Summary:

Rintaro Okabe is a self-proclaimed "mad scientist" who believes that an international scientific organization named SERN is conspiring to reshape the world according to its own interests. He and his friend Itaru Hashida inadvertently create a gadget able to send messages to the past. The discovery and experimentation of this instrument become the catalyst of fundamental alterations to the present. Okabe is the only one aware of these changes because he possesses a Reading Steiner, the ability to retain the memories from previous experienced timelines. Oblivious of the consequences of their actions, Rintaro and his friends end up creating modifications of grievous proportions. He must then try to find a way to return as close as possible to the original timeline in order to save his precious lab partners.

"El Psy Congroo!"

"I am mad scientist! It's so cool! Sonuvabitch!"

"Screw you, future me!"

"What kind of mad scientist worries about not getting enough vegetables?"

The protagonist. First year student attending Tokyo Denki University. Calls himself a Crazy Mad Scientist, he acts like a villain, but is rather immature as he frequently shows traits of Chunibyou  syndrome despite being a grown-up man. After enrolling in university, he went to Akihabara to open up a laboratory called the "Future Gadget Research Establishment", where he invents gadgets that are rather useless. He also talks to himself on a cellphone, his words not making much sense. Supposedly, he has very few friends that can understand what he's talking about.
Often calls himself "Hououin Kyouma".
Mayuri and Daru just call him "Okarin", abbreviated after his name.
The phrase he uses to end conversations, particularly with himself, is "El Psy Congroo."

I started watching this while Funimation was in the middle of dubbing the series. I watched the first four dubbed and the rest dubbed. I would highly suggest watching it subbed because some parts just don't translate well in the English version. (It's not as funny)

Steins;Gate brought me to a level of geekdom I thought I would never reach. This show kinda mindf*cks you.

There are elements to this anime that are somewhat based  in reality.

Like the organization named SERN, which in real life is called CERN. The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN or Cern is an international organization whose purpose is to operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory.

The character John Titor.

"Posted by John Titor on 01-27-2001 12:45 PM. Greetings. I am a time traveler from the year 2036. I am on my way home after getting an IBM 5100 computer system from the year 1975. My "time" machine is a stationary mass, temporal displacement unit manufactured by General Electric. The unit is powered by two, top-spin, dual-positive singularities that produce a standard, off-set Tipler sinusoid. I will be happy to post pictures of the unit."

In reality the original John Titor from the years 2000/01 claimed to be a soldier from a different time line in the year 2036, sent to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100. This computer, developed by IBM could use an IBM proprietary language, that he needed to prevent the 2k38 Bug and debug some legacy computer programs. Titor claimed to be in the year 2000 for "personal reasons", as visiting his family and recovering photos lost during the civil war. He also claimed to be selected for this mission because his grandfather was directly involved in the creation of the time machine.

The person claiming to be John Titor came to messages boards telling his story.  John Titor is clearly a hoax, but the story behind him is really interesting and the person who wrote the posts is amazingly creative. There is a movie out about John Titor and a book with all his posting and pictures/drawings.

The story of Steins;Gate is very intertwined with John Titor's postings. How the time machine works, the different time lines based on the changes, the progression, and ending of the show.

As a time machine based show it gives you everything thing you could want. Its smart and its funny with Okarin being the crazy main character.

This video is why I decided to watch this anime.

I highly suggest watching this anime.

I give Steins;Gate a 4.5 out of 5
