Chapter Eight

Hawks figured he'd be annoyed at the dark-haired villain, Dabi, for occupying his thoughts however, he couldn't help himself from thinking about him.

The hero knew that by drinking alcohol his thoughts would wander a bit more than usual. Perhaps thinking about it would ease his growing urge to see the villain again.

It wasn't like their... relationship—whatever it was—was normal. Dabi was a villain while Hawks was a hero. Then again, he was only in this... relationship... because of his mission: infiltrate the League of Villains.

So far, he thought he had been making steady progress. His relationship with Dabi seemed to develop positively however, Hawks was yet to be introduced to the other members. So, was he really making steady progress? The lady, who Hawks made no effort to remember the name of, at the Hero Public Safety Commissions would probably disagree.

Taking another sip from his glass, Hawks contemplated on the subject. Finally, a not-so-heroic idea crossed the blond's mind; he'd sugarcoat his reports.

Hawks wasn't one to lie however, he could be discharged from this mission if he didn't present viable enough information to the Hero Public Safety Commission.

The hero let out a low sound while returning his index finger to the rim of the glass. His thoughts quickly ran dry, his entire focus dedicated to running his finger along its rim.

A long empty moment passed before the blond entertained a reoccurring thought: Dabi.

Unlike before, Hawks paid his mission no attention and instead focused on the villain himself.

His deep purple scars that lined the bottom half of his face and wrapped around his arms came to mind first. Those scars weren't something that appeared on everybody so, it caused the hero to wonder how he had gotten them in the first place. The obvious answer would be that he got hurt during an attack however, Hawks knew those scars could only be born from flames. Perhaps it was in response to his blue flames? The chance of that happening would be genetically impossible though, right?

A switch flipped and the blond's mind began to spur with possibilities.

With what the blond had learned during his time with the Hero Public Safety Commission, he started to question the actuality of an individual not inheriting the resistance part of a quirk. Although it wasn't impossible, it was extremely rare; two parents that possess completely opposite quirks from each other could end up with a child who, unfortunately, develops one of their quirks but not the resistance to it.

Hawks knew he was going out on a limb but his mind couldn't stop. Something inside him now urged to get an answer about those... horrible scars that covered the dark-haired villain's body.

Oh, how horrible those scars seemed. The closer you looked, the more cracks and cuts you'd find. Yes, it was a scar but it seemed far from healed. Small movements would cause the skin to tear and bleed. Even thinking about it made Hawks shiver. How could somebody endure that type of continuous pain?

A small amount of deepening discomfort came over the blond. It didn't matter that Dabi was a villain; Hawks felt that nobody deserved to go through that.

The hero attempted to quickly dismiss the thought, knowing the more he thought about it, the more his deepening feeling would consume him.

Switching subjects, the blond soon found something else about the villain that consumed his mind.

Despite being a villain, Dabi was very good-looking; Hawks knew that from the moment he saw his photo in the mission file he received from the Hero Public Safety Commission. Seeing him in person though... Hawks could only curse the camera for not truly capturing his features.

His dark hair, aquamarine eyes, and slim yet somewhat masculine frame all perfectly fitted the villain. His choice of clothing greatly emphasized his villainous look while also separating him from the others. Of course, his more-than-subtle scars contributed too.

His entire appearance was memorable—at least to Hawks—unlike other villains he had encountered during his time as a hero. That's probably what kept Dabi stuck in the blond's mind all of the time. Had he had that effect on everyone he'd met?

Hawks figured his opinions of the dark-haired villain were probably abnormal, particularly for a hero-to-villain dynamic. This, however, did not stop him from thinking about Dabi.

With a soft voice, Hawks spoke, "If only he weren't a villain."
