β˜…ε½‘Their Endings Are Our Beginningsε½‘β˜…

"Your majesty! There is no sign of the knight, but we found this Yōkai fighting a demon. What should we do with him?"

"Leave him here... I will deal with him... You go find my knight! I will not give in to despair!" The people holding the bruised and broken fox let go and let him crumple to the floor as they left the room. "So there's a rumor that your mind is supposed to be immortal. No matter what pain you're put through. You choose when to die. Is this true?" The demon king asked. The blonde spat at him. "Feisty one, eh? No matter. I may not give in to it, but despair will reach you soon. It always does. When you realize there is no escaping it, so you give in and adapt to your new life. Adaptability is survivability. You will submit to despair and me. I can feel it." He was spat at again. He stopped and wiped his face before taking the Yōkai to his room.

And that's where they were sitting. Every day in the middle of the week, they would read stories together. The fox deity could make figures and show the story like a moving picture. It took power, but there was nothing else to do with it. He could do nothing but submit to King Tooru Oikawa's wishes. Until the time was right, Atsumu Miya the Fox Yōkai was a servant to the demon king.

"Maki!"

"Yes my lord?" A girl with black hair and a red dress ran in and bowed.

"Oh sorry, my dear. Wrong Maki. Thank you for coming immediately though."

"Of course your majesty."

"You're dismissed. Please bring me Hanamaki." The king said as his hand went to the head of the Yōkai sitting on the floor next to his throne. "How are you feeling, darling?" Oikawa was not expecting him to answer. There were rumors that Yōkai could not speak. Others that they did not understand the languages of the rest of the world.

"Considering the fact I'm stuck here next to ya like a dog forever, I'd say not good." The brunette was shocked. There was usually just a growl from the blonde, but a full sentence was shocking, to say the least.

"You can speak?!" Atsumu sighed.

"'Course I can speak! Ya actually believed that I couldn't?!"

"Well... No one has ever talked to a Yōkai before... I can't believe that I'm the first..." Oikawa was surprised and proud of himself for a split second.

"Yer not." The previous emotions he had disappeared. "How do ya think we learned who ya are? Or about the war? Why else would we be helping the humans?"

"Because my father killed hundreds of you..?"

The Yōkai paused. He was surprised. "No, he didn't. He saved hundreds of us. Why do ya think I'm still here? I don't like ya, the food sucks, and the only entertainment I get is seeing ya squirm and have people try to restrain me when I growl at ya. No. I'm still here because yer dad used to be cool. Yer about half of him. Don't worry though! I really don't like him after what ya all did to the eagle clan. This war is also not helping yer case."

"You... You really don't get it..."

"Don't get what? That yer race is a bunch of cowards hiding behind yer wall while ya make the races ya captured go out and fight yer war for ya? That ya have no idea what it's like on the front line of battle? That the Demon King that is so revered and feared isn't actually a real demon? No, I think I got the picture." Oikawa hit Atsumu.

"SHUT UP! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!" Atsumu flinched. He expected something, but Oikawa never raised his voice or hit him before. Not even when he refused to talk, eat, or sleep for 2 days. He was always patient.

"S-Sorry... I-I didn't mean..."

"YOU DIDN'T MEAN TO HIT THAT DEEP?! YOU DIDN'T MEAN TO GET ME MAD?! WHAT?! WHAT YŌKAI?!" Atsumu took a deep breath and grabbed Oikawa's hand. He did a spell that made him calm down.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to get ya that angry. I was upset." The Yōkai let go of the demon's hand.

"I-I'm sorry for hitting you... Are you alright?" The blonde nodded and smiled. The doors opened as Oikawa sat down, a pink-haired figure with one horn came in and bowed. The doors shut behind him loudly.

"Sir! You wanted to see me?"

"How is the search going?"

"We haven't found him yet sire. But we will soon! The posters are everywhere. People know who he is and they know the reward. He will come home."

"Thank you. Now come up here and hug me!" The strawberry-haired male looked to make sure the doors were closed before getting up and hugging his old friend.

"Makki, we will find them. Wherever Iwa~Chan is, Matsun most likely is too. It's either that or Matsun is in a library. Have we checked all of those?"

"Not all of them." Hanamaki laughed. "But we're working on it. He's obviously got his head in a book no matter where he is."

"Mhm! That's our Matsun!"

"Then Iwa obviously has his picture."

"Always! He took it to battle with him every time. He would never forget our family." Oikawa smiled softly.

The Yōkai was confused. Even with their friends missing, the king and general had a cheery attitude about them. Like nothing was wrong. It made Atsumu think that maybe the demons weren't that bad after all. Maybe, they were just as emotional as the other races. But no matter what, Atsumu knew one thing for sure. What he thought about the demons, was very wrong. They were not monsters. The outside was different from what was truly inside. They had their determination held tightly to their heart.

"Your majesty?" Atsumu and Oikawa were in Oikawa's room. They were doing their usual midweek storytime.

"Yes, my dear?" The blonde loved it when the Demon King called him "my dear." It made him feel important and special.

"Can we just talk today instead of the story?"

"As you wish."

"Thanks... Who is Iwa~Chan?"

"I-I... Iwa~Chan was my best friend... He left me a few weeks ago... The day you came actually... It hurt a lot... But then I met you! You've honestly helped me a lot. Thank you." Oikawa's eyes were sad. Like some part of him was missing. "Anyways! What about you? You know just about everything about me! I don't even know your name! Much less anything about you!"

"Well someone as lowly as I really shouldn't have to be known by the Demon King!" Oikawa laughed. People would normally grovel and say they weren't worth it, but this felt different.

"Come on I really wanna know! At least tell me your name!" The Yōkai sighed. It was the least he could give him. He could even give a fake name if he wanted.

"My name is Atsumu Miya, the firstborn son of the king of the Yōkai... I have a twin brother and my whole kingdom thinks I'm dead..."

"I-I... I'm so sorry Tsu..." Atsumu chuckled softly. Tears were welling up in his eyes.

"It's okay... They were always looking for a way to get rid of me... Samu would be a much better king than me anyways... They just needed something to get me out of the way... I left my subconscious the other day and saw that they weren't looking for me... They weren't even gonna give me a funeral... They just quit on me..." The tears started falling. "God Samu's a jerk! Of course, he's gonna be king! He gets what he wants, no matter who he has to go through! He sucks! And of course, he's the favorite! No regard for your son who is actually next in line! Sometimes I'm glad I left..."

"No!"

"No?"

"You can't be glad you left your family! They love you! Anyone who leaves their family leaves the one group of people who will love them unconditionally!"

"Oikawa please calm down. I said sometimes..." Atsumu sighed. "I love my brother... He means the world to me and I would do anything to make him happy or keep him safe... Don't lose your head over this..."

"You need to go see him! Go see your family!"

"No! I want to stay with you!"

"But your family! I'm sure your brother misses you!" Atsumu's eyes started to tear up.

"No! He doesn't miss me! My life has been one horrible thing after another and it's all his fault! I've been blamed for so many stupid things that he's done! I can't go back!" Oikawa hugged the crying Yōkai. He had been through so much that the king had no clue about.

"I know... Your life has been a series of unfortunate events... But we need family. Family is the most important thing."

"I don't want to leave you!"

"I know... But has your family ever said I love you?" Atsumu nodded.

"Before we had to be worried about the war and who would be king and stuff."

"Do you know what I love you means?"

"What?"

"I love you means you're never ever ever getting rid of me. You're mine forever and I'm not letting go. No matter what happens, I will always be here." Oikawa held the Yōkai tightly and kissed his forehead. They stayed like that for a moment before there was a knock at the door. "One second." Oikawa kissed Atsumu's forehead again. "I'll be back soon."

The Demon King got up and went out the door. Before him, he saw a sight he hoped he'd never have to see. His best friend was cut and bruised. He was more worried than he ever had been but still kept a strong face.

"Sire, we're under attack. They are trying to get into the wall." The general informed him.

"Alright. Hanamaki, go get healed up. Maki split the armies between the gates. Have Kindaichi take the West Gate. When Hanamaki gets healed, he will take the South Gate. You take the East Gate."

"What about the North Gate sire?"

"I will take care of the North Gate." Oikawa snapped and servants brought him the king's armor and sword. He would take what Atsumu said to heart. He would learn what it's like on the front line of battle. There were looks of confusion and worry from the others in the room. "Trust me. It will all be okay. To your posts! Our number one priority is keeping the city and the citizens! This comes above all else! Now go!" The room was empty except Oikawa. He wrote a short note with magic.

The doors of the throne room burst open. "How are our casualties?"

"From our original 10,000, there are 200 missing, 300 dead, and 400 wounded."

"Find everyone who led a gate and bring them here."

"We're all here sir."

"Where is Kindaichi?"

There was a moment of silence in the whole room. "He didn't make it sire."

Tears rolled down the Demon King's face. "N-No he has to just be missing!"

"Your majesty, we have his body." He didn't want to believe it.

"Oikawa~San, I'm having trouble with this bow. Can you help me?" The black-haired demon came over. He was around 8 or 9. This was before the demons were reunited under Oikawa's family.

"Aw! Of course!" Oikawa took the bow from him and examined it. "I see your problem. See this bow is one of the hardest to operate. It takes strength that you don't have yet. But you'll get there!"

"You're amazing Oikawa~San! Someday, I want to be just like you."

"Well, I'm not sure you'll be exactly like me but-"

"SHITTYKAWA GIVE THE BOY SOME HOPE!" A small rock was thrown at the back of his head.

"OW! Why are you so mean to me Iwa~Chan?!"

"I'm just gonna go..."

"Wait Kindaichi don't leave me here!"

"Dads are fighting again!" The onion head yelled as he ran off.

Oikawa wiped his tears as Hanamaki began to speak. "Sire, do you hear the people?"

"What?"

"Do you hear the people singing?"

Oikawa heard it. It was soft, but it soon grew louder as he went out to his window and opened it, seeing the people at the wall, in a circle lining the whole thing.

"No, no, no! You can't handle this! Oohoohoohoo oohoohoohoo hoohoo!" That was repeated multiple times. The whole city joined in eventually. It was like a warning to the people attacking. "You cannot handle our full power. Retreat or be destroyed."

"Did we capture any of their leaders?"

"Two sire."

"Bring them here."

"Correction sire! Three."

Oikawa turned to go to his throne. Then he remembered Atsumu and ran to go save him. He flipped the lever and opened the door, running in and hugging Atsumu.

"Oikawa!" Atsumu hugged back. "Yer here! I got so scared! Heard singing but I couldn't go outside! What happened?!"

"Nothing my darling. I'm here now. There's no reason to fear." They held each other tightly. They didn't want to let go. They wanted to stay there forever. It was warm. It was loving. It was everything they needed in that moment. The world disappeared and they were just together.

"I need to go interrogate people. Would you come with me?" The Demon King offered his hand to the Yōkai. He took it.

"I would follow you anywhere." They smiled and left the room, together at last. Together forever.
