Part 26. Needs

"I don't know how you found me," Robin yelled, "But you shouldn't be here. I told you that before."

"Nobody's trying to hurt you this time," Jack answered, while fear was still holding Amber back. It took all her willpower not to turn and run, but that meant Jack was free to take control. "We've remembered part of the story, from all those years ago. Worked out the parts we can't remember. But Belmadir's been messing with our memories, we have to–"

"What the fuck?" he stared, and when he didn't get an immediate answer he carried on: "What's with that voice? You didn't sound like that... Never mind, get away from my house."

"Sorry," Amber shook her head, "That's Jack, he's kind of a ghost. Like Ammadrine in your head, maybe, but not quite, he's just kind of helping me out."

"Look, you can't be here. There's another one of those things coming, it's hunting for you. I'm not going to keep on protecting you, kid, that's not my job."

"No, but you can't keep on ignoring them forever. Why did you agree to Ammadrine's contract?"

"None of your business. You wouldn't understand."

"You wanted power for something. So maybe you wanted to fight the monsters, you wanted to be a hero. Or maybe you're just in it for yourself. You said about money last time, so I think you're just greedy. Well, you're going to lose everything. Belmadir doesn't want to share control. He's going to rule the world, and Ammadrine's going to be his wife, and he doesn't care what anybody else thinks."

"That freak? He said he had no business with me."

"You've met him? That's easier then. He's been summoning the monsters all along, trying to make us think it was you. He's the expert in mind control and manipulation, changing people's memories. He didn't want to fight you until he'd built his machines, got everything set up, and now he has. He wants Ammadrine, just to show that he's the most important one, and you don't want to imagine what he'll do to you to prove it. And using her powers to make money won't help you when the whole world belongs to him."

"I'll stop him then. She can tell me his weakness, and –"

"You're not listening," Jack growled again, "Ammadrine's power isn't enough to fight him. Not now. Not when he can seal away half your abilities by playing with the machines that control our reincarnations. Maybe one of us could go toe to toe with him, but he was always one of the strongest, and now he's got two major advantages. He knows what's going on, and he's got the demons to obey him. Seven of us together, we might be able to take him on, but from the power I'm feeling from him now, I don't think so."

"I agree," Mel spoke softly as he approached, "We have to try, but I think this is a battle we can't win. The demons, and the armour, and whatever other surprises he's been setting up for us. He could take on six knights without a problem."

"That's why we're here," Amber smiled, even in this frightening situation. "Because there aren't seven Rainbow Knights. There were seven before Belmadir faked his death, but now there's only six."

"But Ammadrine–"

"Was never a knight," Robin shook his head, "I knew that much at least. She was reincarnated with you, but she was never one of you. You're telling me that this guy's trying to mess with my memories, but you don't even know that?"

Mel and Arnie looked shocked as they stepped back, trying to put their memories together again and work out what they'd missed. Monica looked back and forth between their faces in confusion, trying to find enough context to understand. Only Amber nodded, and sighed with relief. She'd been right.

"Then why are we here?" Alex asked, her voice merging with Arnie's to generate a weird harmonic that sounded almost like an Irish accent.

"To meet Ammadrine properly," Amber said, "And help her get her powers back."

"No," Robin stood with arms folded, his determination only slightly undermined by the dressing gown flapping around to expose his knees. "You don't know what she'll do, and I don't want–"

"I know," Amber said, "I know that she's tired, and scared, and she's had enough of always having to do the right thing. I know what she's feeling, and I know some of the things she wants, and it's kind of weird and scary some of it. But I'll do whatever she asks if it can save the world. Why are you so scared, if a little girl can do whatever she has to?"

"I'm not scared, I just don't want to..."

"I will do whatever it takes to save the world," Amber said firmly. The man moved forward like he was going to push her away, knock her down. But she dropped to her knees in the middle of the path, and it was clear she wasn't going anywhere. "And I don't like Ammadrine being trapped. I want to talk to her now, and I'll do anything. Whatever you ask for. Even if we can't win the battle, just talking to her again is all I want. Do you understand? You don't have to do anything you don't want to, but you can at least let me talk to her?"

There was a long moment of silence. And through the faintest sounds, the others started to realise that Robin and Amber were both quietly sobbing. Even if her words couldn't break through that angry shell, her feelings were getting through.

"Ammadrine isn't a knight?" Mom whispered to Mel in the darkness, "How can that be? You talked so much about her armour." But all he could do was shrug, and keep watching.

"I'm sorry," Robin's voice was a little softer now, and through the tears Amber could see a faint golden ring around his eyes. Ammadrine was struggling to push through the man's resistance, but for now she couldn't do much more than watch.

"Ammadrine," Amber whispered, and forced herself not to use the title that had caused so much drama. "I'm here. The Knights are here. Can we talk?"
