Amna Meets Sana

It was a bright morning, the sun was shining brightly, and there were no clouds in the sky. It was the first day of my college life, and I wanted it to be perfect. I had been in texas for only about a week now, and I didn’t know anyone, except for my family, and cousins.

I didn’t know what the day had in store for me, but I was really excited.

I got up 2 hours earlier just so I had enough time to get ready. I took a shower, and decided to wear a casual grey T-shirt, with white skinny pants. Did my hair, and my makeup and went down for breakfast.

‘Mama, what’s for breakfast? And where is Umer? He’s not ready yet? I’m not going to wait for him.’ I didn’t want to be late on the first day.

Umer, my brother was just 11 months younger to me, and my parents made him start school a year early, with me, and so, we had studied together throught our school, and no we were together even in college.

‘Beta, calm down. Its only 7, and your first class is at 9. You’ve got plenty of time.’ Mum said, passing me a plate with French toast on it.

‘I know! But it takes about 45 minutes to get to college, that means we need to leave by 8! And you know Umer, he takes half an hour just to set his hair with his hair gel!’ I said taking a bite of my toast. A few crumbs fell down onto the table.

‘Amna, crumbs na girao table pe. Abhi toh saaf kia tha maine!’ Mum was obsessed with keeping the house clean at all times.

‘Mammaaa! Apne meri hair gel kaha rakhi?’ Umer shouted from the top.

‘Wahin hogi Umer, theek se dekho!’ Mum shouted from the kitchen.

‘Umer! I saw it next to dad’s cologne this morning. Wahan check karo. Shayad wahin hogi!’

Few minutes later Umer came down, with his hair all set, wearing a red sweater and black jeans.

‘Why are you wearing a sweater? Its not so cold today!’ I said as I drank the last sip of my orange juice and put the plate in the sink.

‘Baji! Aapke paas smart phone toh hai par aap use nahi karti ho! Weather check kia aapne aaj ka? Its going to get colder during the after noon! ‘ Umer said chuckling, as if mocking me.

‘Haan theek hai whatever! Ab jaldi karo, we gotta leave by 8! It takes 45 minutes for us to get  there!’ I said tying my shoe laces.

’45? Agar app dheere chalaeyngi to obviously 45 minutes hi lagenge! Haha!’  Umer always made fun of my driving.

‘Acha bas bhi karo ab! Subah subah tum dono aise argue na kia karo! Aur Umer jaldi karo na beta, Baji ki pehli class 9 baje se hai!’ Thankgod Mum told him this, or else he would’ve taken another hour just to finish his breakfast.

During our ride to the college, Umer was busy listening to his music and I was busy making sure that I was going the right way. I even had the GPS set up! Didn’t want to take any chances on the first day.

After we got to college, Umer went towards his class, while I walked as fast as I could towards mine. It was 8-55 and when I entered the class, it was almost full. The only seat that I could find was towards the back of the class, next to a girl, who looked desi too! Thankgod!

‘Hi! Can I sit here?’ I asked her. I didn’t know if I was could just go and sit anywhere, or not.

‘Yeah sure! Go ahead!’ she said smiling, and then going back to looking at her phone screen.

‘Hi Amna! Pakistani hoon, and I'm new here.’ I said. I didn’t want to be a loner. I wanted to make friends.

‘Oh Hi! Im Sana, and I'm Indian hehe!’. We shook hands.

The class began and we didn’t talk through out because we wanted to pay attention to what the professor required us to do during out the semester. He let us out early since it was the first day, and me and Sana got a chance to know each other better.

She was Indian, but was born in New York. She had moved to Texas for her college too, and hence did not know anyone else either. Except for one guy. Hussain Asif.

‘Hussain Asif? Who’s that?’ I didn’t know who that guy was.

WHAT? Tum Pakistani hoke Hussain Asif ko nahi jaanti?’ She was shocked.

Who was this guy? Was I supposed to know him? I was confused.

‘Yo! Check this out!’ she handed me her phone.

The Perfect Memory by The DhoomBros was playing on her phone. I watched the video and then she continued..

‘That, my friend, is  HUSSAIN ASIF!’ her cheeks were pink as she blushed.

‘Okayyy? And he goes to our college I guess? Aaand you like him?’ I tried putting things together so they made sense!

‘BINGO! Haha yes and guess what? Apparently he is in my next class! But the sad part is that he doesnt know me!' she said frowning.

‘Whatever! He isn’t even that great!’ i said. I didn’t find him that attractive.

The rest of the day was pretty much boring. Coincidentally me and Sana had all our classes together, and Hussain Asif was in 3 of our classes. Sana kept talking about him all day long, and I couldn’t wait to get back home and do some research on this guy since he was so famous.

Later that day, when I got home, I went up to my room, changed into my pj’s and decided to pull out my laptop and look up Hussain Asif.

‘Aakhir yeh banda hai kaun?’ I said to myself. To my astonishment, he was quite famous! And not only him but his brother Shehryaar Asif, his cousin Waqas Riaz and his friend Atif Khan! And these four guys were collective called The DhoomBros. And surprisingly, the guy Shehryaar Asif seemed familiar to me, but I just couldn’t remember where I had seen him.

I watched their videos all night long, and thought to myself that they weren’t even that funny.
