CHAPTER TWO.
her warm embrace

Lola Hernandez has never been so unsure of something before in her entire life. Having to voice your thoughts out loud to a camera seemed stupid, but maybe it could be therapeutic. Everyone else at this school probably opened up about their current boyfriends and where they see themselves in fifty years, but she didn't know what to say. If you had a chance to say something to your sixty year old self, what would you say?

Pressing the play button on the camera that sat perched on a box, she backs up and takes a seat on the cold, metal chair. Her long eyelashes beat against her skin as she tries to think of what to talk about. Racking her brain of an important topic, she sighs, looking straight into the big lense.

"Uh, hi, older Lola. I'm not too sure what to say on here, so I guess I'll just voice some of the things that have been running through my head daily since arriving in Tree Hill." Lola took a gulp, pursing her lips. "Since meeting Lucas, I've been doing so much better than what I was before. He brings out the best side of me and it's great to have someone like him there. What I'm trying to get at, is that I'm scared."

Finally admitting this out loud felt refreshing. Like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

"I'm scared that he's just going to end up leaving like everyone else in my life has done." She clears her throat, chocking down the tears that threatened to spill out. "Letting him become my friend has been easy, sure, but I haven't fully let him in yet. He doesn't know everything that I've been through. I just hope that you finally had the guts to tell him, because he deserves it. And I really hope you finally found someone to settle down with, someone who never plans on leaving, because being alone fucking sucks and you deserve to feel loved."

THE WIND BLEW LOLA'S BLACK HAIR IN MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, COOL AIR FOLLOWING BEHIND IT, HITTING THE EXPOSED SHOULDERS THAT WASN'T CURRENTLY COVERED UP BY HER LONG SLEEVED SHIRT. Glancing to her right, she laughed at what Brooke had just said, the two of them walking to their shared class together. They had stayed up all night last night, texting back and forth as they got to know each other better. Turns out, they had a lot more in common than what was original thought.

Brooke enjoyed her company, loving that she now had a friend to talk about fashion with. Peyton liked all of the black clothes, anything dark, which was the opposite of what the brunette liked. Haley always stayed caught up in her husband and if she wasn't doing that, she had been pouring her heart out in songs, not having time for Brooke and her teenage things.

As they walk past a lunch table, Lucas runs towards them, trying to line up with their fast walking. "What's up, Miss President and her new bestie?"

Brooke hummed, "Oh, please. Don't remind me. It was really fun to win and all, but now I actually have to do something. What was I thinking?"

"Oh, you were thinking you'd be great at this and, everyone who voted for you, including me and Lola, was thinking the same thing." The three of them laughed, almost to the other side of the school.

Lola nodded, "He's not wrong."

"I'm never wrong, but I got something for you." He opens a silver bag, moving it in her direction to see inside. "A present for the president."

Brooke's mouth fell open as she stopped walking, the others doing it too. "A present? Maybe this was a good idea."

Lola watches as he grabs a big book out of the bag and she takes this as her cue to leave, not wanting to intrude on what seemed like an important moment. She slowly backs away, going unnoticed as the two of them stare into each other's eyes. Definitely a moment. But, before she could get too far, someone interrupts their conversation.

The random boy with spiked hair embraces Brooke, the two sharing bright smiles. It dawns on Lola that this must be Brooke's boyfriend that she's heard so much about from Lucas. She glanced over at Lucas to see the fallen look that is stewed on his adorable face. Lola quickly walks over towards the blonde and grabs ahold of his arm, "I'm gonna steal Lucas here, so he can help me with a back problem I've been having. I heard he's really good with his hands."

Lucas glanced down at the girl with confusion. She gives him a look and his blonde brain finally catches on. "Right, I'll see you guys later." Once she pulls him away from the group he drops her arm and meets her gaze, his body towering over her's. "Why'd you do that?"

"Because, it's obvious you still love Brooke, so what's the harm in trying to make her just a little bit jealous? And you can't deny it, literally anyone can see it on your face, Luke." Lola felt like a bitch for the words she said earlier, she'll have to apologize to Brooke at the party later.

Lucas sighed, leaning against the large white boulder that held the building together. "You're right. It's really hard seeing her with another person, especially someone like Felix."

"I know. Just keep doing what you're doing and she'll realize just how special you really are." Lola grabbed his hand, squeezing it as she looked into his beautiful hazel eyes.

Lucas suddenly grabs her off the ground and wraps his arms around her tiny waist, taking the girl by surprise. However; she recovers from the shock and hugs him back, the two enjoying one another's company.

The time for the party came pretty fast and once Lola had shown up, she was completely taken back. Because although she had only been to school for two days, she didn't recognize a single person in the house that belonged to Felix. It must've just been older people he knew. Hopefully that's the case and they're not just some randos off the street.

A bunch of people shouted things, obviously cheering someone on as they consumed lots of alcohol. The one person she did recognize so far was Nathan Scott, the boy filling up his red solo cup. Taking a chance, she walks beside him and starts to fill up her own cup, knowing the boy beside her had his eyes on her form.

"I'm Lola, the new girl. You're like the only person I know here, so I hope you don't mind me staying with you until someone from school shows." She glanced up at him, her brown eyes meeting his bright blue ones. "We don't gotta talk or nothing, I know you're having trouble with that."

"You don't know anything." He shook his head, chugging his beer down. "I saw you hugging on Lucas earlier, did you befriend him to get in his pants? I hate to break it to you, but he doesn't sleep with the first girl who throws their self at him."

Lola threw her drink on him, everyone around them getting quiet as they watched the exchange. "Screw you, dickhead." She mumbled, walking away to find somewhere to sit in the living room.

What an asshole. She was just trying to make conversation. Taking a seat on the couch, she grabs her flip phone and starts texting Lucas, asking where he was. The blonde responds after about two minutes, claiming he had just walked in the house.

Quickly getting off the love seat, she makes her way to the front door. "Thank god you're here. I had a run in with your brother and he's a grade A douche bag."

He chuckled, "Yeah, sorry about that. After Haley left, he's been going back to his old ways. Which included him being a jackass."

"Well, it's safe to say I'll never spark up a conversation with him again. Ever in my life." She rolled her eyes, before looking around the place. "Do you know anyone at this party besides Felix and Nathan?"

"Now that you mention it, no, I don't. I know Mouth is coming, maybe he's already here? Why don't we go check the basement."

Her eyebrows shoot up, "There's a basement?"

"Yeah." He grabs her hand and leads her down the path to Felix's downstairs room. On her way down there she noticed Nathan's eyes on her so she flips him off before she had disappeared down the steps.

And sure enough, right in the middle of a bunch of people, sat Mouth with Anna and some other boy. Lucas brought her towards the group and they sat down on the smaller chair, her in the middle and him hanging off the edge, almost all the way on top of the arm of it.

"Hey, Luke, what'd you say on the time capsule?" Mouth asked him.

The blonde shrugged, "Nothing, really. I didn't have much to say.

"I did." The boy spoke up, noticing the looks everyone gave him. "What? It's important. Someday the kids are gonna need to know the truths about how it really was."

And just by those words, Lola realized that the boy was Tim. A boy Lucas had warned her about. Brooke takes that as her cue to walk in, stealing the empty seat on the other side of Mouth, who informs her what their topic of conversation is.

"Does it really matter? By the time they open that thing, we're gonna be old." Brooke grumbled, sipping from her blue cup.

He shrugged, "You never know. Sometimes they can be opened up early, if there's a fire or a building moves. You never know."

Nathan suddenly walks past them, interrupting their conversation as Lucas stops him and pulls him into a talk.

Lola takes this as her chance to speak with Brooke, "Hey, Brooke, can we talk somewhere private?"

"Sure." Brooke took off, Lola following as they walked back up the steps and into a random room that surprisingly had no one in it. "What'd you want to talk about?"

Lola took a seat on the bed, but the other girl stayed standing. "I wanted to apologize for earlier. It was totally insensitive of me to say something like that."

"I get it, Lola. You were obviously just trying to help Lucas and make me jealous." Brooke sat beside her. "But, I really like Felix. I don't think me and Lucas will be getting back together any time soon."

"Okay. And I'll respect your relationship with him. If he makes you happy, that's all that really matters. Listen, I know we just met, but don't think I won't hesitate to kick his ass if he does something to hurt you."

Brooke laughed, her dimples on display. "And I wouldn't stop you. New best buds for life?" She held up her pinky, waiting for the other girl to lock them together.

She interlocked them, "New best buds for life."

A phone buzzing broke them out of their moment and Lola pulls her's out, seeing an unknown number. Clicking the green button, she puts it to her ear, "Hello?"

"Lola, I know this a lot to ask of you, and considering you probably hate Nathan at the moment, could you please come bail us out of jail?" The voice of Lucas Scott came through the phone, desperate in his tone. "I'll definitely pay you back."

Lucas normally wouldn't ask such a big thing from a new friend, but his mother said no, and Lola's number was still fresh on his mind from whenever she first gave it to him a few days ago.

"Uh, sure. Yeah. I'll come get you guys out. But, you owe me big time." She mumbled into the phone before hanging up, not caring to say anything else. "Could I borrow your car?"

Brooke furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, "What for?"

"Nathan and Lucas are in jail and need someone to bail them out. My brother has our car, so I'd really appreciate it if I could borrow yours....?"

"Of course," Brooke nodded, handing her the keys. "Just make sure you tell those boys off for being irresponsible."

Lola laughed, "I definitely plan on it. I'll see you later."

"Yep. Hey," Brooke stopped her in place. "You don't have to bring it back to me tonight, just pick me up for school in the morning."

"Alright, thank you."

Brooke's blue Volkswagen made Lola feel a little bit claustrophobic as she pulled off the main road and into the Police Station. It wasn't very spacious, but manageable. She's definitely gonna have to let Lucas drive and she'd get in the back due to how small the backseat was. The two boys are too large to fit there.

As she opened the door to get out, both Scott brothers walk out the main doors, someone obviously bailing them out. Furrowing her eyebrows in complete and utter confusion, she turns her head to the left and sees a man perched up on his car, most likely their father.

Nathan and Lucas stop in front of him and start talking, Lola just standing by Brooke's car watching them as they did. Whatever the man said, made something click wrong in Nathan's head because he just stomps off, hands shoved in his black hoodie pockets. She meets Lucas' eyes and he nods, telling her he'd be fine with the man if she wants to follow him.

She quickly got back in the car and drove over towards Nathan, keeping the vehicle at his pace. "Get in the car!" She shouts, eyes switching between him and the road.

"No, I can walk just fine!" He shouted, not stopping his trek amongst the road. He's so stubborn that Lola contemplates just running him over and getting his death over with.

"It's freezing out there, just get in the car, Nathan!" She watched him contemplate his next moves as he stops, so she does too, waiting for him to make a move.

He sighed, gripping the handle and throwing it open, actually getting inside. He didn't say anything to her as she pressed on the gas peddle and took off down the road. His ears perk up at the song on the radio and decides to turn the volume louder, the car being filled with Eminem.

Normally, Lola would've enjoyed not talking to the brunette boy, but she could've at least gotten a thank you or something for trying to bail him out when she didn't have to. She turns the dial and glances at him, "So, I don't get a thank you?"

"No, it's pretty obvious my father was the one to actually do it. And even if he didn't, you could've just left me in there to rot."

"Just because your wife left you, doesn't mean you can be a dick to anyone who's even remotely nice towards you. You're acting like a fucking child who didn't get their way." She gripped the steering wheel a little too hard, her knuckles turning white. "I know you don't give a shit about my opinion, but this behavior isn't cutting it. It feels like I'm the only damn one in this town brave enough to tell you."

Nathan turns towards her, actually taking the time to get a full look at her. She's definitely a lot more beautiful than he originally thought. "You're right. It just hurts so damn much. She left me to be with Chris Keller and I couldn't stop her. I wasn't good enough to keep her here, to make her want to stay."

He didn't know why he was opening up to this random stranger, maybe it was the fact that he was sort of drunk, but it felt good to talk about it with someone.

Lola's heart broke at the crack in his voice, looking over at him to see tears lightly prick out of his eyes.

"I'm so fucking sick of everyone in my life leaving me or just not being there in general when I need them the most." He bit his lip, trying not to let the tears roll down. "When is it ever going to end?"

Lola pulled over on the side of the road before turning to face him and grabbing ahold of his hand, making him look at her after battling himself not to let anyone see him in such a state. "I know how it feels, Nathan. Everyone in my life has left me too, besides my brother. It sucks, makes you feel like you're not enough, but you are, Nathan. You're enough for your brother Lucas, you're enough to your other friends and even though I sort of hate you, you're enough for me. Don't ever think you aren't, okay?"

Nathan nodded, not saying anything else as she pulled him into her warm embrace, rubbing circles though his hair as he finally let everything out, the tears rolling down his face to get to the bottom of the river. He clutched the side of her stomach, happy that an actual human being was giving him the loving affection he deserved, something his own mother didn't even do.

Never in a million years did Lola think she'd end the night sneaking Nathan Scott into her room in the middle of the night, but hey, crazy things happen all the time, right?
