the eight-tailed fox

@Fantasyera1

donghua dijun had always told himself that sacrifices would always have to be made for the sake of humanity, and peace in all the realms.

yet his blood roiled in his veins when he stared at the name on the three lives stone. the name that his should have been beside.

bai feng jiu.

the woman who was now lying in qing qiu, an inch from death, because she'd cut off one of her tails to carve his name next to hers.

the woman who now had another man's name next to hers.

so much for telling himself that carving his name off the stone was a worthy sacrifice for the sake of the world, because he sure as hell regretted it.

his cold face registered nothing, and yet his heart was a raging tempest inside.

if he followed the heavens' decree, he would be safe. no punishments, no consequences. he could live in peace for the rest of his days. she would find happiness with another man, become the queen of qing qiu, and never spare him another thought. all would be well.

and yet, if he didn't go with his heart...

dijun didn't know how he was going to live, much less live forever.

"no, he is not going to enter this den." bai qian insisted to a sympathetic ye hua. "i don't care if he's a lord. he hurt my niece, and he's answering for it."

dijun had arrived outside the fox den hours before. her family had refused to let him in. dijun was unsurprised, and he would normally never stay longer than five minutes, but his desire to see her again rooted his feet to the ground.

"how is she?" he murmured to ye hua, who'd stayed with him out of pity, or perhaps sympathy. ye hua shook his head.

"she's still unconscious."

dijun's fists clenched.

"zhe yan says that there is no guarantee that she will pull through. losing a tail can be fatal to nine-tailed foxes." ye hua added, cringing as he delivered the bad news.

dijun kept his face carefully blank, although his heart was racing. "so you want me to be prepared for the worst?"

"i'm saying that anything is possible."

after a pause, ye hua asked. "why did you remove your name? had you not, there would be no question of you two getting together."

dijun shook his head. "i thought that forsaking my marriage was the best way for me to continue to help maintain peace in the realms."

"i didn't know her at the time." dijun sighed. "if i'd known her, i would have asked the heavens to strike me with lightning rather than even think of removing my name. i wouldn't have caused her all this heartbreak."

ye hua looked at him, his features softening. "so you regret it."

dijun looked ahead.

"of course i do," he said.

"i'm in love with her."
