chapter nine

chapter nine || lake house secrets

"Hey," Lydia says poking her head through Ariels door. "I'm going to the lake house, do you want to come?"

Ariel nods her head and gets off her bed. "Yeah, just let my put my boots on."

Lydia nods. "So how are you feeling?"

Ariel sighs standing ip after putting her boots on. "I'm-- I'm okay, I guess."

Lydia bites her bottom lip and nods while they walk to the car. "I'm sorry, Ariel. We should have told you."

Ariel gets in the passengers seat as Lydia starts the ignition. "I'm not mad at you guys," Ariel tells her, shaking her head.

Lydia raises her eyebrow. "You're not?"

Ariel shakes her head no. "I mean, yeah it would have been nice to know so I could be more aware but I know you guys didn't mean for that to happen. Besides, you learned from your mistake. No more secrets, remember?"

Lydia smiles tightly. "Yeah, no more secrets."

"That's your assassin speak?" Stiles asks Chris Argent as they sit by a computer.

"I said he's dead. What more do you want?"

"It was a little dry, don't you think? You could've said something like, "Target has been neutralized. The crow flies at midnight."That's always cool..

"Hmm," Chris says before the computer beeps. "Type this, "Visual confirmation isn't possible." "Police coming to claim body in forty minutes." Tell him number one on the list is dead. I killed him. And if the wire transfer isn't completed in forty minutes..."

"Hey where is everyone?" Ariel asks Lydia cluelessly as they arrive at the lake house.

"Oh um, well, Liam is practicing lacrosse with Mason, Kira and Scott are on a date, Malia is totally MIA, and Stiles is... well, he's doing whatever a stiles does on its freetime."

Ariel frowns. "Oh.

"Yeah."

"Hey, where's Ariel?" Liam asks the two juniors infront of him.

Stiles and Kira share a glance. "She's busy."

"Doing what?"

Stiles sighs. "I don't know, painting her nails?"

"Shouldn't she be here," Liam asks but as soon as he sees the look on their faves he knows. "You guys didn't tell her?" He asks incredously.

"She doesn't need to be apart of this!" Stiles yells defensively.

Kira sighs. "She's been through a lot, Liam."

Liam nods his head. "Yeah, she's been through a lot because you guys never tell her anything. You keep secrets from her and that has almost got her killed. Twice."

"I'm trying to protect her," Stiles tells Liam quietly.

Liam opens his mouth but gets cut off by Kira. "Is that supposed to look like that?"

Stiles quickly looks at the screen. "No, no, it's not."

"Where is that?"

"The roof, someone's gonna have to check it out."

Kira nods. "I'll go," she volunteers.

"Whoa, whoa," Stiles stops her. "This might not just be a malfunction," he says pointing to the screen.

"That's why I'm bringing this," the kitsune says, pulling out her katana.

"I'm coming with you," Liam tells her, not wanting to be in the same room as Stiles right now.

Stiles runs a hand through his hair. "Okay and you're both coming right back, immediately," he says pointing at them before they run off. "Kids," he says sighing.

"Lydia? Do you hear that?" Ariel whispers.

Lydia nods in response and starts walking towards the door.

"Oh, God!" Mrs. Martin yells as the girls scream.

"Mom!" Lydia yells. "What are you doing?"

"What are you two doing?"

"Nothing and how did you know we were here? Did you follow us?

"No," Mrs. Martin denies quickly. "I'm getting ready for the Open House tomorrow."

Lydia gives her mom a flat look. "The Open House is next week."

Ms Martin sighs in defeat. "Okay, I followed you. Honey, you come up here every weekend, sometimes even during the week, and as far as I can tell, there's no boy involved, so I really have no clue what you're up to, both of you."

"I'm trying to figure something out, Mrs. Martin," Ariel speaks up. "Something important."

"And honestly, Mom, you don't need to be involved in every single detail of my life," Lydia tells her.

"No, but I'd like to help if I can."

"Do you know her?" Lydia asks, pulling out a picture.

"Meredith Walker."

"Do you know if grandma had anything to do with her?"

"Yes, but I never asked."

Ariel and Lydia both sigh in defeat.

Mrs. Martin looks at them. "Is that it? Are you looking for stuff on your grandmother?"

Lydia nods.

Mrs. Martin sighs and nods. "I'll be back in a second," she says before leaving the room.

Ariel furrows her eyebrows. "What was that about?"

Lydia shakes her head. "I don't know," she says before her mother returns with an urn in her arms.

"These are your grandmother's ashes," Mrs. Martin says handing the urn to Lydia.

"Grandma died in Eichen House."
"Your father had a difficult relationship with his mother, but after the things she said, and the way she acted..."

"He thought she was crazy," Lydia and Ariel say at the sametime before sharing a look.

Ms Martin looks curiosly between the girls but then brushes it off. "She said she heard things."

"Why did she want her ashes in here?"

"Well, actually, she didn't. She left instructions to have them spread across the lake."

"How come you haven't done it?" Ariel asks.

"Because she wanted Lydia to do it," she says before turning back to Lydia. "When you turned eighteen, don't ask me why but since there's only a few weeks till that, I suppose now is as good a time as any."

Lydia opens the urn. "Mom, these aren't Grandma's ashes."

"What do you mean? Of course they are."

Lydia shakes her head and shows the ashes to Ariel, whos gasps. "No, mom, it's Mountain Ash."

"The whole building," Ariel whispers to her friend. "It must all be made of Mountain Ash."

"Back off!" Christ tells his sister Kate who has recently joined them in the hospital.

"You sure you can pull the trigger fast enough?" She taunts him.

"I don't want to."

"You're not going to kill me."

"I'm not going to let you take his body."

"Uh, okay," Stiles says awkwardly attempting to remind him that he's in the room aswell. "Well, obviously, you guys have a lot to talk about, so, maybe I saw some coffee, a vending machine outside."

"Listen to me," Chris says completely ignoring Stiles. "Kate, we have a plan.

"If killing Scott was part of it, you're worse than me."

"He's telling the truth," Stiles tells her. "We're trying to get to The Benefactor."

"If you didn't notice, you're on that list too and you're worth more than most," Chris says, once again ignoring Stiles.

"That's why I'm here."

"Then back off and let us do what we planned. Take the Berserkers, and go, Kate, please. We have a plan."

"This was the last thing your grandmother wrote down before she died. Don't even know why I kept it because it's basically nonsense," Mrs. Martin says, handing Lydia a piece of paper.

Lydia hands over the urn to Ariel who awkwardly holds the fake ashes of her best friends grandma. Lydia reads the paper and her eyes widen. Mom, are you absolutely sure Grandma's dead?"

Mrs. Martin nods. "Yes, I mean, she has to be."

"This isn't nonsense, Mom. It's code."

Ariel looks over Lydias shoulder and frowns. "But I thought there were only three parts of the deadpool?"
