Arguing in the Pipe

"Okay, got it. Lets go." I painfully pulled out the bullet with my blood soaked hands.

I look beside me to see James with a horrstrict expression on his face.

"That was by far the most destgusting process that I've seen for someone to remove a bullet. Did that even hurt?" We were both sitting on the ground now for about 2 minutes while I removed the bullet watching everything glitch around us.

"Yeah a little, it felt like a little bee sting." I sarcastically replied.

"How big was the bee that stung you?!"

"James?"

He turned to face me, "Yeah?"

"Shut up."

"Will do, my friend."

"I'm not your friend." I reminded him.

"You wound me." He replied in a bored voice. A silence settled apon us.

"Can I see it." It wasn't really a question, more like a statement.

I threw it up at him and he caught it with one hand. It was no bigger then his pinkie finger nail. The only way you could tell it was a tracking device was the small flashing light on the side. His large hands lifted it towards his face, his crystal blue eyes rapidly looking all over the surface of it. The small amount of blood coating his fingers.

"A.S.S. Interesting." He muttered. Before I could registered what was happening he threw it on the ground and with his foot he forecefully strepped on it with his heel. I could have missed it if I had blinked. It shattered as soon as it made contact with his foot, leaving it all over the floor in peices. It was no longer flashing.

"Looks like you were right McGregor, the agency was being tracked."

I'm always right, I thought.

My thoughts were distirbed with the sound of ripping. James had ripped a small fraction of the bottom of his shirt.

Behind us the chimney shimmered like it was going to dissappear for another time and then turned ridged again.

"We need to get out of here no- what are you doing?!"

James had ripped a small strip of his shirt and moved it towards my shoulder wound where he started to tie tightly to stop the blood flow. I pushed him off with my good arm before he could finish and gave him a glare that said so many words above PG13.

"We don't have time for this, we've been standing here for what... 3 minutes and have done nothing."

"Why are you getting so mad! I'm just trying to help. Do you want to bleed out. Your human!" He yelled back.

"Do you want to get punched in the face?" I yelled with my fist clenched. Memories arose when people called me names.

"Go ahead." He said and stepped forward right in front of me.

Then we just stood there glaring at each other. The fast beat of his heart pounding in my ears with my own.

"I didn't give you permission to touch me
or-" I stared.

But it seemed the chimney had other ideas. It couldn't hold any longer and shifted. The force of the movement toppled the whole top off. We both scrambled to our feet and slid across the tiles not wanting to eat bricks. As each brick fell and hit the ground it disappeared.

Okay think, think I need to get out if here. Think.

"Okay here's what we're going to do." Suddenly James said.
"First get off this bloody roof. Second, were going to run to that dent in the wall on the east quadrant near the post office. There's a slight tare in it and the matal has flicked off. If we rip it there should be an old pipe that used to be a paragram. We can climb our way back up and hopefully get up to the paragram room where we started."

When he was thinking he always kept his jaw locked and his eyes moved frantically everywhere in his surrounding as if he was calculating everything all at once.

I was going to object, but it wasn't such a bad plan.

"What if the assassins come back?"

He never missed a beat when answering back.

"Before we jump off the roof grab the gun laying on the van."

"What if the civilians brake out?"

"Shoot them."

"What if the roof dissappears?"

"Run faster."

"The plans not half bad." I shrugged.

"It's completely bullet proof, what's wrong with it." He said turning to face me. There was ash on his forehead and a small amount around his jaw and neck making it look more defined. His hair looked wild aswell as his eyes.

"Your still here." I said with a straight face.

"You know the only problem with it, is if your going to bleed out." He said stretching his arms over his head.

He did have a point. I shamefully agreed. As we were talking I became very aware of how many injuries I have. Shoulder wound that is still slightly out of it's socket, a twisted ankle, but most of all I just felt tired. None of these were worth stopping.

"I'll be fine."

"No you won't. At least put your shoulder back in. We're going to be climbing soon."

I rolled my eyes. I looked around and saw the second chimneys just meters away. I jogged up to it cringing slightly, knowing this was not going to be painless. Picking up the pace I ran into the chimney shoulder first.

"What are you.... Ohh Jesus Alex." James spoke.

The crack of the rotator cuff forcefully going back into place was both satasfing and gruesome. To say I felt better would be a lie, I felt worst. The urge to vomit was high.

"Look there's no need to show off okay." His expression was a mixture of disbelief and impressed.

I didn't respond, I just glared and then ran.

We jumped and ran in unison dodging park benches and shops until we reached the slight tare in the wall. James grasped the folded top with two hands and pulled it down forcefully successfully tareing it off. Wires and electric sparks flew and a dark void was replaced. We both looked up and he was right, it was an old paragram. The difference being that there was no live electric sparks flying to kill me, I was grateful for that. Old rusted steps were placed on the left side to climb up.

James reached in and wiped his hand over the side of the pipe, wiping off some dust.

P:0.6 Voldark

It was crossed out with a red line.

"This was the Paragram they shut down a couple of years ago." James spoke through the silence.

"It was the main one that took the politicians and the boss himself up to the office and meeting rooms."

"I remember that, do you know why?" I asked.

"Know one does." His voice echoed through the pipe, repeating over and over again.

Silence settled. I decided not to ask him how he found out abiut this to preserve time.

"Okay what now, you've got us here. Are we just supposed to climb until our arms give way and hope there's a way out."

"That's exactly what were going to do." He replied rolling up his sleeves.

I scoffed, "Your plans are stupid."

He turned to be with a smirk and an outstretched hand, "ladies first."

I scoffed and slapped his hand asside. With two feet I sat on the floor of the ground and reached with my feet and legs. I wasn't tall enough. I shuffled my butt just a little further and reached again. I still didn't make it. If I couod just reach a little further then...

I tried a third time but my concentration was spoiled with the sound of James laughing.

Very slowly I turned my head and sure enough he had his hand over his mouth trying, but failing, to muffle his laughter.

"I'm so-sorr-" He said almost wheezing.

"Don't, don't even start."

"I'm sorry it's just that your so shor-"

"James! Not everyone is gifted in the height department. Mention it again and I will take pleasure in throwing your ass into the abyss with no remorse."

Slowing down his laughter and smiling he says, "yes mam."

He moved me aside slightly and reached over and grabbed the bar with ease.

I got up and looked at him and his smile had not ceaced to perish.
"Show off." I muttered.
Reaching his hand out to me I grabbed it with caution.

"I'm not going to break your arm, so stop shooting daggers at me."

"I wish I had daggers." Then he lifted me up then dropped me down until I had my feet on the ladder steps. They creaked with my weight.

"I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that." He said.

We moved up and the echoes of our feet hitting the metal ladder bars making the most sound.

About four minutes past and the steps still looked never ending. With each passing minute James' pulse escalated.

"Would you move quicker." I complained right at his heals.

"Nope." He replied.

Silence.

"The lights getting stronger, can you see it?" Said James.

"No, I can't see past your fat ass." I said with a scowl.

Silence.

Minutes later he sighed "I'm bored."

"Do you want to play eye spy?"

I didn't answer. Does he know we're in a dark pipe with little to no light.

"Eye spy with my little eye, something beginning with 'D'."

"Dickhead." I said matter-a-factly

"Wrong! It was darkness. Okay your turn." He said with humour.

"You are an idiot."

"Your just jealous."

I ignored him.

I stopped briefly, reminding myself not to look down. With one hand on the ladder for balance I got my ipod out and changed the sound to "Dont look down" by Martin Garrix. The song was quiet fitting as I was one slip away from falling away from my death. The beat of these fast songs usually blocked out most of the unordinary sounds like heart beats and James laces hitting his shoes.

"Hey! Why did you stop?!"

I cringed a little at his voice.

"You don't have to yell." I said as I turned up the volume by 20.

"We have to keep going. What is with you and that ipod?"

"Wouldn't you like to know Colton."

"Fine then be like that." He turned round and started climbing.

"Like what, please enlighten me." I followed suit and started climbing suddenly interested.

He took some time to answer. "Your all quiet and mysterious. You have this look like your always in pain. You never sit still for more than 30 seconds and you always have something to say back."

"I didn't realise you were such a fan of me Colton." I said trying to acted bored of the conversation.

"You don't have to know someone to understand."

"And what exactly are you trying to understand?"

He took some time to answer.
"Your different."

A few beats of his pulse later i replied.
"I've been calles worse. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" I said quietly.

"I haven't decided yet."

That was the end of the conversation.

But his statement did make me think, I am different. But I didn't think that James would be the one to point out the facts to me first.

"Wait there's light ahead. It look like a vent. We're almost there." He yells.

"Keep moving." I suddenly became aware of how tired my arms had become.

When we reached the top, it wasn't really a vent, it was more like a big sewage drain top that you see on the street. Short slits of light streamed in and eliminated the sides of the pipe. James pushed his fingers threw the slot and twisted. Moving it aside he lifted his self up. I followed the same and wiped my hands on my thighs. I was so uncomfortable, my hair was sticking to my face and this suit is not helping me at all.

I looked at James and his face was slightly flushed. His neck, arms and face was shining with sweat. I'd never seen him ao un-tindy, it almost made him look better.

But that was not important. The room that we were in was not the paragram room. We were surrounded by four walls of the exact same dimentions. It made me feel like I was in a box. In front was a metal door was a handle.

In unison we both walked up to it. I reached forward and twisted the handle. The door didn't make a sound when I pushed it open. James was right behind my shoulder. We peered in together and saw somthing I did not anticipate.

The room was pitch black, the main source of light coming from the door we just opened, it created a rectangular light shape on the floor.

On the far end of the room was 10 small tv's dimly lit. They showed the other competitors in the competition. They were in paires just like us. Some were fighting the assassins, others were wandering around looking for a way out. But they looked so wounded. One girl couldn't even walk. Another had 2 gun shots in her arms.

"Congratulations." Said a voice that chilled my body and instantly made me cold. The voice sounded full of power and authority. It came from the darkness. Tapping of expensive shoes echoed the room.

A man in a suit stepped foward and into the light, but only stepped forward enough to see his body. His head was still engulfed in the shadows.

"You are the first two competitors to complete the challenge."
