Black Cats and Yellow Rats

(Y/N)'s POV

It was September 1st, and by the time the (L/N)s arrived at Kings Cross it was ten minutes to the specified time on the letter. (Y/N) may have accidentally overslept, and his mother may have misplaced her floo powder, but neither would admit that to the other.

"10:50 just enough time to board" said my mother who was practically glued to my hip, fearing that I would get lost in the hubbub of people, she hurried me along looking for the impossible platform, I don't know how she managed it being as short as she was compared to me.

As we arrived at the barrier between platforms 9 and 10 my mother wore a scowl, directed at the ginger family in front of us and was clearly intended to show her annoyance at the ruckus they were causing and how they were slowing us from entering. "She's done this so many times, you'd figure she'd have it down pat by now." My mother grumbled.

A tall, gangly freckled member of the family who looked around my age and about 2-3 inches shorter than me and was clearly very nervous caught the eye of my mother and blushed crimson, his ears being the hottest red. To avoid everyone looking down on my family or seeing us as rude I introduced myself to clear the tension in the air.

Mustering up all the courage I could I stepped forward after shaking off my mother's vice like grip on my arm "Hiya, the names (Y/N) Bogwood... err (L/N) I mean, are you going to Hogwarts too?" Changing my mind on my name after a cold glare from my mother that I could feel from here, it was not the smoothest of introductions, but it would do.

"Sounds familiar, Ron Weasley, and um yeah we are" he said in a voice that sounded as nervous as I had expected as he gestured behind him. "Blimey, there is a lot of you." I said as I looked over his family, before seeing who he had meant.

It was then (Y/N) noticed another boy who was practically stuck to Ron's shadow, he had a cart of his own with a snowy owl on top but apart from that he looked normal, he stood there looking very out of his element. (Y/N) could only manage a small wave before a plump ginger woman directed the boy to the entrance to Platform 9 ¾.

This led to another awkward silence between us as the plump woman who I assumed was Ron's mother let him go next and followed him, a small girl at her side who had to be another sibling. "10:55!"

This was the exact moment that my mother saw fit to practically tackle me, she sprinted the both of us through the barrier, then we sped across the platform and she shoved my trunk and my new black cat Bones, who was in her cage, onto the train and all but threw me onto the Hogwarts Express.

"Send me an owl when you get there, and every week for a check in, make sure to stand up straight, don't neglect your studies, don't fly on any brooms, feed Bones well, be good, and do us proud" and "I can't wait to hear all about it" were the things I could make out from her rant as the train headed off, she added a bellowing " I LOVE YOU" along with a frantic wave, she disappeared from my vision as the train left the station.

I set to my new task, finding a compartment to sit in, a daunting task in this madhouse, it reminded me of St. Mungo's. On my travels I saw a number of strange things, a boy crawling on the floor mumbling the name "Trevor" as well as an older boy with a tarantula somewhere near the middle of the train, at least this was what stood out from the others all pushing past to get a compartment. But finally, I made it to a compartment that wasn't already packed to capacity.

After a timid knock I swung open the door, I was relieved to find the only two familiar faces I had on the entire train. Ron Weasley and Something Something, which was my name for the boy behind Ron at the station.

"Can I sit here?" was the only thing I managed to say through my nervousness. My head was killing me, all the noise wasn't good for my ears.

Something Something looked to Ron who grunted and shrugged and then proceeded to frantically nod in a way that reminded me of my mother. So, I then dragged my stuff into the room, scratching under Bones chin to calm her because for some reason she was fiercely hissing at Ron's lap. It then occurred to me that I didn't know the boy's name so I asked as politely as I could.

"What's your name? Sorry I didn't quite catch it on the station, I'm (Y/N) (L/N)" I asked extending my hand and taking a closer look at him. He had a thin face, green eyes, and very unkempt hair with broken glasses on his nose.

"Harry Potter" he said returning my handshake with a smile. This annoyed me, I was only trying to be nice and he had to make a joke of it.

"Oh, well if we are using made up celebrity names then I'm Merlin" I replied trying to keep cheerful. This led Ron into a round of laughter and Something Something into confusion.

"No really" he said lifting his fringe to show me the scar on his forehead. It was at this moment I realised I was an idiot, all the signs were there, why he was stumbling around the platform, why he was so quiet.

"Sorry about that" I said rubbing the back of my neck trying to be apologetic. Yet again I had made an awkward silence and a sub-par introduction.

Fortunately, we were given a break from the awkwardness because of a knock on the door followed by a woman with a trolley of sweets "Anything from the trolley dears?" she asked.

"No thanks I'm all set, said Ron pulling out... a sandwich I think, it was hard to tell but it didn't look very appetising. I shook my head when she turned to me, lastly, she looked at Harry who pulled out some Sickles and Knuts and stated proudly "we'll take the lot."

After that time flew by, we discussed a ton of different things, chocolate frogs and other sweets like cauldron cakes, from moving pictures, to pets. I had explained I got Bones from Magical Menagerie before school started.

She was named Bones because when I got her she was very skinny and my mum had made a comment about her being "Skin and bones" and the nickname stuck, it took me two weeks to get her to eat properly, and now she's as healthy as can be, but with that came an attitude problem.

She was about half the size of a regular housecat, and her fur stuck out at odd angles; but she was still a baby so mum assured me she would grow. Just not as fast as I did I hoped.

After this a round faced boy opened our door asking about a toad but to be honest (Y/N) didn't pay much attention to him. He was having trouble unlocking Bones' cage, she kept rattling it in her excitement.

After that interruption Ron showed off Scabbers the rat, who was the reason Bones was so touchy earlier, and said he knew a spell to turn him yellow and pulled out a wand that looked so old the tree it came from was probably dead by now. Growing up with magic all my life made household spells seem boring to me but for some reason the thought of a yellow rat had gained my full attention.

Hermione's POV

After trying to help Neville search for his toad for ages I went along the train compartments asking if Trevor had been seen. I made my way to a particularly noisy compartment and when I opened it, I was met with three boys who seemed to be attempting magic.

Curious I asked "Are you doing magic? Let's see it then" waiting patiently for the ginger boy's performance. As I did another boy with (H/C) hair and (E/C) eyes was practically bouncing from his seat in anticipation with wide eyes. So, I sat down beside him to look at the curious display of magic.

"Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid fat rat yellow" the ginger boy said frantically waving his wand around as if that would help him. Nothing of note changed about the rat.

"Are you sure that's a real spell? It's not a very good one" I said to voice my disappointment. A disappointment I saw on the face of the boy beside me who added.

"That was rubbish, but I'm sure you will be able to do it after we learn it at Hogwarts" his frown immediately turning into a stupid cheesy grin as he added a thumbs up for good measure. "Mums the only person I know who can do magic but she's brilliant at it and she went to Hogwarts" he said and for some reason looked very sad but just for a second.

"I've only tried some simple spells myself, but they have all worked for me, I'm the only person in my family who can do magic, so it was quite a surprise when I got my letter" "I've only tried magic I read about in textbooks, I've learnt all the set books off by heart" then I realized I hadn't introduced myself "oh and I'm Hermione Granger by the way, and you are?" I said looking at the three boys.

The loud one announced himself first "That's so cool, you must be really clever, well I'm (Y/N) (L/N) nice to meet cha" he said extending his hand which I shook and giving me another huge grin.

"He thinks I'm clever just for reading the books we've been told to; I can already tell his type" I thought. "Ron Weasley" the redhead said. "Harry Potter" said the quiet one in the corner.

This took me by surprise "Holy Cricket" I exclaimed which the loud boy followed "I know right" I then proceeded to explain how I knew so much about him from my background reading. Harry looked amazed and taken aback so I quickly changed the subject.

"Do any of you know what house you will be in? I'm hoping for Gryffindor personally, though I suppose I wouldn't mind Ravenclaw."

Then I realised the time and promptly got up with a goodbye and a reminder to change into their robes. But as I turned to leave the compartment, I heard a voice behind me.

"Do you need any help looking for Trevor, Hermione?" said (Y/N) a smile still glued to his face.

"Kind of you to ask but you need to change remember and I for one would not like to see that", this caused a faint blush to rise to my cheeks at the thought.

His smile fell and he realised his mistake, this caused him to stand up too fast in embarrassment for some reason and a red blush to invade his face "Right, yeah, stupid sorry" he said rubbing his neck.

This was when I realised how tall he was, taller than me by far. But I ignored the thought and left. But as I closed the door behind me, I heard the other two boys burst into laughter and couldn't help but let out a small giggle myself.

(Y/N)'s POV

After I embarrassed myself thoroughly to my new friend and shut up my other two, I frantically started to change in my robe, I think it would be best to follow Hermione's advice. Just as I had finished the door slid open.

I was hoping it was Hermione or the round-faced boy with good news about his poor toad. But I was let down, I was met with three boys, a pale one and two fat ones. Bones immediately let out a hiss and retreated back into her cage.

"I hear Harry Potter was in this compartment is it true" he inquired, so in a poor attempt to make a joke and hopefully some new friends I answered "Yup that's me can't you tell", with a sly smirk to hold my laughter I stood up and extended my arm, making a note of how much I've done this today.

I must have looked quite the sight, I was taller than most people my age by quite a wide margin, I was quickly approaching 6 foot and had been described as "lumbering" before. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep up my joke and burst into laughter adding "Just kidding" I then introduced myself and made an active effort not to shake anybody's hand this time.

"Hilarious, well if he's not here then we will be off or is it you then" he said pointing to Harry who announced himself "The names Draco Malfoy, this is Crabbe and Goyle" he said gesturing to the two boys behind him.

This caused Harry to glance at them and Ron to snicker. This seemed to annoy Malfoy, who made a comment about Ron's family "No need to ask who you are, a Weasley no doubt, more kids then they know what to do with," he turned to Harry after gesturing to Ron and (Y/N).

"You will soon learn that some wizarding families are better than others Potter" "Don't go making friends with the wrong sort, I can help you with that" he said extending his hand. Harry returned with a quick "I think I can figure out the wrong sort for myself thanks", this made me chuckle.

But then Malfoy made a passing remark about Harrys parents, I was furious, so I stood up to defend my new friend, as I did the two goons stepped forward. "Do you want to say that again?" I said as I tried to look intimidating, Malfoy leaned back to look up at me with a snort.

"Trying to look intimidating while holding a kitten" he said looking at Bones who was in her cage in my right hand and was pawing and hissing at Malfoy, claws out. She was very touchy today. I had to hold the cage shut with my free hand.

This was about the time Goyle reached towards some of Ron's sweets and was bitten on the finger by Scabbers. Chaos ensued which ended with Scabbers hitting a train window spread eagled and then promptly falling back to sleep.

With that Malfoy turned on his heel and left taking his hired muscle with him. I was still annoyed though, the Weasleys seem like lovely people from what I saw, and the stories Ron had told, so someone badmouthing them made me mad. What made me even angrier was the low blow towards Harry. I stroked Bones through her cage to calm myself down.

Hermione then slid open the door and stormed into the compartment complaining about fighting and how loud we were being, to be honest (Y/N) payed it no mind as he was playing with Bones, trying to calm down, that was until he heard his name being mentioned.

"Follow (Y/N)'s example and get changed the both of you, the conductor said we will arrive soon" she said, as she left, I followed to give the others their privacy. As I was following Bones became unruly in her cage. "It's ok princess, I'm right here." I cooed, trying to soothe her.

I think she didn't like being cramped and all the people running the carriage didn't help. Hermione noticed this and asked, "What's that in your hand?" with her bossy voice, it sounded more like a command then a question. In my nervousness I proceeded to blurt out "My kitten" much louder than I meant to.

This was when everything I knew about the world turned upside down, upon seeing Bones in my hand, Hermione changed completely, she immediately rushed to the cage and began showing a little too much affection to Bones then necessary.

It was full of squeals and awws, and a surprising amount of baby voice. But Bones being the drama queen she was, thoroughly enjoyed herself. Calming down immediately and rolling onto her back so her belly could be pet.

Then luckily the conductors voice boomed through the train telling us to leave our possessions, this was when Hermione caught herself and went back to normal, a blush spreading to her cheeks.

I then proceeded to say bye to Bones and told her to be good and that I would see her later. With that out of the way I met Neville, the boy with the missing toad, he seemed nice enough but was a bit clumsy, the train stopped and then we stepped off.
