----- January 11th, 2014 - Washington D.C -----

Sam had just gotten back from his daily jog.

He opens his fridge, breathing hard and pulls out some orange juice. He goes to drink it but is stopped by a knock at his door. He puts the orange juice down and heads towards his door.

Sam pulls up the blinds first, to see Steve, Y/N, and Natasha.

He opens the door and says to Steve, "..Hey, man."

"I'm sorry about this. We need a place to lay low," Steve tells him. 

"Everyone we know is trying to kill us," Nat adds.

 "..Not everyone," Sam says before letting them in.

Steve was in the bathroom washing his hands.

He looks up into the mirror to see Natasha sitting on the bed drying her hair with a towel.

"You okay?," he asks her as he steps out the bathroom.

"Yeah..." 

Seeing through her lie, Steve moves over and takes a seat next to her, "What's going on?" 

"..When I first joined SHIELD. I thought I was going straight. But I guess I just traded in the KGB for HYDRA. I thought I knew whose lies I was telling, but I guess I can't tell the difference anymore."

"There's a chance you might be in the wrong business," Steve uses her line against her with a smile.

She chuckles dryly, "I owe you." 

"It's okay." 

"If it was the other way around, and it was down to me to save your life, now you be honest with me,.. would you trust me to do it?" 

"I would now. And I'm always honest." 

"Well, you seem pretty chipper for someone who just found out they died for nothing," she says sarcastically. 

"Weell, guess I just like to know who I'm fighting."

Sam appears in the doorway, "I made breakfast. If you guys eat that sort of thing. You better get some before Y/N eats it all."

"So, the question is, who at SHIELD could launch a domestic missile strike?"

Everyone was in the kitchen now.

Steve was sitting at the table, Natasha leaning against the counter, and Sam was buttering some toast.

As for Y/N.. He was mowing down on a plate of bacon.

Just bacon.

"Pierce," Y/N says with a semi-full mouth.

"Who happens to be sitting on top of the most secure building in the world," Natasha says. 

"But he's not working alone. Zola's algorithm was on the Lemurian Star," Steve adds.

"..So was Jasper Sitwell." 

"So, the real question is, how do the two most wanted people in Washington kidnap a SHIELD officer in broad daylight?," Steve asks rhetorically.

"The answer is, you don't," Sam drops a folder with the words 'EXO-7 FALCON' on the table in front of them.

"What's this?" 

"Call it a résumé."

 Natasha pulls a photo out of it, "Is this Bakhmala? The Khalid Khandil mission, that was you?," she hands it to Steve, "You didn't say he was a Pararescue." 

Steve looks at it, noticing the man standing next to Sam, "Is this Riley?" 

"Yeah.." 

"I heard they couldn't bring in the choppers because of the RPGs. What did you use? A stealth chute?," asks Nat.

"No," Sam points at the folder, "These."

Y/N grabs it after wiping his hand, "I thought you said you were a pilot."

"I never said pilot."

"I can't ask you to do this, Sam. You got out for a good reason," Steve says. 

"Dude, Captain America AND Superman need my help. There's no better reason to get back in," Sam tells him.

"Where are we gonna get our hands on one of those things?," Y/N asks.

"The last one is at Fort Meade. Behind three guarded gates and a 12-inch steel wall." 

"Won't be a problem," Y/N says with a smile as his eyes glow.

Jasper Sitwell and Senator Stern can be seen exiting a building with bodyguards behind them.

"Listen, I got to fly home tonight because uh I got some constituency problem and I got to press the flesh," The Senator says.

"Any constituent in particular, Mr. Senator?," Sitwell asks him.

"Uh No, not really. Twenty-three, kind of hot. Real hot, you know? Wants to be a reporter, I think. I don't know. Who listens at that point?" 

"Doesn't sound like much of a problem to me."

"Really? Because she's killing my back. But this isn't the place to talk about it," The Senator gets distracted and grabs the SHIELD pin in Sitwell's Jacket, "This is a nice pin." 

"Thank you.."

"Come here," The Senator pulls Sitwell in for a hug and whispers in his ear, "Hail HYDRA." 

The Senator goes to walk away down a staircase when a hitch or pop appears in his step, "See, it's right there..." 

"Yeah, I just saw that." 

"Should I get it checked?" 

"I think you should." 

The Senator finally walks away, and at the same time Sitwell's phone rings. He pulls it out of his coat pocket and checks the caller ID.

It said 'Alexander Pierce'.

Sitwell turns to his guards, "I need a minute. Bring the car around."

When they walk away, he answers the call quickly, "Yes, sir?" 

But the voice on the other end clearly wasn't Pierce, "Agent Sitwell, how was lunch? I hear the crab cakes here are delicious." 

"Who is this?" 

"The good-looking guy in the sunglasses, your 10 o'clock," But when Sitwell looks the wrong way, the man says, "Your other 10 o'clock."

Sam was sitting over at a table with a Tea in hand, "There you go."

"What do you want?"

"You're gonna go around the corner to your right. There's a gray car two spaces down.. You and I are gonna take a ride." 

"And why would I do that?," Sitwell asks. 

"Because that tie looks really expensive, and I'd hate to mess it up."

Sitwell looks down at his Tie to see a laser sight of what is most likely a sniper pointed directly at him.

Sitwell is thrown through the door to a roof.

He rushes to stand as Y/N comes walking toward him with Steve and Y/N behind him.

"Zola's algorithm. Talk!," Y/N demands. 

"N-Never heard of it," Sitwell denies. 

Sitwell keeps backing up as Y/N walks toward him. Closer and closer to the edge of the roof.

Steve asks, "What were you doing on the Lemurian Star?" 

"I was throwing up. I get seasick," Sitwell nearly trips back off the roof before Y/N grabs him by the collar, Sitwell smiles and says, "Is this little display meant to insinuate that you're gonna throw me off the roof? Because it's really not your style, L/N." 

Y/N smiles at him. He then pulls Sitwell back up and wipes his suit down. Sitwell then looks over to Steve and Natasha and shrugs as if to say he was right.

Unfortunately, he wasn't, because the next thing he knew, Y/N had pushed him over the edge.

Y/N looks over the edge, "You know nothing.."

Steve and Natasha move up next to him as Steve casually asks, "Thought we were gonna let Nat do that?"

"It's fine, At least the push was impressive," Nat says.

Y/N looks at them with a straight face, "Do not goad the Superman."

The sounds of Sitwell screaming can be heard as he's tossed back up onto the roof by Sam in a Wingsuit. Sam lands and the Wings retract back into the pack.

The trio casually walk to the two of them.

Y/N says to Sam, "God that wingsuit's dope."

Sam shrugs, "I mean the wingsuit's nice, but imagine the things I could do with powers like yours."

"Abilities aren't what define a hero," Y/N tells him.

Y/N crouches in front of Sitwell, "Ready to talk?"

Sitwell lifts himself to his knees and holds his hand out in an attempt to keep him away, "Zola's algorithm is a program.. for choosing Insight's targets."

"What targets?," asks Steve. 

"You!," he then points at Y/N for a moment, "Him! ..A TV anchor in Cairo, the Under Secretary of Defense, a high school Valedictorian in Iowa City, Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange, anyone who's a threat to HYDRA. Now, or in the future."

"Stephen Strange? I feel like that name is gonna be important at some point..," Y/N mumbles to himself.

Steve again asks Sitwell, "In the future? How could it know?" 

Sitwell starts laughing, "How could it not? The 21st century is a digital book. Zola taught HYDRA how to read it. Your bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores! Zola's algorithm evaluates people's past to predict their future." 

"And what then?," Steve asks him. 

Sitwell looks momentarily distracted, "..Oh, my God.. Pierce is gonna kill me." 

Y/N grabs him by the collar as his eyes glow, "What then?!" 

"Th-Then the Insight helicarriers s-scratch people off the list.. A few m-million at a time..."

"HYDRA doesn't like leaks.."

From the drivers seat of the car, Sam tells Sitwell, "Then why don't you try sticking a cork in it?"

"Insight's launching in 16 hours. We're cutting it a little bit close here," Natasha says. 

"I know. We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the helicarriers directly," says Steve.

"What? Are you crazy? That is a terrible, terrible ide-" 

Sitwell was cut off by being forcefully pulled out the window of the car and in front of a speeding truck. Y/N covers Natasha as a few shots are fired in through the roof.

Sam hits the brake causing the person on the roof to get flung foward.

It was the Winter Soldier.

He twists in the air and scrapes along the floor on his knees. When he digs him metal fingers into the concrete, he comes to a complete stop.

Natasha pulls out a gun but before she has the chance to fire, A jeep rams into the back of the car. They go barreling toward the Winter Soldier but he flips up and grabs on the the rim of the windshield.

He punches through the windshield and rips the steering wheel off.

"Shit!," Sam yells.

Natasha finds the dropped gun and starts firing, missing as the Winter Soldier hops off the car and onto the jeep behind them. The jeep pulls back from the car before ramming it again.

This causes the car to swerve into the barrier to their left. 

The car flips.

Steve holds his shield against the door and grabs onto Sam before breaking the door, "Hang on!"

Y/N grabs Natasha and kicks the door off. They jump out and Y/N lands on his back.

The four of them scrape along the road for a bit, one of them on a door.

When they come to a stop, they quickly get up. The jeep parks just a few feet behind. A guy hops out and hands the Winter Soldier a grenade launcher.

The Winter Soldier aims and fires.

The shot goes flying into Y/N which sends him barreling into Steve, sending them off the side of the overpass and into a bus.

Nat and Sam take cover behind a truck. Nat takes fire at them. She hops over the barrier to the other road and jumps off the overpass just as The Winter Soldier shoots a car. Both the exploded car and Nat fall over to the road below.

Natasha fires a grapple into the underside of the overpass and swings into a full run.

Up above, The Winter Soldier walks to the other side of the overpass. He grabs a Assault Riffle from the guys with him and takes aim over the side.

But as Natasha runs near his line of fire, she notices his shadow casted on the ground.

The Winter Soldier sees Cap's Shield laying on the ground next to the bus. But before he has the time to do anything, Natasha sends a shot directly at his eye.

He ducks and pulls off his goggles. Which luckily had blocked the bullet from hitting his eye. He then stands and start firing round after round below. Seemingly not caring if he misses most of them.

Natasha shoots a few more shots at him before running off.

The Winter Soldier watches as she runs then says to the other four with him, "Ona moya. Nayti yevo."

He then jumps over the overpass and onto a car creating a dent. And then slowing makes his way after Natasha.

Three of the four goons repel down with rope. They both start blasting at the bus, one now with a minigun. From within the bus, Y/N and Steve awaken from their little nap and charge out the bus. Steve grabs his shield as Y/N bashes into one of the guys at a speed that made it seem like a horror movie.

Up with the other goon on the overpass, Sam appears behind him and with a knife. He kicks the back of his knee, clocks him as he turns, slices up his face while grabbing his gun, then kicks him over the edge.

Y/N was absolutely stomping on the guys legs. Steve was using his shield to get closer to the guy with the minigun. Sam aims over the edge and shoots the other guy down below.

Steve starts running and flips over the minigunner, but pulls the guys head down and against the top of the car he was standing on. He looks up to Sam as he shot at the last guy.

"Go! I got this!," Sam tells him.

He looks over to see Y/N barreling into the guy Sam was shooting at.

Steve runs of after The Winter Soldier. 

Meanwhile, The Winter Soldier was walking down a road between cars. He was holding his gun against his shoulder.

He stops when he hears Natasha talking quietly behind a car a few feet away.

He kneels down and pulls out a grenade. He rolls it under a few cars toward the voice.

"Taking fire above and below expressway. Civilians threatened. Repeat, civilians threatened. I make an LZ, 2300 block of Virginia Avenue. Rendezvous, two minutes."

But when the grenade reached the source, It wasn't Natasha. 

It was a recording.

The grenade explodes just as Natasha jumps off a car behind him. As he turns, she kicks the gun out of his hands and wraps herself atop his shoulders. She pulls out a garrote and attempts to choke him.

He blocks it with his hand just in time.

They back up into a car and he uses his other hand to pull her off. She hits into another car in front of him and falls to the ground. He picks up his gun and aims.

But Natasha tosses a shock device that looked a bit like an arc reactor onto his metal arm. 

This causes his arm to go limp. 

Natasha runs off.

The Winter Soldier rips the device off with his other hand. After a second his arm jolts back to life. He then quickly makes his way after her.

Natasha limps down the run yelling to people as they run frantically, "Get out of the way! Stay out of the way!" 

After a few feet, the Winter Soldier send a shot directly into her shoulder. She falls to the ground and leans up against a car. She looks toward the origin of the shot only to not see him. She turns her head to see him hop on a car and aim at her.

Luckily, Steve charges at him.

But unluckily, The Winter Soldier sees him and throws a punch to which Steve blocks with his shield. 

The Winter Soldier knocks the shield from in between them and dropkicks Steve back. He quickly sits up and fires just as Steve manages to hold his shield up to deflect. 

They both roll to the side.

The Winter Soldier pulls out a submachine gun as Steve runs past the car with his shield up. Steve hops over the car and kicks the gun away as he reloads. But The Winter Soldier whips out a pistol and fires, to which Steve easily deflects.

When the clip is empty Steve punches him. He attempts to hit him with the edge of his shield but The Winter Soldier catches it then hits him with a right hook. The Winter Soldier grabs the shield with both hands then flips him.

Steve flips completely landing on his feet but his shield was in the Winter Soldiers hands now.

Over with Natasha, Y/N appears crouched in front of her. He quickly takes a look at her wound before peaking over the car at the two fighting.

Steve and The Winter Soldier trade a few blows and blocks. But then Steve gets knocked back by his own shield.

In a crouched position, He looks up at the other man holding his shield.

Steve makes a dash at him as The Winter Soldier hurls his shield at him with his metal arm. Steve narrowly dodges and the shield pierces through the van deeply behind him. As Steve reaches him, The Winter Soldier reaches down to his thigh and pulls out a knife.

Y/N from behind the car stare at them and mumbles, "..Is that a fucking pocket knife?"

Steve continuously narrowly dodges and deflects the knife with his hands. He eventually lands a punch to the jaw then follow up with a spinning back kick. The Winter Soldier is sent flying into a car.

Steve runs and knees him into the door. The Winter Soldier blocks a punch and retaliates. Steve grabs it and uses his momentum against him, flipping him to the floor.

The Winter Soldier rolls up onto his feet and grabs Steve by the throat. He throws Steve into the side of a van. When he tries to stab Steve, Steve holds the knife just above his head and in the van. The Winter Soldier tries to slash causing him to form a long cut in the van.

Steve ducks under then does a belly to back suplex. He kick ups then pulls his shield out from the back of the van. He blocks a downward stab, and the Winter Soldier drops his knife into the other hand. 

The Winter Soldier tries to spin slash but Steve blocks it by hitting the edge of his shield against his metal arm. Steve grabs his arm then bashes his shield against the mans face causing him to turn. Steve the holds on to The Winter Soldiers face from behind and flips him into the air over his shoulder.

The Winter Soldier rolls facing the other way when landing a few feet away.

His mask had fallen off.

He turns with an empty look on his face..

The face of one Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes...

Steve stands there breathing heavy in shock while over near the cars, Y/N steps out from behind a car and stands straight up. Y/N quickly makes his way next to Steve.

They both mutter, "...Bucky?"

A sense of what looks like confusion appears on Bucky's face as he asks, "Who the hell's Bucky?"

Less than a moment later, Bucky pulls out a pistol and aims it at them.

A scream akin to a war cry is heard, as Sam comes charging in from the skies into Bucky. Bucky rolls into a car and stand to aim at the two again. 

But from behind them, Natasha fires his grenade launcher into the car next to him. She limps over to Y/N, Steve and Sam as the flames die down to reveal Bucky had vanished.

SHIELD SUV's quickly swarmed the area and circled them. Dozens of agents flood toward the four.

Rumlow appears front and center, "Drop the shield, Cap! Get on your knees, All of you!" 

The four are huddled together with their hands up.

Y/N closes his eyes and mumbles, "Oh, I'm gonna feel this in the morning."

Suddenly a dark green light flashes from Y/N's hands and envelops the four of them. The SHIELD agents cover their eyes from the flash. But when they look back, they were all missing.

They had vanished.

The group was walking through the woods a few miles away. Steve, Sam, and Natasha were following Y/N, who hasn't said a word yet.

"..It was him," Steve says, "He looked right at us like he didn't even know us..."

"How is that even possible? It was, like, 70 years ago," Sam says.

"Zola.. Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43. Zola experimented on him... Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall.. They must have found him and...," Steve trails off.

Natasha tells him, "None of that's your fault, Steve." 

"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky and Y/N," Steve mumbles. 

Y/N silently comes to a stop when he heard that. He looks back for a moment before looking around ahead of him. Eventually he takes a breath and walks in a new direction without saying a word.

The others follow him.

"You gonna tell us where we're going?," Sam asks him.

"..You'll see when we get there..."

A few minutes later, they eventually reach a dam.

Y/N leads them to a gated door on the side. He then brings them down a hall, where a man is jogging down towards them.

"GSW. She's lost at least a pint. Maybe two," Y/N says as the man reaches them.

"Let me take her," he says.

"She'll want to see him first," Y/N replies.

They make their way into a room with a plastic curtain draped from the ceiling. Y/N moves it as they walk in, A man was lying in a bed behind it.

It was Nick Fury.

Fury looks up at them, "About damn time."

A few minutes had gone by and the doctor was patching up Natasha. The others were surrounded around Fury on his hospital bed.

"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache," Fury lists off.

"Don't forget your collapsed lung," Y/N says with a somewhat weak smirk.

"Let's not forget that. Otherwise, I'm good." 

"They cut you open.. Your heart stopped," Natasha says. 

"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it," Fury tells them.

Steve asks, "Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?"

"Any attempt on the 'Director''s life had to look successful. Can't kill you if you're already dead.. Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust..."

"But you trusted Y/N but not Steve?," Sam asks.

Fury looks over at Y/N before what looks like rolling his eyes. Y/N lets out a small laugh.

Y/N explains, "I have super hearing. Tetrodotoxin B slows the pulse. It didn't stop it completely. He couldn't hide it from me no matter how hard he tries."

Bucky was sitting underground as a man worked on his damaged arm. 

He was staring off into the distance. Hearing things.. Seeing things...Remembering things..

He sees Zola standing over him, 'Sergeant Barnes...'

Him falling off the train as Y/N and Steve yell, 'Bucky, no!' 

Him lying on a table as a man drills into his arm and Zola saying, 'The procedure has already started. You are to be the new fist of HYDRA. Put him on ice.' 

Though in reality, he backhands the man working on his arm and sends him skidding across the floor. A guard just across from him quickly takes aim. Bucky just sits there, breathing heavy.

Just outside the room, Alexander Pierce walks past two agents with Rumlow just behind him. One of the agents notices him.

"Sir. He's unstable. Erratic," the agent tells him.

Pierce walks directly into the room. He takes his glasses off and motions for the men aiming to lower their guns. He makes his way in front of Bucky.

"Mission report," and when Bucky continues staring into the distance, he repeats, "Mission report now." 

Bucky once again ignores him. 

Pierce then leans in front of him for a moment, before smacking him hard across the face.

Bucky slowly turns back to him, "..The men on the bridge... Who were they?" 

"You met them earlier this week on another assignment," Pierce tries to tell him.

"I knew them," he mumbles as he looks away.

Pierce grabs a stool and sits in front of him, "...Your work has been a gift to mankind. You shaped the century. And I need you to do it one more time. Society's at a tipping point between order and chaos. And tomorrow morning, we're gonna give it a push. But, if you don't do your part, I can't do mine. And HYDRA can't give the world the freedom it deserves." 

"...But I knew them.."

Pierce sighs then stands and says to one of the others, "Prep him." 

"He's been out of cryo-freeze too long..," the other man tells him.

"Then wipe him and start over."

The men make their way over to Bucky and force him to recline back. Bucky unenthusiastically opens his mouth, then one of the guys puts a mouth guard in. The other man hits a button on a monitor to the left.

It locks his right arm down as a machine whirs and spins in line to his head. Electricity crackles at the edge of it before it clamps down on his head.

Bucky starts screaming...

The Winter Soldier starts screaming..
