Epilogue

5 Months Later...

Bruce woke up with a gasp, still shaking from the nightmare he had. His hand immediately went to where Isla was and expected to find nobody there.  Instead, he felt warm arms wrap around him, gently rocking him.

"I'm here. Go to sleep." she murmured, pressing herself against his broad chest.

"You're here." Bruce remembered. She was back. She was back by his side.  He felt his arms hold her closer to him, circling around her waist.

She pecked him, her hazel eyes droopy with sleep, but she forced herself to stay awake for his sake.

"You're here." Bruce said sleepily. His arms went slack around her waist and she went back to her spot beside him, still holding his hand.

"- You're here" Bruce yawned, cuddling into Isla's stomach as he dozed off again.

Isla, though, lost her sleepiness. She ran her fingers through Bruce's hair, before turning around, eyebrows furrowed.

She sensed something was wrong.

So she slunk out of Bruce's grip and replaced her stomach with a pillow, before quietly making her way out of the master bedroom and down the hall towards the kids' rooms.

She stopped and stretched, before gently opening Damian's door and slipping inside. She saw his form in the dark, slightly shaking, his back facing her. Isla made her way over to him, before slowly wrapping her arms around him and gently running her fingers through his hair.

He jumped in surprise, quickly wiping at his face. " 'Ummi? What are you- you should be asleep."

"So should you, sugar plum." She murmured, grabbing her stool.

He turned to face her, his green eyes catching the stray moonlight and seemingly glowing. He looked like a carbon copy of his father. He looked at her, before looking away, before he spoke.

" 'Ummi, do you still love me?" he looked down at his hands.

"I always did and always will, chico." She kissed his forehead. "What makes you think any different?"

Damian looked away, sighing. "I died, 'Ummi. All of us did."

"Wha-" Isla was taken aback, but he continued.

"-All of us died in the time that you were gone. Grayson, by some electric machine, Todd, by being beaten with a crowbar and then blown up, Drake,by laser bullets, and me, by an evil clone. But we all were brought back."

"At least all of you are back..."

"And I remember the last thing I was thinking before I passed out- was that I could meet you on the other side."

Isla stared at her son, before giving him a watery smile. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you. It was my fault."

Damian looked at his mother, one he loved so dearly. "No. It wasn't your fault. Someone took you-"

"I missed every moment that mattered. I missed your birthdays, your middle school graduation, your parties, your galas, your training sessions. I missed watching you grow up. I wasn't there for all your high and lows. I have failed as a mother, Damian. I have failed. And for that, I'm truly sorry. You deserved so, so much better." She sniffled before hugging him.

Damian was silent, before he pulled away from her. " 'Ummi. You did not fail. You were the best mother anyone could've asked for."

"When you died, a part of me died too. Father wouldn't speak. Grayson never left his room. Todd was angry and never came home. Tim didn't go to school. We were a mess without you, 'Ummi. And we should've started looking for you earlier. We couldn't find you in time. We failed. And you have every right to hate us for it."

Isla just held him tighter. "Hate you? Have you gone insane?" She chuckled.

"Perhaps."

"I can't hate any of you. It's impossible. I love all of you. Dick, Jaybird, Timmy, Damian, Bruce, the girls- I love all of them. You were the reason I kept fighting in there. You were the reason I didn't give up. And just as a side note-you will always be my Baby bat. I know you might resent the twins for getting to stay with me for four years, and I would too if I were you, but I just want you to know I will never stop loving you. No matter how big the family becomes."

Damian nodded, before wiping at his face. "You're planning for more kids?" he finally spoke.

Isla laughed. "No way. Six is more than enough. And I can't anymore."

"Why not?"

"Dami, sweetheart, I'm sterile now."

"Oh. That's a relief."

Isla chuckled. "Indeed. Giving birth is a pain in the ass."

Damian yawned, before he hugged Isla. "I'm so happy you're back."

"Me too darling." Isla sat on the stool, watching her son settle into bed.

Damian waited for a moment to see if she'd leave, but she didn't. He was wondering if she remembered the song she sang for him- it was four traumatic years ago, so maybe not. If so he was dying to hear it right now.

Get your priorities straight. Damian reprimanded himself, trying to lull himself into sleep.

Just as he shut his eyes and finally felt sleep tug at him, he heard a soft voice sing.

"Dearest one, when the sun shall rise,

I'll gather hope and let it fly

Dearest child, now fall asleep,

I'll gather stars and count your sheep.

Sweetest boy, now hush and rest,

I'll gather fruits from east and west

Darling boy, when you need me,

I'll hold you close and warm your feet.

Dear little boy, one day you'll see,

I'll love you for eternity."

And in the darkness, Damian smiled.
