Words we never said...

Shehry’s POV:

I could tell that she was really surprised.

“Ab kuch bol bhi do..”, I smiled, letting go of her hand as the waiter placed the dishes on our table and left.

“Shehry yeh..I mean yeh ring, matlab oh my god I don’t know what to say, I mean how…”, she wanted to say so much, but words just didn’t seem to come out of her mouth.

I smiled and said, “Amna, its okay!”

“But Shehry…why?”, she questioned me with her teary eyes.

“Because I love you Amna!”

Those words brought an instant smile to her face, as she stared at the glaring ring on her finger.

Our eyes locked across the table and everything around us seemed to have faded away. We were in a universe all on our own, lost in the depths of each other’s eyes with a sense of longing to escape forever into that universe around us.

“Ab khaein?”, I broke the silence, and she nodded.

I watched the her as she ate. Calmly bringing each bite to her lips. Her face amazingly expressive. Every bite seemed as if she was tasting for the first time.

She then reached out for the glass of juice, gazing at me over her glass as she sipped the juice. She knew I was watching her.

She smiled and reached for the piece of cucumber that was in the salad plate, but I deliberately snatched it just as her fingertip touched the cut slice of the cucumber.

Grinning, I took a large bite to which she offered her most convincing pout.

Hayye mein mar jawaan!

I smiled back affectionately and feeded her the rest.

We continued eating slowly without speaking.

The time felt like it had taken a stand still, stopping just for us. That moment felt like an eternity to enjoy each other’s company.

Finally the dessert plate arrived. A single dessert to share between the two of us. And of course a single spoon. I grabbed the spoon, and picked up a small bite of the strawberry cheesecake and raised the spoon towards her mouth to feed her. She opened her mouth slowly, and took the bite. She couldn’t help but smile with pleasure at the sweetness. Her innocent pleasure made its way across the tiny table, straight into my heart.

These small gestures of your make me fall even harder for you!

I then took a large bite and gulped it down my throat, just like a child. Yes, strawberry cheesecakes are my weakness. She laughed quietly at my playfulness.

I then grabbed another bite for her, but a bit larger than the previous one. She opened her mouth and ate it, while some remained on her lips.

I had planned that of course.

I then, reached towards her before she could raise her napkin. I leaned in towards her face, as she stared into my eyes. Her breath grew faster by the second. I was so close to her face that I could feel her warm breath on my face. I shifted my gaze from her eyes down to her lips to where the cheesecake crumbs were. Raising my right hand towards her lips, I slowly and carefully wiped away the crumbs with my thumb. And before she could realize, I placed a soft kiss on her cheek making her moan slightly as her cheeks went red.

I leaned back and gave her smile, and she returned a shy smile.

“How was the food?”, I questioned.

“Food toh acha hoga hi jab company itni achi ho!”, she said in a very shy tone, making my heart skip a beat.

If you ask me, we shared a lifetime in that lunch over the small table.

After what seemed like an eternity, I rose from the table and stepped over to her. She looked up at me with a confused expression and I held my hand out. She took my hand and rose, letting me lead her away.

Paying the bill, I crossed the room to the back door which led to a small patio. The air was warm and the clear sky speckled with stars. It was sunset time, and the sky looked like a canvas, that had been painted upon by the world’s greatest artist, the creator. The orange sky lit up the path ahead us, and I took her her arm in mine and walked.

The path ended at a sandy area by the shore of the lake. A small beach constructed by the splashtown people, to give the visitors a place to relax in the comfort of combed sand and lounge chairs. There was also a small area roped off for the swimmers which was cleared free of rocks and weeds. Several row boats were tied to the dock, stopping at the edge of the sand.

Before she could do it herself, I kneeled down and unbuckled her sandals, and slipped them off her feet, my hand slowly brushing against her soft feet, and placed them near a chair. She smiled and stepped onto the sand, soft and smooth, squishing it between her toes.

There it was, that childlike innocence again. I watched her, as I drank that innocence of hers. It was almost as if that innocence was intoxicating me.

I knew where she was going next. That is why I had taken her there.

She walked up towards the water.

She let out a giggle as the water touched her feet. I stepped in the water too.

“It’s cold. Almost numbing.”, I said.

But she didn’t care. She couldn’t resist the temptation to feel the water on her feet.

Before we knew it was almost dark, and the moon was up.

I walked back up to one of the chairs, and sat down as I watched her enjoy herself. The night was still, the lake was like glass, except for the childlike woman splashing and exploring in the shallows before me.

She turned and looked back at me sitting by the beach. She cocked her head as if to dare me to come in after her. Grinning I shook my head.

“Not this time. I’m staying safe on dry land.”, I yelled out to her.

Or so I thought, because before I knew, she kicked a stream of water towards me, barely missing, soaking my dry clothes.

I wasn’t expecting that though I should have, because I knew her so well. I was distracted, caught up in the moment.

“You did not just do that!”, I exclaimed.

She tilted her head back and laughed hard. The laugh sounded like that of a confidant woman.

That is not an innocent child standing in the lake before me. At that moment I fell in love with her a little more, wondering how that is possible when my love was already overflowing.

I got up and ran towards her, scooping some water into my hands and splashing it on her.

She laughed harder this time, running away, while I chased her on the wet and soft sand.

Finally as I got hold of her, caught her hand and stopped her. I turned her around, sliding my arm on her waist, pulling her closer to me. Her wet hair was framing her beautiful face in the moon light. I moved away the strand that was on her face, and neatly tucked it behind her ear.

“You look beautiful..”, I spoke, but before I could complete my sentence, she raised her right hand and cover my mouth with her palm. She then leaned in and kissed the back of her hand which was on my lips, and smiled. She then smiled loosened herself from within my grip and walked up towards the chairs.

I walked up to her and sat next to her. She slowly snaked her arm around my neck, and looked up at me with those sparkling eyes.

Caught up in the moment, I kissed her forehead.

She then rested her head onto my shoulder, with my hands on the back of her neck., holding her close to me. I was afraid to let go of this goddess that has graced the earth just for me.

“Thankyou Shehryaar!”, she smiled, “I love you!”

“I love you too”, I replied, staring at the moon, that was nearly fool, that lit up the entire beach.

Parting with quiet laughter, amused at our youthful enthusiasm, she took my hand and started walking to the dock.

I was captivated captivated. At that moment I could even follow her to the ends of the earth.

In fact, we nearly did. She led me to the very end of the dock.

“Amna this is scary!”, I exclaimed, but she smiled, “Its okay!”

We sat down, with our toes hanging over the edge. The shore and dock were out of view. All that could be seen before us was the water smooth as glass, reflecting the moonlight. It is as if we are standing on the lake, or hovering over it with no dock beneath us or shore behind us.

She teetered just a little and grabbed my jacket to steady herself.

Noticing her, I put my arm around her, a little unsteady as well. Both of us smiled at our clumsiness.

We sat for a while at the end of the dock.

“This has been the best day of my life, and I owe this all to you!”, she spoke.

“I never loved you any more than I do, right this second. And I’ll never love you any less than I do, right this second.”, I smiled.

She wanted to put her toes in the water, but it was just out of reach. She looked up at me giving me that adorable pout and rested her head on my shoulder instead, letting out a sigh.

She was finally relaxed, resting against me, enjoying the beauty of the lake, the stillness of the night.

There was silence around us, except for the quiet splash of an occasional fish and the singing of the summer insects. And of course, the beating of our hearts.

I took her hands and caressing them from the wrist to fingertip, as if exploring something beautiful and fragile. She yawned.

“Tired?”, I raised my eyebrow.

“Hmm”, she nodded.

I lifted her head from my shoulder, kissed her forehead softly, just barely touching her. I then rose, and helped her to her feet, leading her off the dock, across the sand.

Brushing the sand from her feet, I slipped them into her sandals.

I struggled a bit to close the tiny buckles, which were obviously not made for my large fingers. She looked down at me and laughed because she knew she could do it twice as fast, but she smiled and waited patiently, watching me as I concentrated.

Finally, after succeeding, I stood up, extending my hand out, as she takes it and stands up too.

Not being able to hold in any longer, I gave her a tight hug, snaking my arms across her waist, as she wrapped hers around my shoulders.

We stood there, without saying anything for about two minutes under the moonlight.

We slowly pulled apart, and she spoke, “I couldn’t have asked for a better day and time to spend with you!”

I smiled with content, knowing that she was happy, and I was the reason for her happiness.

We then walked back into the splash town water park to meet up with Hussain and Sana, before heading back home.

I will cherish that day forever in my heart because even without words, that day has been the best day of our lives, because we could feel each other, we could feel our hearts. And we knew what each of us felt, even without speaking. Yes, we knew each other’s words, the words we never said.

Kuch lafz the jo zubaan par aa na paein,

Haal-e-mohabbat jo bayan kar na paein.

Tere pyaar ke liye hi toh hum jeetey hain,

Tere pyaar ke liye hum mar bhi jaaein.
