New Patronus and A Hippogriff Bonus

(Y/N)'s POV

After running for our lives we decided to swing behind a huge tree, holding our breath and hoping it would run past, after a few tense seconds we decided to peek around the tree, but then, the werewolf appeared, approaching slowly, it poised itself to attack.

I quickly got in front of my friends, expecting a lot of pain, but luckily, Buckbeak came to our rescue. He charged the werewolf relentlessly, attacking it with his front legs, rearing back and delivering crushing blows to the werewolf.

Luckily the werewolf manages to have enough foresight to know it was beaten, with a vicious snarl it disappeared into the depths of the forbidden forest, my only hope that once he came to his senses, Lupin would be fine, and able to support our story, not that anyone would take the word of a werewolf seriously.

"Poor Professor Lupin is having a really tough night..." said Hermione as he left to lick his wounds, I would have replied, but a chill blew in from in front of me, I recognised the eerie presence immediately, shadows fluttered over the moon, greasy as smoke. "Dementors. Let's go."

We skidded down to the edge of the lake, waiting in the trees, we finally saw past Harry come into view, he was attempting to save Sirius from the swarm of Dementors. We just stood there watching as he attempted to conjure a patronus to protect the two, I wanted to go and help, but Harry was insistent that his father would be here soon so there was no need.

"Don't worry. My Dad will come... Right there... you'll see... he'll come... any minute... he'll conjure the Patronus" I eyed Harry worriedly, "Maybe you were just-" I started "HE WILL! He will come!" We watched on in horror as one after another, Dementors dropped from the sky, fed off Sirius and Harry, then vanished into the cyclone of shadows they had created.

But still nothing, "Harry! HE'S NOT COMING" I bellowed. Hermione's eyes flashed desperately to the pitiful sight of Harry and Black at the water's edge... wracked with pain... dying... "No one's coming! You're dying, both of you... and no one's coming!"

I held onto Hermione as we watched in disbelief, "This is horrible..." she pressed into me to avoid watching, then something, which I can only assume was Sirius's soul, was ripped from his body, through his mouth, a white light hovering just over his face.

Suddenly, as if he had been overtaken by anger, or frustration, Harry's face changed. He drew his wand. We tried to protest but he didn't listen, we watched on as Harry slashed through the trees, down to the rocky outcrop, to the exact spot where he claimed his father appeared. Poising his wand, he looked out over the sea of Dementors on the other side of the lake.

There was a moment when everything fell dead silent, likely the Dementor's giving pause at the thought of new prey, and then two words cut through the night. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" Harry shouted commandingly.

At first, a wisp of silver escaped from his wand, like before with Lupin, it hovered just above his wand, but then, in a sudden but elegant motion, it bloomed, extending out and flourishing with light like fire.

A great stag charged down the Dementors, gliding across the crystal surface of the lake, then into the air itself, causing all the Dementors to retreat. As the light cleared, Harry stood utterly still, wand extended to the heavens, as the last of the storm cleared, he simply let his arm drop.

After the amazing display of magical ability, we had to take a moment, all of us embracing to calm ourselves, we all sang Harry's praises, as he explained his train of thought. "It wasn't my dad I saw earlier. It was... me. I saw myself conjuring the Patronus before.

I knew I could do it this time, because... because I'd already done it. Does that make sense?" Me and Hermione contemplated this for a few seconds, "No" we said in unison. Unfortunately we didn't have much time to relax, knowing Harrys past self would be safe we quickly retreated with Buckbeak under the cover of darkness,

We mounted him, the three of us managing to barely fit, Harry in front, then me, and Hermione on the back, just before we took off for the tower were Sirius was held, Hermione had a confession, "I really don't like FLYING!" she yelled as we took off, squeezing herself closer to me, not that I minded, it was nice.

Unfortunately, life was never simple, in mid-air, we noticed something up ahead, a swarm of roaming Dementors overlooking the tower, probably as guards, Harry tried to reach for his wand, but was too preoccupied with flying Buckbeak.

"Trial by fire then" I thought to myself. I thought back, Harry's first try on my mind, "The first time I rode a broom" this was largely because we were flying, but there was a memory fresh in my mind.

I thought back to (B/N) first teaching me to balance on a broom, I must have been what, six? Mum and Dad were there too, waiting in the wings in case he got a little too enthusiastic, which of course, he did. I was shakily sitting on his old Comet.

he was giving me words of encouragement, though the memory was so old I could barely remember his voice, my parents were cheering me on. All four of us laughing gleefully when I started to slowly zoom off down the drive.

Oddly, It was the smell I remembered most, (B/N) always made sure his Quidditch equipment was in good shape, so he polished the Comet religiously, even his old one, so I could always remember the smell of that broomstick polish, and it was just about to rain at the time.

We didn't realise until later, but thinking back on the day, I could smell the rain coming in the air, a smell like ozone and some sort of oil that I can never place, that mixture of smells was something I would never forget.

But that was why it wasn't an entirely happy memory, every time I remembered that smell, I felt sad. It was something I would never experience again, not fully, it would never be the same, but it brought back the perfect feeling of that moment, even for a second, even if it was bittersweet.

"Are you ready?" Lupin's voice echoed in my head, I wiped the beginnings of tears from my eyes and pointed my wand forward over Harry's shoulder. Armed with my most precious memory. "Expecto Patronum!"

At first it was the same as before, a wisp of gasses, but then they rushed together, taking a form, something I recognised immediately, it was Bones, of course it was, what else would it be? She had helped me through so much, of course she would be the thing that protected me from Dementors, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

She darted between them pawing at them, brushing them aside, as if they were as small as her toy mouse, I could almost hear her purring. And with that, the Dementors were scattered, Buckbeak was free to fly.

As we dismounted Buckbeak, Harry muttered something to me, "Mine was bigger than yours" he said, remembering the forbidden forest a year prior, I chuckled, as we reached Sirius's cell, I reassured him "Don't worry, this isn't my first prison break" "Alohomora!" I tried first, "Yeah, never that easy" then I tried a spell I'd always wanted to try but never had the opportunity to.

"Open sesame" but it was a spell built for wooden doors not forged iron like Sirius's cell, so while the hinges creaked, still nothing, "Portaberto" I cast on the lock, still nothing, "Oh move over!" said Hermione, taking the less subtle approach "BOMBARDA!" the wall surrounding the cell door exploded, freeing its occupant

"Merlin's beard Hermione! Calm down" I said in shock, she just mimed to a watch on her wrist, "Fair enough" I smiled, she look proud of herself, so I gave her a quick high five and she beamed at me.

As Black stepped out, I motioned to Buckbeak. "Your freedom awaits you good sir, and to be nice, we've thrown in a bonus! A free hippogriff" he chuckled, it was an odd noise, like an instrument that hadn't been played in a while, but it was undeniably laughter.

After saying a goodbye to Harry, and surprisingly mounting Buckbeak with no issue, he addressed us. "I'll be forever grateful for this. To the three of you" I waved, "Well if I'm ever in need of a wanted fugitive, I will let you know" I said, and with a smile, and a wish on a passing falling star, he left, finally free again.

Hermione grabbed our arms "We have to go." With a nod we all sprinted down to the hospital wing as fast as our legs could carry us. Finally arriving at the next strike of the clock tower. Only to find Dumbledore backing out of the room.

"By the way, when in doubt, I always find retracing my steps to be a wise place to begin... Good luck." As Dumbledore begun to close the door we stumbled frantically forward, the door about to hit the jamb, when... suddenly... Dumbledore stopped and looked up.

"Well?" he said, a smile already presents on his face "He's free, Sirius. We... we did it." "Did what?" he asked, a twinkle in his eye, Dumbledore swung open the door. We entered the hospital wing as it closed.

Only to catch the faintest glimpse of... us... across the room... just as we seemed to evaporate. Ron blinked at us, then turned in shock and frowned. "How'd you lot get over there? I was just talking to you... over there." He glanced to the other side of the room.

Hermione glanced mischievously to us. "What d'you think? Too much for him? Everything that's happened tonight?" "Afraid so. Always been a bit of the nervous type, Ron has." Harry added "Yeah, seeing double, not a good sign, and talking to people who aren't there! It's not looking good" I sighed, then all three of us cracked up at his expense.

A few minutes after our arrival, there was a huge commotion outside. "What was that?" said Madam Pomfrey in alarm. we could hear angry voices, growing louder and louder. Madam Pomfrey was staring at the door.

"Really" she tutted "they'll wake everybody up! What do they think they're doing?" "Who are they going to wake up? We are the only ones in here and the rest of the castle wouldn't hear them from here anyway" I asked, she just frowned at me.

I caught some of what they were saying as they approached "He must have Disapparated, Severus. We should have left somebody in the room with him. When this gets out" "HE DIDN'T DISAPPARATE!" Snape roared, now very close at hand. "YOU CAN'T APPARATE OR DISAPPARATE INSIDE THIS CASTLE! THIS. HAS. SOMETHING. TO. DO. WITH. POTTER!"

"Severus be reasonable Harry has been locked up" BAM. The door of the hospital wing burst open. Fudge, Snape, and Dumbledore came striding into the ward. Dumbledore alone looked calm. Indeed, he looked as though he was quite enjoying himself. Fudge appeared angry. But Snape was beside himself. "OUT WITH IT, POTTER!" he bellowed. "WHAT DID YOU DO?"

"Professor Snape!" shrieked Madam Pomfrey. "Control yourself!" "See here, Snape, be reasonable," said Fudge. "This door's been locked, we just saw -" "THEY HELPED HIM ESCAPE, I KNOW IT!" Snape howled, pointing at Harry then at me and Hermione.

His face was twisted; spit was flying from his mouth. "Calm down, man!" Fudge barked. "You're talking nonsense!" "YOU DON'T KNOW POTTER!" shrieked Snape. "HE DID IT, I KNOW HE DID IT" "That will do, Severus," said Dumbledore quietly.

"Think about what you are saying. This door has been locked since I left the ward ten minutes ago. Madam Pomfrey, have these students left their beds?" "Of course not!" said Madam Pomfrey, bristling. "I would have heard them!" "Well, there you have it, Severus," said Dumbledore calmly.

"Unless you are suggesting that (Y/N), Harry and Hermione are able to be in two places at once, I'm afraid I don't see any point in troubling them further." Part of me wanted to laugh, part of me couldn't help but to feel bad for him.

"Do you need something Professor? I don't know if we can help, we've all been here so were a bit behind, has something happened?" I said cheekily, he glared at me and stormed out of the room

"Fellow seems quite unbalanced," said Fudge, staring after him. "I'd watch out for him if I were you, Dumbledore." "Oh, he's not unbalanced," said Dumbledore quietly. "He's just suffered a severe disappointment." "He's not the only one!" puffed Fudge.

"The Daily Prophet's going to have a field day! We had Black cornered and he slipped through our fingers yet again! All it needs now is for the story of that Hippogriff's escape to get out, and I'll be a laughingstock! Well... I'd better go and notify the Ministry..."

"And the Dementors?" said Dumbledore. "They'll be removed from the school, I trust?" "Oh yes, they'll have to go," said Fudge, running his fingers distractedly through his hair.

"Never dreamed they'd attempt to administer the Kiss on an innocent boy... Completely out of control... no, I'll have them packed off back to Azkaban tonight... Perhaps we should think about dragons at the school entrance..."

"Hagrid would like that," said Dumbledore, smiling at us. As he and Fudge left the dormitory, Madam Pomfrey hurried to the door and locked it again. Muttering angrily to herself, she headed back to her office.

Nobody at Hogwarts knew the truth of what had happened the night that Sirius, Buckbeak, and Pettigrew had vanished except Me, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Professor Dumbledore. As the end of term approached, there were tonnes of rumours floating round, but none of them came close to the truth.

Malfoy was furious about Buckbeak. He was convinced that Hagrid had found a way of smuggling the Hippogriff to safety and seemed outraged that he and his father had been outwitted by a gamekeeper. Much to my amusement, every time I saw him, I asked if he'd seen something flying by, he would get red in the face with anger and leave.

Percy Weasley, meanwhile, had much to say about Sirius's escape. "If I manage to get into the Ministry, I'll have a lot of proposals to make about Magical Law Enforcement!" he told the only person who would listen, his girlfriend, Penelope. That poor girl.

The only sour note to all of this was the sad news that Professor Lupin had resigned for the Defence Against the Dark Arts job. The whole of our dorm was miserable about his resignation. "Wonder what they'll give us next year?" said Seamus Finnigan gloomily. "Maybe a vampire," suggested Dean Thomas hopefully.

"Yeah that would be cool, I've always wondered what those lollipops in Honeydukes taste like to them" I added, Neville spoke up in a quiet voice, "Blood...probably" he said in a matter of fact way, there was a second pause, then we all burst into uproarious laughter. "You got me there mate." I laughed.

Our exam results came out on the last day of term. Harry, Ron, and Hermione had passed every subject, as had I. I walked happily up to Hermione to show he I got top marks on quite a few subjects, even my Divination score wasn't terrible, she smiled at me.

"Guess that time in the library payed off in the end" I said, she nodded happily. "Good thing too, I think Snape has it out for us all now" I chuckled, remembering him glaring at me every time I saw him.

The weather was brilliant, we won house cup, passed our exams, life was good, and before I knew it, just like every year, we were boarding the Hogwarts Express, waving goodbye to Hagrid as always, and trying to fit into a compartment that wasn't packed full, as always.

As we sat down, Hermione gave us some surprising news. "I went to see Professor McGonagall this morning, just before breakfast. I've decided to drop Muggle Studies." "But you passed your exam with three hundred and twenty percent!" said Ron.

"How does that even work?" I thought. "I know," sighed Hermione, "but I can't stand another year like this one. That Time-Turner, it was driving me mad. I've handed it in. Without Muggle Studies and Divination, I'll be able to have a normal schedule again."

"I still can't believe you didn't tell us about it," said Ron grumpily. "We're supposed to be your friends." "I promised I wouldn't tell anyone," said Hermione severely. "Yeah, but it would have solved like, EVERYTHING!" I said "We could have found Scabbers, or checked the Firebolt early, or stopped the Dementors at the match-"

"Exactly, it's not supposed to be used for stuff like that, you can't just whip it out whenever you want" "Then what's the point in having time travel at your disposal?" She frowned, so I put my hands up.

"Ok, so you should use it to get perfect grades, but we can't use it to save Harry from damn near going splat, makes perfect sense" I said, she just stuck her tongue out, much to our surprise. Harry was sat silently as we argued, clearly dreading going back to the Dursleys.

"Oh, cheer up, Harry!" said Hermione sadly. "I'm okay," said Harry quickly. "Just thinking about the holidays." "Yeah, I've been thinking about them too," said Ron. "Harry, you've got to come and stay with us. I'll fix it up with Mum and Dad, then I'll call you. I know how to use a fellytone now"

"A telephone, Ron," said Hermione quickly, much to my amusement. "Honestly, you should take Muggle Studies next year..." Ron ignored her. "It's the Quidditch World Cup this summer! How about it, Harry?"

"Come and stay, and we'll go and see it! Dad can usually get tickets from work." "Can I come?" I asked, he nodded, "If you want" I cheered "Harry?" "Yeah... I bet the Dursleys'd be pleased to let me come... especially after what I did to Aunt Marge..."

It was late in the day when something surprising happened. "Harry," said Hermione suddenly, peering over his shoulder. "What's that thing outside your window?" We turned to look outside. Something very small and grey was bobbing in and out of sight beyond the glass. It delivered a letter to Harry and then flew around manically fluttering around like a moth.

"It's from Sirius!" "What?" said Ron and Hermione excitedly. "Read it aloud!" I was too busy eating sweets to say anything, but I was curious too. "Dear Harry, I hope this finds you before you reach your aunt and uncle. I don't know whether they're used to owl post."

"Buckbeak and I are in hiding. I won't tell you where, in case this owl falls into the wrong hands. I have some doubt about his reliability, but he is the best I could find, and he did seem eager for the job."

"I believe the Dementors are still searching for me, but they haven't a hope of finding me here. I am planning to allow some Muggles to glimpse me soon, a long way from Hogwarts, so that the security on the castle will be lifted. There is something I never got around to telling you during our brief meeting. It was I who sent you the Firebolt-"

"Ha!" said Hermione triumphantly. "See! I told you it was from him!" I burst into laughter "Yes, but he hadn't jinxed it, had he?" said Ron. "Ouch!" The tiny owl now hooting happily in his hand, had nibbled one of his fingers in what it seemed to think was an affectionate way, it looked like a ball of fluff, It's wingspan must have been tiny because it could barely hold its own weight.

Harry continued "Crookshanks took the order to the Owl Office for me. I used your name but told them to take the gold from my own Gringotts vault. Please consider it as thirteen birthdays' worth of presents from your godfather."

"I would also like to apologise for the fright I think I gave you that night last year when you left your uncle's house. I had only hoped to get a glimpse of you before starting my journey north, but I think the sight of me alarmed you. I am enclosing something else for you, which I think will make your next year at Hogwarts more enjoyable. If ever you need me, send word. Your owl will find me. I'll write again soon. Sirius"

I stroked Crookshanks "Clever boy" he purred, but Bones jumped up from her basket, landing on his head, bowing her head a little so I would pet it instead, "You are clever too Princess, I'm proud of both of you for helping Sirius"

Once he had freed himself from under Bones, Crookshanks nudged me as if to say "You have two hands. Use them" I pet him with my other hand, they both purred in unison, this was a stark contrast to our journey to Hogwarts. Hermione was cooing over the two cats. Happy they were friends.

Harry looked eagerly inside the envelope. There was another piece of parchment in there. He read it aloud. "I, Sirius Black, Harry Potter's godfather, hereby give him permission to visit Hogsmeade on weekends."

"That'll be good enough for Dumbledore!" said Harry happily. He looked back at Sirius's letter. "Hang on, there's a PS..." I thought your friend Ron might like to keep this owl, as it's my fault he no longer has a rat." Ron's eyes widened. The minute owl was still hooting excitedly.

"Keep him?" he said uncertainly. He looked closely at the owl for a moment; then, to our great surprise, he held him out for Crookshanks to sniff. "What do you reckon?" Ron asked the cat. "Definitely an owl?" Crookshanks purred again.

"That's good enough for me," said Ron happily. "He's mine." I paused "Wait, neither of you are animagi are you?" I said, looking between the cats, they ignored me, part of me felt like they thought, "No stupid."

As we all departed and Harry left to go to Uncle Vernon, I whispered at him, "Don't worry, I'll call you on the fellytone" he laughed, "See you next Summer" I walked off, content with another year at Hogwarts, and with loads more stories to tell, even if dad couldn't understand most of them.

Come to think of it, having all these stories kind of saved my butt this year, without the memories I have and the stories that go with them I don't know how things would have turned out, so maybe telling them wouldn't be too bad every once in a while, after all, where would we all be without a good story?
