Reader's POV

"What demons are?"

"Aren't they just those kind of monsters?"

"They can't maintain their shape and form unless they eat humans.
They're monsters that don't have shapes,"
Norman said, my eyes widened slightly.

"No one knows what they looked like at first.
Probably something similar to bacteria. Bacteria mostly multiply by binary fission.
They don't change. They just increase as clones.
Then how did such bacteria change and evolve?
The answer was in spontaneous mutation and horizontal transmission."

"The horizontal transmission of a gene... absorbs the genes of other organisms (sometimes transcending species).
Their evolution was similar to that. They evolve by eating. They absorb the genes of what they eat... and inherit the genes' characteristics."

"If they eat a bug, they turn into something resembling a bug.
If they eat fish, they turn into something resembling a fish. By repeating that, they obtained various characteristics... And evolved into various shapes."

"And they eventually ate humans. By doing so, they acquired the form, high intelligence... language and culture of humans.
Humans became their favorite food. And they rapidly surpassed humans. Became humans' natural enemies.
Humans feared them. An overpowering existence that evolved at astounding speed. And called them by various names-- demons, monsters, devils, gods."

"But they were also just creatures. And their characteristics weren't exactly beneficial.
There are individual differences... and it's not like they return to their original form...
but they cannot maintain their characteristics unless they keep eating."

"The reason they eat humans... is because unless they do, they can't keep their form or intelligence.
After discovering and desiring human taste, intelligence and form... they continued eating humans. Even after the formation of the promise. That's the real nature of demons."
Norman told us.

"They eat to evolve?"
"Just from eating?"
"And for that... they eat humans"

"That's why there are so many different forms and shapes,"
Nat muttered.

"And that's why they raise us... by creating farms,"
Nigel said.

I took a deep breath, everything had started to get blurry again.
I leaned against the wall, and everything faded.

~

I could still hear everyone talking, my eyes just weren't opening for some reason.

Then...I could see.
But I was back at... I had no idea.

The shelter? Everything was destroyed.

"Y/n,"
I heard someone call out.

Everyone else's voices faded.

I looked around.
"Yuugo!"
I said with surprise.

"Hey,"
he said, sitting down next to me.

This was another dream...

"Hey,"
I said, turning to him.

It hurt to see his face.
It hurt to see his smile...

"What are you doing here?"
I asked.

"Visiting you."
he said.

I chuckled.
"Yeah, obviously. But why?"
I asked.

"Because that conversation was booooring anyway! And I wanted to clear things up,"
He smiled, poking my forehead.

I smiled slightly.
"Yeaaah, it was... Clear what up?"
I asked with excitement.

"How you're my daughter,"
He said simply.
I nodded and looked at my bracelet.

"When I was hiding at the shelter... I went out to hunt and these damn demons found me.
They brought me to this base or whatever. They needed more kids at the farms. I honestly don't think they even knew who I was or anything! I wrote that note way back when. But... I tried to take you with me back to the shelter.
They caught me each time."
He said with a groan, deadpanning.

"Um... I wanted to name you "Y/n"... so I wrote the note and tried to convince them. Those brainless bastards never listened to me, so I just kept the note."
He continued, I smiled.

"They soon stopped me from seeing you too. Then, one day I woke up back at the forest. I didn't know what happened, I thought it was a dream or I had finally gone crazy.
But I knew it wasn't. The number, was always in my head, 62149.
And because I had the note and bracelet."
He took a deep breath, and I realized he was trying not to cry.

I hugged him tightly.
I could actually feel him...

We were then in a different room.
The broken one.
The one that looked like Satan wandered inside of it and told his demons to do whatever to the place.

I looked around in confusion.
Then, I saw it.

"Each year... each year on your birthday. I would add the age you were turning to the wall."
I saw the numbers.

The 12 was never fully made.

"Why not?"
I muttered, my hand tracing over the 1 of the 12.

"That day I gave up.
But then you and everyone wandered in. I didn't know at first, but when you and Emma were talking that crazy stuff about going to Goldy Pond together.
That's when I noticed this,"
He said, poking the small mole on my neck.

"Eh? What does that have anything to do with this? You didn't even notice my brand or name first?"
I asked with a chuckle,

"Oh shush. Of course I did! This just added on and I knew I was right."
He told me, and I narrowed my eyes at him.

He copied my action and we burst out laughing.

"Why'd you never tell me?"
I then asked.

"It would've been creepy if an old man suddenly told you you were his daughter, don't ya think?"
He said and I nodded.

"Yeah... true."
I chuckled.

He smiled.
"Yeah, but anyway. You've had that mole right there since you were a baby. That's how I knew."

"Wow..."
I muttered, looking at the necklace.

"Y/n..."
He started.

"Yeah?"
I asked.

"I'm sorry I couldn't be in most of your life. I'm sorry–"
I hugged him tightly, causing him to cut himself off.

"You don't need to be sorry. You've helped me through so much,"
I said with a smile.

He looked surprised but hugged back, holding me tightly.

"Even if the time we spent together was short... I'll never forget any moment,"
I said with a smile.

"Don't you dare,"
He muttered, taking a deep breath.

I chuckled slightly, smiling at him.
"You be good. And don't you dare kiss Ray every second, I don't want to see that. It was horrible seeing it before. And I don't want to see it now, especially that I'm dead,"
He told me.

I grinned.
"I'll do what I want, fa-ther~"
I sang.

He narrowed his eyes at me but I only did the same until he gave up.

"Whatever."
He said, crossing his arms.

I smiled, clasping my hands together mischievously.

"Child, no,"
He told me.

"Child, yes,"
I said, nodding my head.

"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
He reached for something and I sprinted out, laughing.

"You can't kill me! This is just a dream!"
I called out.

"Then why are you running?"
He deadpanned, chasing after me.

"Because this is fun!"
I said and I heard him laugh.

I then stopped as I was now out of the shelter.
Everything was now how it was again, destroyed.

I frowned slightly. There was no one else.

"Yuugo!"
I called out, opening the hatch.

"Yuugo?"
I muttered with confusion.

The scenery changed once more.
Yuugo helping a baby girl to walk, he was much younger now, and the scene brought tears to my eyes.

"Hey, hey, careful,"
Yuugo said, trying his best to not hurt the small girl as he tried to help her walk.

"Papa!"
The girl said, letting go of his hands and willingly walking on her own. Yuugo followed after her quickly and I smiled.

This is what could've been...

I turned around and hugged Yuugo as he disappeared and I soon woke up, hugging someone tightly.

"It's okay. It's okay,"
I heard someone whisper softly.
