Reader's POV

[ Senior Year of Highschool ]

I sat next to Don as we both ate.

We didn't have school, and we woke up late so it was just us.

alone.

silence.

crap.

I blushed furiously as I nervously ate.

Don was shaking, I felt it.

"What's wrong?"
I asked, building up the courage to ask.

"N-Nothing,"
He said, turning away from me, his face red.

I nodded and went back to eating.

Don soon turned to me.
"W-Who are you going to prom with? Ray?"
He asked.

"No... Ray’s going with Norman,"
I said softly.

"Emma?"
He then asked.

"She's going somewhere else with the others,
I'm going alone."
I said.

He seemed to hesitate, almost speak, then he turned quiet.

"Cool,"
He said, probably out of panic.

"I guess."
I murmured.

Don was a year younger than me.
Lord, why did I have a crush on a younger boy? It makes me look bad!

He attracted all the attention of the girls, some boys, of course, around him.

I mean, who wouldn't think he's cute?

He quickly apologized.
"S-Sorry! I mean... would you like to go with me?"
He asked.

My eyes widened slightly.

"I'm going with some friends, Gilda too,"
He quickly added.

"Oh..."
I said softly

"It's okay. I'll be fine by myself."
I muttered, standing up and leaving the room.

I could almost see his puppy frown.

I gulped but kept walking, washing my dish and hurrying up to my room.

Violet was there, chilling on my bed as she ate crackers.

"I wanna cry,"
I groaned.

"Boohoo cracker,"
She said nonchalantly, looking at the tv.

I deadpanned and hopped onto the bed, resting my head on her chest.

She ran her hand through my hair.

"It'll be okay, cracker. Whatever it is going on with you and your teenage shit,"
She said.

"So comforting,"
I said softly.

She chuckled.
"You're welcome,"
She said.

I smiled and curled up next to her, looking at the tv.

I closed my eyes gently.

Don... how could I ever get with him?

[ At School ]

I sighed as I followed Don and Emma inside. Emma rushed to her locker while Don stayed at my side.

Our lockers were close to each others.

The girls turned to him and blushed, some gathering around us, well him.

He was always the center of attention.
He was good looking, that was why.

I sighed and walked faster to avoid them. Don frowned and hurried up to catch up with me, he hesitantly slipped his hand into mine and my face burst into flames.

I tried to hide my face with my sleeves, but it’s not like he was looking at me.

I took my hand out of his.

I couldn't...
Why couldn't I?
The fear of rejection.

I took a deep breath and stopped at my locker, opening it quickly as if I could hide in there.

. . . . . . .
. . . . . . .

As we were heading home, Don and I stopped at the ice cream shop.

Emma, Norman, and Ray went ahead.

"I-I can pay,"
He offered, putting his hands on my shoulders.

I tensed and he quickly let go.

"S-Sorry,"
He said.

"No you're good! I'll pay, it's okay,"
I squeaked.

He shook his head.

We argued until we were at the cash register and the worker was about to kick us out.

Don paid.

I sighed and trudged out with my ice cream.

Don followed with a proud smirk.

I rolled my eyes, then stopped him as I took my money out and gave some to him.

Then.

I ran.

"Y/n!"
He groaned and chased after me.

I burst into laughter as he caught up with me, wrapping his arms around me with a pout.

Cute, haha.

I smiled and poked his nose.
The action caused him to get flustered and let me go

I continued running with a giggle.

He smiled and ran after me.

I reached the house and ran inside.

I tripped on the carpet, aaand my foot tripped Don.

Our ice creams had fallen out of our hands and onto the ground.

Don's hands were protectively around my head, which was buried in his chest.

Mmm that's a good smell!

Apart from that, I think it would've been okay to die.

My ice cream was gone.
Don was right on top of me.

Yup.
I had a good life.

"A-Are you okay?"
Don asked.

We didn't dare to move.

My hands were wrapped around his chest.
His knee had pushed up my skirt a teensy bit.
And now, I think that we should've probably moved.

"Y-Yeah. Are you?"
I asked.

He nodded slightly.

I could feel him breathe against my neck, causing me to shiver.

He lifted his head.
"Im sorry,"
He said, looking me in the eyes

"It's okay,"
I said, surprised I didn't stutter.

"You're really pretty Y/n,"
He then said, seeming to have wanted to say it.

My face burst into flames and I covered my face.

"You're very handsome, Don!"
I exclaimed.

I peeked to see he was smiling.
I smiled slightly.

"Get closer already,"
We heard a monotone yell.

Ray.

We both looked over to see him and Norman smirking at us.

Don quickly got off of me and I stood up, looking at them.

"Have fun,"
He said with a wave.
Norman simply smiled.

Ray chuckled before pulling Norman back into the room by his tie, causing Norman to glare at him.

We stood there awkwardly, looking at the ice cream.

Both of our faces were red.

I took a deep breath then turned to him.

"Don,"
I started.

"Yeah?"
He asked.

"Do you like Gilda?"
I asked, a hint of teasing in my voice.

He looked confused, but relieved nonetheless.

"Gilda? No, I don't,"
He said with a chuckle.

I wish I could've hidden my smile.

I knew he wasn't lying. I knew he was saying the truth.
I knew that because I knew him.

"What are you smiling about?"
He asked with a grin.

"N-Nothing,"
I lied.

And he knew I was lying.
He knew that because he knew me.
He knew that because he loves me.

He chuckled.
"Don't lie to me. Why are you smiling?"
He asked, poking my cheek.

I turned my head away and he chuckled.

"What's pretty Y/n smiling about?"
He cooed with a grin.

"S-Shut up,"
I muttered, keeping my back to him.

He laughed.

"D-Fo you like me?"
I then asked.

He was silent, I could almost hear his heartbeat racing.

No, that was mine.

"I do..."
It was so silent I thought it might have been my imagination.

I turned to him, my eyes wide.

"I have... ever since we were little,"
He said, rubbing the back of his neck with a sheepish chuckle.

His brown eyes glimmered and his smile was there.

"G-Good! I like you too!"
I exclaimed.

We both looked at each other's red faces.

Then we both laughed.

Don placed his hand on my cheek and kissed my forehead.

I shook my head and kissed his lips softly.

His eyes fluttered shut and he held me in his arms.

The World could've ended and I wouldn't have cared.
Because at least I would have Don by my side.
