Field Trip (Chapter 35)

You leaned against the wall in silence as Ironwood, who had arrived shortly after you, was shouting at Ozpin.

Ironwood: "They were here... Ozpin, they were here!" He slammed his fist down onto the desk in anger.

Glynda: "We're very much aware of that! Thank you, James." Glynda interrupted, much to your pleasure.

Ironwood: "Fantastic! You're aware! Now are we going to do something about it or should we just stay the course and continue to ignore what's right in front of us?!"

A ping from the elevator signalled that someone was approaching, this gave just enough time for Ironwood to step away and calm his features.

Ozpin: "Come in."

Ruby stepped into the room, passing you without notice.

Ruby: "Sorry it took so long. Someone accidentally hit all the buttons on the elevator on the way up here... It wasn't me." This made you laugh and she turned around surprised and confused. "Wait why are-"

Ozpin: "Thank you for coming Ruby. How are you feeling?" He asked quickly avoiding the inevitable question as Ruby turned back to look at him.

Ruby: "Okay, I guess. I'd feel better if my bad guy catching record wasn't zero for three." She joked and when even you didn't laugh she corrected herself. "Okay, so that's the tone we're going for, got it."

Ironwood: "Ruby, I feel it's appropriate to let you know that I think what you did last night is exactly what being a Huntress is all about. You recognized a threat. You took action. And you did the very best you could."

Ruby: "I uh- thank you, sir." She never had taken praise well.

Ozpin: "Now, the general here has already informed us of the events that... transpired last night, but now that you've rested, we were wondering if you had anything to add." Glynda jumped on the chance.

Glynda: "Was anyone else with her? Did she look familiar to you at all?" Ruby turned to you with a help me look and you shrugged leaving her to her own devices.

Ruby: "I... I don't know. She was wearing a mask, and she never said anything to me. But I know she fought with glass. I don't think that was her Semblance though. Her clothing lit up whenever she attacked."

Glynda: "Save for the glass, that sounds like the woman I fought the night we met Ruby." Ironwood was quick to put down this theory.

Ironwood: "Embedding Dust into clothing is an age-old technique. It could have been anyone."

Ruby: "Wait... you think this girl is connected to Torchwick and the White Fang?" She asked inquisitively and you could hear the hesitation in her voice.

Ozpin: "It's possible. But we still lack the required evidence to link the two together." Ruby turned to you and this time you nodded having already guessed at what she would say.

Ruby: "Actually, I... I think I remember her saying something about a hideout, or something, in the southeast. Just outside the Kingdom."

Ozpin: "Interesting. Thank you for your cooperation Ruby. Why don't you go and spend some time with your team? You have a big day ahead of you."

Ruby: "Any time." She smiled and turned to leave.

Ozpin: "And Miss Rose, please try and be ... discreet about this matter."

Ruby: "Yes sir." She said looking over her shoulder, she looked to you and smiled, then left.

Ozpin: "Well then, what do you have to say?" He asked looking towards you.

You kicked off from the wall and walked to the desk, your footsteps in time with the tick of the clock.

(Y/N): "Well, from what she told me and her team yesterday, after the dance and this morning, what she said just now was the truth. Although, the intruder never said anything, she was just thinking on her feet. As I've told you before we learnt about the location before when we chased Roman ourselves."

Ironwood: "Well there we have it. We send as many troops as we can to the southeast, find out exactly what's going on, and eradicate any forces that stand in our way."

Glynda: "Why must your answer to everything involve a triumphant display of military bravado!? You treat every situation like it's a contest of measuring di-!"

Ozpin: "Glynda!"

Glynda: "Well, he does." She spotted you smirking and glared, readjusting her stance to recover her dignity.

Ozpin: "She's right. As much as I too would love to end this situation once and for all, we must remember that while we may know their general location we don't have a accurate location. If we send in your men and miss their location they will surely move and go underground."

Ironwood: "I have served you faithfully for years... but if you mean to tell me that your plan is to really hold the defenses, and wait-!"

Ozpin: He stops from his seat and rested his hands on his desk. "It is not! You're a general, James. So tell me, when you prepare to go to war, which do you send in first? The flag bearers, or the scouts?"

Eyes turned back to you at the last comment so you mocked a salute.

[Le Timeskip brought to you by Chibi (Y/N) polishing his spork.]

Ruby ran into the auditorium with a large backpack, she quickly ran to her team who were stood in front of JNPR. The two teams talked for a few moments until Glynda stepped up to the microphone.

Glynda: "Quiet! Quiet please. Professor Ozpin would like to share a few words before we begin."

Ozpin: "Today we stand together, united. Mistral. Atlas. Vacuo. Vale. The four Kingdoms of Remnant. On this day, nearly eighty years ago, the largest war in recorded history came to an end. It was a war of ignorance, of greed, and of oppression. A war that was about much more than where borders fell or who traded with whom, but about the very idea of individualism itself. We fought for countless reasons, one of which being the destruction of all forms of art and self-expression. And as you are well aware, that was something many could not stand for. As a result, those who opposed this tyranny began naming their children after one of the core aspects of art itself: color. It was their way to demonstrate that not only would they refuse to tolerate this oppression, but neither were the generations to come. And it was a trend that is held to this very day. We encourage individuality, expressionism, and unity through diversity. As I have said, today we stand together, united. But this bond cannot exist without effort. Which is why today, while the rest of the world celebrates peace, Huntsmen and Huntresses will work to uphold it. As first year students, you will be tasked with shadowing a professional Huntsman or Huntress on a mission. Some of you may be taken out of the Kingdom for several days. Others may work within the walls for the rest of the week. But no matter which path you choose, remember to be safe, remember your training, and remember to do your very best."

Ozpin stepped away as the students begin to file out of the amphitheater after picking their missions. Team JNPR left RWBY to go pick their own.

Ruby: "This is perfect! Now all we have to do is shadow a Huntsman working in the southeast!"

Yang: "Yeah! We'll follow them around by day and give them the slip by night!"

Weiss: "The only problem is we'll have to find one."

Blake: "We could try search and destroy?"

Team RWBY approached a holographic screen. And Ruby began looking over it.

Ruby: "Here we go! Quadrant 5 needs Grimm cleared out!"

Blake: "Well, it's in the southeast."

Yang: "Sounds perfect!"

Ruby selects it and typed in her team name, however, the screen says that first years are not allowed to take this mission.

Weiss: "Wonderful!" She said rolling her eyes.

Blake: "Any other ideas?"

Ruby: "We mail ourselves there!" She said, hand gesturing a few different sized boxes.

(Y/N): "Oh, I would love to see that." The girls turned to see you walking towards them alongside Ozpin.

Ozpin: "Unfortunately, we determined that the concentration of Grimm was too extreme for first-year students. It seems that particular region is rather popular. In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that you five will make your way there no matter which job you choose." The three girls glared at their leader, who nervously rubbed her head.

Ruby: "Whatever makes you say that?"

Ozpin: "I'm still curious how you all found yourself at the docks last semester. I'm interested to know how you really learned about a hideout in the southeast. And I certainly wonder why witnesses reported seeing robots and rose petals in a dance club some time ago." They all looked sheepish for a moment.

Ozpin: "I doubt I'll ever find the exact answers I'm looking for. So how about this: instead of waiting for you all to break the rules, why don't we just bend them?"

Ozpin selected something on his scroll, and the hologram screen made a noise. The job read 'Taken Team RWBY and Team (Y/N)'.

Ruby: "We won't let you down. Thank you, professor."

Ozpin: "Do not thank me for this. Teamwork and persistence have carried you far. But you must understand, the things that await you beyond the protection of the Kingdom will not care. Stay close to your Huntsman at all times, and do exactly as he says. He will be leading you on this mission, and he can have you sent back to Beacon, if he finds your skills to be unsatisfactory. Good luck." He nodded at the five of you and walked off.

All five of you left the auditorium and made your way towards the bullheads that were already taking off.

Yang: "That wasn't exactly uplifting."

Blake: "But it's the truth."

Ruby:It's gonna to be tough, but I know we can do it! And we got an extra teammate nothing can stop us!"

A student ran past you all.

Run Forest Run: "Hey! Team CFVY is back!"

The other students swarmed towards the second year team, you watched as Blake made her way to Velvet.

Blake: "Velvet? Are you okay?"

Velvet: "I'm fine. I had Yatsuhashi to look out for me."

Weiss: "Your mission was supposed to end a week ago! What happened?"

Velvet: "Nothing happened. It was just ... there were just so many..." She looked up and noticed the growing concern of team RWBY. "Oh, but don't worry. You first years are just shadowing Huntsmen, so you should be fine."

Yang: "Right."

Velvet: "I should go. Be safe, okay?" She walked off with the rest of her team and the crowd dispersed.

Ruby: "We can do this. We've never backed down before, and we're not going to start now."

Blake: "Of course not."

Ruby: "Besides, it won't only be us out there! We'll be fighting alongside a genuine Huntsman!"

Yang: "Yeah!"

A feeling of dread suddenly swept over you as you approached the bullhead and heard air getting cut in half. Stopping outside a green haired blur appeared in front of you all.

Oobleck: "Why, hello there! Who's ready to fight for their lives?"

(Y/N): "We're doomed."
