Helpless

Adrien was reeling from his now most cherished memories with Luka and (Y/N), having barely slept at all due to his mind trying to wrap his mind around everything that had happened while Luka slept cuddled into his chest with (Y/N) spooning him. He couldn't stop himself from admiring his partners as they both slept- people just look so different when their guards are one-hundred-percent down. They look infinite- like they could be anyone or do anything when those eyes open again. He didn't even need to look outside to see that the sun was beginning to rise, all he had to do was watch the sun dance across the face of Luka as he giggled sleepily about his dream- he just had to watch the sun wrap around (Y/N) like a blanket.

He heard Luka's breathing shift, a sharp inhale as his eyes finally said hello to the world again. He grinned when he saw Adrien, leaning up for a kiss which the blond happily returned. "Good morning, love," Luka whispered, kissing him again. "Did you sleep at all or did you just stare at (Y/N) and me all night?"

Adrien's face turned what seemed a million shades of red, earning a dreamy laugh from his boyfriend "A little bit of both?"

Luka sat up a little, cautiously as he tried not to wake (Y/N) "A little more than one, though?" he asked, his eyebrows raised with a beautifully unrestrained smile on his lips.

"I guess you'll never know," Adrien laughed softly, pulling Luka into him for another kiss "I love you,"

"I love you too," Luka breathed, his hand finding Adrien's "want me to get started on breakfast? I'm sure Rose and Juleka are starving by now."

Adrien nodded, "I'm sure (Y/N) will be happy to have food ready when they wake up."

Luka slowly climbed out of bed, giving Adrien one last kiss and kissing the top of (Y/N)'s head before making his way down the ladder. Adrien had (Y/N) all to himself, and he pulled (Y/N) close to him while he scrolled on his phone, one hand playing with (Y/N)'s hair with one hand and scrolling with the other.

He nearly jumped out of his skin when his phone rang, he didn't recognize the number but he was in such a panic to keep his ringtone from waking his angel that he answered without hesitation. "Hello?"

"Good morning, I'm looking for Adrien Agreste?" it sounded like a woman, maybe someone using a voice changer? Was it another stalker trying to get his number? God, he'd have to change his number again.

Adrien swallowed stiffly, trying to stay relaxed as he let out a shaky "speaking,"

"My name is Julia Garnier, I'm calling because of your father- I'm in charge of his prosecution on behalf of the state- and I was calling because I noticed your father's lawyers didn't put you on their list of witnesses? Are you involved in his case at all? Did you want to testify?"

Adrien felt his blood run cold. His father? Testify? His father's lawyers had contacted him almost immediately after his father was taken into custody asking to testify for them, but he said he needed time to think. Now prosecution wanted him? "Well," Adrien cleared his throat as he sat up, his fist gripping the phone as he tried to focus, "They asked me but I said I needed time to think about it- is it okay if I get back to you?"

"Of course! I understand this being such a high-profile case and just- the emotional strain on you- take your time, just call me back at this number when you make your decision."

Adrien nodded as if the woman would know he was nodding, "Alright, thank you. Good luck either way. Off the record, my dad was horrible he should get life in prison whether I'm involved in the trial or not."

"That's the goal," the woman laughed "I have other calls to make but thank you so much for your time."

"my pleasure, Goodbye." Adrien hung up and stared at his phone. He knew before he made any decision he had to do something first- he had to see his dad.

Luka looked over Adrien frantically in the parking lot, (Y/N) standing off to the side just looking nervously back and forth from the prison and their partners. "Are you absolutely sure you want to do this?" Luka asked, his eyes wide with concern as his hands fiddled with the collar of Adrien's shirt "I mean- you don't have to see him if you really don't want to."

"I have to see him, Luka," Adrien whispered "Just- trust me, please?"

Luka bit his lip, looking desperately at (Y/N) for help while they just hugged Adrien from behind. (Y/N) kissed Adrien's cheek with a sad smile "We'll be here when you're done no matter how it goes, just be careful."

Adrien nodded, his hand moving to run his fingers over (Y/N)'s hands, "I love you,"

"I love you too, now go give him hell." (Y/N) grinned, patting his hand as he pulled away. Luka and (Y/N) didn't get back in the car until Adrien was inside the building.

Thirty minutes. The staff made Adrien wait thirty minutes to go in and see his own father- not that he was complaining because it took fifteen of those minutes to stop shaking as he waited in the room for his father. It looked more like an interrogation room than what he expected, considering his father was in a rich-people prison.

Adrien's posture snapped to perfect when the door finally opened, his father was in his normal suit looking as if he hadn't been in prison. He actually looked more well-rested than usual, like this was a fucking vacation or something. He took his seat in front of Adrien, completely unbothered by the atmosphere of the room they were in. Adrien was shocked at how upset he was that his father didn't look roughed up at all.

Adrien stayed stuck in his thoughts, his father doing the same as they just sat there and stared at each other. Adrien never knew how much he didn't actually know what his father looked like until now. He never noticed the way the red in his tie looked a million different colors depending on how the light hit it. He never noticed the slight strands of brown in his otherwise silver hair. The more he looked at him the more he realized he didn't look a thing like him- he was thankful for that because that meant he was all his mother.

Gabriel cleared his throat, the noise enough to startle Adrien into visibly jumping in his seat. He rested his hands on the table, clearly trying to figure out what to say. To Adrien's surprise, Gabriel was the one who broke the silence.

"Did I ever tell you how your mother and I met?" he asked, his voice something close to earnest.

Adrien shrugged, trying to appear dismissive and aloof as he avoided eye contact with him "No, you must have been busy turning half the city into villains instead of spending time with your kid."

"Well," the man did the one thing Adrien wanted the most his entire life- he smiled at his son. Adrien regretted making eye contact. He was a fool to hope for his father's love even now. "We were about your age," his voice was soft like he was telling his son a story he told all the time to keep his wife's memory alive. It made Adrien nauseous. "and your mother- well, she was the kindest, most beautiful woman I had ever met. People didn't like me much-"

"Shocker," Adrien scoffed, his arms crossed as he looked at his father with a bored expression. Secretly he was devastated, the one time his father talked about his mother was when he was trying to win him to his side. The reality hit that much of his mother's life would probably be a mystery to him.

Gabriel paused, and Adrien could see that his father was attempting to hide his surprise at his son's attitude. He took a deep breath, opened his eyes, and continued his story "People didn't like me much and I often found myself digging for my designs in the garbage. One day, your mother saw me doing this after lunch and she helped me get them even though someone threw their chewed-up food all over them- manicure is damned- and she helped me every day since." Gabriel's face broke out into another smile, at the memory of his wife. "You should have seen the way she chased those boys away from me, Adrien- she was a guardian angel I didn't know I needed. Eventually, she asked me out and lord knows why she wanted me- but we got married years later and had you." he stopped again, his eyes dancing around as he looked at everything but Adrien. His eyes brimmed with tears as if remembering everything was the most painful thing he ever had to do. "I-" his lips pressed into a firm line as he considered his next words. "Everything I did- it was for us. I just wanted my family back."

The word family made Adrien scoff, if his father really wanted a family he would have been there for his son. He would have heard him sobbing himself to sleep the months after his mother's death, he would have shown up to support him at the countless concerts he invited him to- He would have sat down and had fucking dinner with his kid. Adrien bit back tears as he stared into his father's eyes. "No, you didn't" his voice caught in his throat as he spoke, and he prayed his father didn't catch him faltering.

Gabriel stilled, frozen in his seat "Excuse me?"

"You still had a family. You had me- and I needed you and you weren't there. The only reason you don't have a family anymore is that you don't care about anyone but yourself." his voice was ice, but Adrien was fighting off the incoming panic attack more with every word he spoke. He never spoke to his father like this- he was never this honest. He felt exposed. He hated it. He felt weak- he resented the fact that at the end of the day, he was still a boy begging his dad to love him.

"Adrien, of course, I care about you- I love you."

"No," he stated as if caused him zero pain to admit that his father never loved him. "You love that when you deign to look in my direction that for a second you get a glimpse of my mother, who, for the record, would hate the monster you've become." Adrien stood up, shaking as he rested his hand on the door handle, refusing to look at his father's face, knowing one look at him would make him fold despise his decision being made, "see you in court, asshole."

Adrien left the room, hoping that for a second his father felt as cold and lonely in that room as he felt his entire life. He left the room in a daze, the staff member leading him out not saying a word to him as he almost floated through the prison, not snapping out of it until he felt the sun hit his face. His eyes fixed on the ground as he realized he truly had no family anymore. He had no more security. (Y/N) and Luka could leave him at any given moment, and he would be truly alone.

It wasn't until he felt Luka's arms holding him in a hug that he broke down in the middle of the parking lot. He couldn't breathe, he couldn't hear anything as Luka carried him to the car. Luka just sat with him, holding his hand and kissing his head as he sobbed into his boyfriend's shoulder. (Y/N) sat on the other side of Adrien, their hand on his knee rubbing small circles while he tried desperately to get air in his lungs again.

For the first time in his life, Adrien felt completely and utterly helpless.
