nods and we enter the closet together and shut it while Jake hides behind the door.

We stood there in silence for a few good seconds before I hear the main building door open, then footsteps. Then I hear the guy put the key into the doorknob, unlocks it and opens it.

"All right, let's see..." The guy said as he goes over to the cabinet and looks through it. I take Sean's hand in mine and watched as the guy shuts the cabinets and he starts to walk towards the closet. Oh no, no, no, no, no! I thought, frantically, as my heart started to beat faster. I squeeze Sean's hand as the guy gets right in front of the door.

But before he could open it, screams started emerging from outside. "Huh? What? What the fuck is going on?" The guy asked and he exits the room. I let out a sigh of relief and look over at Sean. "That was close." I whispered to Sean and he nods as Jake comes out of his hiding spot.

"Guys, do you think..." he said as Sean and I get out of the closet. "It's gotta be Karen." Sean said as Jake looks out of the door. "He's gone! Let's get outta here!" He said and we start to walk out of the room and head to the main door. "Man, that was crazy! I really thought he was going to catch us!" He said.

"The guy is leaving! Looks my diversion worked out." Karen said over the radio. "Yeah, nice job." Sean said after he picks up the radio. "Okay, we shouldn't be here. Are you guys ready?" Jake asked us as Sean puts the radio away. "Yeah, let's go." I said.

We exit the house and look up to see a burning building in the distance. "Look at that... Your mom is hardcore, Sean." Jake said. "Yeah, I guess she is... So we're all good now." Sean said as he looks over at Jake. "I'll go get Sarah Lee while you two get Daniel. Then let's meet up at the car, okay?" He said. "All right. You be careful, okay?" I said as Sean nods. "You too. Good luck..." Jake said and he starts to leave while Sean pulls out his radio.

"Come in, Karen... See anything?" He asked her. "Nope. You're all clear." She replied. "Awesome. Talk later." Sean said then he puts the radio away the looks over at me. "You ready?" He asked. "Of course." I said then I lean up and kiss him, lightly, on the lips. Once I pull back, we smile ar each other and he takes my hand in his and we start to make our way back to the church.

"Mission accomplished?" Karen asked us as she meets us at the front of the church. "Yep. Now the hard part..." Sean said. "Did you find what Jacob needed?" She asked us. "And a whole lot more..." I added.

Before we enter the church, Karen places her hand on Sean shoulder. "So you know what you're gonna do?" She asked. "Nope... but let's do it." He said and I nodded then we head towards the front doors of the church.
