Five sighed, laying next to Y/n as she slept peacefully. He watched the slow rise and fall of her chest as she slept until she suddenly woke up, sitting up right so abruptly. Their room was dark, safe for the dim lamp in the corner and the open windows drafting breezes in.

"Where is everyone?" She whispered.

"Asleep." He whispered back, sarcasm hanging from his following words, "So is this still a migraine?"

She rolled her eyes as he took the back of his hand to her forehead, "It's nothing."

"That's impossible." He mumbled while taking his hand back, "I checked your temperature six minutes ago and you were burning up."

"My fever must've broke on it's own. I feel fine." She shrugged, "Oh, I had the weirdest dream."

"What was it about?"

"It was about..." She paused, "Oh my, god, I don't remember. It was something important."

"It was a fever dream, Y/n. It wasn't even real." He assured her.

She shook her head, "No, no, it was. It was about... my mom."

"Your mom?" He checked.

"Yeah, she told me something important. I just can't remember what it was."

He rubbed circles into her back, "Just go back to sleep."

She sighed and laid back down, facing Five as she slowly slipped back into her sleep, listening to the sound of his breathing.

Five grabbed his and Y/n's drinks off the bar the next morning. He handed her drink over as they walked back to the table Klaus and Diego were sat at, both watching Diego's son from across the room.

"Wait... who's the mother?" Five questioned while taking a seat.

"Lila."

"Woah, woah, Lila's here?"

"Was. She dropped him off in my lap last night then bolted."

"I don't care much for that one." Y/n shrugged.

"Technically, she's family, now."

"She was trying to murder us, like, yesterday." Klaus shrugged.

"Yeah, like I said, "family"." He took a sip of his drink, "Diego, is she coming back?"

"Well, she goddamn better be," He shouted, "Because we got more important things to be dealing with right now!"

Stanley looked up from his meal, glancing around at the four of you. He waved back at Y/n after she had waved to him.

"Calm down." Klaus whispered.

"Where's Luther?" Vanya inquired as she approached the table.

"Who cares?" Diego scoffed, "Probably out for... a run."

"Love the haircut." Klaus gestured.

Y/n agreed, nodding as she took a sip from her smoothie, "Yeah, it really frames your face."

"... So, I talked to Marcus last night."

"Wait, what? You talked with the enemy?" Diego checked, "By yourself?"

"Somebody had to do something."

"Who elected you, Vanya?"

"It's... Viktor."

"Who's Viktor?"

"... I am. It's who I've always been." He glanced around at the table, "Is that an issue for anyone?"

"Nah, I'm good with it."

"Yeah, me too. Cool."

"Yeah, cool. I don't mind." Y/n shrugged.

"Truly happy for you, Viktor. But last time I checked you don't speak for this family."

He took a seat at the table, "It's fine, okay? Marcus totally gets it. He doesn't want a war anymore than we do."

"What are you talking about? He tried to homicide us!" Diego reminded him.

"So did Lila, and you had a kid with her." Y/n laughed, sipping on her drink.

"That's not the point!"

"Listen," Viktor started, "We made a deal. He's gonna give back Five's briefcase, then we're gonna get out of the timeline. We're gonna meet later today for the, uh, the handover."

"Oh, thank god!" Klaus groaned.

"That's a rookie move. Dude is playing you." Diego mumbled.

"Really?"

"Yeah, but maybe we can use this." He nodded, "We turn it back on them, and then we wipe them the hell out."

"Diego, stop, please." He groaned, "And you're not gonna, like, do anything today."

"Except bond with your spawn."

"Alleged spawn." He corrected Klaus.

"I will get the briefcase, and then we will all go back and fix the timeline."

"We're not going anywhere!" Five interrupted him, "This is a perfectly acceptable timeline."

"Yeah, why don't you go tell that to Allison, who's upstairs grieving her daughter, who doesn't even exist here!"

"Not to mention, we got replaced by a bunch of blobs and cube who got a real name before Five did." Y/n scoffed.

"Okay, news flash geniuses! It's not about us!" Five held his arms out, "Take a look around. If you hadn't noticed, there's no doomsday. There's no apocalypse. The sun is shining. Birds are doing whatever the hell birds do. That's all that matters. We're done messing with time. And I'm officially retired." He sighed, clicking his glass against Y/n's. He stood up and walked off to the buffet.

"Seems legit." Y/n shrugged and followed him.

As the two reached the buffet, the power in the building shut down for a moment. The only light that was left was what filtered through the windows. It wasn't a beat later that the power flickered back on. Y/n gave Five a strange look and he just shrugged it off and continued getting some food.

"Hey." Klaus whispered to get their attention, "What do you say we get outta here, huh? Take a little... road trip."

"Sounds fun." Eight shrugged.

"You fainted yesterday from a fever." He reminded her.

"I appreciate the concern, but I'm fine." She reassured him and looked to Klaus, "What type of road trip?"

"I'm talking about a sojourn to the countryside. You, me, Five, the wind in our hair." He paused after they both seemed unsure and whispered, "Listen to me, I nearly died from Luther's sleep farts last night. We need to get out of here, get some fresh air!"

Five sighed, pivoting on his heel to face Klaus, "Okay, I'll bite. Why us, Klaus?"

"Because... you're both retired, and that's what retired people do. And doesn't the cutest couple deserve some fun?"

"There's no lobsters." Five muttered.

"Excuse me?"

"There were three lobsters in that tank a minute ago." He elaborated while nodding to the tank.

"Yeah, well, maybe Chet blended them into a morning smoothie." Klaus dismissed it with a shrug.

There was a short pause as Five thought, "You're an Idiot, but I'm in."

"Yeah, me too." Y/n shrugged.

"Whoo!"

Klaus drove down the road as Five was sat in the passengers side with Y/n laying across the back three seats, looking out the window across from her. They were traveling down a long road as Y/n watched the trees pass by in a blur as music played through the speakers.

"This actually isn't so terrible." Five murmured.

"See? Told you."

"Come to think of it, my whole life Ive been under the gun. Missions for Dad, working for the commission, trying to survive the apocalypse." He listed and continued, "I was always looking around every corner, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's nice to just breathe."

"Good for you, man. Retirement is suiting you."

"Oh!" Five remembered, reaching into the glove compartment as Y/n leaned forward, looking over his shoulder as he unfolded a map. "I've circled all the roadside attractions along the way."

"I'm not sure we're gonna have time..."

"There's the Brownsville Big Nickel." Five continued.

"Hm, what's that one?" Y/n questioned, reaching over his shoulder and pointing at one of the circles.

"Ricky's Bakery, they have award-winning pies."

"If you just let me explain..." Klaus tried again.

"Or there's this Cow Henge."

"Listen to me. Just shut up for two seconds, okay?" Klaus interrupted him and Five sighed, folding the map back up. "We are going to Pennsylvania to find my birth mother. Yay!"

"Excuse me?"

"I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry." He apologized to both of them has they rolled their eyes, "I just needed somebody to come with me for emotional support."

"Emotional support?" Five repeated, "Like a Schnauzer?"

"I knew you wouldn't come if I told you! I mean, maybe Y/n... so, what was I supposed to do?"

"You're goddamn right I wouldn't have come, Klaus. You know why? Because I am supposed to be retired!"

"I know!"

"This was supposed to be a carefree road trip." Y/n reminded him from the back seats.

"Well, it still can be, babe." Klaus shrugged.

Five scoffed and looked out of the window, reading the sign on the side of the road, "Ball of Twine? Klaus, turn!"

Five grabbed the wheel and shoved it towards the right, nearly hitting three cars. Y/n nearly flew into the car door as they fought over the wheel, shouting nonsense at each other.

"No twine, no birth mother!" Five shouted as he let go of the wheel, settling back in his seat.

Y/n got out from the back seats as the car came to a stop on a farm. She stretched her arms out while taking a looked around. It was mainly a huge farm with some livestock, cows and pigs in particular. There was hay thrown over the ground and it smelled a bit unpleasant.

"Son of a bitch," Five scoffed, "Klaus is amish."

"This explains everything." Klaus gasped while getting out of the car.

"How does this explain anything?" Y/n inquired while holding an arm out and leaning against the car.

"Because look! This is everything my childhood was missing."

"Hey, Klaus, doppelgänger check," Five stopped him as he walked, "You feel anything strange? Uh, itching, sweats, anything like that?"

"No. No, I feel great." He shrugged, "Apart from the old rash on the tackle, but what can you do?"

"All right, good luck."

"What? You guys aren't coming?" Klaus inquired while turning around.

"This one you gotta do alone." Y/n shrugged going back to the car.

Five and Y/n sat in the back of the car together with some music playing. The car door open as Five flipped through a magazine. He was slumped against the seat and Y/n was leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder. She messed with the ring on her finger, the number thirteen engraved on the inside of the band.

Five glanced over, "You still wear that?"

"Why wouldn't I?" She mumbled, slipping it back onto her finger.

He shrugged slightly, "Looking back, we never made things official. Then, you know, I left you in the 60's for 10 months."

She laughed and sat up next to him, "I don't really care about that. It gave me some freedom."

He laughed a little and hummed, still not bothering to glance over at her as he kept his eyes trained on that magazine in front of him, "Freedom?"

"Yeah, like a chance to figure out what I like to do, you know. Have some fun."

She watched him while speaking, noting that he was listening attentively, but agitated he wouldn't even look over at her. He nodded in response to her as she set a hand on his cheek, making him look at her.

He bit back a sly smile on his face, "What?"

Y/n took her hand back and he stayed look at her even after she looked away, "At least look at me when I talk." She muttered under her breath.

Five laughed and dropped the magazine in his lap, taking ahold on the side of her face just as she had done to him and pulled her into a chaste kiss. Y/n's lips were soft yet warm from the spring heat, like he was drinking the sun, and his tasted of something heavenly, almost as if discovering the stars had a flavor. His finger trailed along her jawline, reaching her chin to lift her head up a little.

The car suddenly shook a little, making the two pull apart. Y/n peeked past Five to look at the field of grass and he looked as well to see that the cows had dissipated into thin air. They got out from the car, taking a look around as Five groaned.

"Ugh, can't I get one fucking day off?"

He reached into the car, grabbing a marker and started doing math equations on the doors window. Y/n was resting against the trunk before hopping off to take a look at what he had been scrawling away at. She scanned over the math on two of the windows before coming up on his side.

"Wait, shouldn't that be a 9?"

He looked back quickly, erasing the 12, "Yeah, you're right."

"Five! Eight!" Klaus yelled while running over the hill, "Start the car, would ya?"

Y/n looked back, squinting as a hoard of amish people were chasing Klaus.

"Start the car! Eight! Five!" He yelled while waving his arms around.

"Why can't you just get along with people?" Five inquired while running to start the car while Y/n hopped in the back seat.

"I tried. Really, I did!"

"Wait, wait!" A woman yelled, holding a book with frayed pages.

"Hold on a second!"

"Come on! Get in the car, Klaus!" Five shouted as he talked to the woman.

Five started driving away the moment Klaus hopped in the car, scanning over the pages of what the woman had handed him.

He laughed, "This whole timeline's a chock-full of riddles. Get this. My mom died here before I was even born!"

Five slammed on the breaks, "What did you just say?"

That night the three rushed into the hotel to see everyone else around the bar or eating.

"Gather around, people." Five called while opening the book and setting it on the bar. "Where's every— Where's Luther?"

"Haven't seen him."

"Who knows." Diego shrugged.

"Okay, you know what? We got bigger problems to worry about right now."

"Like what?" Allison scoffed, a drink in her hand.

"This," Five pointed at the page.

Viktor took the book, flipping through all the woman, "Who are they?"

"Our mothers."

"That one's mine." Klaus pointed to the black and white picture of the amish woman.

"They're all dead. They all died on the exact same day, October 1st, 1989."

"That's our birthday."

"Not anymore." Y/n shrugged, "They all died before we were born."

"That's dumb." Diego scoffed, "If we weren't born, how can we exist?"

"Exactly."

Viktor shook his head, "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying, when we jumped here, we created a time paradox. All right? Not just any paradox. This is the grandfather paradox."

"What the hell is grandfather paradox?" Klaus inquired.
