Let Him Down pt 2

Walking down the hallways, Y/n stopped right at the end bedroom, her hand hovering over the door handle. It had been so long since she last intended to enter this room but here she was. Once she gained enough courage, Y/n reached into her pocket and pulled out the keys to unlock the door.

Stepping inside, she flicked the light on before heading over to the bed. Underneath it was a bunch of boxes but one of them caught her eye the most. Inside it was lots of things that Eddie had once owned. She just couldn't bare having it sit around in the open because it brought back too many memories. Which was ultimately too much pain for her.

Dragging the box out from its hiding spot, Y/n lifted the lid off, immediately revealing Eddie's signature denim vest that he always use to wear. After everything happened, Steve had given it back to her since she was the one closest to Eddie and thought that it was best if she kept it. So she did.

Just as she was about to take out the vest, the front door slammed shut which meant Peter had finally returned from school. It reminded her why she had entered this room and why she was here looking at Eddie's old things even after telling herself she wouldn't. This was for her son, for some closure of who his father was and what he was really like. To show that he wasn't the cold hearted monster Hawkins described him as. That he was a good person.

Placing the lid back onto the box, she picked it up causing whatever was inside it to rattle as she left the room. Peter was about to enter his room until Y/n called his name. He immediately grew curious when he saw the box she was holding while walking past that had his fathers name written on it.

"What are you doing?" He asked, tossing his bag into his room before following her into the kitchen.

"Well you wanted to know things about him." She dropped the box onto the table, taking the lid off once again before sitting down at one of the chairs. Peter decided to join her and watch as she lifted the DIO vest out first. It was nicely decorated with DnD printed at the back and other pins.

Y/n handed it to him so she could get out some other things whilst he admired the jacket. Looking at everything brought a smile to her face, there were so many memories stored inside here and now it was time to share them with Peter.

"Try it on."

"Are you sure?" Obviously he wanted to, considering how cool it looked he was just unsure. He didn't want to reck anything that belonged to Eddie since he knew how much it meant to his mother. She nodded and gave him a reassuring smile which then he finally slid it on, turning around for her. "This is so cool!"

"I think it's still a bit big for you but it's yours to keep, if you want."

"Really! Thank you, I promise to take good care of it." He was overjoyed owning something as cool as this. Plus the 80's was always something he had loved and wished to have properly experienced. Not only that, but he felt connected to his dad in someway even though he had never met him. "Do you have any photos of him?"

"Plenty." Y/n answered, searching through the box till she found a white envelope. She carefully opened it, pulling out the pictures inside and laying them onto the kitchen table. Some of the photos had little notes on the back saying the date and what was happening. Reading them made her feel like she was there living it again. It was taking a lot of strength for her not to cry right there in front of Peter.

Lots of the photos were of Eddie and his band or the club, taking silly pictures together. Y/n had taken them on their first night playing at the hideout and after Eddie's first successful campaign. There were also photos that Wayne had taken of Y/n and Eddie together in his trailer every Christmas and Halloween, along with many other times they hung out.

Peter had realised how similar he looked to his dad as he went through all the photos. As well as the fact that he did not look like your typical serial killer. He seemed like he would've been a great guy to be around. Or a great guy to have as a dad.

"I know it's not a good excuse, but you look so much like him, it's why it hurts to look at you sometimes." Y/n explained, wiping away a tear that fell down her cheek. "I'm sorry Peter."

"No, I'm sorry, you're not the worst mom ever."

"I'm not far off." She joked which sent them both in a fit of laughter. Afterwards they sat there in silence for a few seconds, processing what had just happened. This bonding was something new for the both of them. Usually they would be arguing, yelling and slamming doors shut but now here they were, laughing together and having fun.

"What's these?"

"Your dads old records and CD's."

Y/n tipped them out so they were scattered beside the photos. Most of the records were Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and some Megadeth. Peter was familiar with most of the bands, most of them he actually really liked. Just from looking at these things, he already thought his dad was the coolest person ever. It really sucked he never got to know him.

"So what you think?"

"This is amazing." He answered, holding up some of the photos and music. "I wish I could've known him."

"I wish you could've too." After they had gone through everything, she packed it back up and they went back to the room where it was stashed. Y/n told him to wait by the door until she had found what she wanted. In her hands she held a red electric guitar, the same one Peter had seen in some of the photos. "He would want you to have this."

"I-I can't."

"I haven't played in years, it's no use for m-"

Y/n was cut off by Peter pulling her in for a tight hug. It took a second for her to process what was going on but she then gently placed the guitar on the floor and hugged him back. She never wanted this moment to end, if only they could stay like this forever. Maybe things would turn around with her son for the best. She couldn't lose anyone else.

"Thank you for showing me." When he looked up Y/n could see that he had begun to cry. "I'm sorry for everything that you've been through, and how I treated you."

Y/n held onto him like she was afraid to lose him. She couldn't, not now, not after everything she had been through. She needed to make up for everything, to give Peter the best life he could have. The last thing she wanted to do was let Eddie down.
