It's a Long Way to the Top

TW talks of suicide, drugs and overdose

Ever since primary school, Eddie had been determined to become a rock star. He loved to play the guitar and listen to music. He wanted to be in a band with some of his friends like Gareth and Jeff. That was his massive dream that people would always call 'impossible'. They'd say 'dream big, but not that big' or 'be more realistic'. But he was, he was being realistic. That's what he wanted to do even if people didn't believe in him or support him. Well actually Y/n did, she always supported him. In primary school, they were best friends, practically inseparable. As they got older and got to high school, their feelings towards each other had grown into something more. Something beautiful. Many people were jealous of their relationship. While most couples lasted a couple months at most, they had been together for over six years.

Y/n was the best girlfriend ever. She was everything a guy could want. Everything Eddie wanted. He'd be playing at a gig with Corroded Coffin, even if it wasn't big. There she was, in the front row cheering him on. His number one fan through everything. At home he'd be practicing a song. She'd be there to listen every time. Y/n was the best thing that ever happened to him, he didn't know what he'd do without her. He promised her that he'd never change. That he'd always love her and make time for her when he became famous.

After high school, they were still together. Guess people could call them high school sweethearts. Eddie's band was slowly getting more popular, he even started releasing his own songs. Y/n would always be the first to hear them. It wasn't easy though, trying to get deals and venues to play at. All that music artist kind of stuff, since Eddie didn't really like it. He'd rather have Y/n be their manager but she couldn't. Their band was always busy, he barely had time for normal life things. Like going to the beach, watching movies or going on proper dates with his girlfriend.

That's when Y/n came into play. She was there every step of the way, right by his side. Without her he would've gone mental ages ago. He wouldn't be where he was now if she wasn't with him, he was sure of it. Although lately, he was dealing with a lot more stress then usual. They were on tour and it was chaotic. Worrying about where they'd sleep that night. Always moving, having to get to places on time but having to practice in their free time too. That's why she tagged along. But no matter how hard Y/n tried to comfort him, it just wasn't working like it use too. He'd push her away, saying he was busy or he needed to practice. She was lucky if he even spoke a sentence to her, but still she had his back. Hopefully after this tour, things would slightly go back to normal. As normal as a rockstars life could get.

It was the night before a concert in LA. Y/n had gone out with a couple of her friends that flew over for the weekend to catch up. They went to this restaurant, had a couple drinks and talked over dinner. It was good since she was always cramped into a trailer or standing backstage of a massive concert. It was around eight at night and she had just gotten back. Gareth, Jeff and some others were chilling and talking outside.

"Hey guys. Have you seen Eddie."

"Yeah, yup he should be in his room." Gareth answered, smiling at her before he talked to Jeff again. Saying goodbye and night to them, she walked off towards their room. They were actually lucky enough to get half decent rooms since they were part of the venue. There was a lounge when you first entered their space and then their rooms where connected. It was actually really cute and smart for bands. To all share a lounge but have separate rooms for privacy. She knocked on the door but got no answer so she began digging through her purse for the keys. Once unlocking the door, she closed it behind her and slipped her shoes off as well as her coat.

The lounge was empty, but their room door was closed so that was probably where he was. If he wasn't asleep, hopefully they could spend some time with each other. Sometimes she missed the simple things like holding him and grabbing lunch together, but of course she was so proud of him. More than anything really.

Gently, she tapped on the door so that if he was asleep he wouldn't wake up. Afterwards she slowly opened it. There Eddie was at the edge of their bed, shirtless, pulling his pants up quickly as he turned to look at her at an alarmingly fast speed. At first she was confused at his sudden reaction to her returning but her questions were soon answered when she looked behind him. It was something she'd never expect from him. Some blonde girl underneath their sheets, most probably naked. Y/n just stood there in shock, no words were spoken from her. She couldn't talk, even if she wanted too.

Eddie knew how bad he had messed up. And god he wanted to punch himself over and over again repeatedly. Even with all the alcohol in his system, he regret it. He'd never regretted anything more in his life. Y/n was still struggling to get a word out through all her tears. Maybe this was just a cruel dream, she'd wake up and he'd be right beside her, holding her tightly in his arms. But it wasn't, it never would be. This was never going to work, at least not with her being around.

"Y/n, I'm sorry." He managed to say, his eyes filling with tears of his own. He ran his hands through his hair, pulling at the strands as he walked over to her. "Please, Y/n, ple-"

"No!" She spat at him, rejecting his hand by pushing it away from her. "I don't care how drunk you are, I never would've done this to you." Why would he ever do something like this. If it was because of how drunk he was, then why was he drinking so much in the first place. It made no sense. Was he bored of her, did she do something wrong. Was she not good enough?

"I've done nothing but been there for you. Through everything! Since day one Eddie!" There was so much emotions bottled up inside her, she didn't even want to look at him. "But I guess you're too cool and famous for me now?"

"No that's not it at all, Y/n please!" He cried, attempting to grab her hand again but she stepped back, shaking her head.

"I'm leaving, I'll collect my things when I feel like it." She then spun around, rushing out the room to go grab her purse so she could leave. Eddie followed behind her, begging to explain himself, begging for her to stop and talk to him. He chased after her until they reached Gareth and the others which is when he stopped. She needed time alone, hopefully she'd talk to him tomorrow or something.

"What's wrong?" Jeff asked, concerned at the expression she had on her face and Eddie's helpless cries for her attention.

"Good luck with your concerts." She answered, trying her best to smile at him, but there was no hiding her emotions now. There was no use in stopping her, she wasn't going to forgive him or give him a second chance. When she left, he ran back to their room where the girl was still getting changed. He was so angry with himself, what was wrong with him.

"Get the fuck out of my room!" He snapped, causing her to grab her stuff and leave immediately in fear. The second she left, he slammed the door shut, storming over to the table with everything. He had to release his anger somehow so he started pushing everything off it, completely messing up the room. His clothes were everywhere, all his sheet music scattered and his belongings laying on the floor. What did he do?

A few days later when Gareth dropped off her things, he tried to convince her to talk to Eddie. Apparently it took Gareth an hour to find all her things since the whole room was trashed. But Y/n had already made up her mind. She didn't want to see him anytime soon, maybe never again.

She had moved back in with her parents after the breakup until she found herself an affordable apartment. It was over half a year later after everything happened. A long half a year, a painful one too. Y/n barely left her room and apartment in that time period. She was always crying in her room, crying out of her room. She couldn't do anything or go anywhere without being in a mood, or having the urge to breakdown into tears. She'd lost the person she least expected to lose.

It wasn't any better for Eddie either. He was always drinking or getting involved with drugs because it was too much to handle. All the touring, performing and having to live without her being there everyday. That was the biggest mistake of his life and he made sure to remember that. Well he could never forget it anyways. His life was unstable now, always having one night stands with girls he met at bars after drinking to numb the pain. Nothing seemed to help though, nothing was enough. He just needed her back, that's all. That would make everything so much better, but it would never happen.

It was just another meaningless day. Y/n was making herself some lunch since she had slept in quite late when there was a knock on the front door. Dropping everything in her hands, she walked over to the door, swinging it open to be met by a very familiar face.

"We need to talk Y/n." They said, walking into her apartment. Instantly she knew something was up.

"Gareth, if you're hear to tell me to talk to him it's not gonna happ-." She ranted on, but was cut off by him.

"It's not that, it's-" he stuttered, tears beginning to fill his eyes. She tilted her head, waiting for his answer. "He's gone Y/n, he's dead." Her heart felt like it shattered into millions of pieces. It couldn't be true. How? That was last thing she expected him to tell her. Just when she thought things couldn't get any worse. Now she had lost him, properly lost him, for good.

"How? Gareth, what do you mean, what happened?" He remained silent to prevent the tears from spilling. Instead he walked into the living room, grabbing the remote for the TV to turn it on. He continued to change channels till he landed on a news one that was talking about a new headline. Y/n followed him, biting her lip to hold back her sobs.

The leader of the beloved and popular band Corroded Coffin, Edward Wayne Munson, has sadly passed away this morning in his apartment. We are all devastated about this tragic news. The officials are still yet to confirm the cause of death but it was most likely due to overdose. We send our regards to his fellow band mates, friends and family.

Gareth then switched the TV off, turning to look at her. They both stood there in silence until he decided to say something.

"You know he did really love you Y/n, he was lost without you, he wasn't himself anymore. I guess I'm not surprised he took the easy way out." He explained, fiddling with his rings. "It wasn't your fault, I just wish it could've been different you know."

He pulled her in for a hug, holding her up as she couldn't stand properly, almost falling to her knees. Everything seemed to be going great a year ago, but it was crazy how it all changed. Being a rockstar wasn't as easy as they'd hope. Guess AC/DC was right. It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock'n'roll.
