back in business

Sadly, the BAU's vacation was coming to an end. As much as I loved the time off, I was starting to get a little antsy. I just wanted to get back in the field and solve some crimes.

Spencer was currently in a meeting awaiting on a decision for his reinstatement. I was in one of the empty offices down the hall, waiting to hear from him. I hoped it was good news. This job has been an important part in Spencer's life for the last 13 years. I hoped that the actions of a psychopath didn't take that away from him.

He walked in a while later, his face expressionless. I jumped out of my chair at the sight of him. "What'd they say?"

He pulled something out of his coat pocket and smiled as he showed off his new badge.

"Oh my god!" I jumped into his arms in excitement. He lifted me off my feet and spun me around. When he set me down, I pulled him in for a kiss. We broke apart and my hands went up to cup his face.

"I'm proud of you."

He smiled, but I could tell something was off. "There's a stipulation to my reinstatement."

I started to worry, my hand trailing down to grab his.

"For every hundred days in the field, I have to take 30 days off."

Before we had Delilah, Spencer would always get antsy and frustrated when we had time off. His mind always moves at a mile a minute and if he sits for too long, it drives him crazy. I just hoped that there would be a way for me to prevent that.

"Well, look on the bright side. You've got the job back and I know a certain 6 year old who would love having you home for long periods of time."

He chuckled as he rubbed his thumb across my knuckles. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

"C'mon, let's head to the office. I'm excited to work with you again."

I practically dragged him down to the bullpen and stopped right in front of our desks. He looked happy to be back, his eyes scanning over the pictures and books lined up across the desk.

An alert on our phones pulled us out of our moment. It was a case.

"I'm gonna go drop something off to Emily, I'll meet you at the round table."

I walked up the steps to see Emily, Tara, and Matt all in the middle of a conversation.

"Here's that paperwork."

"Now I'm willing to bet good money on the fact that the Reid household had a lovely break," Tara spoke up.

"How's everything going?" Emily asked.

"We're doing good. There were some struggles, but we're together and we're happy."

"That's good. Let's go take on this new case."

We met up with the rest of the team in the conference room. I immediately made my way over to Spencer and wrapped my arm around his.

We started talking about the case, some poor girls getting stuffed into suitcases after being murdered. Before we headed to the plane, I stopped Spencer.

"I apologize if I seem to hover on this case. I just want to make sure you're okay. So if I'm being annoying, just tell me."

He set his go-bag down on his desk and wrapped his arms around my waist, mine automatically going around his neck.

"You don't annoy me. And I appreciate you looking after me. Now let's go work our magic."

I nodded and we made our way to the jet. Our teammates have always joked that when the both of us are on a case, unsubs beware. I just hope that these last few months haven't caused us to lose our touch.

Once we landed in Florida, Luke and I went to the latest disposal site. We didn't find much to help our investigation, meaning this was gonna be a tough one. On our way back to the station, Luke started up a conversation.

"So, you doing good?"

"Yeah, it's great to be back."

There was some silence before I spoke again.

"Is everyone else worried? About, you know, Spence?"

Luke mulled over my question before talking again.

"It's hard to say. He's a great profiler, but after seeing how he was with Scratch, I could tell that some of us are on edge. But to be honest, I think he'll be fine. As long as you're here with him, I don't see him having any problems."

The conversation died after that. It was nice to know that the team had our backs, even if they were a little nervous about Spence coming back.

We made it back to the station and told Emily about our findings. My gaze shifted to the conference room where Spencer was. He looked slightly tense. Before Emily left, I stopped her.

"Is he okay?"

She sighed, scratching the back of her neck.

"He's a bit upset about the conditions and he's a bit worried he'll freak out. But I reassured him that we're all confident in him and his abilities."

I nodded and made my way into the conference room, situating myself next to him. I rubbed my hand along his arm, which caused him to take his eyes away from his work and look at me as he began to speak.

"Emily told me they asked her opinion before I got reinstated. She stuck herself out on the line for me again. She also said that the main influence in the decision was you. I know everyone's worried about me and I am too, to be honest. But I know that I'm gonna make the best of it."

I gave him a kiss on the temple and gave his arm a squeeze.

"There's my charming doctor. Just let me know if you need a break okay?"

He nodded, glancing back at his work.

"Let's catch a killer."

We worked tirelessly to find this unsub. By the next night, we had him. Spencer had talked him down from killing another girl and he did a pretty damn good job.

Back on the jet, we were seated across from each other, our hands joined at the center of the small table.

"So Spence, how does it feel to be back?" JJ asked.

"It feels pretty good. Although it feels like something has changed."

"You were in a maximum security prison. If you didn't change, you're not human," Luke responded.

"I feel like not all of it was bad, though. Remember how I used to be bothered by germs?"

"I was pretty sure your daughter would have ruined that phobia for you, but I'm amazed to see that it is still in full effect," JJ quipped.

"Well, they don't really bother me that much anymore."

But once JJ offered some of her food, he politely declined. Prison may have changed him, but at heart he was still himself.

Once we got home, Delilah ran from her room to greet us at the door. She flung herself into Spencer's arms as I said goodbye to my dad.

"Mom, dad, I have a problem."

"What's up, bug?"

"I have a project due next week and I need to interview a sibling. But I don't have one. So can we go over to Aunt JJ's so I can interview Henry?"

"Sure, sweetie," I responded. I noticed Spencer's face slightly falter.

"I want a sibling someday," she muttered as she walked up the stairs to her room. Spencer was awfully quiet as we went through out nighttime routine. Once we got into bed, I decided to pry.

"What's going on? You don't look okay."

He propped himself up on his elbow and looked over at me. He looked like he was deep in thought before he spoke.

"I want more kids. Delilah wants a sibling and I want to give one to her. But I'm worried that I'm not all there yet in order to handle another one."

It seemed like he had thought about this a lot more than the time it took from walking in the door to getting into bed. I wanted more kids too and it seemed like Spencer had similar worries as me.

I pulled him into my arms as he laid his head on my chest. I rubbed my hand up and down his back, trying to soothe his worries.

"We can wait until you're ready, Spence."

"I also don't want to put you through a rough pregnancy again if you don't want more."

"I want more. Of course I want to have more baby geniuses. I want Delilah to have siblings that she can play with and teach new things. But I'm willing to wait until you are ready. Delilah would do the same. We care about you so much, baby. We're willing to wait."

I could see the tears starting to form in his eyes. He gave me a gentle, but passionate kiss.

"Thank you. For everything. For giving me this life, for giving me Delilah, for making me happy."

I gave him another quick kiss, hoping that it would convey just how much I loved him in a simple action.

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought back on the last few months. I knew that our struggles were far from over, but it seemed like we were headed in a good direction.

Hearing the sound of his breathing, the gentle rise and fall of his chest, brought me a sense of peace. As long as he's here and he's safe, I'm happy.

"Love you," I heard him mumble into my shoulder. The faintest kiss could be felt on my collarbone.

"Love you too, Spence."

"Don't leave me," I heard him mumble. I could tell he was on the verge of sleep. I placed a kiss on his head, trying to soothe his troubled mind.

"I'm not going anywhere."

I could feel him smirking against my skin before we both drifted off to sleep. Yeah, I never plan on letting him go ever again.

That was the final chapter! The epilogue will be posted later, but I hope you guys enjoyed this story. I had fun writing it. Also, stay tuned to hear what I'm writing next! <3
