Trips Suspended and Lives Nearly Ended

(Y/N)'s POV

The day of the Hogsmeade trip started out with a bang, we were walking to the courtyard and trying to cheer up Harry, who hadn't been able to get permission, when we saw a commotion.

Lavender Brown seemed to be crying. Parvati had her arm around her and was explaining something to Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas, who were looking very serious. I immediately rushed over to see if everyone was ok. But I couldn't tell over Lavender's wailing.

"What's the matter, Lavender?" said Hermione anxiously as she, Harry, and Ron went to join the group. "She got a letter from home this morning," Parvati whispered. "It's her rabbit, Binky. He's been killed by a fox." "Oh," said Hermione, "I'm sorry, Lavender."

"That's terrible Lavender, I'm so sorry" I said gripping her shoulder, she pried herself from Parvati and clung onto me, still sobbing, I tried to comfort her as best I could and pat her back, but honestly it just made me feel very awkward.

"I should have known!" said Lavender tragically. "You know what day it is?" "Er-" "The sixteenth of October! 'That thing you're dreading, it will happen on the sixteenth of October!' Remember? She was right, she was right!"

I had to force myself into not saying "You have got to be kidding me!" The whole class was gathered around Lavender now. Seamus shook his head seriously. Hermione hesitated; then she said, "You...you were dreading Binky being killed by a fox?"

"Well, not necessarily by a fox," said Lavender, looking up at Hermione with streaming eyes, "but I was obviously dreading him dying, wasn't I?" "Oh," said Hermione. She paused again. Then... "Was Binky an old rabbit?"

"N-no!" sobbed Lavender. "H-he was only a baby!" Parvati stroked her hair and I tightened my grip around Lavender's shoulders. "Sometimes I hate being a Legilimens" I thought as another wave of sadness came over me.

"But then, why would you dread him dying?" said Hermione. Parvati glared at her. I gave her a look to try and say, "Not the time!" But she ignored it. "Well, look at it logically," said Hermione, turning to the rest of the group.

"I mean, Binky didn't even die today, did he? Lavender just got the news today" Lavender wailed loudly as tears forced themselves to my eyes despite having no emotional attachment to the rabbit. "–and she can't have been dreading it, because it's come as a real shock."

"Don't mind Hermione, Lavender," said Ron loudly, "she doesn't think other people's pets matter very much." Now it was my turn to give Ron the same look.

"Lavender, look at me," I said, wiping her tears as she looked up at me, "I'm sure this was a terrible shock, but Binky had a happy life, and there was nothing you could have done, so how about we all just try to have some fun at Hogsmeade, yeah, in Binky's honour?" She looked reluctant at first but gave a tearful smile.

Unfortunately my kind-hearted nature backfired on me horribly, I spent the next few hours with Lavender Brown practically glued to my arm, it was worse when we got to Hogsmeade, Ron and Hermione were still arguing which was one thing, another was that as soon as Lavender grabbed hold of me Hermione stormed of in the other direction.

And it was hard to enjoy Hogsmeade when Lavender and Parvati spent half of the time in Madam Padifoots tea shop, which might as well have been a broom cupboard for someone of my size and was covered in very expensive and very breakable china cups.

I wouldn't normally mind this, but even the conversation was boring, all they did was look for signs in tea leaves, which was an interesting experience for the first fifteen seconds but after two hours became unbearable. And even when I did manage to free myself Hermione and Ron were nowhere to be seen, when I finally found them, it was time to leave.

Ron ran ahead for a final look in Honeydukes, Hermione seemed really cross at me for some reason, so I confronted her. "What's got your wand in a knot?" I asked her delicately, she sighed and insisted it was nothing, "I just wanted to see the Shrieking Shack is all"

"Well that's fine, we can go next time" I promised enthusiastically. She seemed to cheer up, "Um, did you know it's the most haunted building in Britain?" "Really? Well you better hold my hand if I get scared then" I said, she blushed and nodded.

"Next time we go to Hogsmeade, we can make a, um, a thing of it" I said hopefully, trying to be careful with my words. She smiled and nodded again, much to my delight, but it still felt weird for some reason.

"Are you sure that was all there was to it? Are you upset because of that thing with Lavender?" I guessed after getting a read of how she was feeling emotionally. Not that I meant to, but it came in handy.

"What thing with Lavender," she spat he name as if it was a foul sounding curse word, "You are free to talk to who you like; I couldn't care less about Lavender!" "I meant the rabbit thing" I said, trying to clear things up.

"I know what you meant!" she said, getting madder. "You're lying, it's something else, I can tell bec-" "Because you read my mind?" She spat, I was at a loss for words, why was she so mad all of a sudden? "Will you stop doing that!" she screamed at me. "Sorry I was just trying to-"

"Well nobody asked you to!" She sighed "You can't just keep saying sorry after the fact, just don't do it in the first place." I put my head down and averted my eyes, she was right, I had no reason, no right, to look into their thoughts, even with the best intentions.

"Listen Hermione, I didn't ask for this ok, I'm not even doing it on purpose" "That doesn't matter!" She stormed off. I let out the longest sigh I could manage and followed; we didn't talk the whole way back to the castle.

Despite our falling out we collected some stuff to bring back to Harry and headed off to the dorm, only to find it blocked off by a crowd, the Fat Lady had been attacked, it was Peeves who first explained as Dumbledore arrived.

"We need to find her," said Dumbledore. "Professor McGonagall, please go to Mr. Filch at once and tell him to search every painting in the castle for the Fat Lady." "You'll be lucky!" said a cackling voice.

It was Peeves the Poltergeist, bobbing over the crowd and looking delighted, as he always did, at the sight of wreckage or worry. "What do you mean, Peeves?" said Dumbledore calmly, and Peeves's grin faded a little. He didn't dare taunt Dumbledore.

"Ashamed, Your Headship, sir. Doesn't want to be seen. She's a horrible mess. Saw her running through the landscape up on the fourth floor, sir, dodging between the trees. Crying something dreadful," he said happily. "Poor thing." he added unconvincingly.

"Did she say who did it?" said Dumbledore quietly. "Oh yes, Professorhead," said Peeves, "He got very angry when she wouldn't let him in, you see." Peeves flipped over and grinned at Dumbledore from between his own legs. "Nasty temper he's got, that Sirius Black."

We had to sleep in the great hall for tonight, then when we were allowed back in the common room, there was another painting, Sir Cadogan, guarding it, either way, I didn't feel very safe in my bed anymore.

I was in a horrible mood later in the week, thinking back to our argument, I hoped Lupin's class would cheer me up like normal, I was wrong. Apparently, the universe had deemed that I needed more of Snape in my life, he was covering for Lupin today, who was under the weather.

"Turn to page 394" he said in his drawl of a voice after Harry had come in, I did, "Wait am I looking at the wrong book?" I looked around for help, but the others seemed as confused as I was.

"But sir we shouldn't start werewolves for another two weeks" piped up Hermione, honestly, I didn't even see her enter the room. "I am free to teach whatever I see fit Miss Granger; you should learn not to speak out of turn" she put her head down.

"Who can tell me the difference between an Animagus and a werewolf?" Hermione's hand shot up as always "Professor we haven't covered werewolves yet how are we meant to know-" I expressed my concern but he cut me off, "Hence why I am teaching you it (L/N), speak out of turn again and you will quickly find yourself in detention" I quietened down.

Hermione then couldn't contain herself and blurted out the answer. "An Animagus can transform at will, werewolves have no choice and transforms at a full moon, they are completely savage, they'd kill their best friend if they crossed paths" she finished, I gave her a small smile and a quick thumbs up she beamed at me in return.

She answered a few more questions nobody else could, but near the end of class Snape did something uncalled for "Ten points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know it all" her face dropped, she quickly put her face down on her desk, probably to cover her tears, everyone present was glaring at Snape, hatred burning in their eyes.

I finally gave in to the anger and spoke up, "That's bang out of order, you can't do that!" I protested, standing up from my seat, the desk jerking forward as I did. Ron backed me up "You asked a question and she answered it! What's wrong with that?"

"You have no right to tell me what I can and can't do boy" he spat as he turned to face me, completely ignoring Ron, "Detention, now back in your seat." I said a few of my favourite swears under my breath in his direction.

"What was that!?" He spat with even more venom in his voice. Unfortunately, I had another bad habit that reared its head, I was seeing red at this point and all my rationale flooded out of my head

"What, your ears broke? Or is it that you're just all nose?" there were several gasps from the class. I continued, unable to shut my big mouth "I bet you've been waiting for that one, did they call you an insufferable know it all at school sir? Is that why you're so bitter? Or is it because the closest you will ever get to teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts is covering it?" I finally sat down, everyone waited with bated breath to see what Snape would do.

He let out a very deep breath, his nostrils flared, and he flapped his robe. Rage was burned onto his face he took a very deep breath and pointed to the door "Professor Dumbledore's office, NOW!" I stormed out, kicking a chair over as I left, unable to control my anger, or at least the anger I now had in my head.

As I was pulled into Dumbledore's office, I noticed he looked different for some reason, "Weird" I thought but pushed it aside as he addressed me. "Do you understand the situation you are in?" He said in a serious tone.

"Yes" I said, honesty is probably the best option right now. "Your behaviour towards certain members of staff continues to worsen" he said with a sigh. "He deserved it" I said under my breath, he heard me.

"Maybe so, but your behaviour is inexcusable, and you will have to be punished." "I guessed as much" I said with a nervous half-smile. "I must regretfully suspend your Hogsmeade privileges, I hope that this will teach you the error of your ways" he sighed.

"But professor! I have a... thing" I said, losing confidence in my argument as I looked at his stern expression, he let out a deep sigh. I tried to play it off like I normally did "It's alright professor, you're doing me a favour, it was very bad for my teeth" I joked, but honestly, I was absolutely gutted.

"Perhaps if I am informed that your behaviour improves, I will rethink my decision" I swallowed a lump in my throat and nodded, "However, there is another matter I wish to discuss with you" he explained.

"I fear your disposition towards emotional moments may lead to instances where you are placed in grave danger" I looked at him, very confused, "I aim to help you with this matter." "I'm going to be honest Professor I have no clue what you are on about" I said, rubbing my neck out of nervousness.

He smiled briefly, "I apologise my boy, you see in my years of experience I have picked up several habits, one of which is the ability to make my thoughts seem like utter nonsense to anyone but myself" he chuckled.

"To put it simply, with your ability to read and be influenced by emotions, I fear you will be-" he paused as if thinking about his words "too tempting for creatures like the dementors to resist." "Like on the train" I shuddered, and he nodded.

"As your powers grow, you will become more in tune with the emotions around you, but this presents its own set of challenges" "Because I'm more likely to mimic them, like last year" I said, finally understanding, he nodded grimly "And so, I am taking precautions, to ensure your safety" and with a wave of his hand, I was excused.

Harry's POV

As everyone packed up Snape stopped the class "I want an essay on werewolves on my desk by next class, 2 rolls should suffice" there was a groan, "But sir, its Quidditch tomorrow" I protested, "Well I suggest you take extra care Mr Potter, loss of limb will not excuse you"

As I left he stopped me again "Potter, tell (L/N) I expect his essay to be triple the length of his peers, and done to the highest standard he could hope to reach, failure to do so will warrant further punishment" he said with a sneer, and as I turned to leave he added " And that I will contact him at a later date about his detention" he said with an unsettling half smile.

"Well, that went well" declared (Y/N) as he came back from Dumbledore's office with bad news "Sorry Hermione, looks like you going to have to postpone the visit the Shrieking Shack, but don't worry I'm sure it will be a great time when we do go, a little birdy told me that It's the most haunted place in Britain" she raised an eyebrow, "For the life of me, I can't remember who it was"

He seemed to notice she was upset "Don't worry, you know me, I'll find some way to get out of it, even if I have to apparate to Hogsmeade" he said trying to cheer her up, she just rolled her eyes, but she did look a bit sad.

Once I gave him the news about the essay, he seemed to get newfound energy "I'm going to show him the best essay on werewolves Hogwarts has ever seen!" "that'll show the slimy git" he cackled like a villain and ran off to the common room

This did bring a smile to my face, but I was more concerned with the Quidditch match tomorrow and how I was going to get all this work done in the meantime.

By the time I got to the common room after practice later that day, Ron was begging Hermione for help with his essay and she was ignoring him, meanwhile (Y/N) was scribbling away at his own, Hermione was looking over his shoulder every so often and making comments.

"Did you mention wolfsbane?" "Yes, but I'm doing a bigger section on that later" seeing them work like this was almost impressive, they were like a well-oiled machine, constantly bouncing ideas off each other.

After he was done with his essay she began quizzing him about werewolves to see if he missed anything, eventually he got fed up and said "Hermione, to know anything else about werewolves, I'd have to...be...one" then he paused for half a second and they stared at each other with wide eyes, as if having a mental conversation, and with (Y/N) involved, they very well could have been.

I left them to it and quickly went to sleep to get ready for Quidditch tomorrow, we were against Hufflepuff, we needed this win, McGonagall all but said so.

(Y/N)'s POV

The next day, we had to watch Harry's Quidditch match, well, I say watch, it was thundering and storming, it was hard to see anything, I was having a hard time making out who was who, I finally caught Harry in my sight line.

I watched as he soared higher and higher chasing the snitch, Cedric Diggory hot on his trail, until lightning struck, almost hitting them both, at this, Cedric diverted off. Then it happened, I could just make out wisps of pitch black robes surrounding Harry, the dementors had attacked.

I pulled my eyes away from them as I heard gasps from the crowd, my eyes quickly focused on him, I saw him hurtling towards the earth, it was like someone had a grip on my heart and was squeezing for all they were worth.

I was transfixed, I couldn't look away, even though my whole body told me to. I gripped my wand, pulling it out to stop him, but I was too late, I know I could do the spell, but I couldn't see him, I couldn't hit him, I couldn't...

"He's going to die, he's going to die, I can't... what do I do?" I thought over and over again, by breathing became erratic, every breath was like a jagged knife stabbing my chest, each metre closer to the ground was another needle in my heart.

Everything happened very slowly, but I thought I was moving twice the speed I should have been, I couldn't breathe, my whole body started to freak out, and my mind wasn't helping "oh god I'm having a heart attack, I'm going to die!" I couldn't catch my breath, I was surrounded, I needed to leave, I didn't want to be here. It was too loud; it was too much. I started to search for any exits near me, to no avail.

Luckily, Dumbledore voice cut through the noise, he did the same spell I would have tried "Arresto Momentum!" he spoke clearly, the rest of the time was a blur. I barely noticed what happened.

All I could hear was the rain pouring, and my heart beating in my ears, Hermione dragged me by the arm to the hospital wing, everything was numb, but the second I saw Harry, lying there in the hospital bed, Ron stood over him with the collected pieces of his broom, I was overcome with a wave of terror, and nausea.

Harry's POV

"Looks a bit peaky, doesn't he?" Said a voice I identified as Ron's, either Fred or Georges voice answered it, "Peaky?" "What d'you expect him to look like? He fell fifty feet." The other twin said "Yeah, c'mon, Ron. We'll walk you off the Astronomy Tower and see how you come out looking."

I decided to answer as I opened my eyes "Probably a right sight better than he normally does". When my eyes came into focus, I saw the entire Quidditch team as well as Ron and Hermione surrounding me, "Gave us a right good scare, mate." Said Fred. I sat up, "How are you feeling?" asked Hermione, "Oh, brilliant" I answered quickly

"What happened?" I asked, "You fell off your broom." Answered Ron quickly "Really? I meant the match. Who won?" There were a few glances between them, they explained everything to me, about the Dementors, and the Nimbus.

Once they all said words of relief I noticed another sound, I saw over Hermione's shoulder, (Y/N) was perched over a hospital bed, shaking and throwing up into a large bucket, Madam Pomfrey was beside him patting him on the back, he looked pale and clammy.

No wonder he was so ill, this had to be terrible for him to see, especially considering the height I fell from and the state of the Nimbus. His boggart had just become a reality, his deepest fear just smacked him in the face, I felt terrible.

After Madam Pomfrey gave me the all clear to move about I went to see how he was, "How are you feeling?" I asked as he finished retching, but he still looked very tired and haggard, "Tired, but better now I know you aren't dead, you put on quite the show this time Potter, can you never just have a normal match?" he smirked dully as I gave him a smile, weak as it was I hoped it helped.

"Well at least there's never a dull moment." He added, regaining some of his usual cheer but there were still the remnants of tears in his eyes.

"Knowing you, I'm surprised you didn't somehow catch the snitch on the way down" he smirked, I looked down, upset I had let everyone down, "Don't worry about it, you can't win them all" he said gripping my shoulder to comfort me, "Even if you are the Harry Potter" he giggled.

It had been a few weeks and it was the lead up to Christmas, everyone was excited because a new Hogsmeade trip was announced, I was planning on sneaking off with them this time, I wouldn't miss it for the world, (Y/N) seemed eager to join me, we had a plan to use the invisibility cloak.

That was until (Y/N) received a letter in the post on the day of the trip. "Oh, you're kidding! That evil, conniving bitter-" it was followed by a few more words that made Hermione's eyes widen in shock, and Ron to let out a chortle.

"What's wrong?" I asked. "The slimy git has scheduled my detention at the same time as the Hogsmeade trip!" he said, barely containing his anger. Hermione looked very melancholy at the news. "He definitely didn't do it by accident" I said, I was not happy, our plans were ruined.

"Harry, go without me, honestly, I'm probably gonna be stuck in there for ages anyway, so you might as well go and have fun" he whispered to me, most likely to avoid Hermione's eye line, he looked at me expectantly, so I nodded.
