"Nurarihyon-san?"

"Hm?"

"Are you alright?"

"... why do you ask?"

"I... you don't seem like yourself tonight..."

"And how would you know what I'm really like?" he snarled.

He and you were sitting by a riverbank as you gazed up at the starry night sky.

Usually, he would speak a few words and ask a few philosophical questions before returning to a comfortable silence. For the past few days, he hasn't said a word to you. He didn't even make any eye contact whatsoever. The comfortable silence then became an uncomfortable silence. And tonight, you finally decided to question him.

"... you're right... I see that you need some time alone... I'll take my leave now. I'm sorry for disturbing you. Get well soon."

That was it. You left him alone by the riverbank. You weren't mad or anything. You understood that sometimes, people just needed to be left alone to cool off.

~Time Skip~

It's been at least two weeks since you've last ventured out at night to see Nurarihyon. You planned on visiting him after a few days, but days turned into weeks and you've lost the will to see him. He appeared as if he was upset with you and because of that, you were worried that if you visited him, you would anger him further.

It was now sunset. You looked towards the ribbon of the horizon. You sighed heavily as you tried to stop worrying about the man.

When the sky grew dark, you began your journey home.

Suddenly, you were grabbed from behind and your mouth was clamped shut.

You tried wriggling your way out of your attacker's grasp only to hear an all too familiar voice.

"Why have you been avoiding me?" growled Nurarihyon.

"Nu-Nurarihyon-san!" you gasped as the hold on your mouth was removed. "I wasn't trying to avoid you..."

"I've... I've been so... so empty and lonely without you..." he murmured as he pulled you into a warm embrace.

"You seemed like you needed some time alone... I thought I... I thought I would annoy you if I showed up again..."

"You annoyed me by not showing up," he growled lowly as he spun you around.

"I-I'm sorry..."

"No... I'm sorry... I shouldn't have said that..."

It took you a moment to realize what he was referring to.

"And how would you know what I'm really like?"

"Eh? You don't need to apologize. I was stupid for thinking that I knew you enough to-"

"No. Let me finish. I haven't been completely honest with you..."

Now you were confused.

"I'm a yokai..."
