After the Storm

Your P.O.V (three weeks later)
You stared out at the bright white lights of the camera crews and the yells of the reporters and onlookers.  Your ring shone even brighter against your skin, almost blinding you.  "Ms. Dehai!  Is it true you are engaged?"  "When is the wedding?  Will it be private or a public affair?"  "What do you plan to do about the crime problem after the events three weeks ago?"  Cameras clicked and you watched the swarm for a moment, letting them quiet down on their own once they realized you were ready to begin.  However, there were always a few stragglers.  Clearing your throat, you heard you began your speech.

"People of Gotham..."  You began, the crowd became silent.  " As you know, it was not long ago that the Joker attacked this fair city during the pubic inauguration of Mayor Duxbury."  You turned you head to the new mayor and exchanged a professional but rather cold nod.  you didn't know how long that man was going to be mayor but you knew that either way, it was going to feel like a long time for you.  Turning back the crowd, you went back on task.
"Luckily, because of the unified efforts of the citizens, fire department, and police force, less than 100 lives were lost."  The crowd cheered and you gave a soft smile.  "However..."  You added, voice cutting through the celebration.  "That is not all who we should thank."  You unhooked the microphone and began to walk across the stage.  The crowd looked at you, some in confusion, and some with even blanker stares.

"As a good friend once told me: 'The only way to truly convince people of something is if you believe it yourself.  Another words, you can't convince people unless you on nice yourself first.'"  You shoes clicked on the ground as you make you way to one side of the stage then turned and headed for the other.  "When I was running for mayor, I was set on the idea that heroes were burdens to society and public safety.  However, I soon changed my mind when, after being attacked by the Joker, I came to see the true extent of damage done to the city."

"Feeling that I could no longer run a campaign where my main point was something I was against... I quit.". You make your way back to your podium.  "I changed my mind because Batman saved me.  Now I know most of you will never thank him myself included.  But at this point, Gotham still needs Batman."  You heard the projector turn on behind you and you knew it was time to present your idea.  "That is why, I would like to introduce the newest plan for the safety of Gotham!"  The audience gasped and cameras clicked, the light temporary blinding you as you battled the press with your blinding smile.  "This new force,". You continued.

"The Systematic Association Against Villainous Enemies, or S.A.A.V.E for short will push the current defense system in Gotham to new heights."  With the help of our business partner, Wayne Enterprises, the police for will be better equipped for combat against the common super villains.". The crowd cheered as your programs squad leaders, all dressed up in the new uniforms, waved at the crowd.  They walked up and stood along side you.  "Good speech so far Ms."  One of the men said.  You smiled.  "Thank you."

Turning back to the audience, you began to end your speech.  "While Mr. Wayne could not make it here today, I humbly will express a few words from both him and myself."  You cleared your throat.  "A world without violence is a perfect world.  A world without peace is a realistic world.  With this new program, we will strive to obtain the balance between the two.  So, Mr. Batman, I implore you.  I look forward to a future where crime will be dropped and villains will no longer run rampant as I'm sure you feel the same.  So, I implore you; When all the scum on this fair city is wiped clean, find it in your heart to hang up the cape not out of force but in faith knowing Gotham can keep itself safe.... Thank You."  You finished the speech and stepped back from the microphone, letting your assistant step forth to begin explaining the basic idea of S.A.A.V.E.

Smiling you began to walk off stage when a yell went up in the crowd.  You turned your head in the direction of the people, to the top of a rather tall building where a special dark knight was swinging across.  The crowd erupted into a mix of cheers and the occasional boos.  You clapped your hands loudly in encouragement as Batman swung right up to you and landed at your feet.  You stopped clapping and watched as he straightened up.  Standing up tall, he towered over you and the crowd's cheers shrunk down into whispers.

"Hello Batman."  You said, smiling and looking into the eyes of your fiancée.  Without changing his expression, he bowed to you in thanks.  The crowd once again began to cry out in shock at these events.  Without waiting for an answer from you, he got up and shot his grappling hook towards a new building.  "See you tonight."  He said quietly.  Then he pressed a button on his device and swung away. Watching him leave, you grinned.  "See you tonight."  You repeated.
