Chapter 12:The Interview

He sat at his desk staring at his hands.

Bruce:"Maybe..."

Then he heard a knock.

Bruce:"Come in."

The door slowly open and Lucy poked her head through the small opening. The doors were probably hard for her to open, they were tall and heavy after all. 'Maybe I should start leaving them open for her.' Then the rest of her small body entered. She walked over to his desk and handed him a pile of papers.

Lucy:"I just need you to sign them so I can take them downstairs."

He took out his pen and began to sign the documents. Lucy stood there quietly waiting for him to finish, she couldn't help but notice the view. His office overlooked nearly all of Gotham. Then she whispered to herself.

Lucy:"It's almost like your... a God."

Bruce:"What?"

Lucy:"Oh nothing."

He finished and handed the pile back. She began to flip through them to make sure he hadn't forgotten one. He noticed the bags under her eyes and wanted to ask if she was doing okay but already knew the answer to that. Then he looked at the bandaid still on her cheek, it was clearly the same one he had put there last night. She noticed him staring at it and was too tired to make up a story so she quickly turned around and headed towards the door. But before she could reach for the knob he called her name.

Bruce:"Lucy."

He sounded concerned. She wonder what kind a face a man like him makes when he's concerned. She thought of turning around to look at him, but decided not to. Instead she stayed facing the door.

Lucy:"Yes?"

Bruce:"Take it easy, okay?"

She turned around and gave him a tired smile then quickly left the room.

After taking the papers downstairs she went back to her desk. Not long after she sat down Bruce left his office, neither one of them said anything. Long after he was gone his smell stayed. His smell reminded her of someone but she was to tired to search for the answer. She remembered the first time she ever smelled it.

(Flashback)

...A few months after she graduated from college she was called about an interview. At the time she was working at a small dinner a few blocks away from the Wayne building. Minimum wage wasn't nearly enough for her to live off of or pay off her student loans so she decided it was time to go back to mommy and daddy. She wanted the chance to be independent for once but that was all over now. Later that night as she was packing up her belongings and said goodbye to her dimly lit apartment her phone rang.

Lucy:"Hello?"

Women:"Hello! Is this Lucy Levi?"

Lucy:"Yes, can I help you?"

Women:"I'm from Wayne enterprise and I was calling to see if you'd be interested in an interview."

'An interview? But I didn't even apply.' She thought about it for awhile 'Dad must have had something to do with this.' He always underestimated her, treated her like a child she wanted to show him that she didn't need his money or his help. She would work at that greasy dinner as long as she had to to prove her point.

Lucy:"Um...actually-

Then the woman cut her off before she could say anything more.

Women:"Great! The interviews at 2:00 at the Wayne building, don't be late!"

Then she quickly hung up the phone. Lucy dialed the phone back to tell her she didn't want the interview but it was disconnected. 'How?'
The next morning she went to the Wayne building to decline the interview. At the front desk sat a cheerful burnett with chocolate eyes, she smiled at everyone who walked pass. Lucy wasn't sure where she should go so she headed towards the desk. The lady practically jumped over the desk and ran to her.

Sara:'You must be Lucy! It's nice to meet you, I'm Sara."

She shook her hand then looked at her watch.

Sara:"You're early, that's okay she likes when people are early."

She grabbed her hand and pulled her down a long hallway towards a door just at the end.
'She? Who is she? Was it the women I spoke to before?'

Lucy:"Actually about the interview I-

Sara:"Oh don't worry everyone's nervous at first but she really is a nice lady."

Before Lucy could say anything else Sara knocked on the door, waited five seconds, then opened it. An older women sat behind a desk.

Lady:"How many times do I have to tell you Sara? If you're going to come in without permission don't bother knocking."

Sara:"This is Lucy. Be nice to her."

Then Sara turned around and walked away.

Lady:"You're early. I like that. Please take a seat."

Lady:"You can call me Susan."

They sat there for a moment. Then she spoke.

Susan:"You don't have much experience but-

Lucy:"Um the thing, Ms.Susan is I'm not interested in the job."

Susan:"Oh? Is that right?"

She flipped through a pile of papers, took out one sheet and stared at it.

Susan:"I understand you just graduated college not to long ago."

Lucy:"Yes?"

Susan:"I also understand that those student loans can be quite expensive."

Lucy:"..."

She flipped the paper over and wrote something down. Then handed it to Lucy. She stared at it.

Lucy:"Is this how much you make a year?"

She laughed a little.

Susan:"You make that much in just a few months."

Lucy:"When can I start?"

Susan:"Next week."

The next week Susan took Lucy to where she would be working.

Susan:"This is your desk and through that door is Mr.Wayne's office."

Lucy:"Mr.Wayne?"

Susan:"Yup from here on out you'll be Bruce Wayne's secretary. Well speak of the devil."

Just as Lucy turned her head he quietly walked pass her desk and into his office. The thing she noticed first about his wasn't his appearance or his physique it was his smell and how comforting it was.
