Bets Placed and Hands Interlaced

Hermione's POV

I arrived early in the day, Mum and Dad dropping me off at the Burrow and then saying their goodbyes. I was apparently the last of us to arrive, (Y/N) arriving a week prior according to his letter.

I know the Weasleys went to get Harry yesterday. After a hushed greeting with all the Weasleys who were awake, Me and Ginny set about waking everyone up, apparently, we were in a hurry.

Waking Ron and Harry up was a joint effort, Ron waking with a start and covering himself, "Bloody hell" he said when he realise who had woken him, Harry was a different story, it took both me and Ginny a few seconds of coaxing to stir him.

Even when he did he was pale as a sheet and sweating, but he insisted he was fine, as always. "Hermione. Bad dream. When did you get here?" "Just now. You?" "Last night." He said, putting on his glasses.

But I couldn't find (Y/N) anywhere, I went down to ask Mrs Weasley where he was as she was making an early breakfast with Ginny's help. "He's upstairs dear, we couldn't fit him anywhere else" said Mrs Weasley with a little blush. Pointing to the room normally occupied by a ghoul.

"You'll have to go and get him Hermione" said Ginny with a smirk, I gave her a little glare, Mrs Weasley seemed to catch on and chuckled as well.

As I entered the room I heard moaning noises from a large cupboard in the corner, it had magically bound chains around it, I soon found (Y/N), sprawled out on a bed, shirtless and snoring, his hand rested next to his wand which was poking from under his pillow. Bones the cat was curled up on his legs, as I got closer, they stirred.

Bones was awake first, she saw me, casually slipped off his legs, and brushed up against mine with a tired purr, then left the room, probably to go and find Crookshanks. I shook (Y/N) awake, he sat up groggily.

"Oh no, I died in my sleep, this must be heaven. There are angels and everything! I expected it to be brighter" he said, I'm surprised he could even talk, let alone make jokes, but that didn't stop me from blushing and weakly telling him to shush, "G'morning Hermione", he swung his legs off the bed and stood up.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me! Again?" I said in shock, "Yep, mum said if I get any taller, she's checking me into St. Mungos" he said, craning his neck, easily 6'1 now, he pulled me into a firm hug, which would have been lovely, if he wasn't shirtless, I tried my best to keep my blush at bay, it didn't work. "Still sad I don't sleep naked?" he winked. "Shut up."

"Sorry, my pyjamas got gnawed on by angry gnomes yesterday, Bones has been terrorising them so they came at me with a vengeance" He said, holding a shirt with holes in it, "I'd fix it, but it's really hot up here so..." He shrugged.

"Just get dressed, we're leaving soon" He put his thumb up and set about to get ready. The Weasleys insisted that they were "Going incognito" for some reason, in case they ran into some muggles on the way I suppose, they were asking me and Harry for our opinions. We heard (Y/N) come down the stairs, in loose comfortable clothing, looking undeniably like a muggle.

"Where're Bill and Charlie and Per-Per-Percy?" said George, failing to stifle a huge yawn. "Well, they're Apparating, aren't they?" said Mrs. Weasley, heaving the large pot over to the table and starting to ladle porridge into bowls.

"So, they can have a bit of a lie-in." Mr. Weasley nodded "So they're still in bed?" said Fred grumpily, pulling his bowl of porridge toward him. "Why can't we Apparate too?"

"Because you're not of age and you haven't passed your test," snapped Mrs. Weasley. "You have to pass a test to Apparate?" Harry asked. "Oh yes," said Mr. Weasley, tucking the tickets safely into the back pocket of his jeans.

"The Department of Magical Transportation had to fine a couple of people the other day for Apparating without a license. It's not easy, Apparition, and when it's not done properly it can lead to nasty complications."

"This pair I'm talking about went and splinched themselves." He said, cringing "Splinched?" said Harry. "They left half of themselves behind," said Mr. Weasley, now spooning large amounts of treacle onto his porridge.

"So, of course, they were stuck. Couldn't move either way. Had to wait for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad to sort them out. Meant a fair old bit of paperwork, I can tell you" "Not a fan of it myself."

"So, I couldn't convince you to teach me? I've always wanted to try apparating, but there is a lot of me to get from one place to the other so I wouldn't risk it alone" (Y/N) said in a tired drawl. Mr. Weasley just chuckled, shook his head and pat him on the back.

He shrugged and went off to play with Bones before we left. Scooping up a bowl of porridge in one hand and yawning, "Thank you Mrs. Weasley" he said as he passed her giving her a one-armed hug and a kiss on the cheek.

As we went to leave, I found him doing a peek-a-boo motion to Bones, every time he covered his eyes, she pawed at his hands until he opened them again, "Boo" she would feign shock and fall over dramatically. Tail swishing back and forth.

It was only when he turned to me that he also had Crookshanks curled up on his lap. "We going?" when I nodded he sighed and gently placed a sleeping Crookshanks on the chair he was sat in.

I lingered for a moment more as he said a goodbye to Bones, she mewled at him for ages as he left, "Not for long, promise." He stroked her cheek and threw her mouse toy into the air, she chased after it as it darted away.

As we made our way to... wherever we were going, (Y/N) told me the story of how the Weasleys tried to use floo powder to go and get Harry. "-I swear to god, he sees me, grabs his arse and goes. Not again!" he chuckled.

Explaining his first interaction with Harry's cousin, who apparently mistook him for another Hogwarts half giant. And fainted, only waking up to eat some joke sweets. Which he soon came to regret.

"I wonder where he got that idea?" I said looking up at him. "6'1 isn't even that tall, he was just rude!" he defended, I chuckled, "It is if your 14" I muttered, he half glared at me and moved on.

"The boy might be sharper than he looks, we did some digging and found out mums' side of the family has some giants blood trickled in somewhere down the line" "You mothers side? But she-" "Can only win at basketball if she played with house elves? I know"

"She was fuming, saying she was cheated" we laughed. "That honestly explains a lot" I remarked. "Yeah, turns out she's the odd one" he laughed; it was such a nice sound. But something doesn't make sense, "I thought you stayed with your dad this summer."

"I did, she had to come and deliver some stuff, and give Bones some magic spell or something, because dad is allergic" Then a new voice caught our attention "Over here, Arthur!" a middle-aged man was silhouetted against the starry sky on the other side of the hilltop, under a tree. "Amos!" said Mr. Weasley, smiling as he strode over to the man who had shouted.

We followed. Mr. Weasley was shaking hands with the man, who was holding a mouldy old boot in his other hand. "This is Amos Diggory, everyone," said Mr. Weasley. Then another person dropped from a tree.

"And this strapping young lad must be Cedric" they shook hands, "Hi," said Cedric, looking around at everyone, he was an extremely handsome boy of around seventeen. He was Captain and Seeker of the Hufflepuff House Quidditch team at Hogwarts. Not that I cared.

(Y/N) walked up and introduced himself, shaking Amos's hand, "My lord" the man proclaimed, (Y/N) chuckled, "Yeah, I get that a lot" "You're (M/N) (L/N)'s boy then?" he nodded, "Wouldn't think it, I know" he smiled brightly again.

Then the moved on to Cedric, shaking his hand as well "Careful climbing trees mate, you might get struck by lightning" he said cheekily, Cedric smiled, "I've had a few close calls, so I'll take it under advisement" he half chuckled.

That was something I had always admired about (Y/N), he was never afraid of meeting new people, and of trying to make friends, he would be the first person to strike up a conversation, or to try and make someone laugh, at first I had mistaken it for confidence or cockiness, but as I got to know him better, I realised it was kindness.

After meeting (Y/N) they exchanged pleasantries. "All these yours, Arthur?" "Oh no, only the redheads," said Mr. Weasley, pointing out his children. "This is Hermione, friend of Ron's, and of course you've met (Y/N), this is Harry, another friend-" "Merlin's beard," said Amos Diggory, his eyes widening. "Harry? Harry Potter?" "Er...yeah," said Harry awkwardly.

"Ced's talked about you, of course," said Amos Diggory. "Told us all about playing against you last year. I said to him, I said, Ced, that'll be something to tell your grandchildren, that will. You beat Harry Potter!" Harry remained silent. Cedric looked slightly embarrassed.

"Harry fell off his broom, Dad," he muttered. "I told you...it was an accident." "Yes, but you didn't fall off, did you?" roared Amos genially, slapping his son on his back. "Always modest, our Ced, always the gentleman but the best man won, I'm sure Harry'd say the same, wouldn't you, eh? One falls off his broom, one stays on, you don't need to be a genius to tell which one's the better flier!"

"Tell that to the Gryffindor trophy room, we still won the Quidditch cup" challenged (Y/N), of course defending his friend, especially when it comes to falling off brooms. Amos shrugged and moved on, both Cedric and Harry looked mortified.

"Don't worry, you can leave that bit out when you tell the grandkids mate" (Y/N) laughed and trudged on, patting Cedric on the back. "Must be nearly time," said Mr. Weasley quickly, pulling out his watch again.

"Do you know whether we're waiting for any more, Amos?" "No, the Lovegoods have been there for a week already and the Fawcetts couldn't get tickets," said Mr. Diggory. As we all took hold of the boot, Mr. Weasley counted down to something. "Three . . ." muttered Mr. Weasley, one eye still on his watch, "two . . . one . . ."

(Y/N) was grinning wildly "This is my favourite-" My whole body jerked, it was like all the air as sucked out of my lungs, all I could hear was wind rushing past my ears and (Y/N) cackling and giggling the whole way.

My feet slamming to the ground rather harshly, pushing me to the ground, knocking the wind out of me even more. "-bit" I looked up. Mr. Weasley, Mr. Diggory, (Y/N) and Cedric were still standing, though looking very windswept; everybody else was on the ground, (Y/N) was already standing over me, offering me a hand up which I gladly took, he pulled me up with no effort at all. "How did you do that?"

"Hermione, I'm 14 years old and I'm 6'1, I've been learning to keep my balance since I was eight. Plus, I've had practice with portkeys before, it will take more than a little wind to knock me over." he said, flattening my windswept hair with a smile.

The second they heard this, Fred and George tackled him to the ground, "Says who!" He groaned "Guys I was trying to be cool!" he whispered angrily, writhing and kicking at them, which eventually devolved into wrestling. "Boys" said Ginny behind me. But we both couldn't help but laugh at them.

"Hermione, Ginny, tag in, tag in!" (Y/N) said, reaching out a desperate hand to us as as they dragged him away,  we started to walk away, leaving him to the twins' wrath. "Prat" I smiled.

We finally found a tent after Mr Weasley made his way to the right people, when we found them, I asked a question, "Mr Weasley, you said the Lovegoods are here right?" he nodded, "Do you know where? I'd like to go and see them, talk to Luna and stuff" he gave me an odd look. "No can do (Y/N), I'd prefer If you stayed close, don't want you getting lost, especially on your own"

"Well, to be fair, I'm not exactly hard to miss" He pursed his lips "Even still, I promised your mother I would keep an eye on you, so you didn't go wondering" he said in an uncommon sternness.

"Please! I'll be quick I promise!" I begged. He let out a sigh, "Fine, you have half an hour, I think they said they would be that way, here take this, something I got from work" he handed me a watch, "A muggle item we confiscated from an old witch, It will tell you when to be back by" I nodded, of course I knew how a watch worked. He pointed in a direction and I sprinted off

It took me a few minutes to find the tent, but once I saw it, I knew it was Luna's, it was multi-coloured and designed with several swirling patterns, I half knocked, it didn't do much, as the tent was fabric, but none the less someone came out of the tent door.

"Good Morning, how may I help you on this fine day?" he said cheerily. He was a tall man, a bit spindly, with long white hair, but then again who am I to call someone spindly, he was also wearing a strange looking necklace.

"Sorry to intrude sir. I'm looking for the Lovegood's" "Oh yes, how rude of me Xenophilius Lovegood, a pleasure, are you a fan?" I looked at him a bit confused, then I remembered Luna's family wrote the Quibbler "No, I mean yes, but that's not why I'm here, My name is (Y/N) (L/N) I was wondering if I could see Luna?"

"Oh, I should have known, she did mention her friend called (Y/N) was remarkably-" "Tall?" He shook his head "Polite" He finished and disappeared into the tent, "Polite? Me?" I thought, then quickly let it go. A few seconds later, out stepped Luna, wearing a dress that consisted of both the Bulgarian and Irish flags in interlocking patterns.

"Good Morning Miss Lovegood" I bowed, she giggled "Hello (Y/N)" she said, in her constantly dreamy sounding voice. After some idle chatting she invited me inside, which was just as colourful as the exterior.

"Yeah, I'd thought I'd come see you, we didn't talk much last year" "That's ok, that just means whenever we do talk, its more special" she smiled, I had always admired her way of looking at things.

"Well, I promise, this year will be different, no Dementors to stop us now" I said, we continued to chat until the watch decided to start vibrating, it was gradually heating up. "I'm sorry Luna, I'm going to have to leave, I will see you at school though I promise" she nodded, and with another hug, I left, I took the watch off, it set on fire as soon as I did, turning to ash, "Single use then."

Hermione POV

(Y/N) came back just as we settled into the tent, complaining about a watch, "Where have you been?" I asked him curiously, "I went to see Luna" he said smiling, "oh" was all I could manage to say, I didn't know they were that close. Ginny nudged me, raising an eyebrow, "You ok?" I quickly nodded.

We went exploring after that, we ran into Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas. After saying goodbye to them Ron went to drool over the Bulgarian Keeper or something, we were trying to push through the crowds of people but (Y/N) was struggling, unable to dart between people like the rest of us could. Eventually he got frustrated.

"Hermione, can you do me a favour" he said, I swear I could see him blushing, "Yes?" he held out his hand, "Just so...um, we don't get separated?" he asked. I quickly nodded and took his hand. We spent the rest of our time holding hands, even though Ginny found it hilarious, constantly giggling, she mouthed to me "He's so smooth" I just glared at her.

When we got back Ludo Bagman and Mr. Weasley were betting on the outcome of the match "Oh... go on then," said Mr. Weasley. "Let's see...a Galleon on Ireland to win?" "A Galleon?" Ludo Bagman looked slightly disappointed but recovered himself. "Very well, very well...any other takers?"

"We'll bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles, three Knuts," said Fred as he and George quickly pooled all their money, "that Ireland wins, but Viktor Krum gets the Snitch. Oh and we'll throw in a fake wand."

"Excellent! I haven't seen one that convincing in years! I'd pay five Galleons for that!" Percy froze in an attitude of stunned disapproval. "Boys," said Mr. Weasley under his breath, "I don't want you betting...That's all your savings...Your mother-" "Don't be a spoilsport, Arthur!" boomed Ludo Bagman, rattling his pockets excitedly.

"They're old enough to know what they want! You reckon Ireland will win but Krum'll get the Snitch? Not a chance, boys, not a chance...I'll give you excellent odds on that one...We'll add five Galleons for the funny wand, then, shall we..."

Mr. Weasley looked on helplessly as Ludo Bagman whipped out a notebook and quill and began jotting down the twins' names. "Cheers," said George, taking the slip of parchment Bagman handed him and tucking it away carefully.

(Y/N) said "One second" and strolled up to the man "I'll bet on the same but let's say... 50 Galleons" Bagman was basically drooling at this, (Y/N) paid him a few Galleons, "I can pay the rest later, its in my tent, I'll bring it later if I lose"

Bagman grinned widely and said "Good" and gave (Y/N) a ticket. "Thanks" he said politely and strolled up to me, "What did you do that for?" I asked him, "Fun" he shrugged, "Can you even pay him if you lose?"

"Of course, on an unrelated note, can I borrow 50 Galleons? I'm skint" I was in utter disbelief. "NO!" he sighed, "Damn" he shrugged again, he was giving me a headache. "Don't worry, I've been losing bets to the twins for years, jammy gits, I trust their instincts" he grabbed my hand again as we made our way to the top.

"(B/N) always wanted to go to one of these" he said absentmindedly as we made our way up the stands, "Never got tickets for it though, always said he'd play in one someday." He looked down "I'd always said I'd bet on him to lose" he said with a sad smile, he chuckled, "Mum would always say the same thing. 'Good idea, either way, we make some money.'"

"Suppose this is the next best thing, eh?" he said, gaining some cheer back. It didn't even occur to me that being here might make him think of his brother, but of course it made sense. Either way, this was I think the first time he had ever spoken about him to me.

Mr. Weasley kept shaking hands with people who were obviously very important wizards. Percy jumped to his feet so often that he looked as though he were trying to sit on a hedgehog. When Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic himself, arrived.

Percy bowed so low that his glasses fell off and shattered. Highly embarrassed, he repaired them with his wand and thereafter remained in his seat, throwing jealous looks at Harry, whom Cornelius Fudge had greeted like an old friend.

We also met a rather peculiar house elf called Winky, who was dressed in a tea towel, she was a servant of Barty Crouch, and it was clear she was very scared of being here, she was afraid of heights.

I went to shake her hand with the one I had free, she just looked at me confused, so I awkwardly put it down, (Y/N) looked over my shoulder, saw her and gave a cheery smile and a wave, she just put her head down, but I heard her make a little noise out of happiness, as he leaned over I realised our hands were still interlaced, and it was hard not to do the same.

As Harry and Fudge made their rounds we were met with some unfriendly faces "ah, and here's Lucius!" We all turned quickly. Edging along the second row to three still-empty seats right behind Mr. Weasley were none other than Lucius Malfoy; his son, Draco; and a woman who must have been Draco's mother.

"Ah, Fudge," said Mr. Malfoy, holding out his hand as he reached the Minister of Magic. "How are you? I don't think you've met my wife, Narcissa? Or our son, Draco?" "How do you do, how do you do?" said Fudge, smiling and bowing to Mrs. Malfoy.

As the minister had trouble introducing the Bulgarian Minister of Magic (Y/N) leaned over and whispered something to the twins who giggled and passed him something, then he stood up, "NO!"

I tried to stop him from causing trouble. Then something had happened that was so confusing, for a second I thought I was seeing things (Y/N) walked up to the Malfoys and greeted them politely.

"Nice to meet you ma'am" he politely bowed to Mrs. Malfoy, who half smiled, half sneered, I looked round, everyone was staring at him like he'd just spontaneously combusted, including Draco and Mr. Malfoy.

"Is your arm better Draco?" he asked in a sickly-sweet voice, Draco was so perplexed he just stood dead still, "Good." Then, as if it was second nature, he just slumped back into his chair next to me.

"What was that!" said Harry, (Y/N) started laughing, "Wait" was all he said, we turned back, only to see the Malfoys all looking for something, then Lucius Malfoy growled and had to rush off, all while Narcissa smacked a small sweet out of Draco's hand.

(Y/N) pulled out three pairs of Omnioculars for us to use to view the game, Harry only having to buy one pair for himself. for a second I was confused, he said he didn't have any money, then I realised. "Wow these things are impressive" said (Y/N) smirking.

(Y/N)'s POV

"Slimy git" Ron muttered at Draco as we all turned to face the field again. Ludo Bagman charged into the box. "Everyone ready?" he said. "Minister ready to go?" "Ready when you are, Ludo," said Fudge comfortably.

Ludo whipped out his wand, directed it at his own throat, and said "Sonorus!" and then spoke over the roar of sound that was now filling the packed stadium; his voice echoed over them, booming into every corner of the stands.

"Ladies and gentlemen . . . welcome! Welcome to the final of the four hundred and twenty-second Quidditch World Cup!" The spectators screamed and clapped. Thousands of flags waved, adding their discordant national anthems to the racket.

"Bloody hell, they brought Veela!" Ron said excitedly, using my newly appropriated Omnioculars to get a much better view of everything important. I rose to my feet, compelled to walk to the edge "If I jumped down there... it would impress them, right? Yeah." I thought, Hermione grabbed me and forced me back to my seat, it was only then that I realised I was a lot closer to the edge then I thought.

Next were the leprechauns, who made it rain Leprechaun Gold, which had no value, but I still had a blast watching their performance. I watched as Bagman was desperately trying to grab any coin he could, I was a bit wary after that. But I quickly forgot all about it. As Cornelius Fudge shouted "Let the match. BEGIN"
