Dead man in a suit

Silence.

Neither of us moved, James and I were still by the door and the man in the suit was still morphed into the shadows cast by the black endless walls. I looked back at James and his faced said it all.

What had we gotten ourselves into?

"I'm sure by now you should be feeling very confused, angry and maybe frightened. But the main thing you need to know, is that i'm on your side." His voice was slow, like nails slowly scratching along a chork board. He spoke like he had our fate in his hands. And if he wanted to he could crush it whenever he liked.

"Are you? Because your not really giving that impression."

Something was different about this man, it was like he wasn't even there. I couldn't hear him breathing, or even his heart beat. Only his shoes and and the front of his suit stood out because of the light; which in some ways gave me reassurance. It was like talking to a ghost, a spirit, death.

"So are you gonna tell us your fake name now?" I said full of sarcasm. Knowing a superior with such importance, such as himself could not give up his identify.

"I like you Alex, your smart. But yes, my name is Devin Starkwood. I work for this very agency." He started.

"You see, the obsticals that you faced have been monitored by, not just me, but the big man himself. He is very interested in this specific age devision."

A thoughtful silence followed. The song "Feeling good by Nina Simone" playing softly in my ears to cover the background sounds.

"Why are you here?" James' smooth voice shook from beside me.

"I have a proposition for you both."

James scoffed "There is such thing as a phone you know, you could have dropped us a call."

I nudged him with my shoulder urging him to shut up.

"Why don't you take a seat James, your going to be here for quite some time." His voice turned then and almost revealed the real person he was. Just with that sentence I could tell that he was not normal. He spoke like he has been watching us. A stalker.

"I'd rather stand." James said with distaste paired with a straight face. He crossed his arms infront of him.

"Suit yourself. Now I will explain."

"We have a case that has arisen."
He reached behind him and revealed a pastel yellow coloured folder with red print saying CLASSIFIED. He threw it towards us and it slid across the floor to my feet. I picked it up immediately.

"About 6 months ago, 6 people in Devision 4 of our B team program had a mission to retrieve a laboratory item called 'Liquid X' of great importance located in 28.1000° N, 81.6000° W, Florida. The liquid had been taken from the volt of rhe main governmental labratory in New York, it was taken from us by the Russians. This spacific liquid was used for changing and splitting DNA strands in it's own solid form. It had the ability to almost change someone's personality. The agency created this to gain information out of terrorists we interrogated. A certain amount was injected into their arm and they would, in theory tell us the truth of the situation at hand."

"Unfortunately only on some spacific blood types Liquid X would work on. On the subjects it did work on they were physically fine, but others well open the book and you can figure it out."

I looked down and opened the folder. There was about 4 images of men in each seperate image in a room tied to a chair. The image almost made me throw up. There was blood pouring out their ears, eyes, mouth and nose. Some had their eye balls swelling and looking like they would burst out of their skull. Overall the images would be something I would not forget."

"So in 1997 the governement locked the Liquid X program down and locked it away in the volt never to be used again. Until 6 months ago when 6 of our finest agents went missing and Liquid X was gone."

James took the folder from me to get a closed look and sure enough there was analytical information on each person.

Jack Arreace- CHC (Computer Hacker Commissioner)

Zeck Brian- Field DEAD

Emily Casmain- Field DEAD

Dylan Darwin- Leader and
coordinator DEAD

Connor Edwards DEAD

Penelope Flynt DEAD

Mia George DEAD

"As you can see, they are no longer alive, well so we think."

"Okay, so what?! People die all the time on missions. What's so special about this one?" Stated James truthfully.

"Interesting you should ask. On the night of the attack, every team member was given a contact lense camera and a tracking device so we could gather information. Within 300 seconds of being in the building they were all taken out. After a thougher search of the building the next day we could not find the bodies of the agents anywhere. Due to the agency's protocol, if the agents aren't found within a 2 week period. They are clasified dead. However 4 weeks after the incident a security camera spotted an exact DNA match of Dylan Darwin, the leader of the mission in Florida. Except Darwin was no longer leading his team, he was leading a terrorist attack in a small town in Germany. The polatics and the media had a feild day. People started to ask questions, unwanted question. The government started to question our ways of teaching the younger generations."

He put his hands tovether infront of him making his well worked skin show his age in the light.

"This is where the both of you come in. The so called C.Y.F you thought was going to take place today was a fraud, it was simply a test to see what team would finish first to gain possession of this mission."

"Why do you need us? Why not get someone from the adult devision to sort this out. Why two 17 year olds?" Asked James, each word he said blew on my neck. That was annoying as heck.

"Good question." He chuckled.
"What's the word I'm looking for?" He trailed off.

"We're disposable." I finished softly for him.
It was the hard truth, we were kids, if we failed they would just order 2 more, 6 more 10 more. We were the pawns in this game.

"That's the word." He said, what sounded like a smile.

Silence.

"So what now? You just gave us some seriously classified information, and we just go home and have dinner." I asked.

"To answer your question, yes, you will go home and go about your... I suppose you could call it a "normal" life. Within the next 48 hours you will be given a message. That will instruct you of what to do next."

"Okay let's say I believe you, how are we supposed to know that your someone from an opposing team?" Asked James.

"I suppose there is no way I could prove this. But think about it, if I were on this so called terrest team why would I risk loosing my life going through one of the tightest security of one of the biggest governement controlled agency to get two 17 year olds." "If I was here to kill you, I would have done it by now." He amused us.

"Huh, point taken." James said and again he breathed on my neck. This was starting to really tick me off now.

"So what exactly do you want us to do?" I finally asked.

"The two of you will be put into an artificial team that the agency has put together. It will consist of three others. I cannot give you their exact bio right away, as the countrie we are working with does not want to expose that information. Your team will go to go Berlin, Germany and retreive 'Liquid X' before they do something with it that they don't understand."

James took a big breath in and I almost lost it.
"When do we-"

Turning around hard I finally yelled. "Will you stop breathing on my neck."

He looked down at me, "I'm not."

"Ah yes you are, my neck and I know what we felt." I folded my arms.

"I'm standing right beside you, I would know if i was doing that. I'm only talking. "

"Well that's the problem then isn't it. You need to shut up."

"Ah yes they warned me about this. Your constant rivalry." Said Devin.

I turned around.

"Devin your not envolved in this, back off."

"I'm very involoved in this. If you two can't shut up and work together, you could potentially kill the whole team on the field. So before I go, think about it. Your no longer responsible for yourselfs, but for three others now. Make a mistake and the whole team will suffer."

And just like that, his form started to flicker and then finally his fancy suit disappeared. He just a projector based reflection.

Silence.

"So what do you think?" James asked

I sighed, "I think he's telling us the truth." I nodded.

I looked over his face and he seemed casual on what had just happend.

"Yeah me too. There is a chance he couldn't be, but then who would go to such lengths to put us in game that we know nothing about." He said running his hands through his hair.

"Yeah." I breathed. I looked up at him and he looked down at me. And we jsut stared at each other. There we were in the middle of an underground agency, having no idea where we are. He had dust and blood all over his forehead, the bottom of his shirt was completely torn off and he was drenched in sweat. I can't image how I looked either.

I looked back up at him to see amusement in his eyes after he looked at me too. But despite all of this I laughed. And so did he. We laughed so hard because this was ridiculously stupid. I hadn't laughed, or smiled in so long that it hurt my face so much, but I kept laughjng because i couldn't help it. He leaned against the wall in fitts. while I held my stomach and looked like I was crying.

We fought a lot, actually thats all we did. But in this very moment, I feel like we understood at least one part of each other. Our lives we're different but at the same time so similar.

"But you know what's even more helarious?" James said getting up from his hands and knees.

"What?" I asked wiping my damp eyes and fringe aside.

"How the hell are we going to get out of here."

And just like that we broke down in complete fits of laughter again.
