Better than Him

"Psst Y/n! Oi Y/n!" Someone called from behind her desk. The teacher hushed them but that didn't stop the person. After they called her name a couple more times Y/n finally heard. When the teacher turned around again to face the board she took the chance to find whoever was trying to get her attention. She wasn't surprised who it was, James a friend of her boyfriend.

"What!?"

"Your boyfriend wants you to wait outside the room when class ends." James answered a little too loudly, wiggling his eyebrows. The teacher had caught James talking to her, scolding them both as chuckles washed through the class. Y/n ended up being swapped with another student further towards the back of the classroom where James couldn't annoy her. She picked up her things, heading over to her new assigned seat, then slumping down on her chair. Now she was moved away from her friend and next to the one and only, infamous Eddie Munson.

It's not that she didn't like him, he was no where near as bad as people made him out to be. It was more that he would talk and flirt with her around the school, and her boyfriend wasn't very fond of Y/n hanging out with other guys he didn't know very well. Even just other guys in general. She was too focused on writing notes down that she hadn't noticed Eddie's victorious grin and little celebration. For the remainder of the lesson, the room was silent until the bell went for the end of the day. Poor Eddie had spent the whole time contemplating what to say to her and hadn't got any work done.

The minute she stepped out the classroom, her boyfriend was there leaning against one of the lockers. His smile grew when they made eye-contact, he then met her halfway, resting his arm around her shoulder and giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"I was thinking, you and me over at my place now?"

"I don't know Billy, I've got a lot of homework to do." Y/n explained, sadly looking up at him. He sighed, stuffing his hand in the pocket of his jeans.

"C'mon, it'll be fun, I mean I can help you with homework later." Eventually he changed her mind, hiding his satisfied smirk. Eddie was not far behind them, listening in on their conversation, he never liked Billy. He also knew what his intentions were, but decided to keep his mouth shut. Billy would beat his ass, plus he had no idea what their relationship was like and if she maybe felt the same way.

"Eddie wait up!" A friend of his yelled, causing Y/n to look over her shoulder. She gave him a friendly wave and smile in which he returned. Billy saw as well and gave him a deadly glare, walking faster pulling her along with him.

"Don't talk to that freak!" He demanded giving her a stern look. "And if he ever talks to you, tell me!"

It was sometime after five o'clock, already getting dark outside when Eddie had to take the trash out. Lifting the bin lid, a Chevrolet pulled up to Y/n's driveway across the road. He then saw Y/n getting out the car, slamming the door shut but soon being stopped by a very angry Billy.

"Don't walk away from me Y/n!" He growled, grabbing her wrist and harshly yanking her back.

"Billy let go! You're hurting me." She begged, attempting to loosen his grip with her other hand but he wouldn't budge. Instead, tightening it so much that there was definitely going to be red marks. Eddie really wanted to interfere, but he knew that it would only make matters worse. Luckily for him and Y/n, one of her parents opened the door immediately making Billy let go. Without saying another word she walked inside, her mother closing the door behind them. Frightened Billy would see him, Eddie crouched down behind the bin, slightly peaking his head over it. After quickly scanning the area, Billy got back into the car speeding off into the distance. When he made sure the coast was clear, Eddie went back into his trailer not being able to forget about the event that just occurred.

The next day

Eddie sat down at his usual seat, pulling out his books that he rarely ever used. Ten minutes into class and the chair beside him was still empty. Hopefully Y/n was okay and that she'd be back soon, the best part of his day was when he could admire her from afar. Wishing someday it would be more then that, but for now it was good enough.

His head sprung up when the sound of the door opening was made. There she was the girl he missed so much. Although she didn't seem herself, looking like she hadn't slept at all last night, heavy bags under her eyes.

"Sorry I'm late, just family things." The teacher nodded, asking her to take her seat quietly. Everyone was staring at her, causing her feel uncomfortable and he could tell. Not thinking, Eddie slid his books off the table, making a loud thumping noise on the ground. Everybody's attention was then drawn to him, allowing Y/n to sit down in peace. "Why'd you do that." She leaned over whispering into his ear.

"It was accidental. I swear sweetheart." Eddie replied, throwing his hands up as a joke. His smile grew when he heard her beautiful laugh. It was so genuine and he loved the way her face lit up when she did. "Did I just make the Y/n laugh?"

"Sorry, I just had too."

"Don't be sorry, you look beautiful when you do." Eddie assured her. Y/n turned away to hide the blush that crawled up her neck onto her cheeks. He was such a gentleman, much more kinder than Billy, but she couldn't bring Eddie into this. He'd only get hurt. Later on after their conversation, the bell went dismissing everyone for lunch.

"Hey Y/n! Wait up."

"Sure! What is it Eddie?" She questioned while holding her books close to her chest.

"I um, was just wondering if you were ok after yesterday? You know since I'm kind of your neighbour?" Her smile instantly dropped into a frown and she became very fidgety. "Do you um, want to talk about it?"

"So now you're being nosy!?" Y/n stormed out the classroom with Eddie following behind her.

"No! No I wasn't, I promise. It's jus-" he was then cut off by her apologising for lashing out.

"Who am I kidding, we were pretty loud weren't we." He nodded, now walking beside her. They continued to walk in an awkward silence since their lockers were fairly near one another. Then Y/n remembered that basketball practice would've ended by now and Billy could appear from around the corner any second and Eddie would be busted. "It's fine though, we're ok thanks Eddie."

"I don't want to force you to tell me anything, but it didn't seem like you were." Just the last thing she wanted, Billy walked out into the hallway, spotting them both. A mischievous smirk on his face as he clenched his fists. Y/n's face turned pale, she couldn't even control him if hell was let loose.

"Eddie you should go. Please." Y/n insisted, which he hesitantly did, quickly passing Billy. Now she was on her own, hopefully he was in a good mood before so that he wouldn't be as pissed. "Billy I don't want to talk right now." Unlike Eddie, her boyfriend didn't listen as he got closer. Well Eddie actually didn't completely do as she asked either since he was standing just around the corner out of view. After a bit more bickering Eddie couldn't take it anymore, showing himself once more.

"She said she doesn't want to talk!"

Billy spun around, shocked to see the freak standing up to him. Eddie looked pretty nervous not knowing what he just got into, but he was willing to protect Y/n at all costs.

"How about you walk away right now and I won't hurt you?" Eddie denied his offer, standing his ground while Y/n gave him pleading eyes to stay out of it. "So what! We get into an argument and now your running around with the school freak!" Slowly Billy stepped closer, until he was right in front of him. By this time there was a crowd beginning to form around the three. He spat at the ground beside Eddie, looking up once more into his eyes with complete anger.

"Leave Y/n alone, you hear me?" This was definitely his last chance, but Eddie wasn't thinking straight, ever.

"What if I don't?" Everyone in the room could guess what happened next. Billy pulled his fist back, swinging it right into Eddie's face, knocking him back and taking him by surprise. "Jesus Christ!" He yelled holding onto his nose, but he wouldn't give in that easily. Winding up his arm, Eddie retaliated, giving the bully what he deserved. Feeling humiliated, Billy launched at him, tackling him too the ground and throwing punches over and over again.

"Billy stop! Billy! Are you crazy!" Y/n cried, running over to them, ignoring everyone else. The last thing she expected was to be elbowed right in the face when she tried to pull him off Eddie. "What the hell! Is, wrong with you!"

Finally a couple teachers came rushing through the crowd, keeping them apart. Eddie still lying on the ground in immense pain, there were going to be a lot of bruises all over his face. After a long walk to the sick bay, they eventually arrived getting Eddie lots of ice and medical treatment to ensure nothing was broken. Once they were done checking up on him, Y/n was allowed to enter. The entire time she felt terrible, not being able to stop Billy earlier and even just getting Eddie involved.

When she went inside, he was sitting on the bed holding ice, having to move it around his face for every area that he got punched. Even after what had happened, he still managed to have that beaming smile upon seeing her. "Are you ok sweetheart? Did he hurt you?"

"I'm fine Eddie! Look what he did to you, don't worry about me." Was he crazy, she got an elbow to the face while he got a beating and he was worried about her? "Why did you do that?"

"Do what?" She pointed to his face and the bruises. "A girl like you shouldn't ever be treated that way." Y/n then took a seat next to him, he was right.

"You know, I can treat you better than him."
