"Who is that?" I ask as a girl walks past.

"That's Y/n, the foreign exchange student staying with us." Lexi says.

"Does Rue have a crush?" Jules asks.

"What? No." I say.

Puttin' my defenses up

"You think I'm in love, that's insane." I say.

If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack

"I never said you were in love." Jules says.

"Oh, look at that. The bell rang, gotta go learn about the American Revolution." I say as the bell rings.

"Don't you have Spanish next?" Lexi asks.

I stare at her and run away.

Time Skip

"Whatcha doing?" I ask sitting beside Y/n.

"Just waiting for the time to pass." Y/n says.

"Yeah, doesn't really look like you like parties." I say.

Y/n laughs and I smile.

"Are you Italian?" Y/n asks.

"I just assumed because they say we Italians are some of the hottest people around." Y/n says.

"I'm American, which is embarrassing to say in the light of the recent events." I say.

I knock on the door and Maddy answers it.

"I need your help." I say barging in.

"When's the last time you washed your hair?" Cassie asks pulling leaves out of my hair.

Jules flips Maddy off and she laughs.

"How was your date?" Maddy asks.

"I was so nervous and—" I say.

"I was nervous but it went well. There's a second date this Friday." I say.

"I didn't think it was possible for someone to actually be interested in you." Maddy says.

"You just need to work on the nervousness." Cassie says.

But I cover up, won't let it show

"Have you ever been in love before?" I ask.

"Oh, yeah. I've gotten the butterflies and all that kind of stuff." Ali says.

"Someone caught your eye?" Ali asks.

"There's a foreign exchange student from Italy and I really like her. We've gone out twice but I just feel like I can't be myself around her. I just end up sounding or looking like a moron when I do." I say.

And every time I try to be myself
It comes out wrong like a cry for help

"She just laughs because she probably thinks I'm awkward on purpose." I say.

"You just have to get comfortable with each other, it'll take a while." Ali says.

"I think that was why I stayed away from relationships. Love just never seemed worth it." I say.

My room door opens and Y/n walks in.

"You said you weren't coming over until later." I say pulling my blanket up on me.

"I look like shit right now so—" I say.

"Really?" I ask.

"I mean you look like a hobo but hobos deserve love too." Y/n says.

My jaw drops and she laughs.

"I've been asking my friends to help me look decent whenever we hang out." I say.

So scared, I take off and I run

"It took you long enough, you told me you were on the way 30 minutes ago." I say.
