Chapter 14: Playdates

3rd Person P.O.V.

1 month after Pink Diamond returned to Earth

Gotham

Fire was set to a building downtown in Gotham. Batman arrived only minutes after it started. Bruce Wayne was near the building when it happened but he strangely disappeared when Batman showed up.

He got most of the people out of the building, but he heard a scream. It's a woman, she's still in there. Batman grappled up into the burning building.

He found her huddled to the ground with a blanket covering her. She's sobbing, looks like she's given up hope.

(Batman) Ma'am, it's okay. I'm going to get you out of here.

She was still crying. He got closer to turn her around. She turns around before he touched her.

(Moonlight) (screaming)

She punched him, knocking him back far. She laughed as she took off the blanket. He should've used Detective Mode.

(Moonlight) You're really predictable, Bat. "Ma'am, it's okay," (giggles) that's so sweet.

She cooed. The place is falling apart.

(Moonlight) Now, save the damsel in distress.

She tried pretending she's in danger. Batman jumps out of the building and it came tumbling down. He lands and heard a laugh.

(Moonlight) That tickled!

She pushed the debris off of her. She's covered in soot. A bit of her hair was on fire, she licked her fingers and pinched the fire out.

(Moonlight) Huh, I feel like a cartoon character. Well, I'm indestructible, so I guess I could become one. Oh, I could be a daredevil or a stuntwoman. Risk free!

She thought but when Batman got a good look at her, she decided to leave.

(Moonlight) Oh, well, guess I have to go now. Ta ta!

She said her farewells and threw a piece of debris at Batman to distract him while she got away.

[Cowl Comms] Sir, are you all right?

(Batman) Yes. But Moonlight got away.

[Cowl Comms] Do you think she was responsible for the fire?

(Batman) Most likely. She was inside the building and pretended to be a victim. I found out the hard way.

[Cowl Comms] What did she do?

(Batman) She punched me. It wasn't a hard one. She's toying with me.

[Cowl Comms] And what of the people in the building?

(Batman) Everyone is safe and accounted for. No causalities.

[Cowl Comms] That is good news. It is unfortunate you were unable to capture Miss Oliver.

(Batman) I don't think I can capture her. She would be too strong to restrain and Blackgate doesn't have the proper cells for the likes of her. The only place that could hold her is Arkham Asylum.

[Cowl Comms] Except it is closed due to the events of Arkham City. Perhaps reopening it is an option?

(Batman) It wouldn't be too wise to reopen a place like that for one patient.

[Cowl Comms] Well there's always--

(Batman) No.

[Cowl Comms] Sir, it might be the only option for her.

(Batman) It might seem that way, but there's many things wrong with it. And there's the matter of getting her there, which will be even harder than locking her up. The Batmobile or Batwing wouldn't hold her.

[Cowl Comms] And any sedative would be futile since her immune system is everlasting. But maybe killing her nerves would be the solution.

(Batman) Her nerves would come back after a short period, but the only way to kill her nerves is...

His voice trailed off.

[Cowl Comms] I know it would be difficult for you to do that because it's against who you are. But doing something like that to her is nothing, she is immortal, afterall.

(Batman) I don't want to get used to it if I have to do it.

[Cowl Comms] If she's secured, you won't have to.

(Batman) Knocking her out is an option, but it would very, very difficult.

[Cowl Comms] The Batmobile's Rioter Suppressor would do the trick for you. But I suggest more than one shot to her head with it would incapacitate her.

(Batman) If I could get a good shot. Keep watch of anything that could be her. She's dangerous.

He went home.

1 month and 2 weeks after Pink Diamond returned to Earth

Bruce quickly got his suit on when the news said cars are being tossed up and down. Batman glides to where the cars are being tosses at and he find the woman responsible for it.

(Moonlight) Hey, Batman, watch this!

She then started juggling three empty cars. Yes, juggling. It was impressive, but dangerous.

She stopped juggling the cars and let them fall. Batman evaded back to avoid the cars crushing him.

(Moonlight) Really cool, huh?

(Batman) You could kill someone.

(Moonlight) Oh, relax. Nobody's around, I made sure of it.

(Batman) You need to stop this before somebody does get hurt.

(Moonlight) Okay, Mr. Fun Police.

She huffed and crossed her arms.

(Moonlight) And this is the part where you're going to try capturing me. Well, I have a rebuttal for that.

She grabbed a car and throw it at him. He ducked, but it left him vulnerable as she was able to kick him across the road. He tried to get up but her foot was on top of him, pinning him down.

She applied pressure to hurt him, but not too bad. She leans forward to speak to him.

(Moonlight) I had fun today. Maybe I'll try this again tomorrow.

He doesn't respond and is actively trying to get her off of him. She stomped on him lightly (by her standards of "light"). He clutched his chest a little as a rib or two cracked.

(Moonlight) Opps! Sorry, I forgot, you're still flesh and bone. Perhaps I'll schedule our next playdate further away, giving you plenty of time to heal.

She gets off of him and walked away. He used his belt to summon the Batmobile for him to climb into. This was extremely agonizing for him, on account of his ribs.

He set the Batmobile on autopilot and it's driving back to the Batcave.

[Cowl Comms] Master Bruce? Sir?

(Batman) Give me a moment, Alfred...

[Cowl Comms] What happened?

(Batman) ...

[Cowl Comms] Sir?

(Batman) I'm almost there...

He got back to the cave. He gets out of the Batmobile.

(Alfred) Master Bruce, are you okay?

(Batman) I'm fine. Just a cracked rib.

(Alfred) Good Lord!

(Batman) It's fine. It'll heal.

(Alfred) Did Miss Oliver say when she would strike again?

(Batman) She said she'll wait longer for me to heal. There's no connection on what she does. She can't find Howard, so she does whatever she wants for fun. She's like a juvenile delinquent.

(Alfred) She's very dangerous, Master Bruce. Sooner or later, you will have to do the things I've mentioned last time in order to prevent further damage to you and Gotham. She could kill some unfortunate bystander if one were to be near her.

(Batman) I know...

(Alfred) Look, I won't force you to do it if you cannot manage it. But if you wish to not receive injuries like this again, you might want to consider it.

Bruce started taking the suit off. It doesn't make sense. Charlotte keeps doing dangerous things due to the fact that she can't die and she knows that.

With burning a building to the ground and juggling cars, it wouldn't surprise him if she started used a ferris wheel like a treadmill. She can't use her idea of infecting Gotham with her blood since Batman had Gordon make every hospital reject the blood that matches hers. Another thing he doesn't understand is where she's hiding. He checked the entire city, including what was left of Arkham City.

He planned on checking Arkham Island tomorrow, but with his injury, he has to postpone it. Hiding on Arkham Island is a good spot, but the only downside is it would take a while to drive from there to Gotham and it's faster to use a boat. Except he's never seen her use a car or boat.

Her getting vengeance on Howard is difficult as well since Dr. Long has moved to a different home, and is contemplating on changing his identity to hide from her. Besides, he isn't her concern anymore, she looks to Batman. She isn't much like the Joker, she hasn't killed anyone but she does things for fun.

She attacks him, but doesn't hurt him too badly, other than earlier. She's very difficult to understand. Tomorrow, he's going to call Lucius to create something that could possibly be a way to fight back against Charlotte-- Sorry, Moonlight.

3 months after Pink Diamond returned to Earth

Bruce had an alert of Moonlight. It's been so long since she last struck, she really did wait until his ribs healed. It's astonishing how patient she is.

Bruce spent most of the time he should've been using to rest to construct a new suit along with Lucius Fox. Tonight, he called Lucius.

(Bruce) Is it ready?

[Phone] It's past the beta testing. It shows promise. It should give Moonlight a run for her money. It's deployed and on it's way to the Batcave.

Bruce and Alfred waited for it to arrive. It shows up and Bruce equiped it.

[Cowl Comms] Flexible plates over an MR-fluid armor layer. You'll move faster, hit harder, and look scarier while doing so. Well, Mister Wayne, let me walk you through it. The outer and inner layers of the bodysuit are made of a titanium dipped tri-weave. It's between those layers where things get interesting. Wayne-Tech MR-fluid hardens in response to impact. With this kind of shock absorption you'll be able to put more force into your counter attacks. The liquid armor's more flexible than the fibers you're accustomed to, as well. You can use that increased maneuverability to take out multiple foes in quick succession. The suit's compatible with the Batmobile's electromagnetic eject mechanism too. You'll fly out of that thing like a bullet from a rail gun. Speaking of which, the new grapnel launcher will pull you skyward just as fast. Don't worry, Mister Wayne, that suit can take the Gs.

Batman went to the Batmobile.

(Alfred) Good luck, Master Bruce.

He drove off. He drives to Central Gotham to see Moonlight standing on top of a building. She beckons Batman to get up there with her.

He grappled up there. He didn't have much time to react when she grabbed him once he reached up there. She wrapped her arms around him, trapping him in a bear hug.

(Moonlight) It's been so long since I last seen you!

She exclaims delightfully.

(Moonlight) You're the first face I've seen after last time. I don't see a lot of people nowadays. And what's this? A new suit? (Gasp) You didn't need to dress special just for me.

She squeezed a littler harder.

(Moonlight) You're making me blush.

She nuzzled her head against the side of his cowl.

(Moonlight) I love those pointy ears on your head. It makes you look less human. Too bad you are human.

He begins to notice she doesn't refer herself as human anymore. Not that anyone would blame her, there's not one thing that isn't human of her, other than her voice. He reached inside his utility belt to grab a Smoke Pellet and shoved it into her mouth.

She involuntarily bites his arm which cracked the gauntlet and the Smoke Pellet exploded into smoke. She lets go and coughs up smoke out of her.

(Moonlight) (coughing) Very clever, Batman...

He then tackled her off the building and he lands on top of her, breaking his fall. She looks up at him and smiled.

(Moonlight) Oh, you like to be on top?

She teased before she pushed him off. They both stand up.

(Moonlight) Show me what you can do.

He kicked her right knee which forced her to be on her left knee, then jabbed her in the face a couple of times before giving her a powerful uppercut which made her stand up.

(Moonlight) Is that the best you can do?

She taunts. He ran up to her but then slide down on the ground to sweep one of her legs to force on one knee again. Then, he gets up and hits the back of her head to distract her momentarily while he uses his feet to jump on her knee up in the air to land on her.

She pushed him off.

(Moonlight) Come on! You can do better.

She tried to punch him but he avoided her fist and grabs her arm to flip her on her back and he stomps on her face to break her nose. She laughs.

(Moonlight) That's what I'm talking about!

She flips back on her feet. Batman is breathing heavily. Her energy is practically endless while his is only half left.

She grabbed a hold of him and held up in the air and slammed him on the ground. She then stomped on his abdomen again, only this time it's even lighter than before. She then got on top of him, sitting on his legs and holding his wrists.

(Moonlight) (chuckles) I win...

She declared victorious.

(Moonlight) Hey, look on the bright side, you did even better than the first time we met.

She then sighed.

(Moonlight) You know what's sad?

She actually waited for a response but she waited long enough and answered it for him.

(Moonlight) This little game of ours isn't permanent. I'm permanent, you're not. Sooner or later, you'll be too old to even chase me anymore. Life is so... sad. You have fun but it's short lived and then you get weak and frail when you're older. I'm glad this happened to me, I can live forever, but not you...

She loosed up on his arms a little. She's talking about herself. She's distracted.

(Moonlight) Y'know... you're the first man I considered to be a friend... Howard was always a bit of a jackass, but I never had a connection with him, or anybody else.

(Batman) Why?

That was the first word he spoke to her tonight.

(Moonlight) Well, you're like me. An outcast. Except, you're more accepted by society than me.

She was silent for a while. She tighten her grip on his wirsts again in case he tried to escape her grasp.

(Moonlight) I don't want to kill anyone, by the way...

She admits out loud, gaining his attention.

(Moonlight) I mean, at first, you and Howard were my targets to kill, but over time, I became grateful for my condition. And I know how much you hate killing.

She looked hesitant to do anything else.

(Moonlight) I... I... I don't want you to leave...

He adjusted himself.

(Moonlight) Sounds weird when I say it out loud, huh? It's what I'm feeling... Oh, what am I doing with my life?

She looks at him in the eyes.

(Moonlight) I would stop my ways if I was to go home with you. And I mean that...

She said seriously. He actually considered it. This is the safest way to stop her from dismantling Gotham, but letting her in the cave where she could destroy it doesn't sound like a good decision.

When it comes what's best for him or Gotham, he chooses Gotham everytime. And she looks genuine about her compromise, she didn't smile or showed sarcasm. It reminded him of what Steven told him a while back.

2 weeks ago:

(Steven) Bruce, what brings you by?

(Bruce) Just thought I could visit. Is that alright?

(Steven) Of course. You're always welcome here.

(Bruce) Where are the others?

(Steven) Mom is on Homeworld and the gems are at Little Homeworld.

(Bruce) You mean the little town next to Beach City?

(Steven) Yeah. It's a place for both gems and humans. You should visit there sometime.

(Bruce) Maybe.

He groaned and held his ribs.

(Steven) What happened there?

(Bruce) I had a run in with Moonlight.

(Steven) You mean the giant white woman?

(Bruce) Yes.

(Steven) What's her story?

(Bruce) She's a science experiment gonr wrong. She was diagnosed with cancer, so she and her lab partner tried to create a cure but it fails when accident happens. The serum made her pale white, muscle and bone deformity, sharp teeth, and endless regeneration. She tried to poison me almost months ago with her blood.

(Steven) Is that why you came for the Diamomd essences?

(Bruce) Yes.

(Steven) I kinda feel bad for her. She probably didn't want to be that way.

(Bruce) At first, it was that. But now she's used to it and she likes it. And she also views me as her plaything.

(Steven) Well, maybe instead of fighting her, why don't you try befriending her?

(Bruce) She's dangerous, and that would be encouraging whatever she thinks in that head of hers.

(Steven) If she's unbeatable by you, then maybe you should try being nice. Ever heard of kill 'em with kindness? It actually works sometimes. It worked for me.

(Bruce) You make it sound easy.

(Steven) It is, sort of. If she is sad or depressed, try reassuring her. Being nice is viewed as a strange gesture to most people. You could maybe talk things out her again. I know she seems big and mean, but under all of that is a heart, metaphorically speaking, in case she doesn't have a beating heart.

Bruce looked unsure.

(Bruce) If I get the opportunity, I will try.

(Steven) Good. You'll be making the right decision.

(Bruce) I hope so.

Present Day:

(Batman) Okay...

(Moonlight) Really...?

(Batman) Yes. After all, it benefits everyone. You and Gotham.

She leta go of his wrists and hugged him. She eventually gets off of him.

(Batman) I'll be taking you to my home, but you have to promise to never tell anybody.

(Moonlight) Sure thing. It's not like I could if I wanted to.

She joyfully clapped her hands together.

(Moonlight) This is so exciting!

Batman called the Batmobile over.

(Batman) You won't be able to fit in the car, but you can ride on top of it. Just promise not to dent or scratch it.

(Moonlight) I'll try.

She patiently waits.

(Batman) Alfred, we have a guest coming, and she's staying.

[Cowl Comms] Oh dear, something tells me I should keep a broom and dustpan nearby.

(Batman) It might take her a while to calm down. We'll discuss about this more when we return.

He got in the Batmobile and drove back to the Batcave.
