"Can you just tell him I'm sick?" I ask.

"Can't you just go to class?" Ashlyn asks.

"I need to go get a gift for Maddy for our anniversary. This is the only day the place is gonna be open." I say.

"Fine." Ashlyn says.

"Thank you." I say.

Maddy and I started dating when she was a sophomore and I was a junior. Her parents did a lot to keep her away from me. They insist on Maddy being with someone — and I quote — "like her." But I don't know what that means and Maddy refuses to tell me.

But she always found her way back to me and I always found my way back to her. That's why I want to marry her, even if it's not for a few years.

So today I'm gonna ask her parents if I can. I just gotta pray to for they won't strangle me.

"How's Y/n?" Cassie asks.

"She's okay." I say.

"You're not worried about her cheating while she's at college?" Cassie asks.

"Y/n would never. The only place her head should be is in those books." I say.

"You think that girl told them that I smashed her head on the bathroom sink?" I ask.

Cassie shrugs and I walk to the office.

"Whatever she said, she's lying." I say.

Mom and dad stare at me and I gulp.

"And we mean it! She is very disrespectful." Dad says.

"What did she do?" I ask.

2 weeks later...

Y/n's flew back home for New Years and her mom invited me over. I was gonna show up regardless.

"Y/n/n, can you take the dogs out?" Alice asks.

Y/n nods and the dogs follow her outside.

"Y/n told me about your parents." Alice says.

"It's none of my business but you guys go great together. I wanna be in the front row at your wedding." Alice says.

I nod and smile.

"This is a gift from me to you." Alice says opening the drawer.

She takes a ring out and hands it to me.

"It was mine — the one Mark gave me." She says.

"I-I can't take this. Does Y/n know?" I say.

"We talked about it and I want you to have it. That ring is not the only thing I have to remember him. It's just collecting dust." She says.

"Oh my, thank you so much." I say.

She smiles and I hug her.

I run outside and Y/n looks up. I hug Y/n tightly and she looks around confused.

I show the ring to her and she smiles.

"Does that mean yes?" Y/n asks.

"There is simply no way you got into Harvard." I say.

She laughs and I smile.

I've just been lying to my parents and telling them that I broke up with Y/n.
