Falling on your Butt and A Papercut

(Y/N)s POV

The hall erupted into cheers from the Gryffindor table and small applause from the others, I took the hat off and gave it to Professor McGonagall who gave me a small smile, I then raced down to join my new house.

Once I reached them I was bombarded by people trying to introduce themselves, I immediately noticed the Weasleys present from Ron's stories, Fred and George, and of course Percy the prefect.

Some others were Oliver Wood, who I knew in passing from my brothers' stories, and Lee Jordan, the boy with the tarantula on the train. But I can safely say if I never had to shake another hand in my life it would be too soon.

Once the excitement died down, I watched with bated breath to see if my friends could join me. I was joined by Lavender Brown first, she seemed nice, Seamus Finnigan was next, he was very cheerful.

When Hermione's name was called for her sorting, I began to sweat a little, remembering what she said about Ravenclaw being acceptable, but even still I hoped she could join me in Gryffindor.

When the hat named Gryffindor, I cheered along with everyone else at my table, perhaps a little too enthusiastically, after all I hoped we could be friends. When she got to the table, I gave her a thumbs up for encouragement, she beamed at me with her teeth on full display so I would call it a success.

When Neville was called he was a bit clumsy on his way there so fell over, "It must be nerves" I thought, he was sorted into Gryffindor as well, I was over the moon for him so I tried to clap loudly so he knew. Although he had to make two trips to the table after forgetting the hat was on his head.

When Malfoy was called I did the opposite of what I had been and prayed he would be sent as far away from me as possible, "Preferably to a different school" I thought, although only half my wish was granted as he was sorted into Slytherin.

As Harry was called the hall went into a frenzy of whispers and some people, most noticeably Fred and George were craning their necks to see him. For once (Y/N) was happy Harry was so famous, maybe people would forget about what happened earlier and focus on Harry rather than him.

"GRYFFINDOR" was what shook (Y/N) out of his thoughts, and a chant begun, something along the lines of "We got Potter", led by Fred and George Weasley obviously. I was ecstatic, so now all that was left was Ron and I wasn't worried about him being in another house.

I put my arm on Harry's shoulder and winked cheekily with my tongue out for good measure, trying to tell him not to worry after I noticed he had crossed his fingers under the table. Of course, I was right, and as Ron slumped into the chair next to Harry, I was grinning from ear to ear, surrounded by my friends.

Dumbledore gave a speech, it was very odd, he looked mental at first, but then I noticed all the food that was in front of me, I quickly forgot about the speech and went to stuffing my face, I tried a mint humbug, not a fan. I was pleasantly happy and filling my plate with (F/F) when Nearly Headless Nick gave a demonstration, and then suddenly, I wasn't very hungry anymore.

Once dessert was over and Neville had told a brilliant story about his great uncle, Dumbledore gave his final words, something about a corridor, and that nobody could go into the forest, that was disappointing, I was looking forward to exploring it.

Then after I sang along as best as I could to the school song, it was off to bed and I for one welcomed it. Percy led us to our dormitory, after a quick scuffle with a poltergeist, when we arrived, I gave Bones a quick scratch and opened her cage, collapsed into my new bed, she climbed beside me and let sleep overtake me.

The next week went by very fast. I met a bunch of teachers I liked, Professors McGonagall, Flitwick and Quirrell to name a few, I found out I was excellent at Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts, or anything spell based really. For the first time in my life I was good at something, this must have been what it felt like when my Brother played Quidditch or rode a broom.

I had made a slight error when I entered my first class with Professor McGonagall, I was late as I had gotten lost, I ended up in a girls toilet at one point, but a very helpful ghost gave me directions, once she stopped sobbing.

Professor McGonagall made a comment about transfiguring me into a map, to which I answered "I'd give you a papercut if you did" I don't know why I did it, my hand clamped over my mouth the second I said it as I muttered sorry, I practically jumped into my seat as everyone tried to stifle their giggles. She gave me a very stern look, but I swore I saw the corners of her mouth twitch.

After my mishap I told myself I would work extra hard to make up for it no matter how boring it seemed. I was wrong It was brilliant. By the end of our first Transfiguration lesson only Hermione and I had done anything to the matches we were given to turn into needles. Mine was a greyish colour, hers was very sharp.

Of course, I had sent owls to Mum to let her know how everything was going, she hadn't replied yet though, probably busy with work. I had Potions for the first time today and I was excited, Mum loved potions so I'm sure it had to be fun.

I was wrong, very wrong, the subject was fun but the teacher was horrible, he picked on Harry constantly, Snape gave a speech at the beginning but it got me hooked immediately, "Bottle fame, brew glory, even put a stopper in death" his eyes flickered to me for half a second.

He then picked on Harry again, asking him obscure questions, for each of them Hermione put her hand up. I also put my hand up for the few I knew, eager to show my ability, but also to try and give Harry a break.

I could tell Harry was getting annoyed and eventually he answered back to Snape "I don't know, I think Hermione does though" I snickered at this, Snape gave me a quick glare. I immediately started to copy down what he had asked Harry as a note to get the answers later.

Luckily, I didn't have to wait long as Snape gave the answers, I jotted them down as he said them. He gave me a look as I basically pressed my nose to my parchment to avoid eye contact. "Follow your classmates' example and take notes."

The rest of the class went well, I managed to brew a potent cure for boils potion, although Neville had another incident, I tried my best to make the points up that Harry had lost but it didn't work, Snape said my potion was acceptable and moved on, I was exhausted afterwards.

Harry had politely asked me if I wanted to visit Hagrid after, I saw no reason to say no, so we headed down to his hut, I met Fang the boarhound, he liked me a lot, as soon as I was in the room he was all over me, licking my face and whimpering if I didn't pet him, he was a big softie, honestly I was more of a cat person but I loved animals in general.

I was finally introduced to Hagrid formally, "Tall one, aren' yeh" he said after I introduced myself "Mum said I've just had my growth spurt early, besides, I could say the same to you" I smiled back, and he let out a loud laugh.

"So you're (L/N)'s eh?" He said, his hand stroking his beard as he grinned, looking at me as I nodded. He knew, I could tell, as soon as my name came up a hint of sadness was in his eyes, then he said, "Down Fang, you great oaf." and that was him trying to change the subject.

We made small talk for a few hours and he fed us rock cakes that were nice, if you could gnaw through them, then Harry mentioned something about Gringotts and we were on our way, though a silver lining was that Harry and Ron gave me the rest of their cakes.

(Y/N)'s POV

Over the next few days it was announced that the Slytherins and Gryffindors were to be sharing flying lessons with Madam Hooch, this made me nervous, a point that Malfoy picked up on quick, he constantly told loud stories about his time on a broom, making several mentions of almost falling off, while making sideways glances at me.

I was sat at the table nibbling on some toast lost in my own thoughts when the morning post arrived, Neville was sent something, to be honest I wasn't paying attention as I was too busy reciting a spell in my head in case anything went wrong. I practiced the movements over and over, careful to get it perfect, but I knew I was, I always did now.

Eventually though, I just lost interest at that as well and to be honest I was simply staring at my wand, it was simple, Alder wood, Dragon heartstring, 12 inches. The same as my brothers.

When I got it, the day I got Bones, I remember Mr Ollivander saying, "I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr Bogwood I'm sure you will do him proud." This was why my mother had insisted I buy a pet next, to cheer me up.

Ron's POV

This was wicked, Neville's Gran had bought him a Remembrall, they were super rare, I wonder if it will do him any good. Malfoy snatched it, but McGonagall sorted him out before I had an excuse to give him a good dig.

I quickly ate all the food on my plate and got ready for the day, it was flying lessons today, I'm sure it would be fun, Charlie was great at Quidditch so I'm sure I would be too, so flying lessons were pointless for a pro like me. I knew Harry was nervous about showing himself up, but I doubt he would. I'm just hoping that prat Malfoy falls off his broom.

I stood up ready to get going when I saw (Y/N) sitting there mouthing something to himself and waving his wand around, I decided to leave him, he could come when he was ready. I hope he would be ok with flying lessons, but he might not be up to it.

We made our way onto the field and there were brooms lined up in rows, Hooch explained what we were doing, and I was a bit disappointed, we weren't babies and flying a broom was easy. Whatever, we lined up next to our brooms.

I saw (Y/N) start his way over to one, Hooch stopped him and asked if he was "Ok" with the lesson, he nodded, she gently slapped his cheek twice playfully and said "That a boy" and continued, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it.

The rest of the lesson went by fast, we all screamed "UP" at our brooms, looking over, the know it all was struggling almost as much as Neville, it serves her right. We were sitting there for ages with no success except Harry and Malfoy, I knew I would be next, I mean if Malfoy did it, I could. So, I took a deep breath and shouted "UP!"

(Y/N)s POV

I was snapped out of my thoughts by a loud "THWACK!". Immediately I thought the worst but after hearing "Shuddup" I saw Ron had hit himself in the nose with his broom and Harry was laughing at him, this brought a smile to my face and I let out a chuckle.

Focusing on my broom for the first time properly, I said "UP", it flew into my hand, of course it did. Why would I have an excuse not to get on one?. I could hardly go up to Madam Hooch and say, "My mummy told me not to."

Sure, she might excuse me based on the circumstances, but I would never live it down, especially with the Slytherins present. So, I followed our next instructions and mounted the broom.

This was when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye, Neville had kicked off too early and was slowly rising on his broom. My heart sank, my stomach knotted, and I felt like I was going to be sick, it reminded me of the Sorting Hat. No, this was not happening, not while I'm here.

Neville had slipped off his broom, but I already had my wand out, I was ready, I wouldn't let my friend get hurt, so with practiced precision I shouted "Arresto Momentum!" pain shot up my arm but I didn't care.

Neville come to a sudden stop inches from the ground and then dropped as I couldn't hold the spell any longer. I ran over to him to check if he was ok, he was unconscious but he looked fine. Madam Hooch came striding over.

"Poor boy, must have fainted, I will take him to the hospital wing to be sure," then she looked over at me "You boy, are coming with me as well, to Professor Dumbledore's office." This was met with jeering from the Slytherins and gasps from the Gryffindors.

I followed, at this point I didn't care anymore, if Neville was ok then I'm fine with any punishment. She had a stern warning for the rest of the class and then we left.

What happened next was a lot of walking and a lot of uncomfortable silence that I wished I could forget, first we dropped off Neville, who I had the pleasure of carrying, not that it was that hard there were just lots of stairs.

Madam Pomfrey got mad for "Wasting her time" so I'm sure he was ok. Next thing I knew I was waiting outside Dumbledore's office while Madam Hooch was inside explaining what had happened. As she left, I was called in.

"Good Evening Mr Bogwood" said Dumbledore in his soft voice, a hint of kindness remained. "Its (L/N) now actually" I corrected. "Ah, your mother's name, I will make the necessary arrangements to change it" he said as if reminding himself already.

"Am I being expelled?" I asked hoping to see the answer in his eyes, but they remained a mystery behind his glasses. "No, my dear boy, no I simply wanted to ask you a few questions to satisfy my curiosity."

A wave of relief washed over me; a breath I didn't know I was holding released itself "But Madam Hooch looked awfully cross" I said in confusion. "Yes, at the loss of another school broom, but she was rather pleased at your performance young man."

"Although I would like to remind you not to use your wand during lesson times" he said with a smirk. "I was simply wondering how you, a first year, know such high-level magic, and to an extent that you can perform it at a moment's notice?" he said sitting at his desk and gesturing me to do the same.

As I sat down, I answered " I've been practicing it since I was nine, even before I had a wand, it was the only spell I could find that would have... " I stopped myself from finishing the sentence to avoid bursting into tears.

"I understand my boy, I expected as much, have you felt any negative side effects?" "My arm hurts a little" I said gesturing to my dominant arm. He stood up "May I" he asked, I nodded, and he lightly gripped my arm.

"Remarkable" he said after rolling up my sleeve, but I didn't see what was so remarkable it was the same as it always had been. "May I see your wand?" I handed him it, he gave it a once over and returned it.

"I think you should start asking Professor Flitwick for extra lessons" he said smiling "That is, if you can handle the extra homework" he chuckled. "That will be all Mr Bo... (L/N), before you go, 20 points to Gryffindor, for calm under pressure." He said with a wink.

"Thank you, Professor" I said as I turned to leave trying not to grin too much, He called out to me before I did "Would you like a sherbet lemon?" he said extending a bowl full of them, I took one to be polite and sucked on it until I reached the common room and I thought of a devious plan, with a barely hidden smirk I stepped through the painting.

Hermione's POV

I was pacing in the dormitory, those two idiots are going to get expelled I just know it, flying on a broom when Madam Hooch specifically told us not to, Harry was an idiot, he let Malfoy get under his skin and get him into trouble.

I could forgive (Y/N), he saved Neville and while he did break the rules, he did it for a good reason. Surely the teachers knew that. I was muddled and in a flustered panic when (Y/N) came in.

I immediately ran to his side to ask him what happened, as did many others like Seamus and Ron, he looked downtrodden, he looked very upset. "Oh no" was the only thought I had. "Well that could have gone better, they said...they said, I better start packing" he paused with a catch in his throat.

I was in shock, no it can't be true, "Dumbledore wouldn't do that, would he?" I thought. I did the only thing I could think of to comfort him. I hugged him; it was a bit awkward because of his size but it was...nice.

Ron and Seamus started giggling, I didn't know what at, this wasn't funny, but I couldn't see what they could because of the hug. (Y/N) then leaned down so his mouth was level with my ear.

"Just kidding" he whispered in my ear. The closeness of his voice sending a blush to my cheeks. "YOU PRAT!" I shouted thumping his shoulder as hard as I could, tears pricking my eyes.

Seamus and Ron burst into laughter, he must have told them while we were hugging that's why they were giggling, I glared at them and they scampered. How could he worry me like that?

I know Ron and Harry don't really like me they just stuck round (Y/N), really (Y/N) was one of my only friends in Hogwarts. "Sorry I thought it would be funny, but if it makes you feel any better, I got 20 house points" he said rubbing his neck.

Then he extended his arms for another hug, probably as an apology. "I suppose that helps" I said, embracing him in another hug. "You're still a prat" He laughed "Good, I was worried"
