14] Trump Card

Flashback

"So this is the gate," I said in awe as the trio and I stood in front of it.
We came to the bars and tried to look out.

"I wonder what it's like out there..." I muttered.
"It isn't as interesting as I hoped. Let's go back before they find us," Norman said, seeming to have been scared to get in trouble.

"Okay," Emma and I said, going over to him with smiles on our faces.

Flashback End

"I volunteered. I went to her. No, it's more accurate to say that I sold myself," Ray replied.
"Why?"
"To prepare for escape. Everything was to prepare for this escape we're planning now."

Trump Card
切り札

"To prepare... for this escape?" Norman asked.
"Yeah, to prepare. To learn about the enemy or to gather things... It's most efficient to do it from the inside. That's why I sold myself to the enemy," Ray said.

"I knew I had a chance of succeeding. "I am a golden egg that the farm has spent time and effort to cultivate. Therefore you would want to avoid getting rid of me midway." Sure enough, Mom agreed. She cares more about profit than rules. I asked for two things. First, to not ship me out. In return, I promised to help her. Second, for rewards if I gave results," Ray explained.

"What rewards did you get?" Norman asked.

"Various junk. And if it's not available in the house, she obtains it for me," he replied.

My eyes widened in surprise.
"So you could get what was impossible..." Norman muttered.

"Yeah, I was testing that. Also, I wanted to probe into the outside world. I found out that she could obtain a lot of things, as long as they weren't dangerous. But they were old models," Ray replied.

"Then... when you said you had an idea regarding breaking the tracking devices-"
"I've seen the actual device," Ray cut him off.

"I've also experimented. I figured out how to break it after working on it for many years. I can break it. I swear... that the tracking devices can definitely be nullified. Do you understand? The person you see before you right now... is the strongest card you'll ever have," Ray said, I knew he was smirking.

I smirked as well. What a genius.

"I can hurt Mom from the inside. I have the means to nullify the tracking devices. I might not know everything, but I have more information... necessary for the escape than you can imagine. The strongest card. Ever since I found out the truth about the house, I've been preparing. Without having anyone... whether it was Mom or you guys, notice," Ray paused.

"I tricked Conny, who didn't know better... took Little Bunny... And made you three go to the gate. Yeah, like you said. All of this... was to make sure you three didn't get killed," Ray said.

I felt a weird feeling.
I was happy. But he sacrificed so many people... for us.

"Back to the matter at hand. I'm not an enemy to either of you. But I'm also not an ally. I've been controlling the situation without revealing my position because I can't lend my hand to a stupid plan. I have one condition. I'll be your trump card. I'll give you all of the information I have, and I'll also leak lies to Mom, just like you wanted," Ray told him.

I waited for the condition.
"What's the condition?" Norman asked.
"Trick Y/n and Emma," Ray told him.

My eyes widened slightly.

Then I smirked, even a genius couldn't trick me (well right now), the person overhearing everything he's saying.

"We'll pretend we're taking everyone, but at the last moment, we'll ditch them," Ray said.
{ Ditch them?! Not on my watch! I'm not leaving anyone behind! }

"Even if we're taking others, it should only be Don and Gilda. Everyone else needs to be left behind," Ray said.

"So you're telling me to give up on taking everyone. The training helped everyone grow more than we expected. "But everyone's moves were pretty good." You said it yourself, you meant that, right? Even so...?" Norman paused.

"Even so, it doesn't change the fact that they are a burden," Ray said which made my heart clench.
"You said that you were going to help us," Norman said.
"And this is the way I'm helping," Ray replied calmly.

"Otherwise, you, Y/n, and Emma can die here at the farm," he said with a scowl.

"I thought you didn't want us to get killed," Norman said.
"If you're going to get killed as soon as we escape, I'd prefer you to get shipped out. What are you going to do? Will you accept my conditions?" Ray asked.

"Got it," Norman said after a while.

"Your word now... is a lie... then..." I couldn't hear the rest. I heard footsteps coming closer.

I scurried up and ran off before I could be seen.
I stopped at a corner and held my breath as I watched Ray go in the opposite direction.

{ Ray was- is the traitor, and he plans on only getting us out alive. }

Side Story Fin:

Not Alone

I grabbed the cup when I felt a tug on it. I put it to our ears.

"Hello?" we heard Emma's booming voice.
I jumped making Norman chuckle.

"Now we can talk even if I'm outside!" Emma exclaimed.
Both Norman and I smiled.
We ended up talking most of the night.

Finale.
