Chapter 16 (Phoenix)

Fuck shit, fuckitty fuck fuck! Sonva gun! FUCK! FUCK FUCK!

Miran you son of a bitch!

Miles away, in the crumbling Commission building, Miran sneezes as he is creating illusions, which help the innocent Commission office employees and training heroes-to-be to escape as the Paranormal Liberation Army attack it, the strain causing him to almost pass out at this point.

But I wouldn’t get to know that until later on.

For now, I try not to panic. Skeptic and Toga are the ones closest to me, as Compress and Spinner are distracted trying to hang onto Gigantomachia as he plows forward through the town and into the forest around it. I curse under my breath even more as Toga stares at me, who is held in Keigo’s arms now as she almost slipped off Gigantomachia as her balance goes off. Skeptic is eyeing me in suspicion, and I know I need to come up with something that will keep him from attacking me and potentially Keigo as he makes his move to get Toga away from the rest to safety.

“Um…” It takes me a few seconds before like a light bulb switches on, I get an answer that will sway their attention from my appearance, “Remember how I told ya I wanted revenge on a certain hero? Well, I had to make sure I didn’t look like his kid in my time underground. So I had my skin put under an illusion by a friend.”

Toga just continues to stare at my now clear face and blue hair in awe, while Keigo literally sighs at the turn of events. He finally stabilizes Toga who then finds a safe perch to hang onto Gigantomachia.

Skeptic continues to stare at me in scrutiny, and it is after a few minutes of Gigantomachia plowing through the forest that he then nods and accepts my explanation. In the lure of pretending to take down the Endbitch, I had Skeptic go as far as to make a revenge video on how the Endewhore had treated me in my childhood. The joke was on Skeptic though, Eraser’s idea of me training to hack a computer system with one of the commission lackeys had worked out in my favour, and Skeptic did not know that his system had a time bomb placed on it, ready to corrupt everything he has digitally in a few minutes. It was so effective that in the process it would even take down Detnerat’s entire digital and security system.

I am glad that the illusion that I had placed on me was only on my skin and not my clothes, which were the villain wear I wore as Dabi. That would have been bad. My work as a hero had definitely caught their eyes and the only thing that had kept anyone from realizing I was the hero they had seen on the news with Hawks was the fact that I had a very distinguishable mask as a part of my hero suit. Except for my hair, my face would have been easily recognized by the idiots if I didn’t have a mask. Thank whatever entity out there that there is for that.

As the giant quirked beast makes leeway towards where Shigaraki is, I then spot a group of the  Liberation Army, about to attack the R-rated hero Midnight.

Midnight, as far as I knew, is a teacher at U.A. She is also one of the few people who Eraser had trusted with the information of who I truly was after Shouto and Endebitch found out. She is Eraser’s best friend, and she helped me on patrol once, on one of the few times that I was out with Keigo. She was definitely one of the few I had come to like and who accepted me regardless of my past. There was no way that I was letting anything happen to her, especially after getting to know her the way that I did.

“Hawks! On your ten!” I yell, pointing at the woman who lay injured and was about to be ambushed by the horde of bloodthirsty assholes who definitely weren’t looking at her right.

Keigo spots the hero on the ground and his wings immediately perk up. He jumps off, swooping down below towards my new sister figure. I see some of his feathers immediately piercing and knocking out the bastards, as he lands beside her. He looks back once at me and I know what he means through his expression.

You have to get Toga out of there safely.

He then snatches her up and flies away towards where we know Recovery Girl is situated, to get her first aid as fast as he could.

I stare at him as he flies away. I know he’ll be back soon but seeing someone we both have come to respect and care for as injured as Midnight is, is now making me uneasy as I start wondering about the safety of my brother and his classmates, towards whom we are dashing towards in Jaku City.

As we reach the main battlefield, my mouth snaps open in shock. Most of the area is in ruin, and with horror I realize that it is due to the decay quirk that the Handsy Gamer boy had unleashed as he made his way out of the hospital a few moments prior. Many pro heroes are running about; civilians who had been evacuated are still rushing to a safer spot as the decay had reached the city from the hospital that was perched on a hilltop a few miles from the main city centre. I look at the devastation that the man-child’s quirk has caused and a rage fills me as I hear the cries and yells of the innocent civilians who called out for their friends and family. Is this what I had signed up for when I was still a villain?

The answer was no. I had not. Not at the cost of innocent lives had I wanted to exact my revenge.

In the distance, I see a group of people, including Eraserhead, the Greenie bean and the angry Pomeranian fighting the transformed Shigaraki.

Gigantomachia stops right at the crater that was created where the hospital was previously at and as he exclaims “Master!” the rest of the heroes who had been able to escape the decay, converge upon us.

“Dabi!” Skeptic yells at me. “Burn them!”

But instead I burn him, and he falls off of Gigantomachia crying out in pain.

Compress and Spinner, who witness my evident betrayal, immediately realize then, that I am no more an ally.

It doesn’t take me even two seconds for me to knock them out. Endewhore swoops down onto where we are with Shouto and both proceed to tie them and place quirk inhibiting cuffs on them. The BMI hero Fat Gum immediately knocks out Gigantomachia with the help of one of the Class 1-A kids and Toga who is staring at what was happening in shock, finally gets to her senses.

“Why Dabi-kun?” she finally asks, hurt can be clearly read in her eyes.

I walk towards her and raise my hand ruffling her hair. “Because, it’s the right thing.”

I know that Toga had always looked up to me. To her, I am an older brother that she always wanted. She had put her utmost trust within me. To me, Toga too had become akin to my own siblings in the short time I knew her. As I look at her, my eyes as kind as the day that I accepted her as a sister figure, I ask her.

“Do you trust me, Himiko-chan?”

A pause of silence passes as she considers before she nods.

“I promise you. You will get the best life out there and that too without any suffering.” I tell her, extending my hand in offering.

As she accepts my hand, the Broccoli boy lands a huge hit on the Scratchy McGee who I formerly used to call my boss.
