5 - record scratch

I yawned loudly, and rubbed my eyes. The hero night watches were and are the death of me. Always hated them, but we all knew that crime skyrocketed during the night. Guess I didn't get enough sunlight today. It wasn't my fault though. It was really cloudy today and, to be honest, I don't know if I have enough energy to last me for the entire night. I yawned again and shook my head to stay awake. I need a pick me up. Luckily, there was a convenience shop a block away.

The fluorescent lights bothered my eyes a bit, but I ignored it and made it to the drinks section. Hmmm, which drink should I get? Maybe I'll get [your favourite drink] and a water. I opened the door and grabbed both drinks, and grabbing a bag of chips before making my way to the cashier.

"Late night watch?" The cashier asked as she scanned the items.

"Yes," I grabbed a [favourite chocolate bar] and put next to my items.

She scanned the chocolate bar last, "well, thank you for protecting us."

Oh! "No need to thank me," I can feel my cheeks getting red, "it's what I promised to do when I decided to become a hero. How...how much do I owe you?"

"It's on the house," even though she looked tired, her smile was genuine. "Be safe out there."

I grabbed the plastic bag and told her good night. I left the store and a gentle breeze hit my face. Wanting to get back up, I jumped between the buildings and within seconds, I always already in the spot that I was before. I sat on the edge of the building and lucky for me, no one can see me up here. The night was quiet, if you ignored the occasional car honk, the laughter of drunk people, and the once in a while argument between couples leaving restaurants. Another yawned escaped my lips as I tried take a sip of [favourite drink]. I stopped yawning and immediately sensed someone in front of me.

"Someone hasn't been sleeping well."

"Hi, Hawks."

Hawks waved his hand. "Ayo. Do you mind if I join?"

I patted the spot next to me and within a second, Hawks sat in next to me. After we saw each other at the yakitori place, Hawks surprised me by visiting me at my agency the next day. When I asked him how he found my agency, Hawks admitted that he can sense where people were by using his feathers. Since I held onto one of his feather for two weeks, his feather got used to my presence. I had not idea how that worked, so I went along with it. Then I realised that Hawks must know where I lived and well, one thing led to another, and I spent a good hour yelling at him because I didn't want him to know where I lived. I tried to stifle a yawn but failed miserably.

"You know," Hawks started saying, "if you're tired, you can take a nap on my shoulder."

"Thanks, but I'm going to reject that offer."

He laughed at my comment. "Suit yourself, baby bird. I've told that I make an excellent pillow."

"Uh huh," I aimlessly said as I grabbed my bag of chips. "How many people have told you that?"

"Umm," Hawks started to count his fingers, "at the least, maybe nine people."

I rolled my eyes and opened the bag. "You're unbelievable."

"Odd. I usually hear that in bed." His voice held no embarrassment by what he said.

"Do you, like, ever hear yourself talk? Or have any self control?"

Hawks pointed to the bag and I nodded my head. He grabbed some chips and ate them. "Nope. No self control. Was never taught that."

"Taught?"

His usual cheery and carefree expression turned into a serious one. "What do you know about me, Y/N?"

I taught back to my student years. "I remember when you first debuted. I was in my second year at U.A. You immediately won the hearts of most, if not all, my friends. You were unlike any of the Pro Heroes we've learned about, or saw in action. It was like you were the perfect hero."

"The perfect hero," Hawks repeated with a hint of venom in his voice. "I always hated hearing that."

"Why?"

"Because that's what I was trained to be. I was trained to become the perfect hero." Hawks took off his glasses and looked down. "Whether I liked it or not."

Hawks didn't want say anything else, and I wasn't going to push the subject. I sighed softly and took a sip of my drink while offering more chips to him. He gave me a small smile and grabbed the bag.

"I always wanted to be a hero," I said while looking down at my drink. "I remember watching my mom on tv and just being so proud of her. I don't know when, but one day I promised my dad that I was going to be a Pro Hero just like her."

"Your mom was a Pro Hero?!" In an instant, Hawks' mood brighten up and it made me happy. "Who was she?! What was her name?!"

I shook my head, "nope. Not going to tell you."

His eyebrow rose and he had a cheeky grin. "You do know I can force it out of you."

"And I can easily defeat you at one-on-one," my tone was flat. "Your quirk helps you with long range, but you suck at close combat."

"Sooooo," Hawks loudly changed the subject, knowing that I was right, "you wanted to be like your mom?"

"Yep," I nodded my head. "She's the reason why I applied to the hero course at U.A."

My hands were starting to sweat and my chest was tightening. While I was alright with talking about my mom, and what happened to her, it still hurts. Especially when I haven't talked about her in almost two years. Last year, I didn't go back home for her anniversary because I was on a mission. My dad understood, but my brother was furious at me. We didn't talk for a couple of months and only made up thanks to the involvement of our dad and Aizawa.

"But," I squeezed the bottle a bit harder, "when she was killed during one of her missions, I thought about quitting of becoming a hero. And I was really close of being kicked out from the hero course.

Her death was one of the reasons why I sometimes get anxious about being a hero. I love being a hero, don't get wrong, but sometimes it's hard getting over the anxiety once I get home."

From the corner of my eye, I saw Hawks reaching out to comfort me, but he stopped himself. I rolled my eyes and held his gloved hand. He tensed up at my touch, but quickly relaxed.

"Luckily, my homeroom teacher was there for me and helped me a lot. He knew what I was going through, and what I continue going through." I drank the last of my drink and put it back inside the bag. "Since he knew that I can't rely on my quirk 24/7, he trained me personally and taught me his own fighting style. That's why," I let go of Hawks' hand and lightly punched his shoulder, "I know that I can easily win against you."

He jokingly rubbed his shoulder. "You proved your point, Y/N. You can beat me up."

We both started laughing and it felt free. And comfortable. Never thought I would feel comfortable around the No. 3 Pro Hero, but here we are. It was Hawks that went quiet first and he frowned slightly.

"Sorry. About your mom, that is."

"It's okay," I smiled sadly, "you don't have to apologise. She was an amazing mom and hero. I do miss her, a lot, but her death saved lives. We can't save everyone. That's the sad truth of our profession."

I felt a hand on my head and looked up to see Hawks looking at me. He cupped my cheek and drew small circles with his thumb. My heart was beating so fast inside my chest and my hands were getting clammy. Out of nowhere, Hawks placed a kiss on my forehead and pulled me into his side, wrapping a wing around us.

He sighed then chuckled softly. "We really do have the worst profession, baby bird."

We stayed like that for longer than I liked to admit. Hawks was really warm and it felt so comfortable being next to him. But, as duty calls, we did have to stop three villains. Hawks got there first for the first two villains, and when I arrived, the job was already done and the villains were tied up. For the last villain, I got there first, since Hawks was still busy with ten second villain. Unfortunately, my sunlight levels were running low quickly and we still has an hour and a half for the sun to rise. But lucky for me, Hawks helped me at the last minute and as soon as he tied the villain up, I could feel my body getting heavy. The last thing I remember was being saved by something soft before I could even touch the cement.

I stirred in the bed, turning to lay on the other side of my body. The warmth of the sun was hitting my body and it felt so good. I pulled the cover closer to my face and snuggled more into the bed. It smells nice. Was it the new detergent? Odd. I felt around the bed and my chest. Mochi isn't next to me, or on top of me. I mentally shrugged. She's probably laying under the kotatsu.

What time is it? Why hasn't my alarm gone off? Did I set it last night?

Hold the fuck up. I don't remember coming home last night. I opened my eyes and saw that I wasn't laying in my bed. I wasn't even in my apartment. Just gonna close my eyes. This is a dream. I'm dreaming. It's fine. It's just a dream.

I opened my eyes again and I was still in the same place. IT'S NOT A FUCKING DREAM. I'M NOT DREAMING. Without even realising, I let out a scream. The bedroom door flew open and Hawks appeared. Without a fucking shirt.

"What happened?! Is everything okay?!" Hawks looked panicked and he sent out feathers to look around the room.

"Where am I?!" I pointed at him, "and why the fuck are you shirtless?!"

Hawks paused his feathers and made them return back to him. "I'm always shirtless when I'm home, chickadee."

We just stared at each other, not saying anything. He was the first one to break the silence.

"You fainted last night," he said in a matter-of-fact voice. "I was going to take you to your apartment, but I remembered your yelling from a few days ago. So, I brought you to my apartment."

"That's what I was afraid of," I admitted while sitting up. "When my sunlight levels depletes, I tend to faint. Since it was really cloudy yesterday, I couldn't restore the sunlight."

There was another moment of awkward silence between us.

"How do I get home?"

Hawks blinked a few times then smiled. "Running away from me already?"

I rolled my eyes. "I just want to get out of my hero costume, feed my cat, and enjoy my day off. Trust me, I'm not even thinking about you." That was a lie. I couldn't keep Hawks out of my mind, especially when he's just standing there. Shirtless.

"It's your day off?!" He basically screamed. "It's my day off too! We should spend it together!"

"No, thank you." I got up from the bed and stretched. "Don't like the idea of being seen in public with the No. 2 hero."

"But I can disguise myself!"

Is...is he being serious? "Hawks."

He tilted his head a bit. "Yes?"

"I don't think a disguise will work," I looked at him deadpanned.

"Why not?"

I pointed at his wings. "You literally have two fucking giant ass wings."

Hawks smiled knowingly. "Guess we just gotta spend the day indoors then."
